Douglas County Sheriff's Office hosts Fright at the Fairgrounds through October

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is hosting their fourth annual “Fright at the Fairgrounds” every Friday and Saturday night through the month of October starting Friday October 2.

Fright at the Fairgrounds happens at the Douglas County Fairgrounds located off Pinenut Road in Gardnerville. Tickets are $5.00 for kids and $10.00 for adults.

New Jersey man's body found in Lake Tahoe seven weeks after boat washed ashore

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Dumont, New Jersey man missing in Lake Tahoe since August has been found.

Ryan Normoyle, 29, had rented a boat from the Ski Run Boat Company on August 10, 2020. That night, the boat washed ashore in Glenbrook, Nevada but Ryan was not with the boat.

Peaceful rally planned for South Lake Tahoe Sunday

The I Run With Maud-South Lake Tahoe group is holding a rally at Lakeview Commons on Sunday, September 27 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to celebrate free speech, inclusion and diversity.

Organizers said they'd like to see many of our neighbors represented at this fun, safe, family-friendly, peaceful event. They expect to have a variety of local speakers and an event that is "inspiring, uplifting and overwhelmingly positive for the South Lake Tahoe community.

Volunteers to help are also needed.

Two victims and two suspects in Stateline stabbing

STATELINE, Nev. - One man was arrested and a manhunt ensued for another after two victims were stabbed at Stateline late Friday, September 18. Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded to a report of a stabbing outside of Harrah's Tahoe at 10:56 p.m. Once at the scene they were flagged down by bystanders who saw two suspects run through the casino's parking lot. Deputies and South Lake Tahoe police officers created a perimeter around the area including the alley at MontBleu, Lake Parkway and the forested areas behind the casino including Van Sickle Bi-State Park.

V & T Railway Polar Express canceled, replaced with Santa's Drive-Thru Village

As a result of COVID-19, the V&T Railway Commission has announced that fan favorite, Polar Express, has been canceled for the 2020 season. In its place, the railway will host Santa’s Drive-Thru Village, a socially distanced holiday event, December 11 through 13 and December 18 through 24.

Lake Tahoe Marathon canceled for 2020

The 26th annual Lake Tahoe Marathon scheduled for October 9-11 has been canceled for 2020.

Due to the volume of participants and required bus transportation to starting points, the popular three-day event was canceled since gathering and social distancing protocols couldn't be met. The date for the event will be October 8-10, 2021.

Organizer Les Wright of South Lake Tahoe sent out the following letter to participants this week:

The odds of being able to have the 25th Lake Tahoe Marathon this year on Oct 9-11th have dropped to about 1%.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested on alleged firearm and battery charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 24-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested on multiple charges Sunday after police officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at 12:33 a.m.

According to Lt. Travis Cabral of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), they got a call that Alan Isaias Martinez-Perez was holding a woman hostage at gunpoint in her home.

The female victim said Martinez attempted to escape out a window and threw his pistol and rifle ammunition outside prior to arrival of SLTPD, but he never made it out. Police surrounded the residence and Martinez surrendered.

Washoe County issues very first Stage 2 air pollution warning

WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - The Washoe County Health District – Air Quality Management Division (AQMD) has issued a Stage 2 Air Pollution Warning for Washoe County based on current air pollution levels. This warning means that all residents should stay indoors and reduce activity levels due to the susceptibility of increased health risks.

This is the first Stage 2 warning ever issued by the Health District and is in place until further notice.

Guess the first day of snow and win while supporting Sierra State Parks Foundation

The Sierra State Parks Foundation will host a virtual fundraiser that challenges folks to predict the first day of snow, which will run until the actual first day of snow. The first snow event will be determined when it snows one inch at the Pioneer Monument located in Donner Memorial State Park (Truckee, Calif.).

Fire burning west of Lake Tahoe near Loon Lake

UPDATE 10:30AM 9/9: The Fork Fire is now measured at 2,500 acres. It continues to burn in the Crystal Basin/Gerle Creek area, 15 miles northeast of Pollock Pines.

UPDATE 7:30PM: The Fork Fire in the Pacific Ranger District is 15 miles northeast of Pollock Pines. It is now 500 acres with 0 percent containment and is spreading toward the 2014 King Fire burn scar in the Rubicon drainage on the Georgetown Ranger District.

Forests, campgrounds and day-use areas to close in California and Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All campgrounds and day use areas on U.S. Forest Service land in California and the Lake Tahoe Basin must close at 5:00 p.m. Monday, September 7 due to the unprecedented and dangerous fire conditions and extreme heat, significant wind events, dry conditions, and firefighting resources that are stretched to the limit.

The USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region has announced the following temporary closures and fire restrictions to provide for public safety and reduce the potential for human caused fire starts:

Memorial unveiled during commemorative run/walk for victims of 2011 Carson City IHOP shooting

The Nevada National Guard and Carson City community members took part in a memorial run on Sunday to commemorate the victims of the September 6, 2011 shooting at the International House of Pancakes (IHOP). This is the ninth year a memorial walk/run has been held in memory of Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, Sgt.

Creek Fire grows to over 73,000 acres, no containment

MONDAY UPDATE 9:30AM: New figures for the fire were updated this morning. The Creek Fire is now at 78,790 acres with no containment. Almost 1,000 firefighters are working at the fire scene which is under gusty wind and high heat warnings Monday.

Heavy smoke from the Creek Fire over South Lake Tahoe Saturday

SUNDAY UPDATE 11:00 a.m.: Eight hundred personnel are currently fighting the Creek Fire which has grown to 45,500 acres.

The Creek Fire a fast-moving fire burning on both Districts of the Forest. The fire which started near the communities of Big Creek and Huntington Lake, moved very quickly prompting several evacuations. Early Saturday afternoon the fire crossed the San Joaquin River and made a run into the Mammoth Pool area. Prompting some members of the public to shelter in place near Wagner’s Store and Campground.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services holds "Miles for Recovery" virtual event

UPDATE: Registration until September 15, 2020.

September is National Recovery Month for both substance abuse and mental health. In recognition of this, Tahoe Youth & Family Services is partnering with Carson Valley Medical Center and providing a Miles For Recovery virtual challenge fundraiser.

This fundraiser will replace the organization’s annual 5K event at the beginning of Carson Valley Days that was canceled because of the pandemic.

Fundraising, donations and grants are the only source of income for the 501c3 nonprofit.

South Lake Tahoe hit and run suspect arrested after allegedly striking woman on Lime scooter

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe man was arrested Tuesday, August 18 after hitting a woman on a Lime scooter with his car and leaving the scene.

Early Tuesday afternoon the woman, who is also from South Lake Tahoe, was near the intersection of Johnson Boulevard and Fairway Driver on the scooter when she was allegedly struck by a vehicle. The driver left the scene.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. - The 24th annual Lake Tahoe Summit has moved to a virtual format this year. U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada will be hosting the event that will feature Olympian David Wise as the keynote speaker.

Since the first Lake Tahoe Summit in 1997, the area’s congressional representatives have pledged to keep working together and with local, state, and private sector partners to restore Tahoe’s environment, improve forest health, and confront climate change.

Public invited to help clean up South Lake Tahoe with #IRunWithMaud group

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Join volunteers who are helping to clean up South Lake Tahoe, one region at a time. There are three clean up Sundays scheduled starting with August 9. #IRunWithMaud, a local anti-racism group, will be cleaning Sierra Boulevard from Barbara Avenue to US50 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Their goal is to help underserved areas by helping to keep them trash free.

Challenge of accurate Census numbers in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Every ten years a Census is taken of all people living in the Unitied States. While the state of California currently has a 64.5 percent response rate, South Lake Tahoe once again is lagging far behind.

As of August 6, 28.1 percent of those living in South Lake Tahoe had turned in answers to the Census Bureau. El Dorado County as a whole, 58.6 percent. Nationally, the Census return rate is 63.2 percent.

Following Tuesday's collision between a SUV and a woman on a Lime scooter where the driver left the scene, a pedestrian was hit on Wednesday night, and again the driver left the scene.

New study investigates link between clothes dryers and microplastic pollution in Lake Tahoe

Last year, Desert Research Institute (DRI) and the League to Save Lake Tahoe detected microplastics in Lake Tahoe for the first time ever, many of which were microfibers. This discovery revealed that microplastic pollution is not just present in oceans, but also in mountains and lakes, including highly protected areas like Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has resumed work on area highways. The following is their current project list at Lake Tahoe and in the Sierra.

Most traffic-interfering work will be restricted from 6 a.m. July 2 until 8 p.m. Monday, July 6 due to the July Fourth holiday.

Man wanted by US Marshals arrested in South Lake Tahoe after pursuit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Detectives from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) were assisting the U.S. Marshals office in locating a wanted felon who was thought to be in the South Lake Tahoe area.

Matthew Core, a 38-year-old man from the Sacramento area had been in federal custody in the Sacramento jail when he was released due to COVID-19, then went on the run according to SLTPD Detective Sgt. Travis Cabral.

Workout With Law Enforcement Day for Douglas County Special Olympics

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) hosted a “Workout with Law Enforcement” day at Lampe Park in Gardnerville for Special Olympics Athletes, an event that concluded the ‘DCSO Special Olympics Fitness Challenge’.

Members of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office worked-out alongside the athletes, cheering each other on, just as they do at the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run event.
