Space still available for STHS Volleyball two-day clinic

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is still space available for the two-day Super Spikers Volleyball Skills Clinic August 10-11.

Instructed by South Tahoe High School Varsity coaches and players, the clinic is a fundraiser for the team. The cost for the two days is $100.

It is open to boys and girls, ages 8-13 with all skill levels. The clinic will be held in the Blue and Gold Gym at South Tahoe High from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. each day, plus the Vikings scrimmage between the varsity team and coaches from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Saint Mary's Head Coach Theresa Romagnolo brings the Gaels Women's soccer team to Lake Tahoe for a pre-season team game and retreat.

Coach Romagnolo is the wife of Alex Romagnolo who grew up in South Lake Tahoe before graduating from South Tahoe High and playing soccer at the University of San Diego.

Tahoe Grizzlies holding signups and Evaluation Day for the 2023/2024 Hockey Season

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Grizzlies, a member of the South Tahoe Amateur Hockey Association (STAHA), is offering club hockey to youth players across the region. All players are invited to try out and become a Tahoe Grizzly.

Join them on August 6 from 9:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. for evaluations and registration. Players are invited to skate with their age division. Coaches and board members will be available for questions. There is a $20 registration fee for the evaluation skate.

Thursday pairings for American Century Championship

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The 34th celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe doesn't get underway until Friday, but before that, a Celebrity Pro-Am will be held on Thursday with two shotgun start tee times.

The American Century Championship offers a purse of $600,000 and network television exposure on NBC and is the most prestigious celebrity tournament in golf. The 54-hole competition is for current and former professional athletes, entertainers, and media commentators. The tournament is contested among 90 competitors under a modified Stableford form.

Closures in place for annual Death Ride, cycling the California Alps

The premier cycling event in California, the Death Ride, will be held this Saturday, July 15. Since 1978 cyclists have been challenged to ride a route with over 14,000 feet of climbing, over 103 miles in distance, six categorized climbs, and over three mountain passes.

There are some road closures those not participating in the race need to be aware of. The event runs from 5 a.m. - 6 p.m. SR89 and SR4 will close at 5 a.m. The Monitor Pass section of SR89 re-opens to vehicles at noon. The Ebbetts Pass section on SR4 re-opens at 4 p.m.

Lake Tahoe to be home to a professional hockey team co-owned by Tim Tebow

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow was at the Tahoe Blue Events Center Monday to announce that he and partner David Hodges are bringing professional hockey to Lake Tahoe.

The new center will be home to the first professional sports team to call the Lake Tahoe area home. The team will launch in October 2024.

Hockey players from Tahoe Hockey Academy, Tahoe Prep Hockey Academy, and the Lake Tahoe Lakers were on hand for the announcement on the steps of the new center which should be open by the beginning of September.

Fundraiser underway for South Lake Tahoe Babe Ruth as they head to regionals

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Babe Ruth of South Lake Tahoe, Inc., is raising funds to support the team as they travel to upcoming regional tournaments in Tulare and Taft, California. The all-volunteer baseball organization said funds raised will help cover expenses associated with transportation, lodging, meals, and other incidentals for coaches the players and coaches.

The 2023 Pacific Southwest Babe Ruth 14u Regional All-Stars Tournament will be held July 16-22, followed by the 13u Regional All-Stars Tournament in Taft on July 23.

Three South Tahoe Futbol Club teams win at the Come Up for Air tournament in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - The U-12 South Tahoe Futbol Club (STFC) Coyotes took first place at Come Up For Air (CUFA) by defeating Sporting Santa Clara 2-1 in Sunday’s championship game at South Tahoe High School. The Coyotes defeated Sporting earlier in the tournament, 4-2, and also defeated Battle Born FC (3-0) and the Orchard Valley Toros (2-1).

Coached by head coach Jose Del Rio and assistants Jose Diaz and Juan Castaneda, the Coyotes are made up of sixth and seventh-graders and have amassed an 18-4-1 record this season.

Yankees come out on top at South Lake Tahoe Babe Ruth Championship

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a big weekend of baseball in South Lake Tahoe with the Babe Ruth league championship games. In a thrilling final matchup on Sunday, the Yankees beat the Cubs, 10-7. The Cubs couldn't overcome an early deficit, secured by the Yankees taking the lead with a well-executed double by Ryland Wright in the second inning.

Although the Cubs fell short in the end, they put up a valiant effort, collecting four hits in a game dominated by offense. The Yankees managed to rack up an impressive total of 11 hits on their way to triumph.

South Lake Tahoe Shootout brings teams from California, Utah, and Nevada

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Action gets started on the basketball courts at South Tahoe High School (STHS) on Thursday, with ten teams from three states meeting for the four-day South Lake Tahoe Shootout.

On Thursday, in the school's Blue Gym, Highland 1 and 2, Woodcreek, Stagg, and Skyline 1 and 2 are meeting up starting at 4 p.m.

Friday's action is in both the Blue Gym and Gold Gym from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The South Lake Tahoe teams start action Friday with the first shootout.

South Tahoe High Volleyball Team to hold 2-day Super Spikers skills clinic

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A two-day Super Spikers Volleyball Skills Clinic will be held August 10-11, 2023. Instruction will be given by South Tahoe High School (STHS) players and coaches and the clinic is open to all levels, both boys and girls, ages 8-13.

The clinic is being held as a fundraiser for the STHS team. The cost for both days is $100 per player.

Countdown to American Century: John Elway returns to the celebrity golf tournament

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. - Former Denver Broncos Super Bowl MVP and Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway has not played in the annual American Century Championship for six years, but he will be returning to the popular celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe July 12-16.

The two-time Super Bowl champion signal-caller played in the first 27 tournaments until post-football career injuries sidelined him in 2017.

59th annual Lake Tahoe Relay on Saturday starts and ends in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be runners racing around Lake Tahoe on Saturday, all of who are taking part in the 59th Lake Tahoe Relay, the longest-running relay in the country. It starts at 5 a.m. at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe. This serves as the finish line as well.

The Lake Tahoe Relay teams consist of seven people, each running approximately 8 to 12 miles. All runners will have the same team number pinned on the front of their shirts.

There is also a two-person relay team with two members, each running 36 miles on alternating legs.

Tahoe Swim Team has strong showing in Truckee

The Tahoe Swim Team traveled to Truckee this past weekend for the "Beat the Heat" meet hosted by Tahoe Truckee Swim Team. Swimmers from South Lake Tahoe participated in events new to them and personal records were broken. The Tahoe Swim Team coaches said they are extremely proud of how dedicated swimmers are to improving their skills and times.

Meet participants were Madden Casto, Maia Edmonds, Mia Vasquez Valdez, Izzy Boles, Julia Buntin, and Rowan Edmonds.

Zephyr Cove men's tennis team qualifies for USTA National Championships

For the first time, a Men’s 4.5 team from Zephyr Cove Tennis Club has qualified for the United States Tennis Association’s National Championships, to be held October 14-16, 2023 in Tucson, Arizona.

The men's 4.5 over 40 team qualified by capturing the highly competitive Northern California Sectional Championship held May 19-21 at Gold River Racquet Club in Sacramento.

Local team members include Ryan Johnston, Chris Kiser, Ross Rittiman, and Bob Beutenmiller.

Youth soccer camp at Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe this summer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) is hosting a soccer camp this summer for children, both Club members and nonmembers, from July 10 to July 13. The coaching staff is composed of professional coaches who have played professional soccer.

Whittell High girls win NIAA 1a Track and Field Championship, Robertson wins 3 trophies for boys' team

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - The Whittell High School girls' track and field team has brought back the State Champion trophy from the NIAA 1a State Track Championship in Henderson, Nev. Through 18 events, the young women collected 91 points with first-place finishes in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays and long jump.

Logan Robertson from the boys' team was a one-man show at state, coming home with three first-place finishes in the 800-, 1600-, and 3200-meter runs.

South Tahoe High Baseball team ends 2023 season with 2nd place in state, 1st as academic champion

UPDATE 4:30 PM: It wasn't the finish they were hoping for, but the South Tahoe High Vikings ended their 2023 season with an impressive second place in the NIAA 3a State Tournament.

The Vikings ended up playing 11 games in the last nine days between the northern regionals and the state tournament. Their opponent in the final game was Pahrump Valley, the number one seed from the south. South Tahoe fell 0-3.

Even though Pahrump Valley won the final, South Tahoe outscored them in two games 8-5. Temperatures have been in the 90s in Henderson, the site of the tournament.

Tahoe Bike Month gets underway June 1, lots of activities for all ages

The rest of the county is currently celebrating National Bike Month, but with the epic winter and snow still remaining on many trails, Tahoe Bike Month will start June 1.

The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition is planning a full calendar of events and is going for a record number of registrations for Tahoe Bike Month.

Whittell High School Warriors have high hopes at NIAA 1a State Championships

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After their biggest camp in 2022, the 12th annual Game Time Summer Basketball Camp returns to South Lake Tahoe July 17-20, 2023. Last year, over 60 boys and girls from ages 6-17 attended.

The camp is held at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation and Swim Complex, 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd.

This year's basketball camp is open to ages 7-18, both boys and girls from beginners to advanced.

South Tahoe Vikings JV squads shine In 3A Northern Nevada Track & Field Regional Championships

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High Junior Varsity Vikings, led by Coach Rod Canny III, recently competed in the 3A Northern Nevada Track & Field Regional Championships. Both the Viking boys’ and girls’ squads placed in the competition.

The boys’ squad finished strong, earning 1st place with 109.5 points. The girls’ squad accumulated an admirable 95 points to claim the 3rd spot. The event was held Monday, April 24, 2023, at North Valleys High School in Nevada.

Special Olympics Nevada athlete named to Special Olympics USA team

Special Olympics USA has announced it will send a 201-member delegation to represent the United States at the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023, being held June 17-25, 2023. 10-year anniversary celebration for Lake Tahoe Epic Curling Club

STATELINE, Nev. - Lake Tahoe Epic Curling celebrates 10 years with special public events throughout the month of January.

Lake Tahoe Epic Curling (LTEC) was founded in January 2013. The roots of the club started with occasional curling sessions at the South Tahoe Ice Arena.

This quickly grew into a passionate group of curlers.

In 2019, the club built a year-round, dedicated curling facility in the basement of the TRPA building in Stateline.

The first session on the 10th is "FREE" and all other sessions are $10 and pay-as-you-go. The sessions will focus on balance, learning how to fall, getting back up, strides, and fun, fun, fun. All sessions are for children only.

South Tahoe High grad McCallan Castles heading to play football for Tennessee

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since graduating from South Tahoe High School in 2018, McCallan Castles has been showing the rest of the football world what South Lake Tahoe already knew the athlete could do.

Castles, who has been playing for U.C. Davis Aggies for the past three years, announced Wednesday that he will be playing for the Tennessee Volunteers next fall. He started his collegiate career with the Cal Bears, playing three games for them in 2018. He transferred to UC Davis early in 2019. The psychology major has one year of eligibility to use at Tennessee.

LTCC Girls' Soccer heads to Sierra College for 3rd round playoff game

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Women's Soccer team has dominated the standings all season long, with several weeks sitting at the top of the CCCAA standings in the Golden Valley Conference (California Community College Athletic Association).

With their 10-0 league and 15-5-2 overall records, the LTCC Coyotes were able to sit out the first round of playoffs and were scheduled to host the 11th-seed Canada College (15-4) of Redwood City this past Saturday in South Lake Tahoe.

South Tahoe High Boys Soccer team and coaches honored for 2022 season

South Tahoe High's 2022 boys' soccer program had an outstanding season. They had the best record since the team won the State title in 2010. This team had one of the league's best defenses which only allowed seven goals overall, eight goals counting conference games. Their offense scored 54 overall goals. In league play, they had five clean sheets, nine clean sheets counting conference games.

2022-23 winter season gets started at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe this Friday

With snow still falling at Lake Tahoe, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe has announced they are opening this Friday, November 11. The resort will be closed mid-week, Nov. 14-18 to finish work on the new Lakeview Express chairlift, and reopen for daily operations for the 2022-23 winter season on Saturday, Nov. 19.

South Tahoe High Boys Tennis Team does well at state tournament

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High boy's tennis team sent several players to the 2022 NIAA 3A State Championship this past weekend in Reno. The team clinched the Class 3A Northern League Boys Tennis championship earlier in the month, giving them two doubles teams, one singles, and a team entry in the state tournament.

The South Tahoe Futbol Club U12 boys team came home from Elk Grove, Calif. this weekend where they played in the 2022 Ghost Games Tournament. Youth soccer teas played in costumes, and the South Tahoe Coyotes were dressed as minions as they dominated play and brought home the trophy in their division.

South Tahoe High JV football team persists to upset rival truckee

South Tahoe High School (STHS) Junior Varsity (JV) team wins 35-34 against longtime rival Truckee High School! At the conclusion of a challenging season for the hardworking team, STHS JV staged a major upset on the road against their rivals Truckee HS, a team that was undefeated in conference play before the game with South Tahoe on Saturday, October 22.

South Tahoe High sends six to 3A State Girls Golf Championship

Six athletes from the South Tahoe High Girls Golf Team represented their school at the 2022 Class 3A State Girls Golf Championship on October 17-18 at Genoa Lakes.
