If conditions and weather are favorable, California State Parks may continue understory burning over the next two weeks in Burton Creek and Sugar Pine Point state parks, and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit may continue burning piles on Angora Ridge near Fallen Leaf Lake. Smoke will be present.

The Honorable Richard Glasson will officially retire on October 5, leaving the remainder of his term to be filled.
During the meeting, the commissioners will be recognizing Judge Glasson for 23 years of service to the State and County.
South Lake Tahoe forecast as October gets underway - dry and 70s by the weekend
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/01/2023 - 7:40pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There was a dusting of snow on the mountaintops around the Lake Tahoe Basin this weekend, but there is no more precipitation (rain or snow) in the 7-day forecast. Much of the week will be rather dry along with a general warming trend as the low progresses eastward. Temperatures will see a steady climb through the week after Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. The only wrinkle in the week will be a reinforcing shot of cold air late Monday into Tuesday morning across eastern NV. This will slow the warming trend by a day or so.

The commissioners are set to discuss the financial impacts such an initiative could pose for the county - a loss of millions of dollars.
South Tahoe High earns WASC accreditation through 2029

"I'm proud of the school," said LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Todd Cutler. "I'm really excited about the accreditation and pleased with their designation of six years with a three-year revisit. It shows the hard work that our school put into it."

This will be the first boxing event at the venue, which opened earlier this month and had its first concert, Pitbull, this weekend.

Cold front bringing rain to lake level, chance of snow at upper elevations

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued south of Lake Tahoe, in Mono County.
The best potential for showers, even some high-elevation snow, will be from Saturday into Sunday.
Friday afternoon at Lake Tahoe will see mostly sunny skies with a high near 66. Southwest wind will be around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

It wasn't just El Dorado County's Board of Supervisors meeting this week, but it was also the government meetings of Sonoma County, Saratoga, South San Francisco, El Cerrito, Walnut Creek, Sacramento, Monterey, and the list is growing. The comments have harassed officials and disrupted meetings with hate-filled messages targeting racial and ethnic minorities, the LBGTQ+ community, and the Jewish community.

The suicide rate among people aged 10–24 increased 62 percent from 2007 through 2021. This has deeply impacted individuals, families, and communities.
Every person can play a role in helping to prevent suicide by knowing a few key things and where to get help.

The following statement was issued through public comment at the El Dorado County Supervisors and South Lake Tahoe City Council Meetings on 9/26 and at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Board Meeting on 9/27. A similar statement was made on 9/21 at the Skyland neighborhood meeting regarding the upcoming “fuel break” project in that area.

Around her, a team of five is busy lopping pine boughs and carefully placing timber across a narrow stretch of Saxon Creek in the community of Meyers, mimicking the work of beavers who once lived there. Caller after caller spoke during each of their three-minute time allotments via Zoom, each of them filling the 180 seconds with derogatory comments about those of Jewish faith, as well as profanity.
DCSO asking for public assistance after man speaks to children inappropriately at Target
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/27/2023 - 5:15pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Calif. – The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) responded to the Target store on September 26 on the report of a male adult who had reportedly been making conversations with children and allegedly speaking to them in an inappropriate fashion while inside the store.
These incidents were reported to have occurred on September 20 around 7:15 p.m., and on September 25 at an unknown time.
Sculpture made entirely of trash from Lake Tahoe unveiled at Tahoe Blue Event Center

The art was created by Oregon-based and internationally recognized artists Joel Dean Stockdill and Yustina Salnikova of Building 180.
Prescribed fire operation near Tahoe City brings large plume of smoke
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/27/2023 - 12:26pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a large prescribed fire operation at Burton Creek State Park with a large plume of smoke, causing concern from people around Lake Tahoe. As announced, California State Parks is working on a large hazardous fire fuels project requiring the implementation of prescribed fire within the wildland-urban interface of their park regions.
On Wednesday, 20 acres were ignited and another 20 acres is expected to be ignited on Thursday, and 21 on Friday.
Tahoe Beach Club's Alpenglow Festival raises over $52K to support local artists and Clean Up The Lake

A significant portion, $25,772, was donated to Clean Up The Lake for the launch of their innovative Environmental Dive Center (EDC) in Incline Village, Nev.

The American Lung Association says youth vaping is a significant health issue, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says 99 percent of the e-cigarettes sold in assessed venues in the country contain nicotine.
Expect early morning traffic delays as NDOT installs traffic signal at US50/Warrior Way
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/26/2023 - 4:35pmZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) says drivers should expect early morning travel delays as they install the traffic signal at US50 and Warrior Way in Zephyr Cove.
The early-morning travel delays will take place on Sept. 28.
The new light is being installed to enhance traffic flow and improve safety. Since July, drivers have seen daytime lane and shoulder closures as the base of the signals have been installed and other roadside improvements made.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local resident Nicole Marsel is going through some tough times again. In May of this year, the breast cancer that Nicole beat three years ago returned and metastasized to her entire liver, clavicular lymph node, and bones, she is now in Stage IV. Because of her recent diagnosis, Nicole took a medical leave from the Boys and Clubs of Western Nevada.

Quarry Fire at 1,774 acres and smoke expected to head northeast to the Carson Valley
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/26/2023 - 9:23amThe Quarry Fire in the Stanislaus National Forest was one of many fires in that area started by lightning on September 9. As of Tuesday, September 26, it has burned 1,774 acres of Miwok Ranger District land.
Smoke from the Quarry Fire is visible in the area around the fire and is expected to drift to the northeast to just south of Lake Tahoe and into the Carson Valley south of US50 on Tuesday afternoon. Check out the fire and smoke map at fire.airnow.gov for more information.

City Council to consider ballot measure for taxes to fund affordable housing, snow removal, transit

The Council had asked staff to prepare a report on expenditure plans to show how the City would spend additional revenue generated through a successful ballot measure on housing and/or transit.
They have until June 2024 to decide if they will add a ballot measure to the November 2024 ballot.

Unfortunately, part of the office space that Sierra Child and Family Services have called home for over 10 years was victim to flooding, causing extensive and devastating damage to its operations. Sierra Child and Family Services provides foster care, adoption, and outpatient mental health clinics with wraparound services, and is an essential part of South Lake Tahoe’s ecosystem supporting children and families.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) reported on Monday that they were made aware of at least two new reports of fraud/scams regarding rental properties.

NDOT begins $11M highway project in Gardnervile
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/24/2023 - 4:44pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – Beginning Sept. 25, drivers will see intermittent lane closures as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) launches preliminary construction of a year-long highway improvement project to reconstruct U.S. 395 through downtown Gardnerville.
Beginning Sept. 25 through mid-winter, drivers will see 24/7 single lane closures and lane shifts on small sections of U.S. 395 between First Street and Waterloo Lane. The majority of lane closures will be short in length, with work zones of a few hundred feet.
