Lake Tahoe Community College celebrates new entrance, main building remodel
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/12/2023 - 11:00pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) celebrated its new entrance, plaza, and the rest of the "Remodel for Efficiency" project last week in South Lake Tahoe.
In 2014, South Lake Tahoe voters approved Measure F, a $55 million bond measure to modernize and upgrade technology, repair aging facilities and systems, and improve educational programs and student learning environments.
Mt. Tallac High School and Elevated Digital Learning Academy open doors for Showcase
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/12/2023 - 10:15pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Mt. Tallac High School and Elevated Digital Learning Academy are in a new home this school year, and they opened their doors recently for an "Alt Ed Showcase."
The two schools now operate out of the old Al Tahoe Elementary School building on Lyons Avenue in South Lake Tahoe. The Boys and Girls Club moved into their new home next door, leaving the classrooms and grounds ready for a metamorphosis. The walls have been painted, and the rooms are now full of new desks and tables, and comfortable learning areas. There are signs of encouragement throughout the school.
Group to have rally before next Douglas County School District
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/12/2023 - 3:52pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The next meeting for the Douglas County School Board is on Tuesday, November 14 at 4 p.m. The day before will be a rally along US 395 from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. The group "We Deserve A Better Board" hopes to fill the sidewalks through the middle of town with the color red and positive messages on signs to elevate their voice and show the community they want positive change.

SLT planning commissioners to hear annexation plans for Upper Truckee Marsh area
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/11/2023 - 12:02amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a proposal to pre-zone 90 parcels currently located within what is called the "City Sphere of Influence" in El Dorado County so they can become part of the city limits through annexation.
These parcels are part of five annexation scenarios presented during the June 6 South Lake Tahoe City Council public hearing. The council voted to pursue the "Cleanup Annexation Scenario" which encompasses the Heavenly California Base, the Tahoe Valley Campground, and parcels located in the Upper Truckee Marsh adjacent to the City’s jurisdictional boundary.

Park Heavenly (https://www.parkheavenly.com/) shows parking areas, both free and reserved spots at Cal Lodge in South Lake Tahoe, and transportation options on an interactive map.
"Reserve N Ski" parking reservations are required on weekends (Saturday - Sunday) and Holiday/Peak Periods at the California Base Area parking lot until noon. A flat fee of $20 will be required for cars with three or fewer passengers and it must be paid for in advance online.

At South Tahoe High, just six percent of Latino students graduate with enough completed units with a C or better in the A-G class requirements, and this meeting is being held to help parents navigate through the requirements of college-bound students. Forty-two percent of the overall population at STHS has the classes needed for California colleges and universities.

South Tahoe High Boys Soccer and Girls Volleyball make bids for state titles

South Tahoe High Boys Tennis Team wins first state championship, to be honored at LTUSD meeting
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/09/2023 - 4:22pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High School (STHS) Boys Tennis Team took top honors at the 2023 Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) 3A State Championships, the first time the school has won the state championship. STHS also has a third-place finish for its doubles team.
The STHS players won the state title by beating Boulder City 12-6 at Gorman High School. They beat Adelson 13-5, then Boulder City 12-6 to bring home the state champion trophy.
Brief Mt. Rose Highway traffic delays as avalanche control system replaced Monday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/09/2023 - 12:43pmBrief traffic stoppages and delays will take place Monday, Nov. 13 at the Mt. Rose Highway (State Route 431) summit as the Nevada Department of Transportation replaces an aging avalanche control system.
Brief traffic stoppages will take place on Nov. 13 between 7 a.m.-5 p.m. near the Mt. Rose Summit Visitors Welcome Center. While the majority of traffic stoppages will be brief, traffic delays could last up to 30 minutes as a helicopter delivers roofing components as part of the final construction of the project. The traffic closure schedule is subject to change.
Kiwanis of South Tahoe has goal of 3,0000 new pairs of socks this holiday season

Last year they were able to collect over 2,000 pairs and are looking to put new socks on even more children this year.

Conflict bear euthanized in Meyers - two cubs transported to rehabilitation facility

There was no happy ending like that experienced by Hank (Henrietta) the Tank) in 2022. This was a female bear recently trapped whose DNA was linked to 12 incidents of significant property damage and home invasions at many different properties in different locations.

With another winter season rapidly approaching, the City of South Lake Tahoe has been working on a plan to alleviate the stress put on the Heavenly Valley neighborhood.
Van Sickle Bi-State Park entrance road and facilities closing for winter; Grounds remain open

The Conservancy and Nevada State Parks co-manage the 725-acre Van Sickle Bi-State Park. The park provides day-use opportunities for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. For visitor safety, sledding is not allowed.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The once annual Renaissance Faire has been missing from the South Lake Tahoe landscape for a few years due to construction at its old home of the Camp Richardson campgrounds, COVID, and then epic snow in 2023.
The Enchantment of Valhalla Renaissance is set to make a triumphant return for the 2024 season. Step back in time and immerse yourself in a world of chivalry, enchantment, and merriment over the weekend of August 24-25, 2024, at the Tahoe Valley Campground.
The popular jousting event is also returning with the faire.

Prescription fire operations continue this week at north shore of Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/07/2023 - 2:05pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) is scheduled to continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks at Lake Tahoe. California Tahoe Conservancy with assistance from Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit are scheduled to continue burning this week on the North Shore, conditions and weather permitting. Smoke from these operations may be present throughout the Tahoe Basin.
Fallen Leaf Lake Road to close temporarilty for Liberty Utilities project
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/07/2023 - 12:50pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities will be completing an upgrade of the primary overhead powerline and secondary connections on Fallen Leaf Road between Emigrant Road and the Fallen Leaf Marina. Due to safety concerns, this work needs to be completed during daytime hours, resulting in road closures.
Installation of the new powerlines will require Liberty Utilities to close access to Fallen Leaf Road so that they can lay out the new lines and lift them into place.

Man arrested at Twin Bridges on multiple charges, including driving a stolen vehicle
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/07/2023 - 12:17pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) were working on locating a vehicle listed on a "be on the lookout" report on November 6 when they spotted a car matching the description on US50 at Twin Bridges at approximately 11 a.m.
CHP Officer Nunes and EDSO Deputy Vernon conducted a vehicle stop on the suspected stolen car, a blue Honda CRV. The car was being driven by a male who told them he just purchased the car and also verbally gave them a name other than his real name.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/06/2023 - 8:04pmEL DORADO COUNTY, CALIF. - Deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responded to the area of High Meadow Trail on a call of multiple shots heard on Saturday, November 4, 2023. The caller said they'd heard about 100 shots fired. Upon investigation, the deputies found target shooters in the forest who were there legally and conducting themselves in a safe manner with a "good backdrop," according to the sheriff's office.
Some shooting is allowed in some areas of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

United Against Hate Week, which is recognized from November 12-18, is a call for local civic action to stop the hate and biases that pose a dangerous threat to the safety and civility of our neighborhoods, towns, and cities. Across the state, 100’s of cities and organizations are also taking a stand against hate by coming together throughout the week.

"Anything Goes" is the musical that opened this past Friday at South Tahoe High School. Thank goodness you all have all of next weekend to see the show...do NOT miss it.
The show opens with the entire cast on stage, quite the spectacle of energy, enthusiasm, and excitement. It's a whirlwind from the get-go.
A glimpse of winter to start the week, mild and sunny Veterans Day

There will be a glimpse of winter starting with rain showers that will become more numerous during the day on Monday. Some snow may cause travel impacts over the Sierra Monday late afternoon and night. From Tuesday afternoon onward, including the Veteran`s Day weekend, relatively quiet weather is expected for most areas. A few mountain snow showers are possible on Friday.

Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches above 7000 feet. A dusting to an inch is possible for Lake Tahoe and Truckee communities.
Plan on slippery road conditions, delays, and chain controls. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute. Allow extra time to reach your destination.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Smaine Fund is holding a fundraising event at The Hangar on Friday, November 10, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be live music, raffle prizes, and a Teton Gravity Research (TGR) film premiere.
Funds will go to the Smaine Fund which is dedicated to supporting initiatives that make a positive impact on athletes, and participation in this event will directly contribute to those efforts.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Learn more about collective giving and the Tahoe Women's Community Fund (TWCF) at a wine social on Tuesday, November 7 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Idel Hour in South Lake Tahoe
Join them for a glass of wine and learn more about TWCF. Bring a friend and help the nonprofit build its membership. they have a goal to get enough sponsors and members so they can give out at least $100,000 in grants in Spring 2024.
It's a great time to just catch up with like-minded folks about philanthropy.
Tom Millham to receive DAR Medal of Honor

This is the most prestigious honor awarded by the DAR and given to individuals who are United States citizens by birth and who have shown extraordinary qualities of leadership, trustworthiness, service, and patriotism.
The recipients must have made unusual and lasting contributions to our American Heritage by truly giving of themselves to their community, state, country, and fellowmen.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though the Attic has been closed up for months, the Barton Auxiliary will reopen it for one day only as they hold a Holiday Faire in the spot on Sunday, November 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Not only will there be Christmas decor, winter, and holiday clothing, sporting items, and the perfect white elephant gift, but there will also be the famous cheeseballs for sale.
Stop by and look for your holiday goodies at the former Attic Thrift Store location, 970 Lodi Ave., South Lake Tahoe.
