Construction projects around Lake Tahoe mapped out

With the launch of an revamped TahoeRoads.com, the public now has information needed to navigate the roads around Lake Tahoe on both sides of the state line during a road work season that has major projects planned.

The Tahoe Traffic Management Plan is a cooperative effort by California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), Truckee-North Tahoe Transportation Management Association, South Shore Transportation Management Association and other public agencies, utilities, businesses and others to minimize traffic impacts through the construction zones.

There are nine major projects scheduled for this May-October as shown in the map in this story:

1) State Route 89 Wilson Avenue to Granlibakken Road for drainage improvements, road widening, paving, permanent striping and sign installations (primary work this season from Ward Creek to Cedar Crest Avenue). Expect delays to 20 minutes May-July.

2) State Route 89 one-tenth mile east of junction with Highway 89 to junction with Highway 89 in Tahoe City for realignment of Highway 89 and replacement of Truckee River “Fanny” Bridge, construction of three roundabouts, streetscape and drainage improvements; multi-use path. This is a multi-year project each May-October. Expect delays up to 20 minutes. Full project can be seen at www.fannybridge.com.

3) State Route 89 from Sugar Pine Point State to Meeks Bay Resort for a shared-use path and drainage improvements July-October. Intermittent delays up to 20 min.

4) Highway 50 in South lake Tahoe from the Y to the Trout Creek Bridge for drainage improvements, road widening, sidewalk construction, paving. This is a multi-year project each May-October. Expect delays up to 30 minutes.

5) Highway 50 at Lakeshore Blvd for pedestrian safety enhancements from September-October. Expect delays up to 20 minutes.

6) Highway 50 near Logan Shoals for slope stabilization and erosion control from May-October. Expect delays up to 20 minutes.

7) State Route 28 from US 50 to Incline Village for water quality and safety enhancements and shared-use path (Sand Harbor to Incline) from May-October. Expect delays up to 20 minutes.

8) State Route 207 Kingsbury Grade from summit of Daggett Pass to SR 206 for drainage repairs from April-October. Expect delays up to 20 minutes.

9) I-80 Westbound from Boca to Truckee for emergency pavement removal, pavement
grinding; Pavement rehabilitation, polyester concrete, joint seals, striping until October. Expect delays up to 20 minutes.

In 2018 Caltrans will begin their two-year, $3.15 million Meyers Intersection project to improve safety by reducing the number and/or severity of collisions at the intersection of State Route 89 and Highway 50 by constructing a roundabout.

In 2019, the Echo Summit Sidehill Viaduct project will begin. This project will replace the Echo Summit Bridge located in El Dorado County 7 miles west of the City of South Lake Tahoe on U.S. Highway 50 over Echo Summit. Depending on what contractors decide, this project will impact travel over the summit to South Lake Tahoe for at least one building season.
