South Lake Tahoe ranks first in most expensive place in California to spend New Year's Eve

South Lake Tahoe is on top of a list that perhaps isn't the best list to be on as the area it is now the most expensive destination in California to spend New Year's Eve 2016.

The region is a very popular one with skiing, concerts, and bars and restaurants where can ring in the new year from.

According to a recent survey by LosAngelesHotels.org, the average overnight stay in SLT is $345 for the most affordable room. They took the rate for the cheapest available double room at a 3-star hotel (or above) at 20 popular destinations for the holiday in the state.

"The Sierra Nevada locale is also the only destination in California that is virtually sold out for New Year's Eve," said Diane Muller from LosAngelesHotels.org. "Procrastinators, however, can still find a bit more affordable rooms if they are willing to stay at least three nights."

In a quick search via on-line hotel booking sites Thursday morning, the lowest priced available room for the weekend was found at the Black Jack Motel, which has a two-star rating. They had two rooms open at $256 per night. The two-star Beverly Lodge had two rooms available at $459/night and 1.5 star Knight's Inn had a room still available for $397/night. The only three-star motels and above with availability were Lakeside Inn ($449) and 3.5 star Hard Rock Hotel with a rate of $412.

Napa, located in the heart of the Napa Valley wine region, ranks as the runner-up on the survey. Despite its second-place ranking, it is almost $100 more affordable than South Lake Tahoe. Los Angeles rounds out the Top 3 at a nightly rate of $239 for its least expensive room.

At a price tag of $115, San Jose appears among the more affordable California destinations. Least expensive overall are Bakersfield and Eureka, where New Year's Eve celebrators should be able to find a room for well below $100.
