SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's here! On Saturday, June 10, Clean Tahoe is holding its annual $5 Community Cleanup Day, fondly known as Dump Day. Get rid of the items you've had in the grade or house, waiting to be taken to the dump. It is held at the South Tahoe Refuse Transfer Station.

New this year is a service for senior citizens only. Help is available for seniors that have a hard time transporting and disposing of furniture or other bulk items. Seniors need to call 530-544-4210 to make an appointment to get items picked up.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Learning Haven (TLH), a new South Shore nonprofit, is hosting a free educational forum every second Wednesday of the month for interested community members. The inaugural event last month was a big hit when over 130 students and 20 businesses came together at a student job fair.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first sign that a new water project was coming to South Lake Tahoe was the old post office at the corner of Pioneer Trail and Black Bart Avenue being fenced in and filling up with blue pipes and other supplies.

The corner is the staging area for the new South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) Black Bart Waterline Replacement Project being done by Vinciguerre Construction.

Crews started this week prepping the work area by cutting into the pavement on streets within the boundary area.

The contractor will be working on the project until October.

The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) collaborated with the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office in a recent undercover operation targeting unlicensed contractors. The operation, conducted in late May in the Lake Tahoe area, resulted in seven unlicensed persons receiving a Notice to Appear in criminal court for allegedly acting in the capacity of a contractor without the required license. These suspects now face legal consequences, including fines and potential imprisonment.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A job working with race cars and trucks on the track is not a traditional career path for a woman, but Elizabeth "Liz" Prestella has been making a name for herself in racing.

The 2007 South Tahoe High School (STHS) graduate currently lives in Mooresville, NC, and has the job title of "Part assistant/ tear down mechanic/ at track tire specialist." Liz says she is like "a utility knife for my team they can put me wherever is needed."

RENO, Nev. - South Lake Tahoe native, and South Tahoe High School grad, Rowena Piñero, is being celebrated for her mural on the new BlueZone Sports building in mid-town Reno at the Reno Public Market.

Rowena graduated from South Tahoe High in 2014 and Truckee Meadows Community College in 2022 from their design program, and has been working as a full-time designer with Design on Edge in Reno since graduation.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Basecamp Pizza Co., located in the Heavenly Village, recently awarded a check for $20,000 to the Tahoe Area Mountain Bike Association (TAMBA) leaders.

The Forest Health Community Working Group invites the public to discuss their efforts in restoring Alpine County after fire, flood, and mudslides.

The meeting will be held at Turtle Rock Park Community Center in Markleeville on June 27 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Discuss post-fire restorations, restoration timelines, upcoming field trips, updates, as well as question and answer period with project managers.

There will be state and private forestry groups, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Alpine Fire Safe Council present.

The South Lake Tahoe Tourism Improvement District is holding its Board of Directors meeting both in-person and on Zoom on Thursday, June 15 at 1 pm. at the Forest Suites Resort.

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - The Alpine County public health director is urging caution to those who are attending Kids Fishing Day on Saturday, June 10.

Dr. Richard Johnson recommends the following:
- Attend the event with your children
- Leave your dogs at home
- Minimize contact with the water as much as possible
- Since any toxin is stored in the liver of a fish, gut the fish, wash it carefully, and enjoy your meal

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Tahoe Truckee is holding a free vaccine and microchip clinic in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, June 13 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

This free clinic is for pets from Glenbrook to Meyers and is not limited to South Lake Tahoe residents. Bring your dog on a leash and cat in a carrier.

Ancient Forest Society, a South Lake Tahoe-based nonprofit, has announced a new partnership with One Tree Planted. The two organizations are working together to collect giant sequoia seeds throughout their range to preserve this invaluable genetic material for the future.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is preparing for the upcoming Carson Valley Days Celebration June 8-11. This year’s theme is “Aloha, Carson Valley!”

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It has been one year since the community suddenly lost "Miss Marcia," and her spirit, her guidance, and her love are missed every day.

When Marcia Sarosik passed away on June 5, 2022, the whole community was shaken, not just the dancers and their families from her studio, but also teachers, the schools, her neighbors, and all other nonprofits in South Lake Tahoe (and the list goes on). Marcia's husband Dennis and children Lisa and Evan lost their beacon.

With summer arriving in Tahoe, residents and visitors are looking forward to spending time on the Lake’s sparkling blue waters. To protect that treasured experience and the Lake’s water quality, public, private, and nonprofit partners have come together to inform recreators about the threat of aquatic invasive species – harmful, non-native plants and animals. Without a watchful eye and preventative action, invasive species could proliferate, turning those blue waters a murky green.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two brothers who grew up in South Lake Tahoe are bringing an elevated twist on bar cuisine at their new gastropub, The Woods Lake Tahoe.

Dillon and Connor McKeen are putting the finishing touches on the remodel of the old Pick 6 at 3115 Harrison Avenue. This week their chef, Chris Ibarra, unveiled the dishes he created for The Woods, showing them to the new staff. Dish after dish came out of the kitchen Friday, with staff savoring every bite as they heard the chef's story about each one.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The popular Wildlife Wednesdays return this summer at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC)'s South Lake Tahoe facility.

On Wednesday, June 7, Denise Upton, LTWC wildlife education coordinator, will host a 1-hour presentation and Q&A about porcupines, and LTWC ambassador animal, Porky, a North American Porcupine will make a guest appearance.

This all-ages event is free, and donations are appreciated (click here to make a donation; suggested $10 for an individual or $25 for a family).
