Firefest this weekend in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/22/2015 - 1:43pmAlways a crowd pleaser, the annual Firefest is on Saturday, September 26 at the South Lake Tahoe Airport from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This free event highlights fire and life safety for children and families with exhibits and hands on demonstrations.
Helicopters will star at Firefest when they land at the airport. The three "Super Scoopers" currently making the airport their home will be parked on the tarmac as long as they aren't dispatched to a fire.
Mobile food bank to be in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday

The Food Bank of El Dorado County in partnership with California Emergency Food Link will be in South Lake Tahoe to host a Mobile Food Pantry Distribution on Wednesday, September 23, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. to bring food to those who need it most.
Superintendent to discuss student test score results at meeting
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/21/2015 - 9:33pmLast spring, Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) students in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 11th grades took a new style of state testing. The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) was an on-line assessment that measured their problem solving and critical thinking skills.
LTUSD Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater will present the results to the School Board Trustees during Tuesday's board meeting.
Northern California fire update
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/21/2015 - 7:09pmThe Butte Fire near Jackson, CA continues to burn but is now 74% contained. So far, 70,760 acres have burned. The destructive and deadly fire destroyed 545 homes and 356 outbuildings, as well as damaging another 42 structures. Two civilians have died in the fire.

Man who said he drank Round-Up at SLT City Council meeting arrested in Reno

He said he was a local wildland firefighter and wanted to bring the use of pesticides to a halt. He told the council he would drink the chemical weed killer Round-Up if they wouldn't commit to ending the use of pesticides that get into Lake Tahoe.
Tahoe Chamber and TRYP team up for October mixer

Set at the new Conference Center at Beach Retreat and Lodge at Tahoe, the Mixed Up Mixer allows both TRYP and Tahoe Chamber memberships to mingle with one another while learning how these organizations are benefiting the South Shore community.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.
Hard Rock Lake Tahoe donates school supplies to Bijou Community School

The property-wide donation drive was coordinated by the property's H.R. Manager, Didi Aspero. They collected items such as notebooks, binders, and pencils. They also donated $500.
Season wraps up for inaugural cross country night bike races
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/21/2015 - 2:42pmThe inaugural Tahoe Games Bike Night Series, presented by On Course Events, Tahoe Center for Orthopedics and the Lake Tahoe Golf Course will conclude with the final races of the season on Saturday, September 26.
These family-friendly x-country night bike races feature a custom illuminated course that runs through the Lake Tahoe Golf Course, over fairways, into the rough, through sand traps and over bridges with the occasional cart path. The course is approximately 3 miles per lap, with most classes riding 2 laps.
Thousands participate in IRONMAN Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/20/2015 - 11:03pmAlmost 2,500 athletes from around the world experienced a Lake Tahoe many will never know. A 2.4 miles swim in the lake was followed by a 112 mile bike ride and capped off with a 26.2 mile run.
Emerging from the pack as the overall winner was Gregory Lindquist, an attorney from Boulder, CO who competes in the Men's 30-34 age group. He finished in 9 hrs 39 minutes and 23 seconds. After hours of competition, second place finisher Ryan Linden was just 29 seconds behind. Linden is from Washington, MI and is also in the 30-34 group.
Free prescription drug disposal day on Saturday
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/20/2015 - 10:32pmThe El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and South Lake Tahoe Police Department will be taking back unwanted prescription drugs on Saturday, September 26 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Lira's Market in Meyers.
Take expired or unused drugs as the disposal site. No sharps will be accepted.
Prescription drug abuse continues to be a problem in the community, and removing unwanted containers of drugs from medicine cabinets will take them out of the hands of abusers.

The work week will starts off with three days in the 70s before cooling into the 60s by the weekend.

Hundreds turn out for Grand Opening of Bijou Bike Park
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/19/2015 - 11:35pmLong after the barbecue was over, long after the booths, announcers and crowds were gone, cyclists were still riding the new trails at the Bijou Bike Park as the sun was setting on Saturday night.
The Bijou Bike park was officially opened in a ceremony that followed the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th Anniversary parade.
After opening statements by park creators, City Council and the Mayor, Ted Wendell spoke to the crowd as the Bijou Bike Park was dedicated to his late brother Tom, who died in 2012.

Benicia family missing following El Dorado County fire

Adam Buchanan, his 7-year-old son Gavin and Gavin’s mother Molly McAfee have been reported missing after a fire gutted Buchanan’s cabin near Georgetown in El Dorado County “last weekend,” according to the release.
The actual date of the fire was not immediately available.
The statement was released by the law offices of Gizzi & Reep, LLP in Benicia.
Reno Gazette Journal files lawsuit against Sparks over pot business licenses
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/19/2015 - 10:05pmThe Reno Gazette-Journal filed a lawsuit Friday against the city of Sparks in an effort to compel them to release the names of medical marijuana business licensees.
As the newspaper expands its coverage of Nevada’s burgeoning medical marijuana industry, the RGJ has requested and collected copies of current business licenses for cultivation centers, dispensaries and production facilities in the area. Reno and Washoe County both have policies to release all of the information that the licenses entail.
Neighbors want South Lake Tahoe property gone

Since that time, information has surfaced about one of the subjects, the Tahoe Pines Lodge.
New owner Darren Cobrae said he wanted to remodel the aging motel which has become home to long term renters. His plans for the property included adding two restaurants and retail space.

Community Carnival to raise funds for South Tahoe High yearbook
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/18/2015 - 8:05pmThe inaugural South Tahoe Community Carnival will be held at the South Tahoe High School on Saturday, September 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be games, prizes, a velcro wall, Sumo wrestling, performances, food, fun and school tours.
The carnival ill be set up at the school's softball field.
Last year, all students at South Tahoe High School were able to receive a free yearbook and they'd like to continue that tradition. All funds raised at the carnival go to support the STHS yearbook.
What is a Chautauqua?

Chautauqua was a very popular adult education movement in the United States during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Named after Chautauqua Lake where the first was held, Chautauqua assemblies expanded and spread throughout rural America until the mid-1920s.
Former US President Theodore Roosevelt was quoted as saying that Chautauqua is "the most American thing in America."
Environmental Technology & Sustainability degree added at LTCC

The new ETS program offers three areas of concentration: biological resources, physical resources, and sustainability. Students can earn an Associate of Arts degree, as well as a Certificate of Achievement.

The aftermath of Proposition 47: Property crime up in South Lake Tahoe

Since then, South Lake Tahoe and other cities across the state are seeing a big increase in crime. Prop. 47 reduced the penalties for certain theft and drug crimes in California. Several crimes that were once a felony because a misdemeanor overnight.

Woman arrested for auto theft in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/17/2015 - 2:16pmThe arrest of a 21-year-old transient in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday night follows a weekend where four cars were stolen and one was reported as missing.
As reported in South Tahoe Now, the cars were stolen from outside Domino's, Brother's Place, a Ruth Avenue business and a residence on Wiliam Avenue between Friday and Saturday, September 11 and 12. In each case, the ignition keys had been left in the vehicle.
"Tilted" forecasts for El Nino's affects on Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/17/2015 - 7:45amAs El Niño continues to strengthen in the Pacific the official forecast from the Climate Prediction Center continues to have the odds slightly tilted towards above average precipitation for southern and central California.
The forecast also has the odds slightly tilted towards warmer than average temperatures during the winter.

Butte Fire: Two Fatalities Confirmed, Containment Grows To 47 Percent
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/16/2015 - 10:18pm6:47 p.m. - Cal Fire says containment on the Butte Fire has grown to 47 percent, with acreage burned holding at 71,780 acres.
Damage assessment shows 233 residences, 175 outbuildings and 15 other structures burned in the fire, with 6,000 additional structures still threatened.
Officials ask that area residents remain vigilant, as the fire is still active in many areas. They also ask for people to assist by calling the appropriate authorities for specific situations:

Rash of auto thefts in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/16/2015 - 9:43pmIn just three days, five cars were reported stolen in South Lake Tahoe.
On Thursday, September 10, a man who lives in the 2400 block of William Avenue called police to report his car stolen. When police arrived, they found out the man had lent the car to someone who hadn't returned it.
The following day, a white Ford F250 with a rack was reported stolen in the 1000 block of William. It has not been recovered and there are no suspects. The Nevada license plate number is NRC917.
Three cars were stolen on Saturday, September 12.
Facts about Saturday's South Lake Tahoe 50th Anniversary Parade

High tech anti-theft dots to help South Lake Tahoe Police
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/16/2015 - 8:12pmWith an increase in the number of bicycle thefts and other property crimes in South Lake Tahoe, a new high tech device to help the fight on crime is now being introduced by the police department.
The new technology is called Anti-Theft Dots. This DNA for property crime will assist the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) in their efforts to combat theft in the community. Property crime is the number one crime statistic in the nation according to the Department of Justice.

Over 70 people enjoyed food donated by Getaway Cafe, MacDuffs Pub, Riva Grill, My Thai Cuisine and Samurai for the spread they put on.
The teachers are still talking about the great food!

Local youth volunteers needed for Tahoe Teen Court
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/16/2015 - 6:58pmSouth Lake Tahoe students in grades 8 through 12 who live in El Dorado County are invited to participate in the juvenile justice system through the Teen Court program.
Orientation training will be held on October 1, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Superior Court, Department 4, located at 1354 Johnson Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe. After completing the mandatory orientation training, teens will serve as court personnel for real cases in which a minor has committed an offense, admitted the offense and chosen to be judged by his/her peers.

Woman involved in deadly South Lake Tahoe accident pleads no-contest
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/16/2015 - 12:09pmIn the early hours of November 24, 2014, a drunken high speed car ride down Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe ended the life of one local woman and injured another.
The driver of the car, Olga Nayeli Pena-Arce, pleaded no-contest on September 14, 2015 to charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury.
South Lake Tahoe News Briefs

Their ten-year-old sign came down on Tuesday and will be replaced. The driveway and hotel entrance area all being revamped.
Last week, the resort let go four directors including the Food & Beverage Director. A call was made to the property's new General Manager Tim Tretton to confirm, but his office said "no comment." Tretton has been on the job since August 4.
Winners announced for City's History Hunt

Mark Carlson promoted to Assistant City Manager

Public's help sought in South Shore bicycle theft

At approximately 7:50 p.m. on the August 30, 2015, deputies took a report of a stolen 2014 GIANT Mountain bicycle. The bike is black in color and has the word "GIANT" in white lettering.
Douglas investigators: Elderly Gardnerville couple die in apparent suicide pact
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/15/2015 - 1:08pmAn 86-year-old Gardnerville man who held Douglas County deputies in a Sept. 1 standoff in which the man's wife was deceased inside the home, died Friday from apparent organ failure after ingesting medications, a Douglas County sheriff's sergeant said Tuesday. Investigators say the couple made a suicide pact.
William Lewis, 86, died at Renown Medical Center in Reno. His wife, Phyllis Lewis, 82, was found dead inside the couple's Edlesborough Circle home, said Sgt. Pat Brooks.
USFS to close some sites in South Lake Tahoe to address plague issue
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/15/2015 - 1:02pmTallac Historic Site, Kiva Beach, Valhalla and the Taylor Creek Visitor Center will all be closed on Wednesday so the U.S. Forest Service can conduct pesticide treatments to reduce the risk of plague. The Pope-Baldwin Bike Trail will remain open, but signs will be posted where the trail crosses closed sites.
The gates to these areas will close on Tuesday evening, September 15 at 7 p.m. and likely reopen on Thursday morning, September 17.

November 17, 2015 - 12:00pm Join Tahoe Chamber and its ambassadors at the Members Meet Up Lunch, an intimate networking session exclusive to chamber members. This monthly event offers members the opportunity to introduce themselves and their businesses to a dynamic group of professionals.
Each month Tahoe Chamber will choose a local restaurant to host these networking events. This month's location will be Bear Moon Bar and Grill!
