Six area meadows tapped to be restored by Forest Service

Six meadows in the southern portion of the Lake Tahoe Basin will be restored using a combination of tree removal, prescribed fire, stream channel repair, planting vegetation and rerouting trails starting in Spring 2017.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) made the announcement today of what is being called the Restoration of Fire Adapted Ecosystems Project.

STHS student's senior project shows him how to give back through sports

Seniors at South Tahoe High School must pick something to do for their senior project, a requirement of graduation, one that pushes them to do something different and unfamiliar. Some students learn to play a guitar, while others do stand up comedy. And some students like Ethan Strain, learn how to give back to their community and work with children.

The students must select an advisor for their project, someone who knows the chosen subject and can guide the student to a successful completion.

Lake Tahoe bike path carries high construction cost

Visitors to Lake Tahoe’s east shore could soon have a new bike path linking upscale Incline Village to Nevada’s Sand Harbor State Park, but the price tag might induce sticker shock: $12.5 million for the 3-mile project.

Yes, that is more than $4 million a mile in taxpayer dollars for a 10-foot-wide bike path traveling just about 16,000 feet along the picturesque mountain lake.

Not to mention another $7 million to $9 million that the Nevada Transportation Department plans to spend in state gas taxes in conjunction with the project on related environmental and safety needs.

St. Patrick's Day: Don't count on luck and drive after drinking

St. Patrick's Day DUI checkpoint in South Lake Tahoe

With St. Patrick's Day being one of the biggest holidays centered around partying, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department is having a DUI Checkpoint as well as extra patrols on the roads to help lower deaths and injuries.

The checkpoint will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. on St. Patrick's Day, March 17. The location has not been disclosed.

Missing Spinoni Italiano dogs may have been spotted in South Lake Tahoe

South Tahoe Now and Carson Now carried the story of a helicopter search for missing Spinoni Italiano dogs near Carson City, and now reports of the two pets being spotted in South Lake Tahoe are coming in.

On Friday night, owners Stacey and Lorne Bell were walking the dogs, Mara and Adele, in east Carson City along the Carson River and on the ridges in the Mexican Dam area. As Stacey went to take a photo, the dogs broke loose and took off running, possibly after a rabbit.

Amgen Tour announces Lake Tahoe men's and women's race schedule

Lake Tahoe will be the scene of both Amgen Tour of California's men's and women's races in May of 2016, and the routes announced Thursday show cyclists will ride into the Tahoe Basin from Kirkwood and Hope Valley, circle the lake, ride up the mountains leading to the Heavenly Mountain Resort and through South Lake Tahoe.

Amgen officials said more than 350 of the world’s top cyclists will challenge themselves in Lake Tahoe by putting their strength and muscle power to the test as they climb, descend and break away along steep and winding stretches of the Sierra on Thursday, May 19.

Last week we had the opportunity to attend a field trip at Heavenly Mountain Resort. Thanks to a grant written by STEEC member, Devin Middlebrook (TRPA Environmental Education Specialist), EPIC Promise (through Vail Resorts – Heavenly) covered the cost of transportation, lift tickets for the tram ride, use of snowshoes, and presenters. The day was well planned and all went smoothly.

We learned much about our environment including local animals, avalanche safety and snowmaking. And luckily we enjoyed a “blue bird” day at the top of the tram!

Still no sign of missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor; Not seen since Thursday

There is still no sign of 23-year-old Carson May, the Sugar Bowl ski instructor who went missing after taking an after-work run Thursday afternoon, despite efforts by 60 searchers at the resort on Sunday.

Searchers were back on this hill at 8:00 a.m. today.

Search continues for missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor

The search for a missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor has been called off for the evening by the Placer County Sheriff's Office.

More than 50 people spent the day searching for 23-year-old Carson May who hasn't been seen since Thursday when he went skiing after work.

Searchers, with the help of search and rescue dogs, have been focusing their search on the back side of the mountain where the sheriff's office has been able to get pings from May's cell phone.

Sierra snow conditions create rare avalanche problem

Unusual snowpack conditions in the Sierra Nevada are contributing to a type of avalanche problem that in the past decade has rarely been widespread in the region.

That’s according to the Sierra Avalanche Center, a non-profit organization that partners with the U.S. Forest Service to observe and analyze snow conditions in the Lake Tahoe area and beyond.

“There could be avalanches in places that have never seen avalanches before,” said Brandon Schwartz, lead forecaster for the center.

Missing Lake Tahoe skier rescued in same area as previous day SAR training

Douglas County Search and Resuce (DCSAR) spent Saturday doing technical training on the eastern slopes of the Carson Range. Heavenly Mountain Resort allowed the members to ride the Gondola and Tamarack chair before the resort opened to the public so that the training could focus on safely traveling down to the valley, as would be required on a real rescue.

They didn't have to wait long to use their finely tuned skills since they were called out to the resort on Sunday after a skier became lost in the same general area. DCSAR was able to safely locate and rescue the unidentified person.

Active duty military offered season pass to Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows for $25

Two good news stories out of Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows today.

First, they are now offering a season pass to all active duty military in exchange for a $25 donation to the “Military to the Mountains” program, a partnership between Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, High Fives Foundation, Achieve Tahoe (formerly Disabled Sports USA Far West) and Adaptive Training Foundation.

Man who inspired South Lake Tahoe act of kindness movement dies of ALS

Just over two months ago, we wrote about how a large group of South Tahoe High alumni were rallying behind one of their classmates, Kevin Sullivan, who was suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

At October's homecoming football game at STHS, many of Kevin's classmates from the class of 1984 and former teammates from the wrestling and football teams came together to honor Kevin and fondly share their memories.

Heavy snow stranded two snowmobilers and a vehicle in the Sierra Nevada during recent storms, bringing out search and rescue volunteers from both El Dorado and Alpine Counties in the last ten days.

Disneyland to close attractions to make way for new Star Wars land

To make way for "Star Wars," Disneyland is about to launch its largest expansion ever, which means shutting down a significant chunk of the Anaheim theme park.

In January, 10 attractions and eateries will close — some temporarily, some permanently — only a few months after the resort hiked the price of annual passes as much as 31%. This spring, Disneyland's biggest rival, Universal Studios Hollywood, plans to unveil a widely anticipated Harry Potter attraction.

Crackdown on holiday drunk drivers in South Lake Tahoe

If you’re enjoying the holidays with a drink, South Lake Tahoe Police Department has a message for you: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Due to the increase in drunk-driving-related fatalities around the holidays each year, law enforcement agencies across America will be actively searching for and arresting drunk drivers from December 18 to January 3.

Ask Hopeful Henry: Should I give my dog bones?

This week we had a request for help from a family whose 10 month old German Shepard got his muzzle stuck in a knuckle bone purchased from a pet store. He had eaten out the center of the bone and the bone became lodged onto his jaw. After the owner tried for an hour to remove the bone it became apparent that an emergency vet appointment was need. The bone had broken his tooth and was causing extreme pain. Alpine Animal Hospital was nice enough to squeeze them in right away and was able to remove the bone with a minor surgery.

CHP motorcycle safety campaign launched

California continues to experience high numbers of motorcycle-involved collision deaths and injuries, and because of this the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has been awarded a grant to promote motorcycle safety and awareness.

The goal of "Have a Good Ride II" is to reduce the number of motorcycle-involved fatal and injurty traffic collisions statewide.

Letter from STPUD: Not all potholes are the same

Potholes in our streets are a popular discussion item in Tahoe. Some potholes are simply holes in the asphalt paving, while others are actually low spots located over a utility pipeline. This summer, several articles have addressed potholes at various lengths. The South Tahoe Public Utility District (District) would like to provide some information concerning the “utility” potholes. There are multiple types of “utility” potholes:

1. Manhole structure on sanitary sewers (stamped STPUD)
2. Manhole structure on storm drain sewers (usually slotted)

Halloween is often recognized as a holiday that offers just as much fun for adults as it does for children. Youngsters may look forward to a night of trick-or-treating, but many adults choose to partake in the festivities, too – oftentimes with alcohol included. While Halloween may be a spooky night, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and California Highway Patrol (CHP) want to help ensure that it is also a safe one. Investigators are making a new push to solve the murder of a Nevada teen found slain in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., in 1979, as a part of a video campaign highlighting cold cases.

TAMBA's annual Corral Night Bike Ride this Saturday

While rain last week may have caused the Tahoe Area Mountain Bike Association (TAMBA) to reschedule their annual Corral Night, an unplanned work party turned a dampened event into a chance to fix up the Corral Trail with the California Conservation Corps.

Over 60 people joined in and the result of their labors will be shown off on Saturday, October 24 when bicycle enthusiasts will enjoy the trail at night, an annual tradition.

Exciting news for South Lake Tahoe, the cycling community and local tourism today when it was announced that the Amgen Tour of California will be returning to the South Shore for both men's and women's events.

Professional cyclists will return to the lake for the men's Stage 5 finish and the women's Stage 1 start on Thursday, May 19, 2016. The men will take off in Lodi, Calif. and finish at Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge in South Lake Tahoe. The women will also start/finish at Heavenly Mountain Resort on May 19.

25th Annual Lake Tahoe Toy Run

It is time once again for traditional South Lake Tahoe kick-off of the holiday season over the last 24 years, the Tahoe Toy Run.

Motorcycles full of toys for local youth in need will make their 25th run down Highway 50, this year from the airport to Sonney's BBQ Shack on October 3 starting at 10 a.m.

Bikers will start lining up the airport, which is located at 1901 Airport Road in South Lake Tahoe, at 10 a.m. for a 12 p.m. departure.

They will then proceed down Highway 50/Emerald Bay Road on the way to the party at Sonney's at 787 Emerald Bay Road.

Thousands participate in IRONMAN Lake Tahoe

Almost 2,500 athletes from around the world experienced a Lake Tahoe many will never know. A 2.4 miles swim in the lake was followed by a 112 mile bike ride and capped off with a 26.2 mile run.

Emerging from the pack as the overall winner was Gregory Lindquist, an attorney from Boulder, CO who competes in the Men's 30-34 age group. He finished in 9 hrs 39 minutes and 23 seconds. After hours of competition, second place finisher Ryan Linden was just 29 seconds behind. Linden is from Washington, MI and is also in the 30-34 group.
