SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Council unanimously approved the formation of a new five-member Police Advisory Commission for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) during its meeting Tuesday evening.

STATELINE, Nev. - There will be no fireworks celebrations at Lake Tahoe this 4th of July. The Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority announced Wednesday they will be canceling the 2021 Fourth of July “Lights on the Lake” fireworks display following months of careful discussion and consultation with area partners.

This follows the decisions by organizers of North Lake Tahoe and Incline Village fireworks shows to not hold them this year.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During its Tuesday evening meeting, the South Lake Tahoe City Council voted to give the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe $200,000 for its building fund. The monies come from the allocation of the available balance in the Cannabis Program fund which at the is time is about $660,000.

The agenda item was for a $100,000 disbursement, but the discussion moved to a higher amount after a community member suggested it since the fund has it available and will only grow in the future.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responds to calls throughout the county. The following are calls that only pertain to the South and West Shore, including Meyers, South Lake Tahoe, Meeks Bay, Tahoma, and the Echo Summit area. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care is asked often, "What do you need?" They are taking care of those requests with their first "Reverse Garage Sale" from May 20 - May 24.

Here is how it works:

Drop the items off during the Reverse Garage Sale at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, 1551 Al Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe.

Through a partnership with the Tahoe Prosperity Center, the City of South Lake Tahoe, and Dorado County, 87,000 masks and 2,400 bottles of hand sanitizer have been distributed to local businesses to date.

With the upcoming Memorial Day holiday and a busy tourist season, more supplies may be needed and are now available.

The supplies are thanks to a state grant from the California Office of Emergency Services.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City Council will hold another night meeting on Tuesday, May 18 in order to involve more members of the public. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. and will be held remotely. Instructions on how to participate are at the end of this story.

3:30 PM UPDATE: The USGS has updated the 12:24 p.m. update to 3.4, the same magnitude earlier documented by the UNR Seismological Lab. It was followed at 12:49 p.m. by a 2.8 magnitude in the same area.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Another earthquake centered in the middle of Lake Tahoe did not go unnoticed Monday. The 3.6 magnitude earthquake is in the same region as the recent seismic activity.

Monday's was located 9.9 miles NNW of South Lake Tahoe, 6.8 miles ESE of Tahoe City.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The scenario: a wildfire is in the Tahoe Basin and Barton Memorial Hospital needs to evacuate. A wildfire can spread quickly, leaving residents little time to spare in evacuating safely, but what happens with a hospital full of patients and staff?

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Planning Commission on Thursday narrowly passed the special use permit and design review for a tourist accommodation project for 839 Tallac Avenue.

A long list of neighbors called into the meeting and wrote letters to share their disapproval of the project which will be called Camp Tallac. It will replace an aging and "dilapidated" 3,300 square foot 16-unit storage business with a compound including a four-unit motel and on-site lodging for a manager.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As evidenced by photos on social media, the Lake Tahoe Basin's black bears have emerged from their winter slow-down and slumber. As the bears return, so has the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) as they use a new tool to help manage the human-bear conflict: Trap-Tag-Haze.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Two men have been arrested on suspicion of stalking and intimidating a police officer, and more charges may be filed.

On May 13, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) arrested Aaron Rasavage and Justin Hall at the residence of Rasavage, at 5:30 p.m. on the stalking and intimidating a police officer charges.

Rasavage is also a person of interest in an ongoing investigation regarding an incident on May 13 with the Douglas County School District.

Six people were transported to area hospitals Saturday afternoon after a three-car collision in the eastbound lanes of US 50 near Spooner Summit on the Carson City side of the highway.

Three vehicles were involved in the collision which occurred at approximately 10:52 a.m. on May 15. One of the cars rolled over.

There were six occupants in the vehicles and they were all sent to the hospital via ground ambulance and air flights. Injuries are not life-threatening at this time, according to Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. John Dodge.

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - A new, innovative bubble curtain has been installed across the Elk Point Marina entrance to lessen the possibility of another weed infestation.

Installed earlier this month, the bubble curtain has perforated air hose lines on the bottom of the channel that create walls of bubbles that help slow plant fragments from entering the treated area. Unlike the bubble curtains in the channels of the Tahoe Keys, this bubble curtain works in reverse, to keep plant fragments out, rather than in.

Although Lake Tahoe’s economy has facets—like building trades, health care, education, and a growing number of gig and remote workers, to name a few—the foundation of our region’s $5 billion economy is undeniably tourism. Equally apparent is that visitation is impacting Tahoe’s environment and our communities. To put it plainly, amazing places like this can be “loved to death.” After COVID significantly boosted participation in outdoor recreation last year, national surveys show that more than 60 percent of new participants say they expect to continue their outdoor activities post-pandemic.

One in five adolescents has had a serious mental health disorder, most commonly depression, anxiety disorders, and/or a substance use disorder. As the COVID-19 pandemic improves and life begins to get back to normal, many of our youth are having a difficult time coping with anxiety and the stress of returning to school. The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has received $850,000 from the first round of funding from the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) to work on five local projects. All of the planned projects will improve the visitor experience by reducing deferred maintenance and enhancing recreational infrastructure.

Do you remember the Toyota Venza? No? Neither do most. Debuting in 2009, Toyota released the Venza SUV as a link between the RAV4 and Highlander, their compact and mid-size SUVs as a more car-centric offering. It was, in fact, based on the Camry even. After a few years of modest sales success, the mk1 Venza was discontinued after dwindling sales (Mind you, canceling models is a huge rarity in Toyotaland).

STATELINE, Nev. - When the Lakeside Inn announced its permanent closure in April 2020, speculation has been circulating about what would be built on the property. That speculation can now end as Barton Health has announced it has purchased the property. They closed escrow on Friday.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - It's official! The American Century Championship is returning to Edgewood Tahoe for the 32nd year and the list of golfers hitting the links includes fan favorites Justin Timberlake, Tony Romo, Aaron Rogers, Patrick Mahomes, Drew Brees, and Charles Barkley.

Sports and entertainment superstars will take center stage July 7-11 at Edgewood Tahoe. After not being allowed on the course in 2020, fans are able to return this year. They always play a major role in the production from the beach to the greens.

The Lake Tahoe Mindfulness Community is hosting another "huge yard sale" Saturday, May 29 from 8:00 a.m - 2:00 p.m. It will be taking place at 2045 Arrowhead Avenue in Meyers, near Tahoe Paradise Park. There will be treasures from multiple families.

Proceeds will be donated within the local community.

3:41 p.m. UPDATE: The vegetation fire has now been contained. Crews are still on-site at this time. It is unknown how this fire started, but an investigation is pending.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Crews from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and surrounding agencies are responding to the area of the Upper Truckee Marsh, the scene of fire currently about one-half acre in size.

The call was received at 2:06 p.m. Firefighters are determining the best way into the marsh with water as it is halfway between any streets.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rolled out the $3.2 billion Emergency Broadband Benefit Program Wednesday. The Emergency Broadband Benefit is an FCC program to help families and households struggling to afford internet service during the COVID-19 pandemic. This new benefit will connect eligible households to jobs, critical healthcare services, virtual classrooms, and so much more.

Charter Communications, a supplier of internet services to South Lake Tahoe residents and millions of others in the 41 states it operates in, announced its participation in the program.
