Tamarack the burned bear breaks out of South Lake Tahoe enclosure

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The bear burned in the Tamarack Fire and rehabilitating at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) has escaped its enclosure. Even though badly injured and bandaged up, the bear named Tamarack found its way out on sometime after seen on cameras in its enclosure on the evening of August 1.

The 25-28-pound bear was able to dig under a secured electrical fence, even with the burned and bandaged front paws.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There were 163 new cases of COVID-19 in El Dorado County since Friday.

The 14-day case rates and number of the population per 100,000 residents are continuing to climb closer to data seen at the height of the pandemic.

The new cases for El Dorado County:

Pollock Pines, Camino, Kyburz - 583 cases - +5 - The 14-day new case rate is 25 with 184 per 100,000 residents.
El Dorado Hills - 2494 cases - +22 - The 14-day new case rate is 127 with 299 per 100,000 residents.

Comment period opens on CEQA documents for Pioneer Trail/ US50 roundabout

MEYERS, Calif. - The environmental documents have been completed for the planned roundabout for the intersection of US50 and Pioneer Trail in Meyers.

The County of El Dorado is the project sponsor and lead agency, in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation. They are proposing to convert the existing signalized intersection at the US50/SR89 and Pioneer Trail In Meyers into a three-leg modern roundabout. This is part of their improvement project, the Pioneer Trail/US Highway 50 Intersection Safety Improvement Project.

Taylor Creek Visitor Center and Kiva Beach closed for week due to positive plague tests

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Taylor Creek Visitor Center and Kiva Beach will be closed for the week after plague tests on wildlife in the area came back positive.

El Dorado County Vector Control will be conducting treatments in the area through Friday, August 6 so the parking lots at both areas will be closed as well as the surrounding areas. They should complete eradication treatments on Thursday, and the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit anticipates having the two areas open by the weekend.

Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe celebrates 30 years on the South Shore

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe celebrated 30 years of providing services to children and their families on the South Shore with a big party on Friday.

The Angel of Tahoe, Lisa Maloff, joined founding board members of the club, staff and children to celebrate with a combined summer party and birthday party. There were large inflatable slides and bounce houses, a magic show from Alex Ramon, and of course, cake.

Two cases of Tick-Borne Relapsing Fever in Lake Tahoe area

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County Public Health is reminding residents and visitors to use precautions to prevent Tick-Borne Relapsing Fever (TBRF), after receiving reports of two cases of the illness in the past two months.

$23,000 in fines to date as almost half of VHRs permits expire South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When Measure T was approved by voters in 2018, all vacation home rentals (VHRs) not in a commercial zone or the tourist core area would be gone by December 31, 2021. No permits are being renewed this year outside of those two exempt areas.

Between January and June, 430 VHRs were phased out in South Lake Tahoe with 492 permits remaining as of June 1, 2021.

Each month the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has tracked records concerning VHR permit activity since January 2021:

National Night Out event in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is partnering with area first responders to host the National Night Out 2021 event on Tuesday, August 3.

This year's National Night Out will be held at the Blue Zone Sports parking lot at the Y from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

There will be food, games, activities, a mobile vaccine clinic, resources, and various first responder vehicles. This is a family-friendly event and a great chance to connect with our local first responders.

Tahoe Womens Community Fund Non-Profit Mixer along Ski Run Boulevard

Tahoe Women's Community Fund is putting on the first ever Non-Profit Market Mixer on Thursday, August 26 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This is a free event that will allow you to mix with your friends and neighbors and learn about some of the great non-profits in our community.

This farmer's-market style evening will feature almost 40 non-profits who will be set up on Ski Run Boulevard to showcase themselves to any interested community member.

Letter: I really hope the City of South Lake Tahoe reconsiders SnowGlobe

Think about it, in the nine years or so that SnowGlobe has been here it has violated its contract over and over and over. The most recent violation has been SnowGlobe's inability to abide by its current contract to identify an alternative site by June of 2021. Why would you work with someone who constantly doesn't follow through on an agreed to contract? Oh, please don't let them tell you that they didn't have time last year to research locations because of COVID. They had plenty of time because they didn't have to produce an event last year.

COVID-19 cases continue to spike; Figures from El Dorado, Douglas and Washoe counties

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There were 62 new cases of COVID-19 in El Dorado County since yesterday.

The 14-day case rates and number of the population per 100,000 residents are continuing to climb closure to data seen at the height of the pandemic. According to Test Well of South Lake Tahoe and Reno, they had a 21 percent positivity rate on 100 tests on Thursday alone. Tests they did over the previous seven days was 12.6 percent and 10.4 percent for previous two weeks. Below is the information for El Dorado County, Douglas County and Washoe County.

Teen falls 50 feet to bottom of Eagle Falls at Emerald Bay

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A teenage boy sustained serious injuries after falling at Eagle Falls on Wednesday.

At approximately 1:33 p.m., El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) received a 911 call about a long fall at the falls in Emerald Bay State Park. EDSO was joined by multiple Lake Tahoe area law enforcement, rescue personnel and fire agencies at the scene.

Multi-agency emergency evacuation plan to be unveiled at City Council meeting Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe had a printed evacuation plan that was well though out by regions and neighborhoods, but many found it confusing and it did not include the areas of the county that are neighbors to the City. And it was for fires.

Flash Flood Watch issued for Lake Tahoe, western Nevada and the Sierra

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Friday, July 30 from the afternoon through the evening.

Placer County Supervisors approve temporary moratorium on new VHR permits on North Shore

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. - Due to a growing housing crisis in the North Lake Tahoe Region, the Placer County Board of Supervisors voted on Tuesday to approve a temporary moratorium on the issuance of new short-term rental permits. This is just the latest in a series of actions to to and address the unprecedented crisis.

The self-guided Lake Tahoe Art Tour is back for 2021, the 14th anniversary of giving the public a glimpse into local art studios with a unique opportunity to meet the artists, and view, and buy, art directly from the makers. It will be held over two weekends, July 30 - August 1, and August 6-8.

Although the tour this year has been scaled back to a smaller size than usual, there are still 11 locations and 21 artists, and includes a wide range of photographers, jewelers, painters, printmakers, and ceramicists.

Barton Foundation purchases 30 high-tech wheelchairs for patients

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Continuing its mission of advancing local healthcare through philanthropy, the Barton Foundation has purchased 30 new high-tech wheelchairs for Barton Health, an award of $90,000. The wheelchairs have been distributed for use throughout Barton Memorial Hospital, Lake Tahoe Surgery Center, Barton Center for Orthopedics & Wellness, and the Barton Community Health Center.

Over 10,000 Liberty Utilities customers without power in South Lake Tahoe

9:10PM UPDATE: Power has been restored to some areas of the South Shore including parts of the North Upper Truckee Road area, some of Gardner Mountain and Pioneer Trail.

We don't know the reason for the outage at this time.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities is reporting 10,814 of its customers in the South Lake Tahoe are without power Tuesday evening.

Crews are responding and they are estimating the power will be restored by around 10:30 p.m.

Next El Dorado County public meeting on redistricting scheduled

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Every ten years, local governments use new census data to redraw their district lines to reflect how local populations have changed. Assembly Bill 849 (2019) requires cities and counties to engage communities in the redistricting process by holding public hearings and/or workshops and doing public outreach, including to non-English-speaking communities.

The second public meeting on redistricting for El Dorado County will be held on Wednesday, August 4 at 6:00 p.m.

Nevada brings back mask mandate - Stateline casino staff and guests must wear masks starting Friday

The State of Nevada is joining other states in reinstating mask mandates due to a rising number of COVID-19 cases. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention guidance said this week that even vaccinated people should wear masks indoors in public in high-transmission communities.

Within hours of the CDC announcement, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak announced the state would be following the guidance and reinstate a mask mandate since 12 of its 17 counties are considered high-transmission.

The county doesn't have data on how many of the new cases are breakthrough cases or the Delta variant, but they have been been alerted to 11 Delta variant cases, all with lab collection dates between May and early July.

Pollock Pines, Camino, Kyburz - 574 cases - +1 - The 14-day new case rate is 22 with 162 per 100,000 residents.
El Dorado Hills - 2438 cases - +12 - The 14-day new case rate is 99 with 233 per 100,000 residents.

Tamarack Fire now 59% contained, mapped at 68,327 acres

Firefighters are working on more containment of the Tamarack Fire, which reached 59 percent today. So far, 68,327 acres have burned. 1,321 personnel remain on the fire which started by a lightning strike July 4.

Crews are working on all ends of the fire to make sure there is no more heat
Division K, which is the northern and eastern sides of the fire has a solid containment line. They are mopping up in areas along US395.

Brantley Gilbert cancels Lake Tahoe tour stop

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Caesars Entertainment has announced country singer Brantley Gilbert will no longer be playing at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys this Friday.

The artist canceled due to illness.

Refunds are available at point of purchase. According to Ticketmaster, this is the only Gilbert show canceled in the tour. He is scheduled to play Thursday in Costa Mesa and Saturday in Utah at Country Fanfest though those shows may still be canceled.

"We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to seeing you on the road soon!" said Gilbert in a statement.

Celebration of Life to be held for long-time South Lake Tahoe local Randall Brown

Randall "Randy" Brown, age 69, passed away in his South Lake Tahoe home on Wednesday, April 28, 2021.

Randall was born in Iowa, and was raised by his loving parents George and Verna. He graduated high school and, in 1974, he fell in love with South Lake Tahoe and was a resident for over 45 years.

He retired after a very successful career as a General Contractor building custom homes and owning his own business, RB Tile & Construction for over 30 years. He is survived by his twin daughters, Alexis and Ciara as well as his granddaughter, Gabriela.

Bear burned in Tamarack Fire rehabbing at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A bear cub found burned at a Markeleeville home is now at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care getting the help he needs. On Sunday, July 25 at approximately 7:30 p.m., LTWC received a call from a homeowner who had just received permission to return to their property in the middle of the Tamarack Fire. They had returned home and found the burned cub in their yard.

Good Samaritan helps save family on Lake Tahoe during quick-moving storm

MARLA BAY, Nev. - One man is lucky to be alive tonight after jumping into Lake Tahoe to save a nine-year-old boy who had drifted away from a pontoon charter boat on Monday.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - With firefighters getting a handle on the Tamarack Fire that burned in Alpine, Lyon, and Douglas counties, members of the community are showing their support with "thank you" signs.

Douglas High School in Minden, Nev., was the command center for the fire. People came out with over 50 signs and banners to express their thanks to the fire crews working on the fire which is now 68,103 acres in size and 54 percent contained.

Flash Flood Watch issued for Lake Tahoe and Western Nevada

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Flash Flood Watch in effect from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, July 26. Monsoonal moisture spreading north into east central California, Lake Tahoe, the Sierra Front and western Nevada will produce slow moving thunderstorms across the region today.

Slow moving hybrid type thunderstorms could produce short periods of heavy rains, NWS Reno said.

Donated artwork in South Lake Tahoe destroyed by vandals

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was "heartbreaking" for David and Jamie Orr to find artwork displayed outside their South Lake Tahoe business destroyed by vandal(s) over the weekend.

Malcolm Tibbets, a former vice president at Heavenly Mountain Resort and now a professional wood turner, created the three pieces that have been seen outside the Cowork Tahoe building for the past four years.

One of the three pieces of art that greeted the passerby along Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Harrison Avenue is now in pieces.

The 67,764 acre Tamarack Fire now 45% contained , roads reopen

Firefighters made significant progress on the Tamarack Fire overnight and it is now 45 percent contained. Evacuations have been lifted for nearly 2,000 people, and US-395 and SR-88 have both reopened.

1,623 personnel remain on the lightning-caused fire which is now 67,764 acres, a gain of about 1,000 acres.

SR-89 is still closed, though open to residents only, in both directions from CA-88 to US-395 in California. Highway 4 is closed over Ebbett's Pass.

Food Bank monthly giveaway Wednesday in South Lake Tahoe - Volunteers needed

Chance of showers and thunderstorms all week for the Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Expect widespread thick smoke from area fires to continue to impact the region at least through Monday, and possibly Tuesday. While to most impact will be to the Reno-Carson Valley area, some smoke will continue to fill the Lake Tahoe Basin though it should be subsiding, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Evacuation orders lifted in many areas of Tamarack Fire - some roads remain closed

Evacuations for the Topaz Ranch Estates and Topaz Lake lifted at 2:00 p.m. today, July 25, residents are allowed to return to their homes. Non-mandatory evacuations remain in place for the Holbrook Junction/Highlands area and Spring Valley areas.

Tamarack fire at 27% containment, 66744 acres burn. Escorts into evacuated area Sunday

New mapping of the Tamarack Fire was done overnight, and it is now measured at 66,744 acres and is 27 percent contained. 1,557 personnel are on the fire that originally started on July 4. Estimated complete containment date is August 31.

Smoke from the 190,625 acre Dixie Fire north of Lake Tahoe has moved into our area and may affect air quality and visibility, thus preventing some water and retardant drops from the air.
