Two public hearings on the Meyers Area Plan in October

The El Dorado County Planning Commission will be holding a public hearing and workshop on the Meyers Area Plan at the South Lake Tahoe City Council Chambers on October 16 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The public has a chance to give input and share ideas on the plan which will be an update of the existing 1993 Meyers Community Plan.

The plan's goal is to:
1) Be a comprehensive land use plan for Meyers;
2) Realize Meyers’ Community Vision;
3) Provide consistent and simplified rules;
4) Assist in achieving Tahoe
Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Thresholds;

Both Chambers to host Measure F forums at LTCC

The South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce hosts another informational forum on Measure F Wed. Sept. 24, also at 5:30 p.m. in the Aspen/Board room at LTCC.

September is Membership Month, and the Tahoe Regional Young Professionals (TRYP) has a busy month ahead with lots of great events, mixers, and ways to get involved in the community.

Bike Way Finding Signs Being Tested in South Lake Tahoe

Have you noticed the new, blue signs placed along some of the South Lake Tahoe bike trails? They are part of a pilot way finding sign project to help cyclists between Kingsbury Grade and Meyers.

There are currently eight signs up in four locations, so people using the trails can see the directions from opposing views.

According to Steve Noll, community planning consultant with Design Workshop, “the international best practices for way finding signs consist of four elements known as 'The Four D’s: distance, direction, destination and distinction'."

Locals complete surveys about what they'd like to see at Regan Beach

On August 12, the City of South Lake Tahoe held a community tour and discuss about the future of Regan Beach. The City wanted input from the public on what they wanted to see done with the beach, playground, parking lot, concessions and whatever else they wanted to see completed.

91 surveys were completed and handed into the City and are now available on line. The survey was also available on line.

Ground breaks on final Harrison Avenue phase and Champions Plaza

If you haven't been by Harrison Avenue lately you'll find some big changes. Landscaping has gone in, one way streets are in place, there are more walking and biking areas and stores are being updated to reflect the new look.

The final phase of this year's project is the parking lot at the north end across from Lakeview Commons. And after the City Council's unanimous vote at Tuesday's meeting, the corner will also be Champion's Plaza.

As a permanent landmark to honor Lake Tahoe's past, current and future National and Olympic champions.

How it will look is what isn't known.

Water issue expert to speak in Lake Tahoe

The Sierra Business Council is hosting Peak Innovation, a conference for Lake Tahoe locals, small business owners, communities and local governments. During the conference, Dr. Peter Gleick, an expert in water issues especially in the context of economic and environmental justice, will be at the conference which takes place October 8-10 in Tahoe City. In a National Geographic science blog, Gleick recently repeated the common question, “Why, if the California drought is so bad, has the response been so tepid?”

City and Chamber bring back popular business coaching program

Tahoe Tactical Team, the popular business coaching program, is returning due to a federal grant received by the City of South Lake Tahoe. They have joined a partnership with the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce to bring back the program which helps new business owners start up an enterprise or existing business owners take their businesses to the next level.

Green Gardening Workshops Continue in Lake Tahoe

Make a statement this July Fourth Holiday. Get down and dirty and join other Lake Tahoe gardeners in creating a stunning, long-lasting color bowl for your home this year. Bring a 14-16 inch color bowl with fresh soil (the secret to healthy containers is good dirt) and the Lake Tahoe Master Gardners will supply the plants. There will be ornamentals as well as edibles all with a Red-White-and-Blue theme!

It will be held at the U.C. Davis Tahoe City Field Station which is located at 2400 Lake Forest Rd in Tahoe City.

Refreshments will be provided as they are at each workshop.

Car Free Day Held at Kingsbury Businesses

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency closed it's parking lot to motorized staff vehicles on Friday for what has become a hallmark event for the agency.

Over 60 staff members of both TRPA and adjoining offices at their lower Kingsbury building biked, walked, used transit or a combination of these to get to work.

The 4th annual event started started as a way to get more staff members of TRPA to participate in the Tahoe Bike Challenge.

Revised Meyers Area Plan Revealed; Community Workshop on June 26th

The Meyers Area Plan is a long term land use and zoning plan for the Meyers Community that will realize the Meyers Community Vision, assist in achieving and maintaining TRPA’s Environmental Threshold Carrying Capacities, implement the Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Sustainable Communities Strategy, and implement the policy direction of both the Regional Plan and General Plan.

El Dorado County Fair Opens in Placerville

It's that time of year again. The county fair, full of funnel cakes, carnival rides, animals, music, exhibits, wheelbarrow races, wine and beer competition and good old fashioned fun.

The El Dorado County Fair opened on Thursday and runs through Sunday, Father's Day at the fairgrounds in Placerville. The theme this year is "Photos, Fathers and Fairs."

The County Sheriff's Office invites community members to stop by their booth and see the brand new state of art patrol vehicles. They'll have a new SUV and sedan on display so people can see inside and check out their new features.

On Friday, May 30th Live Violence Free in collaboration with South Tahoe Middle School and Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra held the annual Girls Empowerment Retreat for 33 middle school girls, grades 6-8.

Draft Tahoe Valley Area Plan Ready for Public Review

The Draft Tahoe Valley Area Plan and accompanying documents were released Wednesday, paving the way for finalization after agency and public review and upcoming comment periods. After community meetings and months of review and planning, the "Town Center" concept has been adopted along with "Greenbelt" portions.

The plan reflects the City of South Lake Tahoe's effort to rekindle the economic vitality and spirit of the Tahoe Valley Community. The plan outlines the community's strategy for resurrection.

Community Workshop on Meyers Area Plan to be Held Wednesday

Residents of Meyers and the surrounding South Lake Tahoe community have been actively participating in what is called the "Meyers Area Plan." During the last community meeting on February 26 several concerned citizens spoke about what they wanted, and didn't want, to see their in their town.

El Dorado County officials took the numerous public comments made both at the meeting and on-line and have created potential revisions to the Draft Meyers Area Plan.

Wayfinding Workshop to focus on signage for Nevada side of the South Shore

This workshop will focus on potentially missing or duplicative highway signs between Cave Rock and Stateline and up Kingsbury. The primary purpose of NDOT’s highway signs is to safely guide drivers to the next city or town. The chamber is interested in discussing additional destinations such recreation in light of the large number of visitors, including those who are from out of the area with many of those not speaking or reading English.

The City of South Lake Tahoe Asks: What Do You Want to See at the Y?

Several South Lake Tahoe residents showed up at the presentation of the Tahoe Area Plan at the airport on Thursday. Most agreed that the area known as the "Y" needs to be changed with an area plan, but which direction to a take to a final plan is where people differ.

The evening consisted of a presentation by John Hitchcock, who is on loan to the city from the TRPA for this project as Planning Project Manager. After he spoke the group broke out into three breakout sessions, each focuses on one of three choices presented as the future concept for "Y" area.

Meyers Residents Turn Out to Fight For their Community

Information was circulating that Meyers was going to be taken over by large parking garages and other unwanted development including a Athlete's Village or Basecamp type feature, much of what was created by a now buried Catalyst Plan. "The Catalyst Project is dead," El Dorado County Supervisor Norma Santiago told the packed house at the California Conservation Corp (CCC) building in Meyers on Wednesday night.

City Seeks Community Input on Tahoe Valley Area Plan

South Lake Tahoe Residents Have Many Upcoming Opportunities to be Involved in the Future of the City

The City of South Lake Tahoe is encouraging residents to be informed and engaged in the community and is offering several opportunities in the coming weeks to do just that.

"In an engaged community, every person has the information, the opportunities and the support needed to take action and lead change throughout their lives," according to the Knight Foundation. "When people become involved, and exercise their full democratic rights, they make their lives and those of others better."

Parking a Hot Topic at South Lake Tahoe City Council Meeting

Paid parking remains a hot topic in the city which was proven by the packed house at Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting. On the agenda was discussion and possible action on an initiative to prohibit paid parking on city streets.

Tahoe 4 Tahoe (T4T), a local group organized to fight paid parking, gathered more than the required signatures to get the initiative put on the ballot, but legal precedence and unforeseen consequences of the proposed initiative led the city council to vote unanimously to have a Fiscal Impact Report completed in the next 30 days.

Teamwork Between the City of South Lake Tahoe, City Employees and Community Applauded

"Its not often you can come to City Council and look back to see how we got where we are today with such incredibly great news in such a short time," said South Lake Tahoe City Manager Nancy Kerry during Tuesday's City Council meeting.

Heavenly's Proposal for Year Round, Non-Skiing Activities Under Review by Forest Service

Heavenly Mountain Resort's proposal to expand to year round, non-skiing activities is now under review by the U.S. Forest Service, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board. Heavenly's plan is to create a summer experience for guests with the addition of zipline and skycycle canopy tours, a mountain bike park, a ropes course, water activities, hiking trails,mountain excursion tours and nature interpretation.

Teen Writers Can Learn How to Write a Novel in November
