USFS asks public to stay safe during the Fourth of July holiday at Lake Tahoe

The Fourth of July holiday period is the busiest time of year in the Lake Tahoe Basin. For those visiting during the holiday and attending one of the firework displays over the lake, expect extremely crowded conditions and excess traffic. Because of the Basin’s high elevation, expect intense sunlight during the day and much lower temperatures at night. Bring sunscreen, a jacket, and carry a flashlight. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Kingsbury road rage incident leads to arrest of one driver

Two vehicles driving down Kingsbury Grade on Monday night were involved in a road rage incident that led to the arrest of a Stateline, Nevada man.

On May 30, 2016, at approximately 10:51 p.m., the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) received calls about a road rage incident between two cars driving down Kingsbury Grade. Both of the involved drivers called 911 to complain about the other driver's aggressive and possibly intoxicated driving.

During the incident it is alleged that a gun was pointed at a driver after which the parties separated.

Reno man arrested in Stateline after SLT theft

Micah Flaherty, 33, from Reno was arrested on Monday evening after word got out about a theft at the South Lake Tahoe K-Mart by a man seen dropping a gun in the store's parking lot.

On May 30, 2016, at 5:10 p.m., the Douglas County Sheriff's Office received information about the theft, and that a male suspect was reportedly running toward his vehicle when he dropped, and retrieved, what appeared to be a handgun. The suspect fled in a silver Volkswagen.

Time to get your firewood permits from Forest Service

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin the sale of personal use fuelwood permits at the Forest Supervisor’s Office at 35 College Drive in South Lake Tahoe on Monday, May 23, 2016, and at the North Shore office at 855 Alder Avenue in Incline Village on Wednesday, May 25, 2016. Permits cost $20 per cord, with a two-cord minimum purchase and a limit of 10 cords per household.

Permits should be purchased early and wood collected promptly as fire restrictions are likely to go into effect early and there may be days when no cutting is allowed.

Award winning musician/producer arrested in Stateline drug bust

An award-winning musician and producer was arrested Thursday near a Lake Tahoe casino after drug enforcement officers found nearly 58 grams of methamphetamine on the man, according to a Tri-NET task force officer.

Domestic violence situation turns into kidnapping in Douglas County

A 32-year-old Joshua Albericci of Gardnerville has been arrested on multiple charges stemming from his alledged assault and kidnapping of his 29-year-old wife.

Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to the report of a domestic dispute in the Gardnerville Ranchos area of the county on April 27, 2016 at 10:45 a.m. When they arrived at the home in the 800 block of Short Court, they learned that the victim had fled to a neighbor's home after being physically assaulted by her husband.

Two month long investigation nets two in Carson City drug bust

The Tri-NET Narcotic Task Force arrested two Carson City men last week after a two-month long investigation into drug trafficking in the area.

Michael Bowman, 45, was taken into custody on April 14, 2016 by the Carson City Sheriff's Office without incident on Highway 50 East. He was charged with four felonies, Level I Trafficking a Controlled Substance – Meth, Conspiracy to Violate the Uniformed Controlled Substance Act, Sales of a Controlled Substance - Meth and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Two arrested in Carson City on methamphetamine trafficking charges

Two people were arrested in Carson City on Wednesday as the result of a month-long investigation into the drug trafficking of methamphetamine into the city from Reno.

Marell Maurice Johnson, 42, and Desire Lynn Kissel-Hunziker, 25, were arrested at the North Carson Street Taco Bell by the Nevada DPS Tri-Net team after a sale, and purchase, of drugs transpired. The pair allegedly had nearly 1 pound of high quality methamphetamine for sale on them at the time of their arrest.

Burglary suspects arrested after stolen guns found in car

Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) responded to a burglary in progress call in the 1300 block of Cedar Creek Circle in the Gardnerville Ranchos at 3:20 a.m. on April 8.

A homeowner had found an unknown male in his garage, claiming a friend of his was in need of medical attention.

DCSO said the male matched the description of a similar incident in the neighborhood, one where the suspect(s) weren't able to get into the garage or home.

Washoe Sheriff cybercops nab child predator in Reno

Joshua Larsen, age 36 of Reno, was arrested by members of the Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes against Children Task Force (I.C.A.C.), on child Sexual Assault and multiple child pornography charges, including Use of a Minor in Producing Pornography.

Law Enforcement became aware of Larsen after a tip was provided to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s “Cybertipline.”

Four arrested after high speed chase through Douglas County and South Lake Tahoe crime

2:45 p.m. 2/28/16 update:

Two different high speed chases through the Carson Valley and up Kingsbury Grade resulted in the arrest of two men and two women on Saturday, February 27, 2017.

At 3:10 p.m., a trooper from the Nevada Highway Patrol spotted a silver Mercedes-Benz with California plates going down U.S. 50 (Spooner Summit) at 85 mph. The driver failed to pull over for the trooper, instead turning South on Highway 395 towards Minden, Nev., at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Vehicle pursuit reaches 100 mph after suspects steal expensive liquor in Carson City

4:30 p.m. update: The name of the male taken into custody is 23-year-old Dominic Gonzalez from Newark, Calif. Gonzalez is currently being held at the Washoe County Jail on a felony charge for possession of stolen property as well as reckless driving, driving without a driver’s license, fail to stop at the scene of an accident, fail to give information to party at accident and failure to obey a peace officer.

Tahoe man busted for pounds of pot after pepper spraying homeless man

A 20-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested Monday on felony drug charges after he allegedly used pepper spray on a homeless man and then called 911 dispatch to report what he had done, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

South Lake Tahoe investigation leads to Georgetown drug bust

An investigation into the sales of drugs surrounding the murder of Dennis Wright, Jr. in South Lake Tahoe last month led the El Dorado County Sheriff SWAT team to Georgetown, Calif., on February 2, 2016 where they arrested 33-year-old Teveraz Lopez on drug charges.

Two separate investigations are currently ongoing surrounding the death of Wright, both a homicide investigation and a narcotics investigation according to EDSO Lt. Jim Byers.

Opinion: Everyone has a role in ending adolescent dating abuse

With the ever-changing and rapidly evolving technology around us, dating practices and expectations have changed. Nowadays, there are a myriad of communication mediums to balance including texting, sharing photos and videos, various social media apps, and actual face-to-face interactions. As a result, adolescents have adopted these enhanced dating expectations which shift signs of care and affection away from traditional Friday night movie date to a constant stream of selfies, texts, emojis, and virtual relationship statuses. Teen Dating Violence (TDV) is growing as fast as technology.

Vaping becoming an issue in South Lake Tahoe schools

South Tahoe High's Principal Chad Houck made a phone call to parents last week, warning them of the increased use (and subsequent detection) among teens of what is known as "vaping."

Vaping is to "inhale and exhale the vapor produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device." The devices are vaporizers, and what goes inside them became popular as a way to cut back on smoking cigarettes starting in 2007, but a 2014 Science News study showed that vaping did not boost quit rates.

Mark Zlendick, the former El Dorado County sheriff's deputy who was arrested in May, 2015 on drug charges, pleaded guilty to one charge of drug trafficking Tuesday, February 9.

Ponderosa High School coach arrested for inappropriate relations with students

The Ponderosa High School water polo coach was arrested by the El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies on Tuesday, January 26 on charges of sex with a minor with the intent of committing sexual acts and possession of child pornography.

Shane O’Rourke, 22, was arrested after the school's resource office obtained information that a coach at the school was possibly involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student. An investigation conducted with EDSO investigators determined O'Rourke had two inappropriate sexual relations with students.

STHS Resource Officer Andy Eissinger talks drugs, social media and theft

South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Andy Eissinger is enjoying his new job as the Resource Officer at South Tahoe High, having moved into the position when Aaron Crawford retired at the end of the 2014-15 school year.

Eissinger said the first five months on the job have gone well and have been a nice break from being on patrol for the City the last eight years. He spends all eight hours of the day on the campus, interacting with students and dealing with issues that come up on a daily basis.

Gardnerville man arrested on domestic battery and child abuse charges

A Douglas County man is in jail this morning after allegedly battering his wife and strangling her, shooting off a gun inside their home and resisting arrest on Monday, January 5, 2016.

At 11:10 p.m., deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call from a home in the 1300 block of Banner Drive in the Gardnerville Ranchos neighborhood. A woman had called, saying she had been battered and strangled by her husband.

South Lake Tahoe arrests down over the New Year holiday

As usual, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department bolstered our patrol staffing to meet the emergency response needs of our crowded City during the New Year celebration period. There were squads of officers patrolling the state line area, the Snow Globe festival and extra officers were also assigned to work patrol throughout the City. South Lake Tahoe was quite full with holiday revelers, and the number of calls for emergency police responses was consistent with recent past years. We are pleased to report there was a decrease in arrests as compared to last year.

Short and quiet New Year's Eve celebration at Stateline

The celebratory crowd at Stateline was once again a small crowd, estimated by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office to be between 5,000-10,000. The road through the casino corridor didn't have to close until 11:58 p.m.

Minors and alcohol the biggest issue for law enforcement at SnowGlobe

The three-day SnowGlobe music festival in South Lake Tahoe attracts a young crowd with many college, and high school students in attendance. They enjoy the electronic music with DJs that are heard throughout the venue on the three stages.

What is also popular at the event is drinking. The trained staff that serves alcohol at SnowGlobe knows what to look for in the way of fake identification which is evident of the citations issued over the first two days at the festival.

Deputies arrest pair of Grinches who stole holiday gifts

he Washoe County Sheriff’s Office arrested two men today on charges of stealing gifts from generous citizens in the Galena Forest area. The two men have been identified as Sean Madigan, 51, and his son, Depaul Madigan, 22, both of Reno. They are accused of taking Christmas gifts homeowners generously left as a ‘thank you’ for waste services employees.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the theft when several alert citizens called to report the suspicious activity. The homeowners were able to provide a vehicle description and a description of the subjects involved.

Winter Storm warning for Lake Tahoe: 6" to 12" on Sunday

3:20 p.m. update 12/13/15: Chains controls have expanded. Chains are required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow tires from 9 miles east of Placerville to 3 miles east of Pollock Pines, then snow tires or chains until 5 miles east of Kyburz where it is chains or 4WD with snow tires to Meyers.

Chains or snow tires around the lake including Spooner Summit and Kingsbury Grade.

I80 is chains or 4WD with snow tires from Nyack to Truckee. Trucks are being screened at Applegate and Nevada State Line for maximum chains in possession and permit loads are prohibited.

Man arrested after felony domestic assault in South Lake Tahoe

A man from Canyon Lake, Texas is sitting in a Carson City jail on suspicion of felony domestic battery with strangulation after attacking his girlfriend at the Tahoe Lakeshore Lodge in South Lake Tahoe.

Fernley man arrested for string of burglaries; WCSO offers home safety tips

Washoe County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a burglary suspect in Caughlin Ranch early this morning after the suspect attempted to elude deputies who were investigating a series of home and vehicle burglaries.

At approximately 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2015, deputies responded to the area of Longknife Road and Caughlin Parkway on a report of a vehicle burglary that had just occurred. Deputies canvassed the area and identified two burglarized vehicles. Deputies also discovered that the suspect had used garage door openers to enter and burglarize the residences.

Father in custody after four-year-old boy ingests meth

A 4-year-old Carson City boy was hospitalized Friday night after ingesting methamphetamine that allegedly belonged to the boy's father who is now custody on suspicion of child endangerment, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Taken into custody was Pedro Montanez, 27, on suspicion of child endangerment and possession of trafficking levels of a controlled substance.

Man facing several charges after South Lake Tahoe robbery

South Lake Tahoe Police Department officers responded to a report of an armed robbery on Friday night at 7:10 p.m. in the area of the CVS Pharmacy and Tahoe Beach Retreat Hotel on Highway 50. Two adult males reported being robbed by a man brandishing a handgun and long-bladed knife.

As they arrived, officers received other reports of the suspect firing one round after robbing two other adult men at the rear of the hotel.

SLT Police Chief on Officer Hounsell, auto theft, violent crime and winter driving

Tragedy at the Police Department. The department is deeply appreciative of the support given to the family of Mark Hounsell who was killed, along with his wife Jeanne and her friend Laura Fisher, in a motor vehicle accident. They are survived by 4 children who have been the recipients of beautiful and heartfelt support from the entire community. The fund for the Children is now approaching the goal of $130,000. Trio arrested in Carson Valley after theft at Walmart

Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) arrested three people on October 29 on various charges of theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.

23-year-old Robert Michael Dean, 24-year-old Dylan Andrew Mitts and 22-year-old Elizabeth Kathrine Spandau were arrested after an investigation into a theft at the Wal-Mart on Grant Way in Gardnerville, Nev.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested after shots fired at parked car

A 23-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested on October 29 on charges of being an ex-felon in possession of firearm, ammunition and for resisting arrest after a shooting the previous day.

Jahem Barton is suspected of firing several rounds into a car parked in front of a home in the 800 block of Emerald Bay Road.

According to South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Brian Williams, there is an active investigation into the matter and no other details are available at this time.

Barton remains jailed in the El Dorado County Jail Saturday night on a $38,000 bail hold.

Father and son arrested during El Dorado Hills marijuana grow bust

Complaints about an offensive smell and unsightly tarps brought out El Dorado County Sheriff's detectives to a home in El Dorado Hills who ended up uncovering a large marijuana grow.

On October 23, 2015, a search warrant was served on a residence and property in the 1400 block of Malcom Dixon Road.

When they arrived they found 52-year-old Jeffrey Johansen, Sr. guarding a marijuana grow from a tree house, armed with a shotgun. He complied with law enforcement and put down the shotgun.
