4th of July Parade to take new route through South Lake Tahoe

There will once again be a 4th of July Parade through South Lake Tahoe, and the community is invited to participate.

Celebrate the nation's birthday on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 beginning at 10:00 a.m. There is a new route this year. The parade will be staged on Ski Run Boulevard and head West on Highway 50 to Al Tahoe Boulevard where the parade will lead up Al Tahoe Blvd. and conclude again at Bijou Community Park with a community barbecue.

South Tahoe High Booster Club holding shredding fundraiser

4th annual Winter Bazaar in South Lake Tahoe

Toys and food needed for Community Toy Drive

For 26 years it was known as the "Tahoe Toy Drive" and motorcycles full of toys for local children would move through South Lake Tahoe in an effort to stock the toy shelves at Christmas Cheer.

The name has changed but the mission is the same.

Now known as the Community Toy Event, the local toy and food drive to benefit Christmas Cheer will take place on Saturday, October 7 at the American Legion Hall starting at noon.

The South Tahoe Association of Realtors is now sponsoring the event with the American Legion Post 795 and Ladies Auxiliary.

5th annual Save-A-Pet Fundraiser in South Lake Tahoe

16th anniversary of 9/11 honored with South Lake Tahoe ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Those who were alive on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 remember exactly what they were doing when they first saw the reports of the four attacks coordinated by al-Qaeda in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Today, sixteen years later, those who lost their lives during the attacks were remembered during a ceremony at the American Legion Hall.

Benefit concert to feature original Turtle Al Nichol

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Turtle Park, a musical group featuring Al Nichol, one of the original Turtles, will play at a benefit for the South Tahoe Cancer League Saturday, August 26 at the American Legion Hall.

The Turtles had several Top 40 hits from 1065 to 1970 including "Happy Together," "It Ain't Me Babe," and "Let Me Be."

Two of the members of Turtle Park, Park Kinnear and Nichol, are cancer survivors and are holding this show to raise funds and get volunteers for the South Tahoe Cancer League.

South Lake Tahoe road lined with spectators for 4th of July parade

For the second year in a row the City of South Lake Tahoe hosted the annual 4th of July parade through town, bringing hundreds of spectators and participants.

Over 75 vehicle and float entries were joined by more than 200 walkers and cyclists along the route which went along Lake Tahoe Boulevard from the Y to Bijou Park. Hundreds of holiday revelers lined the street wearing red, white and blue, cheering and waving as the parade went by.

Food Truck Weekend in South Lake Tahoe cancelled

Tahoe Truck Stop Food Truck Weekend, scheduled for July 14-16, 2017, has been cancelled. The 3-day event On Course Events had been planning was set to include 8 food trucks and a late night performance from Afrolicious at the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe.

With limited event support coupled with overwhelming costs associated with providing the appropriate infrastructure for the 8 trucks and expected guests all weekend, On Course Event decided this event became too expensive to produce at this time.

South Lake Tahoe 4th of July Parade and BBQ

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Over 75 float and vehicle entries as well as over 200 walkers will be participating in the 2nd annual City of South Lake Tahoe's 4th of July parade.

The July 4 parade will start at 10:00 a.m. at the "Y," where Highways 50 and 89 intersect, and follow Highway 50 to Al Tahoe Boulevard and end at Bijou Park where a family friendly After Party will take place immediately following the conclusion of the parade. There will be a BBQ at the party with all proceeds going to the American Legion.

Crowd turns out for South Lake Tahoe Memorial Day Ceremony

"I'm so proud of our community and this great turnout," said South Lake Tahoe City Councilman Tom Davis during Monday's annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetery.

A larger crowd than normal watched the ceremony which featured boys and girl scouts, music and speakers that included Gold Star Mom Patty Smith. Her son, Sgt. Timothy Michael Smith, was one of three South Lake Tahoe men to die in action since the September 11 attacks in 2001. Smith, 25, who died April 7, 2008, after his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad.

Road work pauses for the Memorial Day holiday

Roadwork stops in South Lake Tahoe at 6:00 a.m. Friday, so drivers have an easy go of it until 6:00 a.m. Wednesday as crews break for the Memorial Day holiday. Those working on the City of South Lake Tahoe roads go by the same rules as Caltrans, so both will stop for this period.

Starting Wednesday, Caltrans continues on the three-year Highway 50 project from the Y to Trout Creek. This year's work is from the Y to Tahoe Keys Boulevard. Another project is the completion of the bike trail from El Dorado Beach to Ski Run Blvd.

Farmers markets return to South Lake Tahoe

The snow has melted (most places) at lake level and spring is finally here, so that means it's time for farmers markets in South Lake Tahoe.

First market to open is the Lake Tahoe Market on Wednesday, May 24 at Kahle Community Park, 236 Kingsbury Grade near the state line from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. They will be open on Wednesdays through the summer.

Ruth Marie Hanson Woods 1927-2017

Ruth Marie Hanson Woods, 89, passed away January 16, 2017 at Sunshine Terrace in Logan, Utah. Ruth was born on Labor Day, September 5, 1927 in Santa Rosa, California. Her mother used to say, “What an appropriate day for Ruth to be born, on Labor Day.”

She was an only child, the loving and devoted daughter of Percy Brunell and Helen Patricia LeCornec Hanson. She was raised in Santa Rosa and attended area schools and graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1945. She married Norman C. Woods on April 13, 1947, at St. Rose Catholic Church, in Santa Rosa.

Veterans celebrated in South Lake Tahoe ceremony

The largest crowd ever to attend the annual Veterans Day Celebration in South Lake Tahoe converged at the American Legion Friday as veterans and service men and women from all wars and military operations were remembered.

"Each of us are here today because of a veteran, those who fought to preserve our freedom," said American Legion Post Chaplain Curt Emrie as he opened the ceremony. "Pray for those who paid the ultimate price and always keep veterans near and dear to our hearts."

Editorial: Hand over heart, flags down at dusk and in bad weather

We've all seen the recent NFL player's protest over the treatment of blacks by not standing during the playing of the National Anthem at games. While I don’t agree with their method, it made me think about the way people respect the flag in general.

When growing up I always heard "Don't let the flag touch the ground," "The flag is only outside during daylight hours and not during rain or bad weather," and, as a Girl Scout, I learned how to fold the flag in the correct manner and learned the flag had to be burned if it was mistreated.

September 11, 2001 at 5:51 a.m. PST/ 8:51 a.m. local New York time. Its one of those days, and times, that people remember what they were doing at the exact moment the images of the first airplane guided by terrorists hitting a tower of the World Trade Center.

September 11, 2001 at 6:03 a.m. PST/ 9:03 a.m. local New York time. As most of the nation was watching their televisions or listening to their radios, the second tower of the World Trade Center was hit by another airplane.

Free Farmer's Market in South Lake Tahoe for those in need; Volunteers needed

The mobile food pantry from El Dorado County Food Bank will be in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, July 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the American Legion parking lot. For over 15 years the non-profit has brought food to the South Shore. Besides the food bags from local residents in need, the food bank also delivers to several non-profits in town including Senior Plaza and Bread and Broth.

During the summer and fall, extra fresh produce is added to the distributions.

Letter to the Editor: City’s 4th of July Parade a huge success

The City of South Lake Tahoe hosted its first annual 4th of July parade on Monday, July 4, 2016. There were a total of 78 vehicles and approximately 200 people on foot either walking, biking, or dancing. American Legion Post 795 served as the parade marshals.

The City of South Lake Tahoe would like to say "Thank You" to all the parade participants, businesses and volunteers for making the 4th of July parade a fantastic community event!

South Lake Tahoe parade brings out visitors and the community

"This is fantastic," said South Lake Tahoe Mayor Wendy David. "We get to show our visitors what a great sense of community we have."

Large 4th of July parade expected in South Lake Tahoe

The City of South Lake Tahoe will be hosting this year's 4th of July parade, and a large turnout is expected for both the parade and the post-celebration activities at the American Legion.

Community members, clubs, groups are all signing up to take part in the parade on Monday, July 4, starting at 10:00 a.m. So far, there are 50 entries and 150 walkers participating.

The route goes from the Crossing at the "Y" to Al Tahoe Blvd, at the Rite-Aid parking lot so travelers can expect travel delays on the road during the duration of the parade.

Area seniors get free farmer's market check booklets

County residents over the age of 60 that meet income guidelines are eligible to receive a booklet of coupons worth $20 for use at area farmer's markets this July.

The El Dorado County Area Agency on Aging has a limited supply of Senior Farmers’ Market check booklets available for qualified El Dorado County seniors. Each eligible senior will receive one booklet that includes five checks redeemable for $4 each to be used at Certified Farmers’ Markets for the purchase of fresh, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, cut herbs and raw unprocessed honey.

Farmers Markets return to the South Shore

It is time for farmer's markets to return to South Lake Tahoe and Stateline, the first two set to start Friday, June 3.

On Friday, the popular Ski Run Blvd market opens for their seventh season at 3:00 p.m. Food, crafts, fruit and vegetables will be featured in the middle of the block in front of Blue Angel Cafe. There will be a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 30 at 11:00 a.m. at the Happy Homestead Cemetery in South Lake Tahoe to remember those who have died in service to our nation. The American Legion Post 795 is hosting the ceremony and has invited the public to attend both the remembrance and for refreshments at their hall afterwards.

Close to 600 flags will be placed at Happy Homestead Cemetery by the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge on Friday morning, and they'll remain throughout the holiday weekend. The cemetery is the final resting place to more than 560 veterans.

The Food Bank of El Dorado County will bring their mobile food pantry to South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, April 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the American Legion located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

One allocation of emergency supplemental groceries will be given per qualifying household. Those who are struggling to make ends meet, live in El Dorado County and meet the State of California Health and Social Services Agency Emergency Food Assistance Program income guidelines may stop by for food distribution. South Lake Tahoe to hold city-wide 4th of July parade
