Senior legal seminars coming to South Lake Tahoe

The seminar series, entitled "Planning for the Future," provides information about financial and health planning. Individuals may attend the series or just one class. Reservations are not required. Each seminar session is free, although donations are accepted. The seminar sessions will be held as follows:
Mandatory meeting for Fall Fire Academy applicants at LTCC

Students who want to apply for admission to the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy at Lake Tahoe Community College for Fall 2015 must attend a mandatory orientation meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. in the Board/Aspen Room on campus.
Reservations are not required for this meeting, and anyone interested in the program is welcome to attend. Based on student demand, there may be a random lottery for available seats in the Fire Academy. Students will not be eligible for the lottery unless they attend this orientation meeting.
"Super Scooper" based at South Lake Tahoe airport
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/21/2015 - 3:42pmThe final celebrity jets were taking off from South Lake Tahoe Tuesday, just as the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) welcomed in a Bombardier CL415 firefighting aircraft.
Nicknamed "Super Scooper" because it can scoop up 1,600 gallons of water from a lake and drop it on the front lines of a fire.
Marine aircraft training in South Lake Tahoe postponed
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/21/2015 - 3:15pmThe Marine Light Attack Helicopter Training and Open House for the U.S. Marine Corps Squadron 303 has been postponed due to being deployed on a mission. A future date has not been scheduled at this time.
The USMS had previously been scheduled to be in South Lake Tahoe on a thirteen day training mission July 27 – August 8.
New Vacation Home Rental ordinance passes City Council

In a unanimous vote of 4-0 (Councilman Tom Davis had to recuse himself), the City Council voted to implement an ordinance that addresses three key issues:

New campsites, bike path and entrance for Camp Richardson
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/20/2015 - 8:51pmThe U.S. Forest Service will begin the first phase of their retrofitting of the Camp Richardson campground on July 21, something that has been in the planning stages since 2009.
During this first phase, they will remove approximately 250 trees in the campground on the north side of Highway 89. This portion of the project will last about two weeks. Work will be completed on this side of Highway 89 in October.
Phase two on the south side of Highway 89 is anticipated to begin in September 2015 and be finished by June 2016.
Beach Wrestling Championships this weekend in South Lake Tahoe

Beach wrestling has made it to South Lake Tahoe and everyone is invited to participate. Local wrestling coaches Ryan Wallace and Dave Borges are putting on a first for the area, the Inaugural Beach Wrestling Tournament will be held on the El Dorado Beach at Lakeview Commons on Saturday, July 25, 2015.
South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle and the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe are sponsoring the event which gets under way at high noon. Registration and weigh-ins begin at 11 a.m.
Lake Tahoe road work schedule for July 20 - July 25

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.
Wag, Waddle and Walk event tonight
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/20/2015 - 1:56pmDogs on the Run, a South Lake Tahoe non-profit, is hosting their monthly Wag, Waddle and Walk event on Monday, July 20 at 5:30 p.m.
The monthly dog walking activity brings together dog owners for a little exercise, optional competition and socializing. The on-leash walk starts at Al Tahoe Post Office parking lot and finishes at Sierra Pizza on Al Tahoe Blvd.
This family friendly event is for non-aggressive canines and people. Dogs must be on-leash and up-to-date on their vaccinations.

July 24, 2015 - 8:30pm Join the Tahoe Heritage Foundation and the U.S. Forest Service at Lake of the Sky Amphitheater on Friday, July 24 for a fun and educational presentation by NorCal Bats. Learn about these amazing flying mammals and their importance to our ecosystem, such as insect control.
The live lecture is at Taylor Creek Visitor Center's Lake of the Sky Amphitheater at 8:30 p.m. It is open to the public. Cost is a $5 donation which goes to the Tahoe Heritage Foundation.

Justin Timberlake makes the most of his inaugural ACC appearance

The large gallery following him during the practice rounds and tournament was full of girls, teens and moms trying to catch a glimpse of the recording artist.
During Sunday's final round, Timberlake was partnered with NFL great Jerry Rice and Alfonso Ribeiro who is best known for winning Dancing With the Stars and for his role on Fresh Prince on Bel-Air.
Whittell senior wins Gene Upshaw Memorial Scholarhip

Mark Mulder wins American Century Golf Championship
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/19/2015 - 5:58pmMark Mulder had a premonition on Thursday after playing his practice rounds at Edgewood Tahoe. "I'm going to win this," he said. "I was in kind of the groove and knew I had an absolute chance," he said of the American Century Golf Championship.
Too bad his parents didn't take advantage of their son's 8-1 odds to win at the Harvey's Sportsbook. The former Oakland Athletic's pitcher, and current ESPN Baseball Tonight analyst, made the premonition a reality by winning the 26th Annual American Century Golf Championship today with a score of 82.
Firefighters put out suspicious brush fire in Rabe Meadow

Firefighters from Tahoe Douglas Fire Department (TDFD) and the U.S. Forest Service got early control of the fire which was burning in dry brush on Forest Service land just northeast of the bike bath.
The fire is under investigation according to Fire Marshal Eric Guevin. "Anyone with information is to call the Forest Service or TDFD via 911," said Guevin.

There have been several packed council and community meetings on the topic of the proposed updated to the Vacation Home Rental (VHR) ordinance, and Tuesday's meeting should be no different.

This year, Hall of Famer Steve Young and former NFL coach Herman "Herm" Edwards joined the local community group for an hour of honest observations and questions and answers.
"It's fun to be with you," Young told the intimate group of Rotarians and their guests. "I feel comfortable here at home in 49er country. If I ever got into trouble I know you guys could hide me."

One Less Spark Means One Less Wildfire

Locals and visitors alike recreating in many different ways, from camping to mountain biking, to boating, Lake Tahoe has something for everyone. This summer and particularly this summer due to continued drought conditions, it is important to remember just how fragile the Tahoe Basin is, and that there is a persistent threat of wildfire. Everyone needs to take steps to ensure they are being fire smart in everything they do. Doing the right thing, the wrong way can start a wildfire.

Donate blood, help a pet

July 31, 2015 - 12:00pm BloodSource will hold a South Lake Tahoe Community blood drive to meet the community need for blood and blood products on July 31 from 12:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Center Gymnasium at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd.
For every pint of blood donated, BloodSource will donate a pound of pet food to the Lake Tahoe Humane Society.

American Century Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe until 2022

The 2015 tournament was the 26th event to be held at Edgewood Tahoe and was the last year of the current contract.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care breaks ground on new home

Since then, they've treated over 22,000 animals, released over 14,000 rehabilitated animals back into the wild, have a volunteer crew of 2,000 people, and train 50 to 100 new volunteers annually.
Lane closures at bottom of Spooner Summit next week
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/16/2015 - 6:12pmNighttime lane closures will be in place over the coming week on South Carson Street and U.S. 50 near Spooner junction for the Nevada Department of Transportation’s Carson City Freeway project.
Lane closures and reduced speed limits will be in place on both South Carson Street and U.S. 50 in the Spooner junction area beginning Sunday, June 19 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. The closures are anticipated to last for approximately one week.

In the past, Tahoe was known as a place where unproductive interactions between stakeholders led to a stunning decay in our environment and our economic vitality, creating a region that seemed frozen in time.
We face major environmental challenges at Tahoe, including the uncertainties of climate change. And as Albert Einstein said, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”
Identities of those involved in deadly motorcycle crash released

At 8:26 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, a Nissan truck driven by 54-year-old Michael Cearley made a left hand from Lake Tahoe Blvd onto Modesto Avenue, right in the path of a motorcyclist and his passenger who were riding westbound on Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Why you ask?
A fun and rowdy group of friends from Sacramento had taken control of the hole, their antics heard from all ends of the course. (Follow SouthTahoeNow for that story later today)
"I've heard about you guys, you're world famous," said Timberlake.
Area Search and Rescue volunteers help in Shasta County
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/16/2015 - 6:43amAlmost 40 Search and Rescue volunteers from El Dorado County Office of Emergency Services (OES) went to Shasta County over the weekend to help search vast terrain for an abducted 6-month-old baby.
The team of 20 volunteers were in Redding, CA, just hours after their services were requested on Friday, July 10 and spent the weekend searching through chest high starthistle and stickers, with no sign of the missing baby. Another group of 18 El Dorado County Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers headed up on Sunday.

New power lines being installed between Martis Creek and Northstar

Perini appoints new Douglas County Deputy Sheriff

Matthew Schlanger was sworn in on Monday, July 13, 2015 in a ceremony held at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in Minden, Nevada.
The appointment comes as a result of several months of testing and evaluation consisting of a physical agility test, oral interview, extensive background investigation, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and medical exam.
