State Route 28 project updates for the week in North Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/18/2024 - 8:47pmNORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans is advising motorists of a broadband installation project continuing along State Route 28 (SR-28) along the north shore of Lake Tahoe this week. Delays are expected between Kings Beach and Tahoe City. The Southwest Gas line project has wrapped Up for the 2024 season.
The broadband project is a part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed broadband into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.
Residents asked to be mindful of green-waste combination as Gardnerville begins pilot program with Full-Circle Compost

The green-waste program started in 2000 as a free service to residents as the Town was able to dispose of its green waste at Bently Ranch free of charge. Every ton of green waste—diverted to Bently Ranch and kept out of the landfill—was a cost-saving to Town residents and an environmental benefit for all.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/18/2024 - 3:02pmScott Robbins, Amelia Richmond, and Nick Speal are telling residents that the Measure N Vacancy Tax “Does NOT tax local residents, businesses or renters.” The text of the ballot measure says “Section 3.60.020 Imposition of Tax, A.... the City imposes an annual Residential Vacancy Tax on each person who owns a Residential Unit if that Residential Unit is Vacant”. There is absolutely no exception for “local residents, businesses or renters”. It applies to every residence in the city regardless of who owns
it or where they live.

Wienermobile makes weekend-long stop in South Lake Tahoe

Today's version of the hot dog-shaped vehicle is much bigger than the original 13-foot metal hot dog on wheels.
The little moving hotdog is now a 27-foot-long frankfurter atop a yellow bun. A peek inside shows the six seats in a fun and funky display.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office said the cause and manner of death are pending investigation, though no foul is suspected.

This was the first time members of the Club visited the ranch.
The day brought us beautiful, sunny weather. Club members watched a rodeo, fed carrots to horses and goats, learned how to rope a bull, and enjoyed the arcade inside of the barn.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for the Lake Tahoe Basin and surrounding areas on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno is calling for gusty winds and low humidity.
Winds will be from the south to southwest at 15 to 25 mph with gusts 30 to 40 mph. Humidity will be 9-15 percent.

Female body found on Mt. Rose Highway believed to be that of missing Kings Beach woman

Rose Highway on August 15 as Patricia Portella-Wright, 48, of Kings Beach, Calif. The manner of death was homicide. The Coroner said the cause of death was multiple sharp-force injuries. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the law enforcement investigation.

Kings Beach man arrested as suspect in Reno murder; disappearance of girlfriend

Clifford had been spotted in Portola by investigators and taken into custody with the help of the Plumas County Sheriff's Office and is being held on an active warrant.

Caltrans work in South Lake Tahoe this summer preparing for larger safety project

Work started in June on installing the needed conduit, and the project is scheduled to be completed by October 2025. At various times there will continue to be lane restrictions on US50.

Lahontan Water Board has alleged that Sugar Pine Housing Partners LP and Deacon Construction LLC violated the Construction General Permit as follows:
1. Failed to have a written spill response plan and spill response kit onsite on September 27, 2023.
2. Failed to remove trash and properly secure waste stockpiles on September 27, October 3, and October 17, 2023.

Placer County Sheriff's Office asking for public's help in finding Kings Beach woman

She was reported missing on Friday, August 9, 2024, when she did not show up for work. Her last known contact was on Saturday, August 3.
PCSO believes Patricia may be in the Reno area. She could be in a red, 2003 Chevrolet Blazer with Nevada plate F8942 (handicapped plates). There is a square white sticker just to the right of the rear license plate.

A check was presented to the nonprofit that helps pets in the Lake Tahoe and Truckee area during a party at the restaurant where there was pizza, pasta, a salad buffet, drink specials, live music, and raffle prizes donated from local businesses.
Driver of car believed to have started Gold Ranch Fire arrested
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/12/2024 - 5:13pmThe Nevada Highway Patrol has arrested the driver of a vehicle that was on fire on I-80 near Verdi on Sunday. The vehicle, a 2020 Alfa Romeo, is believed to have started the Gold Ranch Fire which has burned over 500 acres, so far.
The driver, Andrew Nick, was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and booked into the Washoe County jail.
The NHP investigation is open and active.
Carl Hasty announces retirement from Tahoe Transportation District

Hasty has served as the agency for over 15 years. The TTD Board of Directors will begin the process of selecting a successor, with discussions planned for the September board meeting. The District is also actively seeking a Senior Transportation Planner to continue the momentum and advance future projects that build on Hasty’s legacy.

Expect winds from the southwest to west of 20 to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to 35 mph.
No barbecuing or firepits whatsoever are allowed and move anything combustible at least 5 feet away from your home.

Join the Lake Tahoe Historical Society and Tahoe Area Sierra Club on Tuesday, August 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Commons, 1004 Lakeview Avenue, South Lake Tahoe.
Milder, more seasonable temperatures for the week ahead at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/11/2024 - 10:06pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The above-average temperatures the Lake Tahoe area has been experiencing for the last several weeks will be backing off a bit in the following week, with highs in the 70s and overnight lows of 39-42 degrees.
The weekly forecast for South Lake Tahoe from the National Weather Service in Reno:
Monday - Sunny, with a high near 77. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
Monday Night - Mostly clear, with a low of around 40. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
Two fires north of Lake Tahoe keeping firefighters busy
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/11/2024 - 8:34pmMONDAY UPDATE: As of 9 a.m., the fire has burned about 500 acres and is being worked on by 200 personnel from federal, state, and local fire agencies. The fire has been renamed the Gold Ranch Fire. Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District said their focus today is to maintain the progress they have made as winds pick up this afternoon and there is a Red Flag warning for the area. 400 homes are threatened. The goal is to hold fire south of Interstate 80, north of Garson Road. Evacuations remain in effect, and the evacuation map remains the same.
