El Dorado County Planning Commission to hear appeal on Meyers cannabis business

City of South Lake Tahoe to vaccine 1500 residents in two-day clinic

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe is hosting its second two-day vaccination clinic at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center. People with appointments drove through on Sunday, April 18 and the next group is going through on the 19th. In total, 1,500 members of the community will receive a vaccine during the clinic.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dry and warm spring conditions continue into Monday as high pressure moves east. A low pressure system will then drop into the area Tuesday and Wednesday with cooler temperatures, increased winds and chances for showers and upper elevation snow (yes, that word again). A few thunderstorms are also possible according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Drier and warmer conditions return later in the week with wetter conditions possible late next weekend.

Friends of the Library temporarily suspends donations of books

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - While the South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library appreciate book donations from the community they cannot accept them at this time. The group of volunteers is unable to process and store books as spaces used for storage and offices undergo mitigation.

The public spaces in the library are open and well ventilated and all services are available, but please do not bring in book donations as staff cannot accept them. Enjoy browsing their excellent collection and be especially kind to their talented and hard-working staff whose work space has been relocated.

Free community firewood permits available from California Tahoe Conservancy

The California Tahoe Conservancy is currently offering free firewood-gathering permits through its Community Firewood Program. Cut wood is available at many different locations where trees have been cut on its properties to reduce fire risk and improve forest health.

Currently there are sites in Meyers are South Lake Tahoe.

Fuelwood is collected on a first come first serve basis. Once a permit is issued there is no guarantee that fuelwood remains on the sites listed on the map. The map is updated all season long with new locations.

Azul Latin Kitchen raises $11,000 for Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even during a pandemic, Azul Latin Kitchen in South Lake Tahoe was able to continue its annual fundraising efforts for local nonprofits. In 2020, the popular restaurant in the Heavenly Village raised $11,000 for Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care.

Typically Azul hosts a fall fundraising party at the restaurant in December but with COVID 19 the annual event was canceled. The donation was largely in part to donations made from patrons who dined at the restaurant, and a partnership with Tahoe Blue Vodka.

Douglas County Commissioners approve reopening plan

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - They don't agree with Gov. Sisolak's handling of the pandemic, nor rules about masks and businesses, but the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners approved a COVID-19 reopening plan during their meeting April 15, 2021.

Roadwork scheduled around Lake Tahoe for week of 4/18 - 4/24/21

Several different agencies have roadwork projects around the Lake Tahoe Basin from spring to fall. Each week we publish projects planned by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the County of El Dorado and the City of South Lake Tahoe. Until May, road work in the Lake Tahoe area will be limited.

Gov. Newsom signs SB-85 which provides $536 million for wildfire and forest resiliency

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday signed into law SB 85, a $536 million wildfire and forest resiliency budget package in hopes of helping California prepare for another dry wildfire season from the southern to northern reaches of the state. It will help fund fire resilience efforts including fuel breaks, forest health projects, and home hardening across the state. Some of those funds will be headed to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra.

Reno man arrested after alleged sex crimes against a child in South Lake Tahoe

A Reno man has been arrested by the Washoe County Regional Crime Suppression Unit on a felony fugitive warrant out of El Dorado County for an alleged crime that took place in South Lake Tahoe several years ago.

Rex Escolano Bernat, 42-years-old, was arrested April 15, 2021. He faces a charge of Lewd and Lascivious Acts with a Child Under 14.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Detectives are seeking information from the public after Bernat's arrest in case there are other victims in the Reno area.

Conservancy set to demolish old South Lake Tahoe building and restore the land

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy will be demolishing the old Tahoe Urgent Care building at the corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and 4th Street once acquisition of the property is complete. The .48-acre parcel sits on environmentally sensitive land that is subject to frequent flooding.

Once the transaction is complete the demolition and stabilization process will begin. Work will be completed in the 2021 building season.

More openings available at South Lake Tahoe vaccine clinic

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - More appointments have opened up in the City of South Lake Tahoe/El Dorado County vaccination clinic on April 18-19. The Moderna vaccine will be offered.

The clinic will take place at the South Tahoe Recreation Center at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd.

The vaccinations are open for all residents age 18 or older. The state has opened vaccine eligibility for those 16 and older but Moderna has only been approved for adlts.

The month of March seemed to fly by. Many of our participants for this event were also flying by racking up hundreds of minutes of activity. Fundraising underway for Tallac Hotshot battling cancer

Charlie Jones, a captain of the Tallac Hotshots, has been diagnosed with cancer after a tumor was found during his first ever colonoscopy.

As the sole income earner for the family, he spends the majority of each summer and wildfire season away from home and on the fire line. He's the father of two young children and husband to his wife Holly.

New urgent care facility in South Lake Tahoe offers daily services

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dr. Steven Leman, a long-time physician on the South Shore, has opened Quick Care Tahoe to fill a need for immediate, appointment-less care after the closing of Tahoe Urgent Care and retirement of Dr. Henning Mehrens.

Located near the "Y" in South Lake Tahoe, Quick Care Tahoe offers medical access seven days/week from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. without the need for appointments. It is privately owned by Dr. Leman and his partners Sean Bishop and Jonathan Raymond.

South Shore Community Cleanup planned during Earth Week in Tahoe

The 9:00 a.m. to noon event is open to everyone, but to ensure the health and safety of all involved, participation in the cleanup is by RSVP only.

Search and Rescue team from South Lake Tahoe rescues stranded hiker and her dog

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue (SAR) team from South Lake Tahoe responded to a call of a stranded hiker and her dog, Marley. The hiker had become disorientated and lost while hiking out of the Desolation Wilderness. As they attempted to descend the mountain from the Horsetail Falls and Pyramid Creek area they became stranded in steep, rocky terrain according to the sheriff's office.

Both the hiker and Marley had minor injuries from that descent.

Bear cubs Eloise and Lucinda taken to new home in the wild; Six cubs remain at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two of the bears who spent the winter at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) center have left and heading to their new home. There are six cubs left, all waiting for their release dates which are provided by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).

All eight cubs have undergone amazing transformations since first arriving, some almost one year ago. They all arrived under different circumstances - burns, injuries, or they were separated from their mothers at a very young age.

Over $175,000 distributed to 28 groups through El Dorado Community Foundation grants

The El Dorado Community Foundation has announced the 2021 Endow El Dorado grant recipients. Due to the unique circumstances surrounding the pandemic, the decision was made to allocate some of the grant funding to pandemic response in addition to the usual categories Social Services, Community Mental health, & Youth. In total, a little over $175,000 is being distributed to 28 different organizations throughout El Dorado County.

Governor Sisolak clearing the way for Nevada to reopen 100% by June 1

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak announced Tuesday his goal to have all Nevada counties open to 100 percent capacity by June 1.

In an effort to help meet that goal, the Governor also announced that the statewide social distancing mandate will be removed on May 1 and that decisions on social distancing will transition to local authority in accordance with the Roadmap to Recovery timeline that was previously announced.

Pause on Janssen Johnson & Johnson vaccine at area vaccine clinics

Based on the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the El Dorado County Office of Emergency Services has announced the temporary suspension of the Janssen Johnson and Johnson (J%J) vaccine.

Among more than 6.8 million doses administered nationwide, six cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot have been reported, with symptoms occurring between 6 and 13 days after receiving the vaccine.

Earth Day celebration all week at Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Fifty-one years ago, the first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, having reverberated from a lone Wisconsin senator’s call to action. That initial celebration led to national legislation such as the Clean Water Act and strengthened the Clean Air Act, which continue to protect our natural resources.

South Lake Tahoe students honored by Daughters of American Revolution

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two high school seniors were honored by the South Lake Tahoe Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) during a ceremony on Monday.

Friends and family gathered at Champions Plaza in South Lake Tahoe to watch Sierrah Meek and Kaitlyn Ponce receive the DAR Citizenship Award. The young women were selected for their leadership, dependability, loyalty and service.

LTUSD prepares to expand school day for students

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will start having a longer school day starting April 26, 2021.

The students will return from Spring Break on April 19, then start attending school for full days April 26.

Grades TK-5 will continue attending class in person on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday but their day at school will be longer.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe, in partnership with El Dorado County, will be hosting a two-day drive-thru COVID-19 vaccine clinic April 18 and 19, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The clinic will take place at the South Tahoe Recreation Center at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd.

Appointments are required for all vaccines.

Since after the vaccine requirement change on April 15, the vaccinations are open for all residents, age 16 and above.

Eleanor “Loni” Esther Cosmos ~ September 27, 1937 – April 1, 2021

Eleanor “Loni” Esther Cosmos of South Lake Tahoe died on Thursday April 1, 2021 after a year and a half quarantine from a staph infection, compounded with a heart condition. She is survived by her sons, Louis and Joseph Cosmos, her sister Graciela Fleming brother-in-law George Fleming, and sister-in-law Angie Silva, as well as dozens of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, Milton Cosmos, brothers Manuel Silva, Armando Silva, Carlos Silva, Joe Guerra, and sisters Madeline “Nena” Garcia and Maria “Stella” Serrano.
