Public comment sought at South Lake Tahoe US 50 Main Street Open House

Event Date:
August 27, 2019 - 5:30pm

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The next public US Highway 50 Main Street Management Plan open house will be held on Tuesday, August 27 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel Tallac Room from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The event will consist of a series of informational stations where residents can give input on the planning stages of this transformational project. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) are seeking comments as different options for the design of the corridor come into focus.

The proposed Main Street runs the current Highway 50 from MontBleu and Lake Parkway at the eastern end to Pioneer Trail at the west side. The goal is a walkable, bikeable stretch that creates a more welcoming environment and a continuation of the area revitalization begun by Heavenly Village. It will give residents and visitors will have a safer and more usable main street.

During the last open house in May, dozens of residents and business owners from both sides of the state line participated, offering ideas and providing information on how they use roads on the South Shore.

Planners have taken those comments and ideas and narrowed them down, and on Tuesday they'll take more comments and ideas to further get the Main Street that addresses many needs.

The final plan will incorporate environmental, economic and transportation goals including the creation of a year-round destination for recreation, meetings and events; revitalization and remodeling of the casino corridor; welcoming new investments in the community; improving the appeal, access to Lake Tahoe while improving air and water quality.

The planned U.S. 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project (SSCRP) moves the highway behind the casinos, allowing through traffic to move through and giving a new look the remaining Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

“This project is so much more than a road realignment,” said Joanne S. Marchetta, executive director of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. “It will continue the transformation of the south shore and will improve our sense of place as a community.
