Trustee Jon Hetherton commended the District for moving in the right direction and gave accolades for the sense of community that was present during the Welcome Back Staff meeting and the New Staff Orientation event. Bernadette Santana, Classified School Employee Association (CSEA) President, also noted the excitement about the start of the new school year and the spirit of collaboration.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Chamber is hosting a “State of Education” Town Hall on Wednesday, September 6 at the Tahoe Beach Retreat Conference Center in South Lake Tahoe, starting at 6:30 p.m.
Dr. Todd Cutler, superintendent of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District will present the “State of the District” covering the District’s vision, mission and goals, educational programs, community and educational partnerships, facilities and transportation services, and the District’s budgetary challenges.
South Lake Tahoe students head back to the classroom on Monday

To start the year, so far, there are 3,651 students, almost equal to last fall when there were 3.649 students when the October figures were calculated. There are now 40 students who live in Nevada attending California schools, up from 31 last school year and 33 from the 21/22 school year.

The schoolwide event involved students from kindergarten to fifth grade teaming up with buddy classes to construct a safe critter crossing for the protection of local wildlife.

All K-2nd graders of South Lake Tahoe and Zephyr Cove elementary schools enjoyed the yearly field trip, ‘Woods, Water, Wildlife.’ This event is organized and run by the South Tahoe Environmental Education Coalition (STEEC), a collaborative network of over 25 local agencies.
Ten retire from Lake Tahoe Unified School District with total of 256 years of service

"LTUSD wishes to express its sincere gratitude for this year's retirees and their many years of service to the children and families of our community," the District said.
The ten retirees have a total of 256 years of collective service in education:

Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/22/2023 - 9:21pmWestern Nevada College’s (WNC) return to a traditional commencement ceremony on Monday in Marv Teixeira Pavilion brought back familiar and wonderful traditions, providing graduates with the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments with family and friends. The soothing sounds from the Sierra Highlanders’ bagpipes filled the arena. Speakers provided motivational messages from and their hearts and personal experiences. Performing arts students gracefully danced across the stage to the music of “Seize the Day” from the musical “Newsies.” The atmosphere was electric.

This work continues as part of our districtwide systems for serving multilingual learners and in response to input from students, staff, families, and our community.
Accomplishments this year include:
Protected time at every districtwide for students to receive targeted instruction developing their academic English; a secondary focus on removing barriers to enrollment in honors and advanced placement work.

Giulia Lancellotti, Evelyn Bennett, Lyla Landy, Chloe Waskiewicz, Noosa Higgins, Emily Banks, Arya Saini, Leslie Pulido, Rose Friedrich, Kalea Paine, Eva Moyer-Pirie, Brody Defranco, Evan Habaradas, Ian Lomeli, Levi Hernandez, Ayden Keck, Minh Nguyen, and Tommy Morton will be making the trip. Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School team attends state conference

The conference was focused on promoting positive relationships, school climate and culture, and safety for all students.
The LTESMS team was comprised of teachers from various grade levels, elementary site counselors, and the school's principal.
They used the unique opportunity at the conference to expand their knowledge and come back to share their insights with colleagues, students, and the community.

During their joint board meetings this past week, the trustees heard from leadership the changes they have been implementing to meet their goal of having all local students graduate high school with college credits, and creating a college-going community.
South Tahoe High students compete in statewide National History Day

Under the direction of history teacher Daniel Tirre, the students prepared for the National History Day competition held at Sacramento State University last weekend.
"These projects were very high quality and gave our students a chance to show off their academic abilities," said Tirre.

On Monday, April 17, the meeting is a closed session with one agenda item, public employee performance evaluation for the superintendent. The meeting starts at 3 p.m. but is not open to the public and not available on Zoom.

South Tahoe High's sports medicine students place high in national competition
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/24/2023 - 4:30pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe High School's (STHS) Sports Medicine students attended the National High School Sports Medicine Competition in Los Angeles last weekend and came home with several trophies.
As a team, STHS placed third out of over 40 schools and Rossi Bonev’s individual score placed her fifth out of over 600 students. The Tahoe students also participated in a Sports Med Jeopardy contest, placing third overall!
South Tahoe High seniors commit to LTCC and Simpson College for sports at next level

During a traditional high school signing ceremony with family and friends watching on Thursday, Itzel Diaz, Jenni Arias, Salvador Arias, and Aiden Morales all committed to LTCC Soccer Coach Jeremy Evans to play for him in the Fall. Aiden was a 1st Team All-League striker, Jenni a 1st Team All-State, and Itzel was Honorable Mention All-State.

World Down Syndrome Day to be celebrated at Sierra House Elementary

Tuesday, March 21 is National Down Syndrome Day, and Sierra House Elementary is celebrating its three students with Down Syndrome, David Munguia Reyes, who is in the third grade, and fourth graders Micah Cooley and Dylan Polan.

Attendance was more than double expectations and attendees heard a presentation from LTUSD leadership, participated in interactive tabletop conversations and heard from local leaders.

During his report, LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Todd Cutler encouraged community members to attend the upcoming State of the District Community Conversation that will be held on March 15, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. in the South Tahoe High School (STHS) Student Union. Refreshments and snacks will be provided as well as childcare for elementary-age children.
Snow Day for LTUSD and TTUSD students Monday
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/05/2023 - 6:49pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have a snow day again on Monday, March 6. This is due to the heavy snow in South Lake Tahoe over the weekend, and more forecasted Sunday night.
The excessive snow is requiring additional time to make sure school sites are safe for students and staff. City and County snow crews will continue working on clearing roads in the community.
All schools in Tahoe Truckee Unified School District are also closed.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/01/2023 - 5:46pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As many residents are starting to dig out from the past week's snowstorm, some roads are still not cleared. The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has said school buses cannot safely maneuver the streets.
In conversations with both city and county representatives, it is clear that roads will not be widened by tomorrow morning, according to LTUSD. As a result, school will be canceled Thursday, March 2, 2023.

Please don’t travel to campus so snow removal operations can continue unimpeded.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/26/2023 - 8:18pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District has announced there will be no school on Monday, February 27. Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe will also be closed.
With heavy snow and forecasted blizzard conditions, the District wanted students and staff to remain safe and not on the roads of South Lake Tahoe.
They will continue monitoring the forecast and will provide an update Monday evening about school on Tuesday. The blizzard forecast is expected to end early Wednesday morning.
LTCC launches cross country and long distance track programs with hiring of new coach

Matthew Airola, a two-time California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) individual cross country and track & field champion with extensive coaching experience, will start at LTCC in February, with the program’s first competitive season beginning in August 2023.
2023 State of Nevada Mathematics Championship for grades 1-12

This contest is being hosted by the College of Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno’s campus, and is sponsored by Microsoft. There is an online option for eligible students who are sick or more than a 2-hour drive away.
Trophies and medals are awarded to top performers at NNVMath's Annual End of Year Awards Dinner on May 20. Awards will be mailed to those unable to attend the awards dinner.

South Tahoe High School Dance Team takes 1st place at Northern Nevada Cheer and Dance Invitational
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/29/2023 - 2:54pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High (STHS) Dance Team took top honors on Saturday at the Northern Nevada Cheer and Dance Invitational held at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno.
The team won first place in the Jazz Dance Category.
Leading the STHS team are coaches Kylee Finnegan, Ashley Smith, Izzy Preston, Bri Alamilla, and choreographer Ashley Smith.
It was a lot of hard work to take the top spot including weeks of 7 a.m. practices, said Coach Kylee.

Radical Innovative Scholars Advancing STEM (RISAS) is the newest program on the LTCC campus after they received a five-year $5 million federal grant to help Latino/a/x/e and low-income students pursuing various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) degrees. They join other Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) receiving funds to help Latino/a/x/e and low-income students who are interested in pursuing education and careers in STEM.
Two-hour delay start to Lake Tahoe Unified Schools on Tuesday, 90-minute delay for Douglas
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/12/2022 - 6:02pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will be on a two-hour delayed start to school on Tuesday, December 13. Many families and staff have been without power for an extended period of time, and many are still shoveling snow to get out of their homes.
As a result of this storm, many are still dealing with the impacts of the snow, including downed trees and damage. LTUSD schools are experiencing similar impacts and could use the additional time to prepare for students.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe High School is hosting the next "Visit with the Superintendent" on Tuesday, December 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the school's library.
The communitywide meeting with Dr. Todd Cutler is an opportunity for people in the community to connect with the superintendent about current topics, as well as the future of Lake Tahoe Unified School District. Light snacks will be provided.
South Tahoe High is located at 1735 Lake Tahoe Blvd, South Lake Tahoe.
UNR receives grant to train aspiring special education leaders

This month we’d like to highlight Elevated Digital Learning Academy!
Elevated is LTUSD’s online school. The school was born in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic but wow, has online education changed since then!
Volunteers clear space at South Tahoe High for new quad with donated benches and tables
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/30/2022 - 8:00pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Seventy volunteers were at South Tahoe High on Sunday, working hard to clear up the quad area in the center of campus for the upcoming table and bench project.
The South Tahoe Vikings Booster Club is spearheading the project and has been finding sponsors for the benches and tables, and coordinating donations.
Ed Cook's Tree Service donated the cut logs that now rim the quad area and brought along a Bobcat to move the logs, dirt, and boulder donated by Goodrich Construction.
South Lake Tahoe 6th graders spend day planting trees, learning about watershed and fire
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/28/2022 - 5:34pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – South Tahoe Middle School 6th grade students spent the day with environmental educators and learned about watershed health as they helped to replant in Caldor Fire burn scar.
Members from the South Tahoe Environmental Education Coalition (STEEC) put on their “most popular” field trip for the students at Echo Lakes Sno-Park on October 21.
STEEC is a collaborative network of over 25 local agencies and non-profits that work together to bring environmental programs to the South Lake Tahoe schools. They run at least one field trip per grade per year.
