On June 10 the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center released findings from its annual Lake Tahoe Clarity Report, which showed average Lake clarity for 2019 was 62.7 feet, the second-smallest annual average depth recorded since systematic annual measurements began in 1968.

Jeff Marsolais leaves LTBMU and becomes new supervisor for Eldorado Forest

PLACERVILLE, Calif. - The former Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) forest supervisor has moved over to the same position with the Eldorado National Forest, replacing the retired Laurence Crabtree.

Jeff Marsolais came to Lake Tahoe in 2010, working several positions and for the past five years, had filled the top spot.

The Eldorado National Forest is welcoming back Jeff Marsolais, who will begin serving as the Eldorado’s new forest supervisor on June 22. Jeff worked on the Eldorado National Forest early in his career and is excited to return.

20th anniversary of Snapshot Day at Lake Tahoe

Friday evening brought thunderclaps and patchy showers to Lake Tahoe, adding to the flow of streams and rivers the following day as 40 participants collected water quality samples across Tahoe’s South Shore as part of Snapshot Day. This citizen science water quality monitoring event takes place every May and provides a moment-in-time look at the water quality and environmental health of the Tahoe-Truckee watershed.

Lake Valley Fire selects Brad Zlendick as its new fire chief

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Valley Fire Protection District didn't have to search far for its new chief to replace the retiring Tim Alameda. Brad Zlendick, who has been in the interim chief role since March 18, is now officially the LVFPD fire chief.

Lauri Kemper selected to fill vacant seat on Lake Tahoe Unified School Board of Trustees

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In a 3-1 vote the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Trustees voted to bring retired engineer Lauri Kemper on board to fill Barbara Bannar's term.

Bannar resigned in March and her term ends December 2022.

Originally there were three candidates but one dropped out of the running, Chris Proctor, leaving Kemper and David Wise. Interviews took place during the Tuesday LTUSD Board meeting on ZOOM, each candidate having two minutes to answer each of the board's ten questions.

Tahoe Homeless Coalition adjusts to COVID-19: Operations now 24 hours/day

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to the rapidly changing health crisis brought by coronavirus and COVID-10, the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) has a new
coordinated COVID-19 response and will be open 24-hours-a-day through April.

In preparation for increased utilization and operational capacity surging expected for the next several months, TCH has made the changes to their sheltering and support service programs. They have seen a 30 percent increase in nightly shelter requests and anticipate that number will increase significantly over the coming weeks.

New interim fire chief for Lake Valley Fire Protection District

MEYERS, Calif. - Starting Wednesday, March 18, Lake Valley Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Brad Zlendick will be moving into the role of Interim Fire Chief. The current chief, Tim Alameda, will be retiring starting May 9, but he will be using accrued vacation and sick time until then.

Soroptimist Club of Tahoe Sierra celebrates women in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just as they have for the past 43 years, the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra Club is honoring women and youth in the South Lake Tahoe community. They recently held their annual awards celebration and honored four young women from South Tahoe Middle School and South Tahoe High School as well as four women from the community.

For the GIVE Award, honored were Alexi Haven, Tovah Jordan, Esty Zanetti, and Maiella Riva. The Ruby Award was given to Suzanne Boyer and the Live Your Dream Award was given to Heather Wilson, Olga Zepeda and Kelly Meyer.

For over 30 years, Bread & Broth has been providing meals at St. Theresa Church’s Grace Hall to all who come to our door. As an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, B&B relies on the generosity of time and monetary support from our local community to provide the wonderful and nutritious meals that are enjoyed by our dinner guests.

Vail awards $2.8 million in grant support to 76 Lake Tahoe area nonprofits

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Vail Resorts EpicPromise has selected 76 local nonprofits in the Lake Tahoe area to receive one of their 2019-20 community grants, totaling $2.8 million in grant support.

Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood recently held a breakfast to honor the recipients. The followed with a similar celebration at Northstar, the third area Vail resort.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A benefit performance of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues will be held February 21-22 in the MontBleu Convention Center. Known as "V-Day South Lake Tahoe," the 18th annual event will raise funds for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in the community.

The goal is to raise $15,000 for Live Violence Free, the locally-based nonprofit that provides the tools and resources necessary for these survivors to rebuild, gain independence and thrive.

Positive results for Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe during their first two months

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. – Providing a much-needed service in the community, the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has been filling a void with special pet therapy training, wellness clinics, spay and neuter programs.

Since opening in December 2019, HSTT has provided over 100 spay and neuters to the community for free or at a reduced rate. They have also trained 60 new volunteers.

Become a UC Master Gardener of Lake Tahoe

The University of California invites Tahoe-based adults interested in teaching others sustainable gardening to become a Master Gardener volunteer. You will learn University-based scientific information and then share that knowledge with others. UC Master Gardener volunteers are people of all ages and from all walks of life with a common desire to help others learn about gardening.

South Tahoe High's Melissa Berry wins Outstanding Teacher of America award

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Melissa Berry, AP Psychology and US History teacher at South Lake Tahoe High School was selected to receive one of the five 2019 Carlston Family Foundation Outstanding Teachers of America Awards.

In November, Ms. Berry received a $15,000 cash award at the Carlston Family Foundation’s 17th Annual Awards Ceremony in Mill Valley, Calif. During Tuesday's Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) board meeting, she received an additional $5,000 grant for South Lake Tahoe High School.

Letter: 2020 goal to provide a safe place for South Lake Tahoe youth, teens and families

2018 – 2019 was a year of endings and new beginnings. Tahoe Youth & Family Services faced a lot of change. As we all know, change is hard but change can also be exciting. Both our staff and board are embracing the New Year with excitement and renewed energy.

The following are new programs that will be happening:
o Homeless program for youth 18 – 24 years in South Lake Tahoe, SLT
o Expanded SLT Host home program for youth under 18 including those youth who are involved with child welfare services, juvenile probation, and the McKinney Vento program.

Arrests and medical issues down during second day of SnowGlobe in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. The second night of the 9th annual SnowGlobe Music Festival in South Lake Tahoe is in the books.

From a law enforcement side, things have been fairly quiet when compared to past years. On Monday night there were 35 citations issued by the Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC), all related to minors in possession or adults furnishing alcohol to minors.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department arrested two people for public intoxication at the event.

Go Fund Me fundraiser set up for daughter of Mark “Coach Hammer” Brown

A Go Fund Me fundraising page has been set up by a friend of Mark “Coach Hammer” Brown who passed away at the age of 55 in South Lake Tahoe on December 18.

"He was a fabulous guy with a rock-star charisma," says the description on the page. "Mark was A dedicated father to his daughter Taylor and an active volunteer in the South Tahoe community. His sudden passing on December 18 has left his family and friends in shock."

TRPA honors 29th annual Best in the Basin award winners

STATELINE, Nev. - Six projects were given Best in the Basin awards Wednesday by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). The presentation of the 29th annual winners was made before their board meeting at Stateline.

The TRPA Best in Basin awards program showcases projects around the lake that demonstrate exceptional planning, implementation, and compatibility with Tahoe’s natural environment and communities.

All of these Vail Heavenly Mountain Resort team members have volunteered frequently over the past years with the exception of Dana Paugh.

Training to be held for South Lake Tahoe Warm Room volunteers

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless will host training sessions for members of the community who would like to become new Warm Room volunteers this season. The Warm Room in South Lake Tahoe is an overnight emergency shelter that operates three-four months during the winter.

A Thanksgiving gratitude message

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Gratitude: grat·i·tude /ˈɡradəˌt(y)o͞od/ - noun - The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.

Just in the definition, there is so much meaning for not only this day but for every day. As the Thanksgiving turkey, potatoes and stuffing are heaped onto dinner plates, thank yous are given for the ability to have the meal with family and friends. Thanksgiving reminds us to give thanks and to count our blessings. We are blessed and lucky to enjoy life, and we must remember that every day of our life.

IVGID trustee moving from area, resigns from his Incline Village post

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The Incline Village General Improvement District (IVGID) has announced that Trustee Phil Horan will be leaving his seat on December 16, 2019. His resignation is contingent on the closing of escrow on his home.

Horan and his wife Jan are moving out of the area and recently sold their home. He made the announcement at the IVGID board meeting on November 13.

New Vail Resorts report highlights community and sustainability achievements

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Vail Resorts’ second annual EpicPromise Progress Report was released this week, showing they gave away $14.5 in community and employee grants in the areas their resorts are located. In the Lake Tahoe area, $1.9 million in grants was given to 93 local organizations.

Roberta recently celebrated her 90th birthday and the party continues. She has been a vital part of the local community for over 60 years and was instrumental in bringing Lake Tahoe Community College into existence. She was a member of their Board of Trustees for 40 years.

Volunteer mapping of invasive plants along Upper Truckee River completed

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A three-year effort to survey the Upper Truckee River for aquatic invasive plants has wrapped up. Community members, supported by staff from the League to Save Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Resource Conservation District, and California State Parks joined together to map the plants in order to prevent their spread during major upcoming restoration projects along the river, Lake Tahoe’s largest tributary.

$100K from 30th annual American Century Championship awarded to local nonprofits

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Thursday was money giveaway day at the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) meeting at Stateline. Thirty-eight local nonprofits were given checks totaling $100,000, a result of funds raised during the 30th annual American Century Championship at Edgewood.

Tax-aide volunteers needed in South Lake Tahoe

Looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity? If you’re good with numbers and people, you’re the kind of volunteer needed by the South Lake Tahoe branch of the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide Program.

They are seeking individuals interested in working in the volunteer-run tax preparation center. These volunteer tax preparers, called counselors, work directly with the taxpayer to fill out tax returns and electronically file the quality-reviewed returns.
