Foot pursuit lands a South Lake Tahoe man in jail

A South Lake Tahoe man was arrested Friday, July 27 after leading police officers on a foot pursuit in the Bijou neighborhood.

An officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) attempted to make contact with a 36-year-old local man who matched the description of a person seen casing homes in the area.

As soon as the officer approached, the man took off on foot. Other officers joined in the pursuit and the suspect was found in a backyard on Champlain Drive in South Lake Tahoe.

VHR deadline for bear box installation extended

Citing a lack of bear boxes and contractors to install them, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department has extended the July 31, 2018 deadline their installation at vacation home rentals (VHRs) for two months.

The new ordinance that went into effect December 22, 2017 gave homeowners of the VHRs until this month to have them installed. While hundreds have been installed, there are still many waiting to get them in the ground and they are on waiting lists.

Local man dies in South Lake Tahoe motorcycle vs. truck crash

4:13 p.m. UPDATE: The driver of the truck involved in Thursday's fatal crash is a 63-year-old male from South Lake Tahoe. As investigators worked at the scene, Lake Tahoe Boulevard was closed to all traffic for about 2.5 hours from Takela Drive to Fairway Avenue.

"South Lake Tahoe Police Department appreciates the public’s patience during the closure/detour," said Lt. David Stevenson. "The Police Department would also like to thank CHP and Cal Trans for assisting with traffic control. We would also like to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased."

South Lake Tahoe Police busy with Phish concert goers and trash

South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) had their hands full on Tuesday before, during and after the first of two Phish concerts at the outdoor arena at Harveys Lake Tahoe.

Trash including empty alcohol bottles and beer boxes littered much of the open space surrounding Stateline and Cedar Avenues where hundreds of fans lined the streets. In addition to the trash, pop-up tents with vendors starting selling clothing and other items illegally.

The owner of the corner property, chateau at the Village, sent out crews to help clean, according to SLTPD Lt. David Stevenson.

Known South Lake Tahoe arsonist arrested on robbery and arson charges

A South Lake Tahoe man is behind bars facing several charges including arson and robbery.

His first alleged offense was on July 16 at 12:36 p.m. when 43-year-old Eric Almdale allegedly threatened to kill a family member over money. He fled the home in the 1000 block of Echo Avenue with the money.

Man stabbed over parking space at South Lake Tahoe CVS

Road rage over a parking spot in South Lake Tahoe led to the stabbing of a 51-year-old man from San Jose on Thursday, July 12.

At about 10:30 a.m., the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) received numerous 911 calls about a stabbing in front of the CVS Pharmacy located at 3471 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Upon arrival they found Scott Nevin bleeding from a stab wound. Witnesses identified 71-year-old Paul Ivanovsky from Sparks as the person who allegedly stabbed Nevin, and he was sitting in his car nearby, awaiting the arrival of police.

Two-person police team protecting South Lake Tahoe waters

A day on the lake is a dream come true for many, but for two South Lake Tahoe Police Department officers it's another day at the office. As they navigate Lake Tahoe they are looking for speeders, unsafe practices, life vests, drunk boaters and boat registrations, as well as responding to life threatening crashes and drownings.

"It's our little city out here," explained Steve O'Brien who has manned the South Lake Tahoe police boat for 17 summers.

Shooting victim and murder suspect in South Lake Tahoe deadly shooting identified

One man died and his shooter arrested after an argument on Saturday, June 30 in South Lake Tahoe.

Police responded to the 1000 block of Julie Lane shortly before 5:30 p.m. after reports of shots fired. Upon arrival they found 44-year-old Christopher Kitchen of South Lake Tahoe on the road at the entrance to Tahoe Verde Mobile Home Park. Despite life saving measures, Kitchen was prounounced deceased after medics took the victim to Barton Memorial Hospital.

One dead, one arrested in South Lake Tahoe shooting

UPDATE 7/2 8:15AM: The victim in Saturday's shooting has been identified as 44-year-old Christopher Kitchen of South Lake Tahoe. The suspect, 62-year-old Roy Figaro of South Lake Tahoe, is in the El Dorado County Jail and is facing murder charges.

Trevor M. Bright has been identified as the victim in Tuesday night's hit-and-run vehicle vs. bicycle crash in South Lake Tahoe.

Arrest made in South Lake Tahoe felony hit-and-run

11:15 p.m. update: According to El Dorado County Jail logs, the suspect who turned themself into law enforcement is Joseph Matthew Chesler, 33, of South Lake Tahoe. His bail has been set at $125,000, $75,000 for Hit and Run Causing Injury/Death and $50,000 for Involuntary Manslaughter.

Cyclist killed by hit-and-run driver along US50 in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 33-year-old South Lake Tahoe man died after being struck by a vehicle on US 50 between Grocery Outlet and the Upper Truckee Bridge as he crossed the highway.

Crews from Security Paving, the Caltrans contractor working in the area, arrived at the job site at 5:38 a.m. Wednesday and found the body off the side of the road and called the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

SLTPD arrived first but turned the incident over to California Highway Patrol (CHP) as it was construction zone incident. Work had not yet begun for the day.

More victims come forward in South Lake Tahoe day care center sexual assault case

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Additional victims from the Pequenos Rascals Learning Center have come forward in the child sexual assault case against one of the licensees, David Rodriguez-Flores. Sr.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department, (SLTPD) received information on June 15 of an on-going possible child sexual assault that had occurred at the child care center located at 3336 Sandy Way. Multiple victims came forward and reported a pattern of abuse dating back at least two years.

South Lake Tahoe daycare staff member arrested on child sexual assault charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After an investigation into an allegation of ongoing child sexual assault at a South Lake Tahoe daycare center, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) have arrested the father of the operator of Pequeños Rascals Daycare.

SLTPD seeks public's help in finding murder suspect's vehicle

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) continues to investigate the homicide of a South Lake Tahoe man that occurred on June 11 on the 3600 block of Spruce Avenue.

62-year-old Gregory Mitchoff of South Lake Tahoe was found in the 3600 block of Spruce Avenue in South Lake Tahoe by police responding to a report of gunshots heard at 9:30 p.m. that evening. He later died at the hospital.

Woman arrested after South Lake Tahoe collision

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department was kept busy with a couple of different alcohol-related incidents Thursday evening.

The first one occurred when a 22-year-old South Lake Tahoe woman crashed her Chevy Suburban into a Volkswagon Jetta driven by a local man. The woman, who had two children in her vehicle, a 3-year-old and 1 1/2-year-old, was headed northbound on Ski Run Boulevard when she attempted to make a turn onto Tamarack Avenue. She hit the Jetta which was heading eastbound and slowing to stop at the intersection.

"Today is a very special day," South Lake Tahoe Mayor Wendy David said as she opened the unveiling ceremony for the Walk of Champions Friday. "Local athletes are honored for giving South Lake Tahoe recognition on the international and national stage."

Many area emergency personnel carry Naloxone for overdoses

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) is joining the South Lake Tahoe Fire and Lake Valley Fire medics in having their personnel carrying medication used to block the effects of opioids. Narcan (commercial name for Naloxone) can be given to persons suffering from suspected or accidental opioid overdoses at the earliest possible time to minimize overdosing.

Man dies after being shot multiple times in South Lake Tahoe

A 62-year-old South Lake Tahoe man has died after being shot multiple times by an unknown assailant.

Gregory Mitchoff was found in the 3600 block of Spruce Avenue in South Lake Tahoe by police responding to a report of gunshots heard at 9:30 p.m. on June 11. They rendered aid and Mitchoff was transported to Barton Hospital where he later died of his injuries.

The suspect(s) left the scene in a vehicle and the case is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the South Lake Tahoe Police Department at 530.542.6100 or Lake Tahoe Secret Witness at 530.541.6800.

South Lake Tahoe man sentenced to four years in prison for domestic battery

The El Dorado County District Attorney's Office has announced that South Lake Tahoe resident Shannon Patrick Johnson, 33, has been sentenced to four years in state prison after being convicted of felony domestic violence.

On April 17, 2018, Johnson was waiting outside his ex-wife's home so that he could confront her, despite being restrained from contacting her due to a 2017 domestic violence conviction. When the ex-wife exited her home to go to work, he began yelling at her. Hoping to calm him down, she got into his car to talk to him.

Two arrested for stealing "bait bike" placed by South Lake Tahoe police

Two South Lake Tahoe men were arrested during a recent "Bait Bike" sting operation conducted in the 3900 block of Pioneer Trail.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) detectives and officers arrested the men after a bike owned by SLTPD was placed in a public place. Within minutes of the bike's placement, it was stolen.

Arrested for Grand Theft were Joel Morris, 27, and Ramon Saldana Madrigal, 36.

"The Angel of Tahoe" assists Tahoe Douglas Rotary's efforts with $100K

Lisa Maloff, the South Shore philanthropist responsible for millions of dollars being distributed throughout the community, has donated $100,000 to Tahoe-Douglas Rotary Club.

The funds will go to the club's efforts to strengthen the South Shore of Lake Tahoe Community and improve humanity world-wide.

Man arrested in South Lake Tahoe after allegedly stabbing roommate

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One man is behind bars and another at Renown Medical Center with life threatening injuries after an altercation Monday between roommates at a Stateline area motel.

At 12:30 p.m. on May 28, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a report of a stabbing at the Mark Twain Motel at 947 Park Avenue. Upon arrival they found a 23-year-old man who had recently moved to South Lake Tahoe with numerous life threatening wounds to his head and leg.

South Lake Tahoe bank robbed

The South Lake Tahoe branch of the Sierra Central Credit Union was robbed on Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m.

At that time, a man wearing a black pinstriped suit walked into the bank and demanded money. He is described as a white male adult with dark complexion and he had a fake beard.

The bank is located in the shopping area at the corner of Ski Run Boulevard and Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

No other details are available at this time. The South Lake Tahoe Police department will be releasing more information when available.

Imprisoned South Lake Tahoe man to be arraigned on charges he killed his 3-week-old son

Murder charges have been filed against a South Lake Tahoe man, almost ten years after the death of his three-week old baby boy.

On November 14, 2008, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) arrived at a home after a call about a baby who was found unconscious. The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department arrived shortly after and transported the infant to the hospital where he was declared deceased. Both the baby's mother and father were present at the time police arrived.

SLTPD honors and promotes during National Police Week

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) held the annual awards ceremony Thursday, honoring the retirement of K9 Tara, the promotion of Jeff Roberson to Sergeant, awards for bravery and for service.

The celebration was started with the National Anthem sung by South Tahoe High School senior Caroline Krolicki and a presentation of the colors by the department's Honor Guard.

Off-duty firefighters save life of man who fell off kayak in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 22-year-old South Lake Tahoe man is alive today thanks to efforts of rescuers who were on the beach of Tahoe Beach Retreat on Thursday, May 10, when he went underwater after being on a kayak.

At 2:46 p.m., a call was made to 911 about a drowning man in the lake. When the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department arrived three minutes later, two off-duty firemen were on the scene already, along with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.

Hundreds attend Mental Health Faire at South Tahoe High

The students at South Tahoe High School (STHS) hosted their first Mental Health Faire on campus for both students and staff during school on Monday, May 7.

A new club on campus started by the El Dorado County chapter of The National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) organized the event, bringing the community and school together to help reduce the stigma of mental illness. Approximately 1 in 5 youth aged 13–18 (21.4%) in the U.S. experiences a severe mental disorder at some point during their life.

National Day of Prayer observed in South Lake Tahoe

The first national call to prayer came in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation. Since then, a call to prayer has continued from President Lincoln’s proclamation of a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” in 1863 to an annual national day of prayer signed by a joint resolution by Congress in 1952 that was signed by President Truman.

Now, the National Day of Prayer is held on the first Thursday in May.

Public's help sought in finding car involved in SLT hit and run

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is looking for a silver Dodge Charger involved in a hit and run on Monday, April 30 at approximately 3:30 p.m.

In a busy Raley's parking lot at the Y in South Lake Tahoe, the charger collided with a white Cadillac SUV then left the scene. The driver was not identified.

SLTPD is seeking the assistance of the public to identify the driver in the silver Dodge Charger. At the time of the hit and run collision, the Raley’s parking lot was busy and likely contained witnesses to this collision.

Human trafficking presentation in South Lake Tahoe

Nationally recognized human trafficking consultant John Vanek will return to South Lake Tahoe for a May 18, 2018 presentation as a guest of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and Live Violence Free.

Vanek, an author and retired lieutenant of the San Jose Police Human Trafficking Task Force, will speak on that date at Sierra Community Church at 6:00 p.m. Vanek is a leadership, collaboration, and anti-human trafficking consultant and speaker working with law enforcement agencies, non-governmental and community-based organizations, academic institutions and private sector companies.

Lake Tahoe Humane Society reorganizes and adds transparency

The Lake Tahoe Humane Society and SPCA organization has elected a new board of directors and all members of the previous board will stepping down.

Michael Dalton will be the new president and is joined by VP of Governance and Compliance Sandra DeLeon, VP of Operations Chantale Hansen, Mariel Berei, secretary and Elizabeth Naylor, treasurer.

Lorna Lefler, Sue Pritchett, and Kim Stephenson, the board who tried to hold things together after the firing of their former executive director, will be stepping down effective immediately.

This has been National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, so what better time to sit down with the women who answer 911 calls in South Lake Tahoe who are the first step in protecting homes, property and people and the unsung heroes of the community.

With an average of 300 to 400 calls going into dispatch each month, staff has to be ready to handle an emergency at every moment through their shift, which in South Lake Tahoe is normally 10 hours long, though they can be up to 12 hours.

With the country’s attitudes and norms about drug use changing, times are even more difficult for our kids.

Accidental drowning ruled as cause of death of woman found in Upper Truckee River

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The cause of death of the Sacramento resident whose body was found in the Upper Truckee River in South Lake Tahoe on April 9, 2017 has been as accidental drowning by the El Dorado County Coroner.

Pamela Suswinsky, 62, was in town with her ex-husband and friend, Henry Suwinsky, and they were staying at the Motel 6 on Lake Tahoe Blvd. Henry said they came to town because she wanted her dog, Wilson, a 150-plus pound Newfoundland to experience snow for the first time.

Wells Fargo Bank in South Lake Tahoe robbed; FBI and Police search for suspect

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is looking for a man who robbed the Wells Fargo Bank at the Y on Emerald Bay Road on Saturday, March 24, 2018.

According to police detectives, the man walked into the bank at 12:57 p.m. and presented a note to the teller advising that a robbery was occurring. The male subject did not present a weapon, and it is unknown at this time if he was armed or not. The suspect left the bank with an undisclosed amount of US currency.

Two homes deal with flooding in South Lake Tahoe

Two houses on Bill Avenue in South Lake Tahoe had to deal with flooding Thursday, March 22.

One home had flooding inside while the second home had flooding occur in their driveway.

Public Works staff are trained to assess scenarios and prioritize disaster mitigation. In today’s instance, the home with the flooding inside of the home was given the highest priority. Once mitigation measures were contained, Public Works staff were able to then focus relief efforts on the residence with the flooding in the driveway.

Law enforcement investigating shots fired; Pioneer Trail shut down

UPDATE 5:15PM: Pioneer Trail is back open after multiple agencies responded to the sounds of gunshots near Temple Bat Yam.

At 11:09 a.m. March 18, South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) dispatch received two simultaneous calls for the same general area, one for the shots fired and another for the activation of a burglar alarm. Since they were so close in proximity, police officers responded as they could be related calls according SLTPD Officer Matt Morrison.

Designate a sober driver on St. Patrick's Day

While the public makes plans to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and other law enforcement agencies are preparing to keep the roadways free of impaired drivers so that everyone can safely enjoy the festivities.

SLTPD is adding two patrols on Saturday to watch for drunk drivers on local roads, and CHP officers will be doing to the same.

South Lake Tahoe man facing charges of assaulting roommate with shotgun

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has arrested a 34-year-old local man on charges stemming from an incident March 12 where he is suspected of firing a shotgun at his roommate.

At about 10:00 p.m. Tuesday, SLTPD dispatch received a 911 call of a possible disturbance and gunshot in the 3700 block of Aspen Avenue. Officers arrived and attempted to located the source of the gunshot. The blocked off Aspen Avenue hear Wildwood Avenue in the process.

Man dies after neighbor accidentally drives over him in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 62-year-old man died Tuesday morning after accidentally being run over by his neighbor.

At 5:14 a.m., the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) was called out to the 1800 block of 13th Street on March 13, 2018 after a man was found on the ground of a neighbor's driveway. According to SLTPD Lt. Shannon Laney, a man was backing out of his driveway to go to 7-11 for his morning newspaper and drove over what he thought was a snow berm. When he returned from the store he found his neighbor on ground and police were called.
