Walker Fire burns 3,715 acres and is now 35% contained

8 p.m. update 8/18/15:

The Walker Fire has now burned 3,715 acres and is now 35% contained. It has been determined that the fire is human caused and is under investigation.

There are 484 firefighters working on the fire along with 4 helicopters, 2 Air tankers, 34 Engines, 10 Crews, 6 Water Tenders, and 4 Dozers.

235 structures remain threatened but none have burned so far.

Mark Mulder wins American Century Golf Championship

Mark Mulder had a premonition on Thursday after playing his practice rounds at Edgewood Tahoe. "I'm going to win this," he said. "I was in kind of the groove and knew I had an absolute chance," he said of the American Century Golf Championship.

Too bad his parents didn't take advantage of their son's 8-1 odds to win at the Harvey's Sportsbook. The former Oakland Athletic's pitcher, and current ESPN Baseball Tonight analyst, made the premonition a reality by winning the 26th Annual American Century Golf Championship today with a score of 82.

Project: State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $25 million project from the "Y" junction with U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to Cascade Road, north of Camp Richardson. Curb, gutter and sidewalks will be added in the 1.1-mile four-lane section, and the highway will be widened in the two-lane section to Visitor Center Road to provide 4-foot paved shoulders on each side. Drainage systems are also being built and the roadway will be resurfaced. Completion is expected by spring 2017.

Local scouts hold Burger Night fundraiser for Thailand Eagle Scout project

Two Whittell High School juniors, Chris Evans and Aubrey Felton, are working on their Eagle Scout rank. The young men aren't doing any textbook effort and have set their goals very high with taking on a hands-on project at a school in Thailand.

To raise the funds needed to complete the project, Evans and Felton have joined forces with the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club in putting on Burger Night at the Red Hut Cafe Ski Run location on Wednesday, May 6 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Countdown to Amgen: Best viewing spots

Lake Tahoe’s natural geography of steep climbs and long descents against postcard views will offer plenty of sites to catch race action as the top women cyclists compete in Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the Amgen Tour of California Women’s Race May 8-9.

With the start and finish line at Heavenly’s California Base Lodge, spectators will be updated with live race announcements, and entertained with high-energy music, local and Amgen Tour of California exhibitors, food and beverage.

Mild Weather allows Lake Tahoe recreation spots to open early

Beaches, parks, trailheads, campgrounds and popular Lake Tahoe viewing areas will start opening on April 1 for the 2015 season, almost two months ahead of schedule.

A mild winter has allowed the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) to start opening the popular areas but they won't be fully opened since they won't be fully staffed until closer to summer.

Agencies to continue prescribed fire operations around Lake Tahoe

California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations on Monday, January 26, 2015. Operations may take place near Tahoe City on Highway 28 between Rocky Ridge and Lake Forest, near Emerald Bay at Eagle Point Campground, the Boat Camp and behind Vikingsholm, Gardner Mountain near South Tahoe High School, Luther Pass near Grass Lake, Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly, and on the East Shore near Logan Creek Drive and the north side of Spooner Summit. Operations will last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

Widespread fire operations to continue in Lake Tahoe

California State Parks, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations on Tuesday, January 20, 2015. Operations may take place near Tahoe City on Highway 28 between Rocky Ridge and Lake Forest, near Emerald Bay at Eagle Point Campground, the Boat Camp and behind Vikingsholm, Fallen Leaf Lake, Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly, north of Spooner Summit, and Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park near Sand Harbor.

Over 400 acres will be burned as fire operations continue over the next several weeks.

1:11 p.m. - Lake Tahoe Blvd - AN 22-YEAR-OLD MAN WAS ARRESTED FOR DRIVING ON A SUSPENDED LICENSE.

1:18 p.m. - Al Tahoe Blvd - A 52-YEAR-OLD MAN WAS REPORTED MISSING. MISSING PERSON WAS ENTERED INTO THE MISSING/UNIDENTIFIED PERSON SYSTEM AND THE INCIDENT WAS DOCUMENTED.

The 20 acre Cascade Fire in South Lake Tahoe now 90% contained

9/29/14 update: Heavy precipitation over the weekend allowed firefighters to achieve 90 percent containment of the Cascade Fire near Snow Lake in the Desolation Wilderness. Crews will begin repairing impacts from fire suppression activities and will monitor the fire to detect any renewed activity later this week due to drier, warmer and windier conditions.

Bayview Trailhead and Campground and TaylorCreek Sno-Park on Hwy. 89 have reopened. The cause of the 20-acre fire is under investigation, but it has been determined to be human-caused.

Mark Rypien wins American Century Championship: Winner of 1st and 25th celebrity tournament

The end of the 25th American Century Golf Championship in South Lake Tahoe wasn't seen by the thousands of spectators that normally line the 18th hole in the final round.

Lightning caused the tournament to be placed on delay for a couple of hours, and by the time play resumed thousands of people had headed back to their cars, hotels and homes.

In true Celebrity Golf fashion, the end was an exciting one. At the time of the delay there was a tie between Mark Rypien and Jeremy Roenick, with Annika Sorenstam in third with just a few holes left to play.

Late Night Runners in South Lake Tahoe for Reno-Tahoe Odyssey

Runners with lights and reflective gear ran through South Lake Tahoe Friday night as part of the 10th Annual Reno-Tahoe Odyssey relay race. Drivers in town might have seen the blinking arrows, informing runners of the route. Others in town reported seeing the bonfires and groups of people stationed where runners were changed. The Beachcomber Inn housed one team for a quick nap and shower before they headed to the finish.

Cold Water Challenges Going Viral in South Lake Tahoe

The Cold Water Challenge. Unless you're still in hibernation you've probably heard of someone in South Lake Tahoe taking the Cold Water Challenge.

But What is it?

Someone takes a video of themselves jumping into a body of cold water (such as Lake Tahoe, the Truckee River or Trout Creek). Once they emerge from the water they record themselves saying the names of people they are challenging to jump in cold water as well, and within 24 hours.
