On July 1, 1967 the police department began providing police services to the City. In 2017,we’ll plan a small public 50th celebration at the police department. Our initial plans include hosting and honoring some of the department’s original members. Over the years there have been many changes. Some points of interest include:

Hal Cole's term as mayor during the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th anniversary is coming to a close. During the next City Council meeting on Monday, December 7, the next mayor and mayor pro-tem will be elected. All current council members are eligible though first term Councilwoman Wendy David is the current mayor pro-tem.
Normally held on Tuesdays, the Council meeting was moved to Monday so Tom Davis could attend his daughter-in-law's graduation from nursing school in Tennessee. The meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers at the airport.

The City of South Lake Tahoe has been celebrating its 50th anniversary all year long with a parade, gala and different events to highlight the successes of the city's first five decades. The actual incorporation day was November 30, 1965 and the City will commemorate that with a free community open house in the Council Chambers at the South Lake Tahoe Airport on November 30, 2015 at 3 p.m.

Those words, said by South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Brian Williams, were echoed throughout the evening as the City of South Lake Tahoe celebrated its first 50 years with a golden anniversary gala Saturday night.
Almost 300 people were at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel to share memories of the past, review of the present, and a look towards the future of a city that was formed because many of the residents were tired of being represented by a government in Placerville.

The City of South Lake Tahoe is coming off a successful 50th Anniversary Parade and heading right into the event to cap off a year of celebrating, the 50th Anniversary Gala.
The black tie event on Saturday, November 7 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel will recognize many founding members, community organizations and residents who made becoming a city a possibility. Significant events will also be highlighted.
Hundreds turn out for Grand Opening of Bijou Bike Park
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/19/2015 - 11:35pmLong after the barbecue was over, long after the booths, announcers and crowds were gone, cyclists were still riding the new trails at the Bijou Bike Park as the sun was setting on Saturday night.
The Bijou Bike park was officially opened in a ceremony that followed the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th Anniversary parade.
After opening statements by park creators, City Council and the Mayor, Ted Wendell spoke to the crowd as the Bijou Bike Park was dedicated to his late brother Tom, who died in 2012.

Winners announced for City's History Hunt

The questions led people on a tour of South Lake Tahoe, looking for clues in city owned locations.

Route for City's 50th Parade changed so it leads to "Party in the Park"
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/05/2015 - 6:35pmThe route of the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th Anniversary Parade on Saturday, September 19 has changed direction so it will lead to Bijou Park for the grand opening of the Bijou Bike Park.
So far there are 85 entries in the parade along with over 300 walkers joining in the festivities. The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the 'Y' and will proceed East on Highway 50, turn right onto Al Tahoe Blvd. and end at Bijou Community Park where the city will officially open and dedicate the Bijou Bike Park with a “Party at the Park.”

South Tahoe High School alumni are having an "All Class Reunion" that will be held over the weekend of September 18-20, 2015 to coincide with the City's 50th Anniversary parade.
The reunion home base is the Knight's Inn (formerly Super 8 and the Sands Motel).
The weekend of celebration starts off with a meet-n-greet on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. with no-host cocktails and dinner following. During the day on Saturday the classes will participate in the City of South Lake Tahoe's parade which runs along Highway 50 from Al Tahoe Blvd to the Y, starting at 10 a.m.

They have extended the parade application submission deadline to this Friday, September 4 at 5 p.m. Applications are available online at www.cityofslt.us/50parade or at any City Office.

They used the last concert of the summer at Lakeview Commons on August 27 as the backdrop to a drone video and photograph.

There will be two photos taken, one at 6 p.m. and the other at 7:15 p.m. by Tahoe Production House. They will also be using a drone at the 6 p.m. photo shoot.
This will also be a celebration of the last Live at Lakeview concert for the summer
with the South Shore’s own Lavish Green taking center stage.

Roberta Mason will be talking about “How and Why Higher Education Made Its
Way to the South Shore.” Mason was instrumental in bringing Lake Tahoe Community College to town and was a long time member of their Board of Trustees.
Tom Davis will be sharing tales of “How Three Went Out and One Came Back – Boating on Lake Tahoe” and stories of celebrity entertainers who have visited the south shore.
Tahoe Paradise Park celebrates 50th anniversary Saturday

Back in 1965, a resolution of the El Dorado County Supervisors and a vote of the people residing in Meyers voted to create a park for their community. Now, 50 years later, that same community is celebrating the park's 50th anniversary and everyone is invited.
On Saturday, July 11, the celebration at the park will start at 10 a.m. and go until the sun sets behind the mountains.
There will be food, vendors, a car show, beer and wine garden and a concert throughout the day.
Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District holding special meeting Thursday

Things are moving forward quickly for the Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District. The former maintenance person who lived at the park is gone, there are now special events planned, and a new employee is about to be hired.
There is a special meeting of the district's board of directors on Thursday night that will help form this summer's plans for the community park.
The meeting will be held at the park located at 1011 San Bernardino Avenue in Meyers at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 9.

The Services Center includes the planning, building, public works, engineering, and streets/snow removal departments and is located at 1052 Tata Lane in South Lake Tahoe.
Archives of past projects will be o display as will a look into the future with their upcoming projects.
This is free, open to the public and refreshments will be served.

As part of the year long celebration, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department will be hosting an open house at the police department located at 1352 Johnson Blvd. on Thursday, June 11th from 3 p.m.- 7 p.m. in honor of the City’s 50th Anniversary. Children are welcome and will enjoy static displays and talk to officers assigned to special teams such as K9 and SWAT.

The next meeting of the Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District (TPRID) will be on Thursday, June 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Tahoe Paradise Park.
Planning of the park's 50th anniversary party this summer is on the agenda as is the TPRID general plan and the budget. In closed session will be discussion of the employment of a park manager.
The next regular meeting will be on June 25th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The park is located at 1011 San Bernardino Avenue.

This weekend, join them at both the Parks and Recreation Department and the Lake Tahoe Historical Museum on Saturday, June 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

History Sunday: The 1860s town of Rowlands on the South Shore

Travelers came west in droves in 1849 after the discovery of gold near Placerville. Many used the Tahoe Wagon Road which is known as Pioneer Trail today. When the first major silver deposit in the United States was discovered in Virginia City in 1859, many of those same gold hunters traveled over that same road into Nevada.

Not only are eight South Lake Tahoe Police Department employees being honored during a ceremony on Thursday, May 14, two K9s will be officially sworn in.
The annual ceremony is held in conjunction with National Peace Officer’s Memorial Week. This year, the awards will be given during part of the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th Anniversary celebration.

Opinion: Tahoe Paradise Park meetings now orderly and focused

Gone was the uncomfortable feeling I had watching a Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District (TPRID) board meeting. Gone were the bullies. Gone were the mistruths.
Present was teamwork, respect, order, transparency and a general commitment to make the park a viable one that families, residents and visitors could enjoy.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/09/2014 - 12:20pmThe newly elected South Lake Tahoe City Council members, City Clerk and City Treasurer were all sworn in during Tuesday's council meeting.
Susan Alessi was re-elected in November as clerk and David Olivo was retained his seat as treasurer. Both terms are for four years.
Newcomers Wendy David and Austin Sass both won seats on the council and they joined re-elected Tom Davis in the swearing in ceremony.
City of South Lake Tahoe plans year long 50th anniversary celebration

Everyone is invited to recognize, commemorate and celebrate, from former employees, current and past residents, visitors, business owners as well as friends and neighbors.
The overall focus points of the 'celebration' are on building historic awareness, current day recognition and community pride in both the immediate and extended community that South Lake Tahoe so fortunately holds.
They want it it be obvious throughout the town all year that the city is celebrating 50 years.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/23/2014 - 11:32pmAttendees of the Valhalla Art, Music and Theater Festival learned how to use a cross-cut saw, the primary tool still used today to keep trails open and accessible in the Wilderness. The event celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the 1964 National Wilderness Preservation Act.
U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit staff provided saws, logs and gloves and guided over 50 participants of all ages as they cut through a 10-inch log and received the souvenir slice branded with the 50th Wilderness Anniversary logo.

The 1964 landmark conservation bill protected the most pristine wildlands for future generations. Today, there are nearly 110 million acres in the country that have been designated as wilderness. Desolation Wilderness, Mokelumne, Granite Chief, and Carson-Iceburg are all within a short drive of Lake Tahoe.

Barton Memorial Hospital celebrates 50th anniversary

“All my children were born in Reno or St. Mary’s because we didn’t have a doctor or a hospital,” said longtime resident Patty Olson, who helped organize fundraising for Barton in the late 1950s.
