At this time drowning is suspected in both cases though an investigation is being conducted and the office is waiting for toxicology and lab results.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Wildlife biologists for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) this morning safely immobilized a large female conflict bear responsible for at least 21 DNA-confirmed home break-ins and extensive property damage in the South Lake Tahoe area since 2022. Her three cubs were also captured in the effort. One of the cubs was the one hit by a car on US50 on July 21 near Denny's, but it had been seen often throughout South Lake Tahoe eating, climbing, and walking.
Haze in Lake Tahoe Basin coming mostly from dust over the playas, some smoke
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/04/2023 - 1:05pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The haze in the Lake Tahoe Basin Friday is from a few different sources, but the majority of it is caused by dust that had been kicked up over the playas yesterday evening due to thunderstorm outflows. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said there was just enough low-level airflow to allow that dust to sneak into the Lake Tahoe Basin.

NDOT installing wrong-way driver detection systems on some Carson City freeway ramps

Beginning Aug. 4 through late August, intermittent shoulder closures will take place during both day and night hours on I-580 freeway ramps between North Carson Street and Fairview Drive.

The Eldorado Forest Interpretative Association offers free guided Interpretative hikes in and around the Carson Pass area throughout August and September. These vary from 45 minutes like our historical Devil's Ladder hike to our 3 hour water color painting hikes. We offer Junior ranger hikes for our youth (5-15 years old), and we offer a walk among the trees and flower hikes as well. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is still space available for the two-day Super Spikers Volleyball Skills Clinic August 10-11.
Instructed by South Tahoe High School Varsity coaches and players, the clinic is a fundraiser for the team. The cost for the two days is $100.
It is open to boys and girls, ages 8-13 with all skill levels. The clinic will be held in the Blue and Gold Gym at South Tahoe High from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. each day, plus the Vikings scrimmage between the varsity team and coaches from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A group of eighteen men and women are spending the summer running and cycling 4,000 miles across the country to raise awareness and funds for the Ulman Foundation. Their endeavor, 4K for Cancer, is a program of the foundation which is a non-profit organization that changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer.

Caltrans set to deploy state-of-the-art electronic message signs
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/03/2023 - 7:22pmCaltrans is unveiling more than two dozen state-of-the-art full-color overhead highway message boards along the US50 corridor in El Dorado and Sacramento counties, I5 in Sacramento County and State Highways 70 and 99 in Butte County.
Caltrans District 3 engineers this month are conducting final tests on the 28 new color-changeable message signs. These signs are a first in the state at a cost of about $2.5 million. Other regions have installed these signs as a pilot project.

West Nile Virus found in El Dorado County bird
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/02/2023 - 10:15pmEl Dorado County health officials received confirmation that a bird found in the Lotus area of El Dorado County tested positive for West Nile Virus, the first this year. The bird, a House Finch, was collected on July 21, 2023. West Nile Virus activity was not detected in El Dorado County in 2022.
Confirmation of the West Nile virus-positive bird means the virus is circulating between birds and mosquitoes and there is a heightened risk of infection in humans.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the South Shore started developing and homes were being built in the 1940s, Tahoe Supply Co. was the only place in the area to buy nails, screws, and all other hardware needs. Linne Nelson bought the store in May 1945 from Jack and Irene Meyn who wanted to focus their business adventures on Trading Posts and photography. (Many South Lake Tahoe locals may know the mural on the side of the current El Dorado County building at the corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Takelar Drive - that is Irene Meyn).

Nicholas is survived by his father Richard (Rick), his mother Krista, and his sister Miranda. Nick has a huge extended family as well.
Nick was raised in South Lake Tahoe. He went to Meyers Elementary, South Tahoe Middle School and South Tahoe High School.

STATELINE, Nev. – An arrest has been made in the case of the man who entered the condominiums of two women as they slept on Elk Point Road in July. On the morning of Sunday, July 2, and again on the morning of Monday, July 3, at approximately 4:30 a.m., female guests staying at the Wyndham resort in the 180 block of Elks Point Road in Stateline woke up to an intruder in their room fondling their feet.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you're like me, you love getting lost in a nursery, and Aspen Hollow in South Lake Tahoe allows a respite from the outside world as you plot and plan your garden.
John Fellows opened Aspen Hollow in 1994 on the corner of Emerald Bay Road and Lukins Way as the property fit his vision for creating a magical nursery. He had been creative in his career around the Lake Tahoe area as a mason, woodcarver, sign maker, and the nursery would allow him to take his creativity in a new direction.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a new cafe in South Lake Tahoe, one that is selling something no other spot does in town - antojitos! El Dicho Cafe opened last week on Tamarack Avenue and has coffees, bagels, breakfast burritos, fruit smoothies, flavored Red Bull, juices, fresh pastries, and a full list of antojitos (or Mexican snack food) on its menu.
Perla Bautista has lived in South Lake Tahoe for 39 years and was operating Learn & Play Daycare out of her home when she was able to realize her next dream.
"I wanted to open a coffee shop since I was little," said Perla.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There have been headlines for months about Lake Tahoe "being loved to death" and that tourism numbers are on the rise. Last fall, a Fodor's travel guide suggested those with plans to visit Lake Tahoe should reconsider due to persistent traffic and the impact it has on lake clarity. That same story is now being regenerated in publications from coast to coast.
Yes, the roads are full of cars during the summer and popular ski weekends.
South Lake Tahoe Middle School closed to the public as FBI conducts active shooter training

This training is to enhance the agency's response to active shooter scenarios that will benefit law enforcement, educators, and the South Lake Tahoe community.
The Lake Tahoe Unified School District is hosting Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) at STMS from July 31 through August 3, 2023.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Arts Project (TAP) is holding its annual Music on the Beach on Thursday, August 17 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Lakeshore Lodge and Spa. Gate opens at 6 p.m.
Performing for the evening is the Wesley Orsolic Band with special guest Mauro Di Gioia on saxophone.
The suggested donation for the event is $20.
The evening will include a benefit raffle to support performing arts in the schools and community. Bring food, beverages, blankets, and low-back chairs. No pets are allowed.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Warm and dry weather with typical afternoon breezes will prevail through Monday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Moisture returns for the first few days of August,
bringing chances for mainly afternoon showers and thunderstorms, especially by Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures will also cool by a few degrees by mid-late week, before warming up again next weekend.
The weekly South Lake Tahoe forecast from NWS Reno:
Monday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph increasing to 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon.

South Shore gaming revenues almost even with last year in latest report
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/29/2023 - 6:09pmNevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,245,814,727 for the month of June 2023, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's monthly report released Friday. This amounts to a 2.44 percent decrease compared to the same month a year ago when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,277,029,261. For the fiscal year the gaming win has increased by 3.25 percent with 15,105,608,664 in "win".
The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Al Tahoe neighborhood is holding a Community Clean-up Day on Saturday, August 5, 2023. It will be a great opportunity to get to know other members of the community who are working hard to keep South Lake Tahoe safer from wildfires.

The community is invited to the TJ Maxx parking lot on Tuesday, August 1 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Members from area law enforcement agencies will be there with booths, information, games, activities, patrol & enforcement vehicles, and much more.
Washoe County Sheriff's Office reports accidental drowning at Sand Harbor
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/28/2023 - 6:06pmINCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) is investigating the accidental drowning death of a man at Sand Harbor on Friday, July 28.
At approximately 4:10 p.m., WCSO responded to a report of a possible drowning on the east shore of Lake Tahoe.
WCSO Marine 9, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, U.S. Coast Guard, Sand Harbor Lifeguards, and Nevada State Parks all responded to the area and located an unresponsive adult male subject in the water.

Saint Mary's Head Coach Theresa Romagnolo brings the Gaels Women's soccer team to Lake Tahoe for a pre-season team game and retreat.
Coach Romagnolo is the wife of Alex Romagnolo who grew up in South Lake Tahoe before graduating from South Tahoe High and playing soccer at the University of San Diego.
Caltrans working on SR267 and SR28 in North Lake Tahoe next week

Southwest Gas and its contractor, Q&D Construction, continue work on a gas line replacement project on Highway 28 between Tahoe City and Kings Beach.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Construction has begun on a new housing project in South Lake Tahoe behind the Village Shopping Center, home of the now-closed Raley's. The ground has already broken on four homes in the approved first phase and the developer hopes to have 20 total in the project area.
The project is not without controversy as the City of South Lake Tahoe looks to amend its Tourist Core Area Plan to change two lots in the project area from being zoned as Recreation to Tourist Core Mixed-Use Housing to accommodate more of the high-end housing units.

TAHOE CITY, Calif. - Participants of all ages and abilities on wheels are welcome to join Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC) as they ride 8 or 28 miles to raise funds for its breast cancer education, prevention, and survivorship programs. While raising funds participants promote the B4BC mission of staying healthy and being active.
Participants can also join in on the fun virtually by cruising down their local trail or path and posting to social media if they can’t make it in person.
