South Shore Lake Tahoe gaming revenue plummets due to Caldor Fire

On the other end of things, the South Shore Lake Tahoe casinos win was down 77.24 percent over the same period with their gaming revenue of $5,643,377, according to the State's monthly gaming revenue report Wednesday.
Caltrans in US 50 in South Lake Tahoe doing advance work for $16.8M 2023 project
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/27/2021 - 7:18amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans is alerting motorists of #2 lane and shoulder closures on WB Highway 50 (Lake Tahoe Blvd) at various locations from the "Y" to Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday.
From 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Caltrans staff will be doing utility location work ahead of a safety improvement project planned for 2023.
The U.S. 50 South Lake Tahoe Lighting Safety Project will improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety along the road from the "Y" to the east, ending at the intersection with Pioneer Trail near Stateline.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) and its partners are seeking public input on potential solutions to the spread of aquatic weeds that currently threaten all of Lake Tahoe. They are holding a meeting on Friday, October 29 from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Tahoe Keys Pavilion, 300-498 Ala Wai Blvd, South Lake Tahoe.
A proposed permit for an aquatic weeds control methods test (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System or NPDES) prescribing various treatment options is currently under consideration before the Lahontan Water Board.
Caldor Fire management moves to local control

Starting October 25, on public lands the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will be handling things on the Lake Tahoe side, and the Eldorado National Forest on the West Slope. The final daily update on Inciweb was October 24.

Mazda has done it again. In a sea of otherwise boring-to-drive cars and fake SUVs, they've come out swinging with a stacked team once again with the CX-30, a compact crossover. While crossovers are far from what gets my blood pumping, the CX-30 does in a way no rival can possibly dream of under forty grand. With its delicious blend of style and performance, it's impossible to ignore, all except the fact that it's just too compact.

The topic this week is the history of the Thunderbird Lodge. Kirsten Duane, a long-time local and docent at the historic George Whittell, Jr. home will lead the event with stories about the grounds and the colorful former owner. Kirsten will focus on the building of "The Castle in the Sky," the use of Indian School labor, the Thunderbird Yacht, his pet lion and much more!

Schools and roads closed around Lake Tahoe, power outage to almost 3,000 in South Lake Tahoe

There is a tree down on Glenwood -use an alternate route.
With power resuming in South Lake Tahoe, Barton Health services are scheduled to be fully operational. Patients who are unable to make their appointments should call their office directly to reschedule.
If power does affect operations in the outpatient clinics, patients will be called directly to reschedule appointments.
Barton Memorial Hospital runs on back up generators during power outages to ensure no disruption in medical services.

The Friends of the Library (FOL) Used Book Sale will be held on Saturday, October 30, in the Community Room of the library from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Their goal is to move out the many books, CDs, DVDs and magazines generously donated by the community. For $5 a bag, you can give them a new home! A special table of collections and unusual books will be offered as “make a deal” with the cashier. All the books in the lobby honor bookcases are included in the $5 a bag purchase. So load up and be ready for cozy winter reading.
Boulders come down on US50 over Echo Summit, One lane of traffic for a few hours
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/24/2021 - 9:18pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Rain over Echo Summit caused rocks to fall onto the roadway Sunday, with crews staying in the area for hours to clear debris if needed. While the rocks this morning were easily removed, large boulders fell onto the road Sunday night and they will have to be blasted.
As of 10;00 p.m. Sunday, Caltrans said to expect delays for up to four hours.

The emergency treatments and activities are designed to decrease possible impacts to critical values from the burned area such as life and safety, property, critical natural resources, and cultural resources.

The nonprofit provides opportunities for underserved youth to experience the outdoors while participating in a mentorship program that is designed to prepare them for life’s challenges.
The impactful program has served more than 585 kids as they learn to ski and snowboard, learn leadership skills, and learn the importance of protecting the environment through service projects each year.

Fire restrictions lifted in South Lake Tahoe, Eldorado National Forest
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/23/2021 - 1:22pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the arrival of a major dose of precipitation and 100 percent containment of the Caldor Fire, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue has lifted the burn ban that had been in place for most of the summer.
In the city limits, this means:
Charcoal and pellet BBQs are allowed
Propane/Gas BBQs are allowed
Wood fires are allowed at Campground by the Lake
Open wood fires are never allowed in the city at any time except at the Campground by the Lake. This includes outside fire pits.
On Red Flag Days, no outdoor cooking of any kind is ever allowed.

Five locals appointed to newly created Arts, Culture and Tourism Commission

The commission was established via resolution on August 20. Interested members of the community were asked to apply and seven applications were received. The City sought to have applications from youth and for a spot for a non-voting member from the South Lake Tahoe Tourism Improvement District or Lake Tahoe Lodging Association. None were received from these segments.

TERC offering Lake Tahoe residents free sugar pine seedlings
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/23/2021 - 10:42amThe UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) is offering free sugar pine seedlings to Tahoe residents October 29-31 as part of a restoration project funded by the Tahoe Fund and the California Tahoe Conservancy. The goal of the project is to establish a new generation of genetically diverse sugar pines that can withstand the threats of climate change, including drought and bark beetle outbreaks. By restoring native sugar pines to the area and increasing their genetic diversity, the overall forest will benefit.
POBOB Outlaw Motorcycle Gang member arrested in Douglas County

Jay Prater, a Douglas County resident, was arrested on a federal indictment on charges of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance.

Forest Service warns of debris flows, flooding and rockfall within Caldor Fire area
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/22/2021 - 5:33pmThe U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and Eldorado National Forest are both urging extreme caution during the upcoming storm event that will affect Lake Tahoe and the Sierra.
There is potential with the atmospheric river hitting the Sierra starting Sunday for record and near-record precipitation for 2-day totals in the month of October. South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe City could see five inches of liquid in two days. For Tahoe City, that would be the second-highest amount following the 5.72" that fell in 1909.
Sandbag locations in South Lake Tahoe, Meyers and Douglas County

A weak system will be brushing the area tomorrow, followed by a strong atmospheric river late Saturday night through Monday. This has the potential for strong winds, copious amounts of rainfall, and heavy upper elevation mountain snow. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said avoiding travel in the mountains during this time would be a good idea.
El Dorado County, Douglas County and the City of South Lake Tahoe are all urging residents to be prepared, especially in areas near the Caldor and Tamarack burn scars.

In order to add "988" as a national suicide hotline, all areas in the country that had a prefix of 988 will have to change to a 10-digit requirement on all local calls starting Sunday.

Heavy rainfall from an atmospheric river will move into the region Saturday night and may continue into Monday morning. High snow levels will lower to near 6000 feet sometime Monday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Wilbur Martinez-Guzman pleads guilty to Northern Nevada murders

Caltrans now offers volunteers up to $250 for highway litter removal

The Adopt-A-Highway program has been one of the longest-standing and successful government-public partnerships in the state. Since its inception in 1989, more than 120,000 Californians have cleaned and enhanced over 15,000 shoulder-miles of roadside. The new pilot program will augment the overall goals of the Clean California program by providing additional resources to maintain and beautify the state's roadways.
El Dorado Smile Van to visit South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/21/2021 - 11:05amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado Smiles Dental Van will be at two South Lake Tahoe schools in the month of November. They will provide a comprehensive exam to children in collaboration with Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD).
The exam will include x-rays, cleaning, fluoride sealants and complete oral exams.
Most insurances are accepted including Medi-Cal/Denti-Cal. A sliding fee is available for those that qualify. After receiving a health history and consent form, a dental representative will contact the family to schedule an appointment while the van is in town.

COVID-19 cases for South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/20/2021 - 7:51pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There have been 37 new cases of COVID-19 since yesterday in El Dorado County. All other counties around Lake Tahoe are reported once a week, on Fridays.
Pollock Pines, Camino, Kyburz - 870 cases - +2 - The 14-day new case rate is 30 with 221 per 100,000 residents.
El Dorado Hills - 3315 cases - +7 - The 14-day new case rate is 71 with 167 per 100,000 residents.
Diamond Springs, El Dorado - 757 cases - +3 - The 14-day new case rate is 23 with 245 per 100,000 residents.
City Council approves several items concerning housing in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/20/2021 - 3:59pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Council approved a few items during its meeting on Tuesday that have to do with addressing the current housing situation in South Lake Tahoe.
They approved a Long-Term Rental Incentive Grant Pilot Program that will connect owners of unused home to local employees seeking housing. The core of the program centers around providing a one-time cash grant to encourage property owners to convert homes and vacant rooms into long-term rentals. The funds being used for the incentives come from an allocation from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
Halloween Happenings map - Lake Tahoe Historical Society creates map of decorated homes
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/20/2021 - 11:17amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the second consecutive year, the Lake Tahoe Historical Society has published a printable map that shows many South Lake Tahoe area homes that are decorated for Halloween. The map was so popular in 2020 that it was created again.
Museum volunteer Anita Limbird drove around the community at night, noting decorated homes to put on the map. Check out the creativity from your neighbors by walking or driving by.

Celebrate the spirit of make believe and a sense of community all in one parking lot.
On Sunday, Oct. 31 from 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m., drive through the Kahle Park Spooktacular sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe. Everyone stays in their cars to trick-or-treat at the drive-through event.
Enter the Kahle Park parking lot from the Kingsbury Grade side. Stay in your car to enjoy the treat-filled ride.
