New Year, New Set of Laws in California and Nevada

With hundreds of new laws every year for the past 45 years, one might wonder if anyone knows them all or can keep track of the changes. There are new laws on the books for both California (800 new laws) and Nevada (45 new laws) that Lake Tahoe residents might want to brush up on.

Live Violence Free Holiday Givings

However, many local families with few resources are struggling to rebuild their lives after experiencing violence. They are solely focused on how they will pay rent and provide food and warm clothing for their families. For the thirteenth year in a row, Live Violence Free is organizing an opportunity for community members and businesses to come together to provide happier holidays for local survivors of violence.

South Lake Tahoe Successes Highlighted in Today's State of the City Address

Mayor Tom Davis touched on more than a couple of dozen points during his State of the City Address which was presented to an overflowing full house at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

Among the Davis's highlighted city successes for the year:

Linear Park - Over $600,000 was spent on a paved bike path, landscaping and an additional 22 lights on a stretch from Wildwood Avenue to just before Pioneer Trail.

Granlibakken to Host the Annual Lake Tahoe Women's Wellness Conference

Friends of the Library Looking for Book Donations For November 16 Sale

The South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library are currently accepting donations of books and audio/visual materials for their upcoming book sale. They would greatly appreciate materials only in good condition and with a copyright date no earlier than 2000. Especially needed are recent children’s books and children’s DVDs, as well as recent materials in Spanish. The group would also like to limit audio/visual donations to DVDs & books on Tape/CD.

Sangiovese Tasting 101

Dog Agility Park Opening Celebrated by Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The City of South Lake Tahoe and the South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association (SLTPCA) worked in partnership to install several pieces of custom dog agility equipment at Bijou Park. A Ribbon Cutting ceremony was held on Sunday, September 22nd to celebrate the opening of the Bijou Dog Agility Park.

I have been working for the last year on The Children’s Memorial Tree and I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You to the community of South Lake Tahoe for their support in rebuilding the memorial. I wanted to keep the Skibum as well as my alter ego out of the publicity due to the fact that there would be resistance to the idea from those that do not always agree with my views and I wanted no distractions. We had to play good cop / bad cop with the city in order to push the memorial through and guess which role I played.

Every Dog Has It's Day and in Tahoe it's Sunday!

The South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association (SLTPCA) has worked for over a year to move this course from a dream into a reality.

Placerville couple indicted, face federal charges of filing false tax return and liens

A Placerville couple was arrested Tuesday and face criminal charges after federal investigators said they defrauded the government by filing false tax returns and false liens against IRS employees.

Charles and Victoria Tingler face conspiracy and other charges. According to an indictment, the Tinglers and Teresa Marie Marty, are charged with filing liens against the property of three IRS employees and filing liens of at least $84 million against the property of two U.S. Justice Department attorneys, according to a news release.

Lake Tahoe agents say Californians fleeing to Nevada to escape taxes

Real estate agents on Lake Tahoe's Nevada side say they're making sales to Californians trying to escape to Nevada after recent tax hikes in California.

In November, Californians approved Proposition 30, which raises taxes on earnings over $250,000 for seven years. Nevada has no state income tax.

South Lake Tahoe and canine association team up to install agility equipment at Bijou Dog Park

The City of South Lake Tahoe and the South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association are working in partnership to prepare and install the agility equipment at the Bijou Park.

After careful consideration and discussions with all of the City Departments involved in this project it has been decided that the dog agility park will be located across from the dog park instead of inside the current dog park. We believe this is a better option and will be easier to maintain.

El Dorado County women indicted in nationwide $60 million tax fraud refund scheme

In an indictment unsealed Tuesday, three El Dorado County women — Teresa Marie Marty, of Pollock Pines, Rebecca Bandera-Marty of Shingle Springs, and Pamela Harris of Placerville — were charged with conspiring to defraud the United States, the U.S. Department of Justice and the Internal Revenue Service announced.

In addition to the conspiracy count, Marty is charged with 33 counts of false claims against the United States, and Bandera-Marty is also charged in 16 of these counts.

A new marketing campaign “Improve the State of Your Business,” developed by the Northern Nevada Development Authority has received national media attention for its recent launch of marketing materials and a website targeting the relocation of business to Douglas County. The campaign includes material specific to Douglas County and has been successful in bringing new jobs to the local area.

In a 5-2 decision the Reno City Council on Wednesday approved restructuring the financial agreements amounting to about $30 million related to the Reno Aces baseball stadium project. Council Members Jenny Brekhus and Hillary Schieve opposed the plan.

Nevada Rural Housing Authority names Nevada State Bank as “Most Valuable Partner”

The Nevada Rural Housing Authority (NRHA) has named Nevada State Bank, “Most Valuable Partner, ” one of the NRHA’s highest awards to a bank or lending institution.

“Nevada State Bank has been instrumental in providing WISH program funding for the NRHA,” said Gary Longaker, NRHA Executive Director. “The money comes from an award by the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco and Nevada State Bank has been an important player in bringing these dollars into our region to help young rural families go from renters to first time home buyers,” he said.

Tahoe Prosperity Center welcomes two new team members

Christina Proctor, public relations professional, and Bev Ducey, a resource development expert with an extensive history in grant procurement, will be advancing the mission of the Tahoe Prosperity Center (TPC) in 2013. The TPC Executive Committee contracted with Proctor and Ducey after Mone´ Haen, former chief executive officer, announced her resignation in December. Proctor will be developing TPC materials, presentations and handling the daily administrative tasks of the organization. Ducey will focus on strengthening the TPC’s financial resources through grant development.

Eric Nageotte-Lowe Memorial fundraiser to benefit Heavenly Foundation teams

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the Eric Nageotte-Lowe Memorial Fundraiser to celebrate the life of former South Lake Tahoe resident and Heavenly Freestyle Team member, Eric Nageotte-Lowe this Saturday, Jan. 26, from 5pm to 8pm at the Himmel Haus, 2819 Saddle Rd. across from Heavenly Mountain’s California base area.

California GOP lawmakers call for college tuition freeze

Success for Calif. Tax Measures May Not Be New Trend

California voters had rejected every statewide tax measure since 2004 until they approved two of them last week. They also said yes to 70 percent of the local tax and bond measures on last week’s ballot. But this may not be the start of a new trend.
The passage of Propositions 30 and 39 snapped a seven-measure winning streak for the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. But President Jon Coupal says that doesn't mean the attitudes of California voters are changing when it comes to taxes.
