SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a big weekend of baseball in South Lake Tahoe with the Babe Ruth league championship games. In a thrilling final matchup on Sunday, the Yankees beat the Cubs, 10-7. The Cubs couldn't overcome an early deficit, secured by the Yankees taking the lead with a well-executed double by Ryland Wright in the second inning.

Although the Cubs fell short in the end, they put up a valiant effort, collecting four hits in a game dominated by offense. The Yankees managed to rack up an impressive total of 11 hits on their way to triumph.

NDOT plans temporary change on one-mile stretch of US50 at Lake Tahoe from five lanes to three

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is proposing to temporarily restripe a one-mile section of US50 on Tahoe’s East Shore to reconfigure the highway from two lanes to one lane in each direction, with a middle turn lane. Highway officials say this is a limited test project aimed at enhancing transportation safety and access on the corridor.

On June 21, Melissa Chandler, the leader of the NDOT Corridor Planning & Special Studies Program, emailed Douglas County commissioners according to Commissioner Danny Tarkanian.

Understory burn to start near South Lake Tahoe - fire information booth onsite

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) is scheduled to continue prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe. Conditions and weather permitting, the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is planning to conduct an understory burn on 13 acres near the east side of Pioneer Trail between Jicarilla Drive and Golden Bear Trail on Wednesday, June 28, 2023. Forest Service fire prevention staff and partners will be onsite answering questions on Wednesday from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Pioneer Trail across from Jicarilla Drive.

Placerville man sentenced to 15 months in prison for possessing 27 dogs for fighting

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Carlos Villasenor, 40, of Placerville, was sentenced Monday to 15 months in prison for possession of dogs for use in an animal fighting venture, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced. Villasenor was also ordered to pay a $5,500 fine and a $2,700 special assessment.

NV Energy to resume Reliability Improvement Project at Spooner Summit

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - NV Energy will resume work on its Carson City to Glenbrook Transmission Line Rebuild Project on Monday, June 16 in the Glenbrook and Spooner Summit area.

During construction, the public may experience traffic delays primarily within the Spooner Summit area of US50 and just south of the SR28 interchange. The Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT), Spooner Summit Trailhead, and Spooner Summit South Day Use Area will remain open for public use.

Man found deceased in Incline Village

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) is investigating the death of a man in Incline Village, Nev. On June 23, 2023, at approximately 11:28 p.m., WCSO deputies responded to the area of Jeffrey Street and Hazel Court for a report of an unresponsive person.

Upon arrival, first responders found a deceased male at the residence.

Detectives are investigating this as an "isolated incident and there is no outstanding threat to the public."

Lightning caused fire contained at Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The U.S. Forest Service responded to a small wildfire on the east shore of Lake Tahoe on Friday afternoon. The fire was in an area south of US50 called Montreal Canyon and was named the Genoa Fire.

The Genoa Fire was reported at 3:26 p.m. and was approximately 1/2 acre at 4 p.m. A helicopter provided by Bridgeport Helitack made bucket drops as fire engines headed to the area.

As of 7 p.m., a fuel break is around the fire and it is contained. Crews will remain on the scene overnight to watch the area.

Summer fire restrictions in place around Lake Tahoe starting June 26

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - On June 26, 2023, CalFIRE NEU (Nevada, Yuba, and Placer counties) and CalFIRE AEU (Alpine, Amador, El Dorado, Eastern Sacramento, and North-Eastern San Joaquin Counties) are suspending burn permits for the season.

This notice normally triggers all local jurisdictions around Lake Tahoe to activate their own restrictions, and it did.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A 37-year-old man from Cameron Park, Kevin Van Streefkerk, has been arrested by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) after an investigation by detectives into the death of the man's 5 1/2-week-old infant.

According to EDSO reports, detectives were called to investigate a report of physical abuse against an infant. As a result of the abuse, the infant sustained numerous injuries and was taken to a hospital in critical condition on Saturday. Sadly, the infant succumbed to the trauma and passed away while in the hospital on June 18, 2023.

City awards over $400k in cannabis revenue grants to South Lake Tahoe nonprofits

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their meeting Tuesday, the South Lake Tahoe City Council voted on the applicants for the next round of cannabis revenues grants. In 2022, $399,650 was given to 14 local nonprofits and agencies, and for 2023, 15 have been chosen to receive $408,625.

The grants provide funding opportunities to the local public agencies and nonprofit organizations with programs or projects designed to mitigate potential negative impacts of the cannabis industry in South Lake Tahoe and promote the priorities of the City Strategic Plan.

South Lake Tahoe Shootout brings teams from California, Utah, and Nevada

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Action gets started on the basketball courts at South Tahoe High School (STHS) on Thursday, with ten teams from three states meeting for the four-day South Lake Tahoe Shootout.

On Thursday, in the school's Blue Gym, Highland 1 and 2, Woodcreek, Stagg, and Skyline 1 and 2 are meeting up starting at 4 p.m.

Friday's action is in both the Blue Gym and Gold Gym from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The South Lake Tahoe teams start action Friday with the first shootout.

500 acre prescribed burn planned in Tahoe National Forest

Tahoe National Forest, in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy, plans to prescribed burn up to 500 acres near French Meadows Reservoir, approximately 36 miles northeast of Foresthill, west of Lake Tahoe. Dependent on environmental conditions, the burn is planned to start June 21 and may last up to two weeks.

After ignitions, Tahoe National Forest fire staff will patrol and monitor the area 24 hours a day until the fire is determined out.

South Tahoe High Volleyball Team to hold 2-day Super Spikers skills clinic

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A two-day Super Spikers Volleyball Skills Clinic will be held August 10-11, 2023. Instruction will be given by South Tahoe High School (STHS) players and coaches and the clinic is open to all levels, both boys and girls, ages 8-13.

The clinic is being held as a fundraiser for the STHS team. The cost for both days is $100 per player.

The clinic is being held in the STHS Blue and Gold gyms from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. each day, with a scrimmage from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Bob “Mendi” Mendizabal; son, Greg (Jenny) and granddaughters Kira and Alexa, of Kenmore, Wash.; daughter Anisa (Karen) of Trumansburg, NY; brother William “Bud” (Susan) of Boise, Idaho; numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces/nephews. She was predeceased by her mother Jean and her father Edward Wilkes.

CalFIRE responds to small vegetation fire at Vikingsholm

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There was a quick response Tuesday to a reported vegetation fire at Vikingsholm on SR89 north of South Lake Tahoe. An emergency call was received at 1:41 p.m. for a "small vegetation fire."

Upon arrival, fire teams were able to extinguish the 2 ft x 2 ft fire.

CalFIRE responded since it is on California State Parks land. With the winds at Lake Tahoe Tuesday, any small fire is a threat so caution is urged.

The cause of the fire at this time is undetermined.

One person air lifted to hospital after crashing vehicle in front of Harveys Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - One person was critically injured Monday morning after the vehicle they were driving left the roadway in front of Harveys Lake Tahoe crashing into the fence along US50.

At 10:25 a.m. on June 19, a red Kia Forte departed its westbound travel lane on US50, crashing into the fence line in front of the casino, and sticking it twice before returning to the roadway where it struck a vehicle stopped at the red light, causing that vehicle to then strike the car in front of it.
