SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Valley Campground will be hosting the 28th-anniversary celebration of the Valhalla Renaissance Faire on Saturday, August 24 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, August 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be jousting, live entertainment, an artisan marketplace, costume contests, food/drinks, photo opportunities, and more! Lahontan Water Board alleges violations at Sugar Pine Village project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There have been allegations of a violation of the Construction General Permit at the Sugar Pine Village, and a settlement has been proposed that will benefit another South Lake Tahoe project. Lahontan Water Board has alleged that Sugar Pine Housing Partners LP and Deacon Construction LLC violated the Construction General Permit as follows:

1. Failed to have a written spill response plan and spill response kit onsite on September 27, 2023.

2. Failed to remove trash and properly secure waste stockpiles on September 27, October 3, and October 17, 2023.

Placer County Sheriff's Office asking for public's help in finding Kings Beach woman

KINGS BEACH, Calif. - The Placer County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) is asking for the public’s help in locating 48-year-old Patricia Portella-Wright, who lives in Kings Beach.

She was reported missing on Friday, August 9, 2024, when she did not show up for work. Her last known contact was on Saturday, August 3.

PCSO believes Patricia may be in the Reno area. She could be in a red, 2003 Chevrolet Blazer with Nevada plate F8942 (handicapped plates). There is a square white sticker just to the right of the rear license plate.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - When James (Jim) Kazakov left his bartender job at Harvey's Inn to join the new Ridge Tahoe Resort team on August 1, 1984, little did he know what lay before him. He was the first person to serve a drink at the resort’s bar, now called The Bear Trap Lounge & Bar, and continues to serve the guests, owners, and locals who stop by.

Base Camp Pizza Co. raises $17,000 for Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A year-long fundraising campaign by Base Camp Pizza Co. in the Heavenly Village has culminated in $17,000 for the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT).

A check was presented to the nonprofit that helps pets in the Lake Tahoe and Truckee area during a party at the restaurant where there was pizza, pasta, a salad buffet, drink specials, live music, and raffle prizes donated from local businesses.

Driver of car believed to have started Gold Ranch Fire arrested

The Nevada Highway Patrol has arrested the driver of a vehicle that was on fire on I-80 near Verdi on Sunday. The vehicle, a 2020 Alfa Romeo, is believed to have started the Gold Ranch Fire which has burned over 500 acres, so far.

The driver, Andrew Nick, was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and booked into the Washoe County jail.

The NHP investigation is open and active.

Carl Hasty announces retirement from Tahoe Transportation District

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - During its board meeting last Tuesday, Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) District Manager Carl Hasty announced his retirement.

Hasty has served as the agency for over 15 years. The TTD Board of Directors will begin the process of selecting a successor, with discussions planned for the September board meeting. The District is also actively seeking a Senior Transportation Planner to continue the momentum and advance future projects that build on Hasty’s legacy.

Red Flag Warning and Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe and Truckee Monday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Lake Tahoe and Truckee areas. The warning for gusty winds and low humidity is in effect until 8 p.m. Monday.

Expect winds from the southwest to west of 20 to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to 35 mph.

No barbecuing or firepits whatsoever are allowed and move anything combustible at least 5 feet away from your home.

Two fires north of Lake Tahoe keeping firefighters busy

MONDAY UPDATE: As of 9 a.m., the fire has burned about 500 acres and is being worked on by 200 personnel from federal, state, and local fire agencies. The fire has been renamed the Gold Ranch Fire. Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District said their focus today is to maintain the progress they have made as winds pick up this afternoon and there is a Red Flag warning for the area. 400 homes are threatened. The goal is to hold fire south of Interstate 80, north of Garson Road. Evacuations remain in effect, and the evacuation map remains the same.

Extension of filing period for South Lake Tahoe City Council candidates

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The filing period for those interested in running for the two open South Lake Tahoe City Councilmember positions has been extended since the two incumbents are not running for reelection. Those interested have until August 14 at 5 p.m. to file. So far, three people have decided to run and complete the paperwork, Keith Roberts, David Jinkens, and Nick Speal, according to El Dorado County Elections.

Cristi Creegan and John Friedrich did not file to run for a second term.

Crozier Fire at 1,960 acres, 14% contained - community meeting Sunday

UPDATE Sunday 8PM: The fire remains at 1,938 acres with 28 percent containment. Minimal burning activity was observed today, with smoldering trees, downed snags, and pockets of brush continuing to burn within the established perimeter. The large amount of dry fuel remains a significant concern. However, improving weather conditions and a gradual cooling trend are expected to support firefighting efforts as crews continue to mop up and strengthen containment lines.

Major delays expected on SR28 project in North Lake Tahoe

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans is advising motorists of a broadband installation project and gas-line replacement work continuing along State Route 28 (SR-28) along the north shore of Lake Tahoe next week.

The broadband project is part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed broadband into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.

Utility work is scheduled along the shoulders of both directions of SR-28 at the following locations and times:

El Dorado Community Foundation offers financial help to Crozier Fire evacuees

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado Community Foundation (EDCF) has started an emergency response fund for those evacuated from the Crozier Fire. In the event of a community emergency causing mandatory evacuations within El Dorado County, EDCF has been opening applications for possible assistance within 24-72 hours of the onset of mandatory evacuations.

Just as they did during the Caldor Fire, EDCF provides assistance for individuals and families under mandatory evacuation orders. Currently, they are offering $300 gift cards to help evacuees during these tough times.

El Dorado County starts a dedicated Crozier Fire webpage as fire grows to 1960 acres

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The Crozier Fire burning in the steep, rugged terrain northwest of Placerville has grown to 1,960 acres and it remains five percent contained.

The fire continues to burn in areas with receptive and abundant fuels. Crews continue to engage actively in parts of the fire when it is possible to build direct lines, reinforce lines, and mop up. Crews are working around high heat and steep, rocky terrain.

Weather remains hot and dry Friday night and through the weekend with poor overnight relative humidity recoveries.

In Memory: Kaleb Curtzwiler

Kaleb James Martin Curtzwiler died August 9, 2010. He was 28.

Mr. Curtzwiler was born Jan. 27, 1982, at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe. The 2000 South Tahoe High School graduate was an avid soccer player.

Although he did not ski competitively, it was a sport he participated in with his family and one that he excelled at.

Sir Rod Stewart postpones Lake Tahoe concert

STATELINE, Nev. - Sir Rod Stewart canceled his August 9 show at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Lake Tahoe, just a few hours before showtime. On his Instagram account, a statement put to rest rumors that have been circulating since the singer canceled his 200th show in Las Vegas earlier in the week due to strep throat.

According to Instagram, Sir Rod Stewart canceled both his Lake Tahoe show and his August 10 Lincoln, Calif. show due to a "summer strain of COVID-19."

Knight Monsters welcome Brett Boeing as assistant coach

STATELINE, NV – The Tahoe Knight Monsters, proud ECHL Affiliate of the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights and the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights have announced that the team has hired Brett Boeing as assistant coach.

Boeing, 29, joins the Knight Monsters coaching staff from the United States Hockey League’s (USHL) Dubuque Fighting Saints where he served as a Volunteer Assistant Coach. Boeing was a member of a coaching staff that helped guide the Fighting Saints to a President Cup Finals appearance this past season.

Smoke from Crozier Fire makes its way into Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Crozier Fire burning west of Lake Tahoe has grown to 1,582 acres and it remains five percent contained. The smoke from the fire made its way into the Lake Tahoe Basin on Thursday evening, affecting air quality on the east shore, with some poor air quality also seen in other areas of the lake, and into the Carson Valley and Reno.

There are currently 1,309 personnel working on the fire including those on 113 engines, 17 water tenders, 12 helicopters, 31 hand crews, and 13 dozers.

Free chipping services available from Lake Tahoe area fire districts

Defensible space is the barrier that helps slow or halt the progress of fire that would otherwise engulf a property, and Lake Tahoe area fire departments are offering free chipping services to help with that task. Creating and maintaining defensible space is a key concept in wildfire prevention and is important for local fire-adapted communities.

All neighborhoods can take steps toward creating defensible space around their homes by clearing vegetative debris, pine needles, and woody materials.

Carson City School District students required to use cellphone pouches this school year

The Carson City School District has announced a school-based initiative aimed at enhancing the educational environment and minimizing distractions in classrooms. Douglas County Sheriff’s Office joins forces in Pedestrian Safety Campaign

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will be joining forces with participating law enforcement agencies in Nevada for a Joining Forces Pedestrian Safety Campaign. The campaign will take place from August 7-31, 2024.

Nevada had 109 pedestrian fatalities in 2023. This Pedestrian Safety Campaign aims to increase law enforcement participation by coordinating highly visible patrols across the State of Nevada to educate both pedestrians and drivers about road safety.

Wildlife Crossing Project to close U.S. 395 through Sonora Junction for two weeks

U.S. 395 will fully close for 15 days for the Sonora Junction Shoulders Project as crews install two under-highway wildlife crossings, providing safe and sustainable passage for mule deer and other area wildlife.

Beginning Wednesday, September 4, the highway will fully close between Bridgeport and State Route 108.

The project, which began construction in May, is widening the shoulders of the highway to 8 feet, installing rail-element retaining walls, stabilizing slopes with anchored mesh, and installing wildlife crossings.

TRPA seeks public's input on 25-year transportation plan for Lake Tahoe
