Guild Mortgage's South Lake Tahoe office contributes $10,000 to Caldor relief fund

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Community Disaster Resource Center (CDRC) got a big burst of funds Thursday with a $10,000 donation from Guild Mortgage of South Lake Tahoe.

CDRC was formed during the Angora Fire to help those who had lost their homes, and now they've come back together again to help those whose wages were impacted due to evacuation from the Caldor Fire.

WWII Veteran Garfield Ware to be honored in South Lake Tahoe ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - World War II Veteran Garfield Ware will be honored for his service on Wednesday, October 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Revive Coffee & Wine on Harrison Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

The 98-year-old Ware was with the U.S. Navy and is a Pearl Harbor survivor.

Vandalized pine trees at South Lake Tahoe's Regan Beach removed, new trees being planted

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Nine Jeffrey Pine trees were vandalized two years ago at Regan Beach in South Lake Tahoe, and despite efforts to save the trees they had to be cut down this week.

The 20-year-old trees were attacked by an unknown person(s) in November of 2019, each ending up with a wide swaths of chopping marks on their trunks and holes bored into the bases with poison added.

El Dorado County to prioritize COVID-19 clinics due to low rates of vaccination

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Public Health Division is prioritizing its public health clinics for those who still need their first and second dose of the vaccine.

According to the County's daily COVID-19 dashboard, only 53.1 percent of eligible residents are fully vaccinated, 59.1 percent have received their first dose.

Councilman Bass wraps up six-year-long legal battle with plea deal

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since June 2015, Cody Bass and his attorney have been in court fighting a legal battle that started when multiple agencies served a search warrant on both the Tahoe Wellness Cooperative (the name of the Tahoe Wellness Center at the time) and owner Bass's South Lake Tahoe home. Agencies were also at Bass's property in Mendocino to conduct a search at the same time.

There will be pumpkins of all sizes to choose from. They are $5 each while supplies last. Kids are also invited to get their picture taken with the Giant Pumpkin during the Pumpkin Patch hours.

Desolation Hotel's Spookytacular Tahoe Halloween Event will benefit the Wildland Firefighter Foundation and El Dorado Community Foundation's Caldor Fire Fund. The charity event is a family-friendly Halloween festival with trick-or-treating, carnival games, raffles, haunted house, music, food and drinks. Costumes are optional but encouraged.

The Tahoe Fund is installing the new donor wall on the Tahoe East Shore Trail soon, and for those who want to secure a spot on the new section of this wall, the deadline is Friday, October 15.

All donations of $100 or more will be recognized on the Donor Wall.

WordWave returns to the Valhalla Boathouse with three one-act plays

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - WordWave returns to the Valhalla Boathouse this month and will feature the three winners of the annual one-act play writing competition.

On October 22 and 23, the public can watch the three winning plays on the stage, than after the performance the play writers will be in attendance to answer questions about their plays and the process they use. Show time each night is 7:30 p.m.

Sugar Bowl and Royal Gorge unveil plans for the 2021-22 season including reopening of The Hotel

Sugar Bowl Resort and Royal Gorge Cross Country have announced the plans for the upcoming season, including mandatory vaccinations for all staff. Advance purchase will be required again this season for all visiting guests.

The resort also has plans to reopen The Hotel at Sugar Bowl and all lodges, bars and restaurants at both resorts.

Sugar Bowl will also resume selling season passes later this week, allowing skiers and snowboarders the opportunity to purchase a pass for the first time since the resort paused sales in April.

Caldor Fire now 93% contained, full containment expected mid-month

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - It has been 51 days since the Caldor Fire began four miles south of the Grizzly Flats community. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The fire is currently 221,775 acres and is 93 percent contained. Fire officials expect full containment by October 16.

There are 1,336 personnel and nine helicopters still assigned to the incident.

Celebration of Life for Wiley Tipton

There will be a Celebration of Life for Wiley Tipton on October 10, 2021. Wiley was born on February 5, 1950 and passed away in his sleep on October 13, 2020.

He had been suffering complications from a recent stroke.

Chance of rain and upper elevation snow this week: Snow at lake level the following week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Warm and dry conditions continue into the start of the week with a slight uptick in winds starting Monday. A weather pattern change then appears likely midweek onward with some afternoon breezes,
increased clouds, and a cooling trend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Precipitation chances may also return later in the week into next weekend.

There are enhanced fire weather concerns Monday and Tuesday, however, widespread critical conditions are not expected.

Caldor Fire is 50 days old; 91% contained, 221,775 acres

After 50 days, the Caldor Fire continues to to burn in El Dorado and Alpine Counties. It is currently measured at 221,775 acres and is 91 percent contained.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 782 structures have been
destroyed, 35 structures are threatened, and 81 structures have been damaged. There are 1,438 personnel and 8 helicopters assigned to the incident. Full containment is expected for October 16, 2021.

Rare dragonfly discovered in Truckee, 107 years after last local sighting

The scientific community around Lake Tahoe is buzzing after an amazing discovery by the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS). The non-profit organization was hosting a citizen science event in the Donner Lake area when participants discovered a Spiny Baskettail (Epitheca spinigera) dragonfly. The species was first discovered in the region over 100 years ago but had not been seen here since.

Christmas Valley Pumpkin Patch to raise funds for those who lost homes in Caldor and Tamarack Fires

The Celio Family is opening their historic ranch for the Christmas Valley Pumpkin Patch on October 16 and 17 to raise funds for families who lost their homes in the Caldor and Tamarack Fires.

Flames came near the ranch, but it was saved and now the Celios are inviting the community out for two days of fun and "fun"raising from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day.

There will be a pumpkin patch, corn stock maze, petting zoo, arts and crafts, raffle, live music, food and more with all proceeds going to the Community Disaster Resource Center - Lake Tahoe, a 501(c)3.

Food and Drug Administration authorizes booster dose of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for some groups

On September 22, 2021, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) amended the emergency use authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech’s two-dose COVID-19 to allow for use of a single booster dose, to be administered no sooner than six months following the initial two-dose series. This was then confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on September 24, 2021.

National Coffee With A Cop Day at Cuppa Tahoe October 6

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Wednesday, October 6, 2021, members of the California Highway Patrol South Lake Tahoe office, South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Sheriff, and community members will come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, have coffee, and build relationships.

Suicide is a leading cause of death, and it is reponsible for one death every 11 minutes in the U.S. Though widespread, suicide is preventable, and individually we can prepare ourselves to help support those who may be at risk.

Know the signs.

Southwest Gas is seeing an increase in damage to its lines, reminds residents to call before they dig

Southwest Gas has seen an increase in damage to natural gas pipelines over the past couple of weeks because residents in the area are doing digging projects without first calling 811. The nice weather is enticing people to finish those projects before it gets too cold and they may not think about the significance of what can happen if they hit an underground utility line.

Fall Fish Fest canceled due to low water in Taylor Creek, but area still open to public

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One of the more popular things to do in South Lake Tahoe as the seasons change is to attend the Fall Fish Fest at Taylor Creek, but that won't be the case in 2021.

Due to the ongoing drought conditions and low water levels at Fallen Leaf Lake, the flow into Taylor Creek is running low. The U.S. Forest Service expects the Kokanee salmon will not spawn in the creek due to the low levels. In the past when this happens, the Kokanee have moved on to other creeks to swim up and spawn in, then return to Taylor Creek if conditions allow the following year.

One arrested after pursuit in South Lake Tahoe; One officer and a driver transported to hospital

UPDATE 10:00PM: The family of the two people in the blue Explorer that ended on its roof are expressing their gratitude to the members of the public who helped them out of the vehicle.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A pursuit of a suspected stolen Mazda CX9 Friday led to one South Lake Tahoe man being arrested. At the same time a crash near the pursuit led to two people being transported to Barton Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

This is breaking news and not all information from law enforcement is available at this time.

Caldor Fire now 91% contained; No change in size Thursday

The Caldor Fire did not gain any size on Thursday and remains at 221,775 acres burned. Firefighters did gain on containment which is now 91 percent.

1,467 personnel remain working the fire.

Overall a relatively quiet day across the fire. On the west side in Divisions G through W, there were a number of small heat signatures well inside the perimeter, particularly around the Division A/W break. Fire lines along this perimeter are holding well with no issues.

Douglas County honors four businesses with Spotlight Award for service during pandemic

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Four businesses were recognized in Douglas County today for their community spirit and extra efforts during the pandemic.

This was the eighth year businesses were awarded with Spotlight Awards. Instead of the normal seven industry categories, this year businesses were honored for doing "something outstanding" during COVID-19.

1,800 pets evacuated by El Dorado County Animal Services, over 200 in South Lake Tahoe/Meyers

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - How do you move and care for 58 dogs, 127 cats, five rabbits, 27 birds, two turtles and four fish as flames are bearing down on a community that is evacuating? With a lot of planning, helpers and dedication.

As life for humans from the south shore community was disrupted and thrown into a mode of panic due to the Caldor Fire, those with animals were faced with even more complication - where do I go that will accept animals, or even how do I transport loved creatures in tanks and cages?

Inaugural Taste of Alpine offers a culinary adventure

MARKLEEVILLE, Calif. — Most people travel to Hope Valley and Alpine County for a visual treat each fall, and now a new week-long event will offer a culinary treat for the taste buds.

The Alpine County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with area businesses, is offering a new type of visitor adventure - Taste of Alpine. The week-long event is an opportunity for customers to visit communities throughout the county and take in all that the local restaurants have to offer, from full-course dining to appetizers and drink specials.

New Eldorado National Forest orders open some areas outside of Caldor Fire footprint

Even though the Caldor Fire is still burning, the emergency forest-wide closure order issued in August will be terminated and replaced with three new ones starting September 20, 2021.

The Caldor Fire Closure, Forest Order 03-21-18, will be in effect until March 31, 2022. It could be lifted sooner or modified if conditions warrant.

Caldor Fire now 83% contained

Weather conditions have been favorable for firefighters, allowing them to get a containment line around 83 percent of the Caldor Fire. It is 221,775 acres in size. High pressure moved over the fire area which helped reduce winds but did bring in higher temperatures during the day.

"This fire is still a sleeping giant," said Mike Wakoski, the new incident commander assigned to the Caldor Fire. "This is a big fire."

The Caldor Fire is the 15th largest in California history and almost 350 square miles.

South Tahoe High Homecoming Parade on Friday: Local Heroes/Superheroes
