Lake Tahoe recreational areas and forest roads begin their seasonal closures

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will soon begin closing recreational facilities and forest roads around the Lake Tahoe Basin for the winter season. Seasonal closures apply to many Forest Service recreation sites including beaches, campgrounds, picnic areas and forest roads. Keep in mind that Tahoe Valley and Zephyr Cove Resort campgrounds remain open year-round along with Camp Richardson and Zephyr Cove resorts and beaches.

The kickoff events are now in the record books, and racers are now preparing for the rest of Lake Tahoe Marathon week to get started. Please note, State Route 89 will be closed to vehicle traffic in each direction around Emerald Bay from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 15 during the Lake Tahoe Marathon. Hundreds of cities across the country have banned the use of polystyrene (better known as Styrofoam) in their communities. The SLT City Council will be taking a look into banning the substance in the City Limits at their October 17, 2017 meeting.
In 2013, South Lake Tahoe added a ban of single-use plastic bags in grocery stores to the City Code.
Suspects sought for attempted robberies in El Dorado County

Two suspects are being sought by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) for three attempted robberies in Cameron Park and Placerville October 9-10.
The first attempt occurred on October 9 at the CVS store on Palmer Drive in Cameron Park. At about 7:00 p.m., two male suspects entered the store and attempted to rob the pharmacy. They jumped the pharmacy counter and demanded narcotics. When they were not given the medication, the two suspects fled the store.
Estimated 3,500 homes and businesses destroyed in NorCal fires; Red Flag Warning in place

Overnight fire conditions were very active on several fronts forcing additional
evacuations across Northern California. Firefighters are battling 22 large
wildfires that have burned nearly 170,000 acres. Firefighters are bracing for
the winds to shift this evening and increase in speed. 17 people are confirmed
to have died in the wildfires this week. 11 people alone died in the Tubbs Fire,
making it the 6th deadliest fire in our state’s history.

SPECIAL EVENT
U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from 5 Mile Road to Carson Road in Camino: Eastbound motorists can expect the left turn lanes to be closed at 5 Mile Road, lower Carson Road and upper Carson Road from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, October 8 and Saturday October 14 for Apple Hill Season. Motorists will be directed to Exit 54/Cedar Grove to access Carson Road.

USFS prescribed burn in Lake Tahoe resumes Monday

California State Parks will kick off the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) fall prescribed fire program next week, beginning October 10, 2017. If conditions are favorable, prescribed fire operations will take place in D.L. Bliss State Park on the southwest end of Lake Tahoe. Smoke may be visible and is expected to last through the week. $85M in sales at Tahoe Beach Club during first phase

During their first summer of sales, 39 of the 46 available contracts to buy a luxury condominium home at the Tahoe Beach Club sold for a total of $85 million.
This development at the end of Kahle Drive in Stateline, Nevada is the first full ownership lakefront in 30 years at Lake Tahoe. They are being built on land that was once a trailer park.
Homebuyers have been mostly from the Bay Area, Southern California, Texas and New York areas.

Group asks City Council to consider allowing food trucks in South Lake Tahoe

A planned food truck event in South Lake Tahoe had to be cancelled this summer due to the prohibitive costs and processes involved in putting on such an event.
"We are so hungry to get a food truck culture going in Lake Tahoe,” said Rob Giustina of On Course Events, the company who had planned the "Tahoe Truck Stop" food truck weekend event.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you waited to the last minute to purchase tickets for the 8th annual Sample the Sierra you were out of luck on Saturday at Bijou Community Park. The popular festival of food, wine and beer sold out all pre-sale tickets prior to the event, and sold out of tickets at the gate just after opening, much to the disappointment of many.
1,500 full tasting tickets and 50 children tickets were sold. Those lucky enough to get in moved from booth to booth, each with either a wine, beer or alcohol paired with food, or a local artisan and their wares.

Vail Resorts to add workforce housing in Colorado

A subsidiary of Vail Resorts announced Wednesday that it has received approvaly to convert a portion of a commercial property they own in Silverthorne, Colorado to workforce housing.
Colorado Mountain Express got a conditional use permit for their $440,000 project is the latest in Vail Resorts’ $30 million commitment to creating workforce housing opportunities in the communities in which the Company operates, including the Wintergreen development in Keystone and the recently announced plans to rezone a parcel of land in East Vail for workforce housing and open space, pending approvals.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Someone broke into the storage trailer at Bijou Bike Park and stole the generator used to run the gates and audio for kids races at the park.
Between 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5 and 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, September 6, the lock on the trailer was cut and the equipment stolen. Bijou park manager Chris McDade saw the open door today and called police.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are two topics that fills the City Council chambers: Marijuana and Vacation Home Rentals (VHR). Interested residents and other stakeholders in the City's proposed changes to the VHR ordinance not only filled chambers, but filled seats surrounding televisions in the lobby where the proceedings were aired.
After almost six hours of presentation and conversation, the City Council voted to bring back the new ordinance in one month on October 5.
"Our job is to make a decision, not continuing to kick the can down the road," said SLT Mayor Austin Sass.

Construction on new trail near Incline Village suspended for holiday

Due to anticipated heavy holiday traffic near Incline Village this Labor Day weekend, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has put work on hold at the State Route 28 shared-used path Saturday, Sept. 2 through Monday, Sept. 4.
NDOT and Granite Construction officials timed current work to be at a point where State Route 28 could be accessible in both directions for the weekend. Work will remain in progress through Friday, Sept. 1 and will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 a.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Turtle Park, a musical group featuring Al Nichol, one of the original Turtles, will play at a benefit for the South Tahoe Cancer League Saturday, August 26 at the American Legion Hall.
The Turtles had several Top 40 hits from 1065 to 1970 including "Happy Together," "It Ain't Me Babe," and "Let Me Be."
Two of the members of Turtle Park, Park Kinnear and Nichol, are cancer survivors and are holding this show to raise funds and get volunteers for the South Tahoe Cancer League.

Achievements in preserving Lake Tahoe were celebrated August 22 during the 21st Lake Tahoe Summit at Tallac Historic Site, but it was clear there is a lot more to do and the job will never be over.
Started by former President Bill Clinton in 1996, this annual gathering of government, public agencies and private partners highlights what has been done, what is being done, what what still needs to be done in keeping Lake Tahoe clean and clear.

California Senator Diane Feinstein is hosting the 21st annual Lake Tahoe Summit on Tuesday, August 22 at Vahalla in the Tallac Historic Site from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The theme for the day is "2017- A Pivotal Point for the Future of Lake Tahoe.”
The event will examine successful restoration projects and ways to address new challenges facing the lake. A key focus will be combating the effects of climate change in the Lake Tahoe basin.
Opinion: Dogs at Parks and Live at Lakeview Events

Many South Lake Tahoe residents love their dogs. Most Police Officers love dogs too. I’ve heard it said by someone not so long ago…. “The more people I meet, the more I love dogs!” We at the police department understand and share in this fondness; however, we receive weekly complaints from community members regarding dogs in public parks, and most frequently dogs at the Live-at-Lakeview events. Buffalo Bill's Wild West at Dangberg Historic Park

August 26, 2017 - 10:00am Buffalo Bill’s Wild West returns to Dangberg Historic Park on Saturday, August 26 at 11:00 am as the park’s final major event of the 2017 Dangberg Summer Festival.
The show features Buffalo Bill Cody, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Annie Oakley, the Pony Express, The Mayfield Gang and the 1st Nevada Cavalry. The Douglas High School Marching Band and western singer-songwriter Krista Jenkins return for a second year to draw the audience back in time to the frontier of the American West.

City working with promoter to keep SnowGlobe in South Lake Tahoe

Is SnowGlobe an event that should stay in South Lake Tahoe?
The answer is "yes" according to the City Council, but exactly how the future working and financial relationships between the City and SnowGlobe will look still needs to be worked out.
Chad Donnelly, founder of SnowGlobe, made a presentation at the SLT City Council meeting Tuesday, outlining a plan to keep the annual December 29-31 music festival in the community.
Laine and Novasel appointed to the California Tahoe Conservancy Board

Now that elected officials are allowed back on the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC), the South Lake Tahoe City Council and El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS) both appointed their representatives today.
Governor Brown signed AB1191 on July 24, 2017, defining who could serve on the CTC after the use of elected officials was questioned earlier this year.
16 mile memorial trail to re-create wagon route at Donner

After an agreement today, a 16-mile trail to commemorate the original wagon route west over Donner Summit will be created from Kingvale through the Donner State Memorial Park in Truckee. Users will follow the original Overland Emigrant Trail but stay away from its remnants to protect the historical artifacts.
Fire at south end of Yosemite now at 900 acres

8/14/17 update noon: The South Fork Fire at the southern end of Yosemite has now burned 900 acres. The wildfire, which was spotted at 2:00 a.m. Sunday is burning in steep terrain and air resources are being used on the fire. No evacuations are in place at this time.

The "South Fork Fire" which started early Sunday morning has now burned 400 acres. It is burning in the South Fork of the Merced River, one mile upstream from Swinging Bridge.
