South Shore 4th of July fireworks canceled for 2021

The Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority announced Wednesday they will be canceling the 2021 Fourth of July “Lights on the Lake” fireworks display following months of careful discussion and consultation with area partners.
This follows the decisions by organizers of North Lake Tahoe and Incline Village fireworks shows to not hold them this year.
Interactive Reading Forest project installed at Taylor Creek

A new exhibit has been installed at the Taylor Creek Visitor's Center in South Lake Tahoe entitled "Reading Forest" that involves both kids and adults in the telling of a tree's story during its life. Reading Forest is a path of artwork that explores ideas of forest health, change, and resilience created by environmental artist Todd Gilens.
Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe receives $200,000 from City's cannabis revenue
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/19/2021 - 10:06amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During its Tuesday evening meeting, the South Lake Tahoe City Council voted to give the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe $200,000 for its building fund. The monies come from the allocation of the available balance in the Cannabis Program fund which at the is time is about $660,000.
The agenda item was for a $100,000 disbursement, but the discussion moved to a higher amount after a community member suggested it since the fund has it available and will only grow in the future.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dr. Sudeep Chandra, University of Nevada Associate Professor of Limnology in the Biology Department, will be speaking at the next Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra club meeting on Thursday, May 20.
Dr. Chandra spoke during the recent Tahoe Fund Talks on the subject of the clarity of Lake Tahoe and what is going on beneath the surface, and on the land, that affects the famous blue of the lake.
The theme of his talk at Soroptimists is "Life beneath Tahoe Waters - The Good, Bad, and the new discoveries."

Lake Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe Wednesday
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/18/2021 - 9:19pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Th National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has a Lake Wind Advisory in effort for the Lake Tahoe Basin Wednesday, May 19 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The advisory is for South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City, Truckee, Markleeville, Stateline, Glenbrook, and Incline Village.
Expect southwest winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Waves 1 to 3 feet are possible. Expect a few wind-prone locations to jump up into the 40-50 mph range.
Small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

There are the gardeners who have been rejoicing in the blooms coming to life in their gardens. The ones who had been anxiously awaiting spring to start treks to the local garden center.
More free PPE available to South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County businesses
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/18/2021 - 12:29pmThrough a partnership with the Tahoe Prosperity Center, the City of South Lake Tahoe, and Dorado County, 87,000 masks and 2,400 bottles of hand sanitizer have been distributed to local businesses to date.
With the upcoming Memorial Day holiday and a busy tourist season, more supplies may be needed and are now available.
For those in need of PPE supplies, please contact Chase Janvrin at chase@tahoeprosperity.org or 530-539-4774 to make arrangements.
The supplies are thanks to a state grant from the California Office of Emergency Services.

City Council holds night meeting Tuesday - topics include cannabis ordinance update, police advisory commission

Motorists should expect traffic delays during gasline replacement on SR28
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/17/2021 - 2:26pmTAHOE CITY, Calif. – Caltrans is notifying motorists that construction is underway to replace gas lines along State Highway 28 in North Lake Tahoe.
Westbound motorists should expect weeknight one-way traffic control from just west of Highway 267 to Beach Street in Kings Beach from 9:00 p.m. to 6 a.m. Eastbound motorists should expect around-the-clock one-way traffic control until 6:00 a.m. Friday this week in the Carnelian Bay area. No weekend traffic restrictions are scheduled.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/17/2021 - 11:41am3:30 PM UPDATE: The USGS has updated the 12:24 p.m. update to 3.4, the same magnitude earlier documented by the UNR Seismological Lab. It was followed at 12:49 p.m. by a 2.8 magnitude in the same area.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Another earthquake centered in the middle of Lake Tahoe did not go unnoticed Monday. The 3.6 magnitude earthquake is in the same region as the recent seismic activity.
Monday's was located 9.9 miles NNW of South Lake Tahoe, 6.8 miles ESE of Tahoe City.
Boys and Girls Club receives donation for new building from Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/17/2021 - 9:02amThe Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra has donated $1000 from their Meat Raffle fundraiser to the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe's (BGCLT) "Building Bright Futures” project.
Unable to have its usual in-person fundraiser, the Kiwanis Club teamed up with Overland Meat & Seafood Co. during the pandemic and raffled off a Family Pack of meat and seafood. Proceeds from the raffle went to the building fund.

This week's forecast may cause one to look at the calendar but long-time residents of the Sierra know that winter tries to sneak back in before great summer. A few storms may linger in the High Sierra on Monday, otherwise warmer and drier conditions will be in place to start the week. They won't last long though as more active weather with breezy winds and chances for precipitation (even snow) can be expected later this week with significantly cooler temperatures, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Reno.
Planning Commission approves new boutique lodging property in South Lake Tahoe

A long list of neighbors called into the meeting and wrote letters to share their disapproval of the project which will be called Camp Tallac. It will replace an aging and "dilapidated" 3,300 square foot 16-unit storage business with a compound including a four-unit motel and on-site lodging for a manager.

Two men arrested for allegedly stalking and intimidating officers in Douglas County

On May 13, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) arrested Aaron Rasavage and Justin Hall at the residence of Rasavage, at 5:30 p.m. on the stalking and intimidating a police officer charges.
Rasavage is also a person of interest in an ongoing investigation regarding an incident on May 13 with the Douglas County School District.
Mask mandates still in place in California, but not in Nevada for fully vaccinated people

The shift in guidance was an unexpected and dramatic reversal from the country's top public health agency and caught many by surprise and unprepared.
US50 at Spooner Summit reopened after three-vehicle collision cleared
Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/15/2021 - 1:55pmSix people were transported to area hospitals Saturday afternoon after a three-car collision in the eastbound lanes of US 50 near Spooner Summit on the Carson City side of the highway.
Three vehicles were involved in the collision which occurred at approximately 10:52 a.m. on May 15. One of the cars rolled over.
There were six occupants in the vehicles and they were all sent to the hospital via ground ambulance and air flights. Injuries are not life-threatening at this time, according to Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. John Dodge.

Innovative bubble curtain in place at Elk Point Marina to protect against aquatic weeds

Installed earlier this month, the bubble curtain has perforated air hose lines on the bottom of the channel that create walls of bubbles that help slow plant fragments from entering the treated area. Unlike the bubble curtains in the channels of the Tahoe Keys, this bubble curtain works in reverse, to keep plant fragments out, rather than in.

There is even a chance of snow at upper elevations. Thunderstorms could linger into Monday with a period of breezy conditions possible next week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Reno.

El Dorado County DA and 40 other elected district attorneys challenge release of 76,000 inmates

USFS receives $850K in Great American Outdoors Act funds for improvements at Lake Tahoe

Debuting in 2009, Toyota released the Venza SUV as a link between the RAV4 and Highlander, their compact and mid-size SUVs as a more car-centric offering. It was, in fact, based on the Camry even. After a few years of modest sales success, the mk1 Venza was discontinued after dwindling sales (Mind you, canceling models is a huge rarity in Toyotaland).
South Lake Tahoe man in jail after early morning arrest
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/13/2021 - 11:04amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An early morning execution of a search warrant in South Lake Tahoe Thursday resulted in the arrest of 33-year-old resident, Johnathan Towne. Neighbors in the neighborhood around Church of Latter-Day Saints church near Bijou Elementary were awoken when law enforcement from multiple agencies descended upon a home in the 3400 block of Champlain Drive.
South Lake Tahoe Police Department had its MRAP vehicle in play and law enforcement surrounded the home, according to witnesses.
Barton Health buys old Lakeside Inn to expand medical care in Lake Tahoe

Fire reported in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/12/2021 - 1:45pm3:41 p.m. UPDATE: The vegetation fire has now been contained. Crews are still on-site at this time. It is unknown how this fire started, but an investigation is pending.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Crews from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and surrounding agencies are responding to the area of the Upper Truckee Marsh, the scene of fire currently about one-half acre in size.
The call was received at 2:06 p.m. Firefighters are determining the best way into the marsh with water as it is halfway between any streets.

FCC emergency broadband program to help households starting Wednesday

The Emergency Broadband Benefit is an FCC program to help families and households struggling to afford internet service during the COVID-19 pandemic. This new benefit will connect eligible households to jobs, critical healthcare services, virtual classrooms, and so much more.
Charter Communications, a supplier of internet services to South Lake Tahoe residents and millions of others in the 41 states it operates in, announced its participation in the program.
New South Lake Tahoe assistant city manager to start June 1

In this new role, Baker will lead public communications and intergovernmental relations and will advance projects and goals identified in the City Council’s Strategic Plan. In addition, she will be responsible for establishing strategic partnerships for the deployment of mobility solutions to enhance regional transportation connectivity, air quality, and economic development.
Tahoe Tessie's Beach Bites opening at Lakeview Commons

The seasonal concession at Lakeview Commons at El Dorado Beach is scheduled to open on Thursday, May 13.
