Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/16/2014 - 9:37pmNevada Governor Brian Sandoval appointed Douglas County Sheriff Ron Pierini as chairman of the Nevada Commission of Police Officers' Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) on On Tuesday, May 13, 2014.
Sheriff Pierini has been on the Commission since 2002 and the Chairman since 2006 after being appointed by three Governors, Kenny Guinn, Jim Gibbons and Brian Sandoval.
According to a press releases, selection to the non-compensated Board of Commissioners is based largely upon the appointee's commitment to professionalism and excellence within the law enforcement field.

Women of all ages, not just moms, delighted in a morning of pampering and fitness. The morning started with the option to participate in a yoga class with The Studio Lake Tahoe or an outdoor cardio and strength training with Megan Waskiewicz from Lake Tahoe Community College.

Fourteen firefighters were recognized with service awards, including 20 year veterans Battalion Chief Jim Antti and Captain Chuck Salerno.
“Fire Chief Ben Sharit challenged 20 new firefighters and staff members to continue the important work we do every day in our community,” says Eric Guevin, Fire Marshal spokesperson for the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District.

Transitional Kindergarten Classes to be Held at Tahoe Valley Elementary
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/23/2014 - 6:16amChildren not 5 years old by the time school starts in the fall are unable to attend kindergarten due to a new state law, but the Lake Tahoe Unified School District will have Transitional Kindergarten (TK).
The Kindergarten Readiness Act, signed into law by Gov. Schwarzenegger in 2010, changed the kindergarten entry date from Dec. 2 to Sept. 1 so that children enter kindergarten at age 5. The law phases in the new age requirement by moving the cutoff date one month a year for three years, beginning this fall for children born between Nov. 2 and Dec. 2.

Push Fitness will host a fundraiser from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 12 for their massage therapist, Luisa, who is recovering from the loss of her daughter, Audrey Genesis Rugamas. Her coworkers hope to raise funds for living expenses so she can take time off work.
The event will include face painting, fitness pictures, karate show, waxing and sugaring, cut-a-thon, chair message.
Funds raised with these services will go toward Luisa’s expenses.
South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire Departments Participate in Active Shooter Exercises
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/04/2014 - 2:12pmIn order to be trained and prepared to handle active shooter situations, the South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire Departments took part in exercises at Lake Tahoe Community College on Thursday, April 3. They will continue the exercises on Monday at Tahoe Valley Elementary.
Both training sessions take place at school campuses that are on Spring Break so students and classes are not disturbed. The purpose of the exercises are to give the departments an opportunity to work together in order to be prepared should an active shooter incident take place within the city limits.
Puppy Mill Protest in Reno on Saturday

The entire month is dedicated to honoring victims and survivors of both child abuse and sexual assault. With 80 percent of sexual assault victims being under the age of 30 and a report of child abuse made every ten seconds, it is vital we stand up against the dangers of the abuse. As two of our primary focuses at LVF, we are illuminating the truths and celebrating the efforts to combat the violence directly impacting our community.
South Shore's Horizon Casino Resort to Close April 1

The resort was the one time local showcase of Elvis Presley and Liberace when the casino operated as Del Webb's Sahara Tahoe. In 1990 Del Webb sold the property to Kentucky based Columbia Sussex Corporation for $19 million.
Columbia Sussex owners, the Yung family, are the current operators under the corporate name, LV Casino LLC. Their lease ran out and long time Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley ranchers, the Park family, will take control after March 31.
Barton Helping Beyond the Hospital Walls

In March 2012, Barton Health engaged with the community to complete a comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) of South Lake Tahoe’s health needs. Part of the Affordable Care Act, all nonprofit hospitals must identify health needs for vulnerable, often under-served, populations within their community and create an action plan to address these needs.

Stacey Cook (Mammoth Mountain, CA) added to the U.S. momentum with ninth, her best super G finish since 2007. Austria’s Elisabeth Goergl won the race, which was a replacement for the canceled super G race last weekend due to a powerful winter storm that sidelined the weekend’s speed events.

In that 3 minutes, one math teacher was killed, two students were shot and the young shooter shot and killed himself.

This committee makes recommendations improving the processing of cases in drug courts, domestic violence courts, peer courts, and other community-based treatment courts. They also propose rules, standards, and forms; reviews and recommends legislation; identifies potential funding sources; oversees the treatment court grant process; and acts on assignments referred to it by the Judicial Council.

Over 18 million people and groups around the globe have registered on line as a participant in their own 10:17 on 10-17 drill. The recent earthquake in the Philippines shows that it is important to know what do in case of this type of emergency.
Most Lake Tahoe Community College Offices Will Be Closed Friday

6th Annual SuperFam Comes to South Lake Tahoe

Lead is highly toxic and can harm your child’s brain, causing lifelong learning and behavior problems. Children under age six are most at risk for lead poisoning, but there are also significant health risks for adults, newborns and pregnant women too.
Lead dust in the home is caused by chipping, peeling, flaking or deteriorating lead-based paint. Lead dust is not the same as household dust. Lead dust is often invisible, heavier, and stickier. It can be present in even the cleanest of homes.
IRONMAN in Lake Tahoe: A Spectator's View
