SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Join the City of South Lake Tahoe and its Multicultural Committee on Saturday, September 14 as the community is invited to come together and learn about, and celebrate, different cultures through art, music, food, and entertainment.

This free one-day event will feature cultural displays, kids' activities, food trucks, vendor booths, and more, at Bijou Community Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Juvenile arrested after car stolen in South Lake Tahoe, crashes into police car

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A juvenile was arrested on Saturday after allegedly stealing a vehicle from a home on Tanglewood Drive. South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Scott Crivelli said the car was stolen at 3 a.m., and later in the day it was spotted near Martin Avenue and Black Bart Avenue. The officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) who saw the stolen car attempted to make a traffic stop at Black Bart and Genoa avenues. The car sped away.

Bread & Broth 4 Kids Cram-A-Fire-Truck with food event

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Help Bread & Broth 4 Kids on Saturday, August 10 when they hold Cram-A-Fire-Truck from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Grocery Outlet.

For many years, Bread & Broth 4 Kids has sponsored Cram-A-Cruiser events to supplement the food purchased for the B&B 4 Kids weekend food program. For the upcoming event this weekend, the fire department has donated the use of a fire truck to hold all food donations. They are hoping the community will “cram” the vehicle with nutritious, kid-friendly food items.

Stuck big-rig closes SR89 at Emerald Bay for much of the day

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The driver of a 73-foot big rig took a route not approved as a truck route on Monday morning, finding himself, and the truck, stuck on SR89 and stranding motorists. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded at 11:12 a.m. to the area just north of Cascade Creek, and south of Emerald Bay. Traffic was held up for hours when the truck took a turn too tight, blocking the flow of vehicles.

The truck-trailer combination will remain on the highway until it can be moved safely, but traffic is flowing. The air lines on the truck are inoperable.

The Bread & Broth talented cooks served up a great dinner at the Monday Meal on July 29 to the 96 dinner guests who came to St. Theresa Grace Hall between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to enjoy both another hot, full-course meal and socializing with their fellow diners. It’s always a surprise to the dinner guests as to the evening’s menu but once again they were not disappointed. Baked pork chops smothered in a mushroom/onion gravy, rice, broccoli with a cheese sauce, applesauce, and a green salad made up the evening’s food lineup.

I have been a South Lake full-time resident for nearly five years, and in that short time, I’ve managed to build a community here for myself. I have no plans to leave or become a part-time resident. This is my home, and I love and cherish it deeply.

Politically, I lean far left. But I have enough experience working in progressive spaces to recognize that no singular piece of legislation is exceptional enough to escape any sort of critical review. Policy only works when it’s written well, regardless of which side is pushing it.

South Lake Tahoe forecast: Sunny and warm

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An upper ridge is parked over California this week, keeping daytime high temperatures above average. Late Friday, an upper air trough will move into the Pacific Northwest which will push the ridge to the east a bit. Daytime temperatures may start to cool slightly through the following weekend.

At this time there is no rain or thunderstorms in the forecast.

Monday - Sunny, with a high near 86. South wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Monthly gaming report: Lake Tahoe casinos "win" figure was $21.4M in June

Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,286,686,312 for June 2024, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's latest monthly report. This amounts to a 3.25 percent increase compared to the same month a year ago when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,246,020,144. For the fiscal year, the gaming win has increased by 4.36 percent with $15,765,165,340 in "win".

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Major travel delays can be expected on SR28 next week in North Lake Tahoe

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of a broadband installation project and gas-line replacement work continuing along State Route 28 (SR-28) along the north shore of Lake Tahoe next week.

The broadband project is a part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed broadband into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.

One-way traffic control is scheduled along SR-28 between the Tahoe State Park entrance and the State Route 89 intersection:

November ballot filling up with candidates as deadline draws near

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The November 5 election is just over 90 days away, and candidates have started to file the necessary paperwork for several local elected positions open this year.

The deadline to file is August 9, 2024. If an incumbent does not file for reelection, the filing period will be extended to August 14 for that position only.

Tahoe History Talks on the Beach: Toogee Sielsch and history of urbanized black bears

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Historical Society hosts another Tahoe History Talks on the Beach on Tuesday, August 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Lakeview Commons. This week's speaker is local urbanized black bear expert Toogee Sielsch. He taught himself bear behavior during morning walks in the 1990s and is now South Lake Tahoe's bear authority.

Always entertaining, Toogee (pronounced 2-G) will talk about the black bear's history on the South Shore, why numbers have grown over the last decade, and how people can be better stewards in keeping bears safe.

This week, nine community advocates and I were named in a frivolous lawsuit, the vacancy tax opposition’s latest attempt to use their deep pockets and outside money to sap resources and intimidate local supporters on behalf of special interest groups.

The opposition, funded by California’s real estate lobbying group, is afraid that November’s election won’t turn out in their favor. Sharon Kerrigan, VP of the Realtors Association, recently went on record at a public meeting to say that, “governing shouldn’t happen at the ballot box.” Now they are apparently trying the courts.

Tahoe Knight Monsters add two new players to 2024-25 roster

The Tahoe Knight Monsters, proud ECHL Affiliate of the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights and the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights have announced the addition of two new players for the 2024-25 season: Logan Nelson and Jeff Solow.

Forward Logan Nelson

Nelson, 30, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Knight Monsters lineup. Tahoe Douglas Fire raised rates for service on August 1

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) has changed its rate schedule that cover many aspects of the services it provides to the community. The rise in rates includes, but is not limited to, construction inspections, vacation home rental inspections, special event inspections, plan reviews, incident response, and stand-by fees.

Fees enable TDFPD to recuperate expenses incurred by vehicles, personnel, and materials involved with fire prevention, fire suppression, and emergency medical services used by locals, businesses, and visitors.

Lake Tahoe air quality affected by Park Fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Smoke from the Park Fire has been affecting the air quality for much of Northern California and Western Nevada, and more of the same can be expected through Thursday. The Park Fire is 18 percent contained as of June 31 and has burned 391,200 acres covering four counties, Butte, Plumas, Shasta, and Tehama.

According to AirNow, Lake Tahoe has been in the "moderate" to "unhealthy for sensitive groups" ranges, with the North Shore having the poorer air quality. Truckee is currently in the unhealthy" range.

South Lake Tahoe man one of three killed during brawl at Ely State Prison

Twenty-two-year-old Connor Brown of South Lake Tahoe man has been identified as one of three men killed during an altercation at Ely State Prison on Tuesday. The Nevada Department of Corrections also identified inmate Zackaria Luz, and the name of the third person has not yet been released, pending notification of family.

Head-on collision in South Lake Tahoe sends four to hospital

TRPA settles with jet boat operator who entered the Upper Truckee River Marsh

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A $10,000 penalty against a jet boat operator on Lake Tahoe was approved by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) during its July 24 board meeting.

In April 2024, TRPA staff received complaints and video documentation of a motorized watercraft operating more than 5 mph in the sensitive Upper Truckee River Marsh on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. Operating motorized watercraft in tributaries of Lake Tahoe and speeding within 600 feet of shore are prohibited by TRPA regulations to protect public safety, water quality, habitat, and recreation.

Appellate Court overturns South Lake Tahoe murder conviction

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In November 2021, a South Lake Tahoe jury of six men, and six women found Tevarez Richard Lopez guilty of murdering Dennis "Spike" Wright, Jr. at the Beverly Lodge in South Lake Tahoe on January 30, 2016. The guilty verdict led Judge Suzanne Kingsbury to sentence him to Life Without the Possibility of Parole on December 2, 2022.

Lake Tahoe Clarity Report: Winter lake conditions clearest in 40 years while summer clarity drops

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - There is both good news and bad news in the annual clarity report, released Tuesday by the University of California, Davis – Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC).

The clarity of Lake Tahoe’s famed blue waters in 2023 continued its years-long trend of improving during the winter and deteriorating during the summer.

Winter lake conditions were the clearest observed since 1983 and the 10th best on record, with visibility of 91.8 feet under the surface, compared with 72.2 feet in 2022.

Water quality results after sewer spill at Fallen Leaf Lake

TUESDAY UPDATE: The six samples collected 36 hours after Sunday morning's spill showed bacteria counts, including e.coli, back to baseline at all sampling sites. The warning signs have been removed.

The bacteria levels detected are below the requirements for beach closures.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Twenty-one-year-old Owen Joseph McDonough visiting from Villa Hills, Kentucky has been positively identified as the drowning victim rescued from rough waters at Lake Tahoe's Whale Beach on Sunday evening.

McDonough's family has been notified.

20-year-old dies in drowning accident at Lake Tahoe's Whale Beach

MONDAY MORNING UPDATE: Twenty-one-year-old Owen Joseph McDonough visiting from Villa Hills, Kentucky has been positively identified as the drowning victim rescued from rough waters at Lake Tahoe's Whale Beach on Sunday evening.

McDonough's family has been notified.
