SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tube Tahoe is hosting days on the snow this winter for families with special needs children. On January 22, February 12, and March 19, Tube Tahoe will have two specially designed lanes set up.
The locally owned tubing hill in Meyers is located at 3021 US-50.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the families can enjoy time on tubes, for free.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC) is working on a countywide Comprehensive Child Abuse Prevention Plan and they are seeking help from the public on what child abuse prevention looks like in South Lake Tahoe.
It will be held on Saturday, January 21 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Library. Light snacks will be provided.
This is one session in a series of community listening sessions the CAPC is hosting to seek the feedback of community members on the proposed plan.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After weeks of delayed mail and long hours at the main post office in South Lake Tahoe, change is in the air.
Extra workers from Sacramento have been brought in and the front counter will have extended hours for mail pick-up on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this week to accommodate customers. A new postmaster to replace the void left through retirement is also coming on board.

And while winter is known as a tough time of year, this year has felt especially challenging. From power outages to snow cancellations to days of rain and flooding to higher food prices and service delays … it’s okay to say, things feel hard right now. They are hard.
It’s normal to feel tired and overwhelmed. It’s normal to feel like you can’t fathom another day of snow removal. It’s normal to search Zillow houses in Maui and dream about a warmer place to live.
Take Care Tahoe’s Adopt-A-Hydrant campaign promotes fire safety during major snowstorms

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - As a parade of winter storms continues to batter the Tahoe region, Take Care Tahoe and local fire departments are promoting a campaign to encourage community members to keep fire hydrants clear of snow and debris in an effort to help fire personnel should an emergency occur.
With over 4,000 fire hydrants in the Tahoe Basin, Take Care Tahoe asks community members to Adopt-A-Hydrant in their neighborhood by clearing a three-foot radius on every side of the hydrant and to the road’s edge every time it snows.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If conditions are favorable, the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) will resume prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe. Beginning tomorrow, the Nevada Division of Forestry is scheduled to burn hand piles near Spooner Lake and the USDA Forest Service is scheduled to burn a large machine pile this Friday near Baldwin Beach. Road reopens after snowslide closed US50 over Echo Summit for hours

10:30AM UPDATE: US50 over Echo Summit has reopened. Use caution and expect long lines of vehicles leaving after an almost seven-hour closure.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A snow slide on Echo Summit reported at 3:44 a.m. has left US50 closed as Caltrans crews work to clear it off. As of 8:30 a.m., Caltrans crews are turning the backed-up traffic around as signage says "extended hold due to heavy snow."
The CHP report on the incident said 8-10 feet of snow is blocking the lanes at the summit.

STATELINE, Nev. - Lake Tahoe Epic Curling celebrates 10 years with special public events throughout the month of January.
Lake Tahoe Epic Curling (LTEC) was founded in January 2013. The roots of the club started with occasional curling sessions at the South Tahoe Ice Arena.
This quickly grew into a passionate group of curlers.
In 2019, the club built a year-round, dedicated curling facility in the basement of the TRPA building in Stateline.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - Most Lake Tahoe residents are getting a little weary of endless snow storms, but this is a good news bad news forecast!
First the bad news - there will be periods of moderate to heavy snowfall snow accumulation likely down to western Nevada valley floors as the next storm moves through the region. The storm is starting to track a bit southward so Tahoe-Carson City south to Mono County should get most of the snow.
Cars crash into two different snow removal vehicles in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two vehicles ran into two pieces of snow removal equipment within yards of each other in South Lake Tahoe Sunday morning.
El Dorado County had snow removal operations on North Upper Truckee Road near US-50 just after 10 a.m. on Sunday, January 15.
A Tesla and a Toyota 4Runner were involved according to the California Highway Patrol report. An ambulance was on the scene but nobody has been transported at this time.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It appears there are a couple of more storms on their way to the Sierra, but then there is a light at the end of the tunnel, finally!
The main remaining storm in this series is Monday, with a weaker one Wednesday. Signals at this time show a much less active weather pattern for the rest of January.
There is a chance of 2-4 more inches of snow tonight, then 3-5 inches on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Rain and snow helping to put dent in drought, snowpack at record levels for the date

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The national drought map has looked ominous for some with its dark red colors depicting extreme drought spread throughout California. For more than two years much of the state has been in at least a severe stage of drought, if not extreme.
Just one month ago, 85 percent of the state was in severe drought. Now that number is 46 percent - while there is still some stage of drought, the outlook is much better. There have been ten atmospheric rivers hit the state since the December measurement.
Travel through the Sierra Nevada not recommended due to heavy snow

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It is slow going through the Sierra Saturday as the latest atmospheric river hits California, bringing heavy snow to the mountains.
Coming with the snow is a mess on area highways.
I-80 at this hour is closed due to low visibility and spinouts, and US-50 has been held at times for the same reason and avalanche control though it is currently open.
SR-88 is closed from Red Lake to the Carson Spur.
SR-89 continues to be closed around Emerald Bay.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The United States Postal Service (USPS) is having special pick-up dates for mail in South Lake Tahoe this weekend after weeks of delayed mail service.
Severe winter storms in the Tahoe Basin have impacted access to some postal delivery routes in the Tahoe Basin including South Lake Tahoe and Incline Village, causing customers to wait at the post office for over an hour to collect undelivered mail.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Longtime local dentist and a member of the first Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees Dr. Frederick “Fritz” Wenck passed away on January 5, 2023, after a period of declining health in recent months.
Lake Tahoe Community College staff, faculty, board members, and administrators join the Wenck family in mourning the passing of Dr. Wenck who served LTCC for 42 years.

Suspect in Douglas County Walmart armed robbery arrested

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) has arrested a suspect in the December 30, 2022 robbery at Walmart in northern Douglas County.
DCSO released a photo of the suspect and his vehicle on January 4 and leads from the public led them to Curtis Brahic in a motel room in Reno. Brahic was identified as the individual who had committed the robbery and was charged with armed robbery. He is currently in the Douglas County Jail with $25,000 bail.

Great American Cookies opens store in Heavenly Village

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Great American Cookies has just opened its first location in South Lake Tahoe at The Shops at Heavenly Village. The dessert chain’s claim to fame is creating the Original Cookie Cake which dates to 1977.
They are also known for their delicious, fresh-baked cookies, Double Doozies, and brownies.

Chase International releases year end real estate report: Volume down, value consistent

Chase International released its 2022 Year-end Real Estate Market Report which showed a lower overall volume in sales and available units for sale. Still, year over year, there is consistent value growth for homeowners throughout the Northern Nevada and California markets.
“Overall, real estate as an asset shows a consistent increase in value over time and remains the single largest contribution to household wealth,” said Susan Lowe, president/corporate broker for Chase International.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to weather and delayed flights, Tahoe Arts Project is postponing the TJ Carter concert set for this week in South Lake Tahoe. Plans are to reschedule for March. Details to follow.
65-foot maximum rules for truckers on Sierra highways

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Those watching the roads around Lake Tahoe during storms will often see a California Highway Patrol (CHP) incident where a "big rig" is stuck going around Emerald Bay on SR-89.
During normal conditions, a truck and attached trailer have a difficult time making the switchbacks just south of Emerald Point but add snow and the situation is dangerous.
The highway around Emerald Bay has been closed during the most recent storms, yet two large trucks have had to be towed after being stuck at the switchbacks just before the road closure gate.
