Eldorado National Forest begins Roadside Hazard Tree Mitigation Project on 2400 miles of roads

This project is designed to reduce safety hazards along the 2,461 miles of National Forest System (NFS) roads, including 116 miles of state, local, and private roads in Alpine, Amador, El Dorado, and Placer counties. The project aims to ensure the integrity of the NFS roads and improve safety for the public, Forest Service staff, firefighters, emergency response personnel, law enforcement, private landowners, contractors, special use permit holders, and others.
American Century Championship extends contract for celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe

It has been a popular celebrity tournament at Edgewood Tahoe since 1990, first with Isuzu as a sponsor, then for the last 25 years, American Century Investments.
What’s emerged over the past 34 years is a magical blend of sports and entertainment celebrities golfing, competing, and celebrating along spectacular Lake Tahoe.
NBC, which owns the tournament, will be televising it this year July 14-16.
South Shore casinos report $16.78M in gaming win, down 34% from one year ago
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/25/2023 - 11:33pmNevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,312,090,406 for the month of March 2023, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's monthly report released Tuesday. This amounts to a 3.8 percent decrease compared to the same month a year ago when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,355,201,041. For the fiscal year to date (July 1, 2022 through January 31, 2022), the gaming win has increased by 4.46 percent.
The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

UNR test project of recycled-plastic pavement withstood heavy trucks and extreme weather this winter

“It’s a testament to the new technology,” Elie Hajj, professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno and associate director of their Superpave Center, said. “We are conducting extensive performance and environmental testing to get to this asphalt mixture.”
Billy Strings first performer announced for new Tahoe Event Center

Grammy award-winning singer, songwriter, and musician Billy Strings is coming to the new center at Stateline on October 8 during his fall tour. The new center will be opening this summer and includes a 5,500-seat arena with an additional 10,000 square feet of meeting room space and is located along US50 at Bally's Lake Tahoe.

On May 4 at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, David Groth will show people how to spot a scam, and teach participants the most common scams happening

Man wanted in connection with a Bay Area homicide arrested at Lake Tahoe

On Sunday, April 23 at approximately 9:22 p.m., a license plate detector near Kingsbury Grade in Stateline, Nevada alerted law enforcement of a vehicle whose driver had a felony warrant out for his arrest as a person of interest in connection with a Bay Area homicide. The warrant had been issued by the Pleasant Hill Police Department.

The snow will melt quickly this week as a robust ridge of high pressure builds over the west. This pushes high temperatures into the 80s for lower valleys and mid-60s to around 70 for mountain valleys from Thursday through the end of April, if not the first day or two of May.
This will be a significant test of the snowpack and associated snowmelt.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 04/22/2023 - 6:11pmWith a break in the action on the courts, the Sacramento Kings' mascot "Slamson" hit the slopes at Sugar Bowl Resort on Saturday. He got in some spring skiing as the resort hosted its annual season-ending party.
There was the Sugar Bowl Tiki Pond Skim which included costumed skiers and riders attempting to cross the pond between the Disney and Nob Hill chairlifts near the Village Lodge base area, with live music, a pop-up tiki bar, and a snow beach viewing area to watch the action.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's the day that many locals wait for - $5 Dump Day on June 10! An annual tradition in South Lake Tahoe, Community Cleanup Day allows residents to get rid of unwanted items for just $5 a carload, along with free dumping of mattresses, refrigerators, computers, and televisions. The cost is $10 for a truckload or for Nevada residents. No construction materials are allowed.
From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., vehicles can go through the line at South Tahoe Refuse, located at 2140 Ruth Avenue, South Lake Tahoe (yes, you could go through more than once).
Mural wall comes down as Tahoe Wellness Center expands into new space

People loved the art, disliked it, or ignored it, but it is now gone as TWC owner Cody Bass prepares to unveil the business expansion.
While the mural on the outside is gone, the same artist, MEAR ONE, is painting another on one full wall inside the cannabis dispensary.

Laine said the meeting was to "start the conversation" as the county reviews the current ordinance and looks for possible updates.
Originally scheduled for a March Board of Supervisors' meeting but postponed due to heavy snow, Ferry gave attendees the same presentation he'll give to the board on May 2.

Forest officials stress that it is extremely important for firewood cutters to pay special attention to the terms and conditions of their permits.
Firewood permits cost $10 per cord with a two-cord minimum and a 10-cord maximum for the year. A cord is the amount of wood in a stack four feet wide by four feet high by eight feet in length. Permits are valid through Dec. 31, 2023.
Roof collapse not enough to sideline Sidestreet Boutique for long

"The chandelier was swaying and there were cracking noises coming from the roof," said Barbara, the owner of South Lake Tahoe's Sidestreet Boutique. She knew it was more than nearby avalanche control cannons but was not exactly sure what was happening. She got the customers out and closed up.
At 10:58 p.m. that evening, the cameras showed her what was happening - the roof above Sidestreet Boutique collapsed and the sprinkler system cracked, sending massive amounts of water into the store.

Snow could delay opening of grading season at Lake Tahoe for some projects

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) said property owners and project managers should plan ahead for delays to the start of grading activity and pre-grade inspections.

chances for rain and snow showers (sorry about the "s" word).
There is another Lake Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe from 1 p.m. Monday to 8 a.m. Tuesday. The National Weather Service (NWS) said winds from the southwest are expected during this time - 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected. Waves on the lake will be 2 to 4 feet.

House fire in South Lake Tahoe displaces family

At 11:23 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to the single-story home to find a fully developed fire. It was knocked down quickly but the damage had already been extensive.
Motorists will see single-lane closures on Kingsbury Grade as NDOT begins road work

Beginning Thursday, April 13 through April 28, one lane will be closed on Kingsbury Grade five miles up from Foothill Road weekdays between 7 a.m.-5 p.m. While the majority of delays will be brief, motorists should anticipate up to 30-minute travel delays as traffic flaggers alternate directions of traffic through the work zone.

Lake Tahoe’s clarity the best since 1980s, but is more needed to keep Tahoe blue?

Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC).
TERC and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency released the annual report on lake clarity Monday, a report showing praise for the tiny zooplankton for providing a natural clean-up crew to help restore the lake’s famous blue waters.

Raley's will not reopen its Stateline location in South Lake Tahoe due to damaged roof

The store had announced previously their lease would expire on June 30 as management was unable to "come to an agreement with the landlord to extend after offering several collaborative solutions."
NDOT prepares for roadwork on US50, and State Routes 28 and 431 this summer

Two-vehicle collision near Bridal Veil Falls injures 12
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/10/2023 - 11:54amEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A head-on collision near Bridal Veil Falls west of Lake Tahoe injured 12 people Sunday afternoon.
At approximately 12:15 p.m., first responders were called to a two-vehicle collision just west of the falls on US50. Four people were transported by ambulance to Marshall Medical Center and UC Davis Medical Centers, one person was transported by REACH Air Medical Services Calstar 3 to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, and seven were treated and released on scene.

An upper-level trough currently situated over the Gulf of Alaska will shift, with another ridge developing behind the trough on Friday, which will favor a gradual warming trend into the weekend. Right now the early models are showing signals of another round of cooler and unsettled weather early next week.
But in the meantime, enjoy pleasant temperatures around Lake Tahoe in the coming week, though it will get windy at times.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, South Tahoe Refuse, Clean Tahoe, and Supervisor Brooke Laine have joined together with the help of Leona Allen to disseminate information about coexisting with local wildlife.
The search for food and get wildlife into trouble unless humans learn how to behave, said Leona.
A locally sourced way to address single-use plastic litter in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/09/2023 - 8:48amEarlier this week, the South Lake Tahoe City Council received a report from the League to Save Lake Tahoe about a collaborative, grassroots program to tackle local litter through outreach to local businesses. To Keep Tahoe Blue, the volunteer-fueled education effort targeted litter items that are far too common: bags, straws, utensils, containers, and other single-use, plastic trash from to-go food.

Snow slide closes SR89 around Emerald Bay

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has closed SR89 at Emerald Bay after a snow slide across the roadway Saturday afternoon.
At 1:06 p.m., emergency calls were received of multiple cars trying to get around the popular spot at Lake Tahoe when snow slid across both lanes. CHP is on the scene and has closed SR89 from Eagle Point Campground to Bliss Memorial State Park.
Caltrans is on the way to clear the snow.
