Town Hall meetings give public chance to weigh in on Incline Village plans

The Tahoe Transportation District and its partners will be holding four virtual Town Hall meetings this month to discuss the future of Incline Village transportation. The meetings will be for the public to learn more about the regional vision for a more sustainable, safe community, and to better understand Incline Village’s potential for traffic and accessibility improvements, and share solutions to those challenges.

The public is invited to attend and bring forward any ideas on possible solutions, including potential locations for a hub to enhance the village.

Lake Tahoe forecast: Chance of some snow with three small weather systems this week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A series of weather systems may move through the Sierra and western Nevada starting Tuesday into the Lincoln Birthday and Valentine's Day weekend. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno says the first system, Tuesday into Wednesday, is the weakest with the possibility of a stronger storm Thursday into Friday and another for next weekend. Rain, snow, and gusty winds are possible with the later two storms.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care and the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science are asking the public to be on the lookout for sick or dead finches and are asking for people to stop using tray bird feeders at this time.

South Tahoe Middle School wraps up unique Nordic ski season

The South Tahoe Middle School Nordic Ski Team is wrapping up a modified season next week with races on Wednesday and Thursday.

The boys and girls on the team started practicing at the beginning of December with in-person, socially distanced practice two days a week and virtual practice another two days a week. Coaches kept the alphabetical cohorts together.

Father and step-mother arrested on multiple charges after death of 11-year-old El Dorado County boy

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Almost 13 months after 11-year-old Roman Lopez was found deceased in his Placerville home, his father and step-mother have been arrested on multiple criminal charges including child abuse, poisoning and torture.

The Placerville Police Department and El Dorado District Attorney’s office held a press conference Thursday, announcing the arrests of Jordan Piper, 36, and Lindsay Piper, 38, in Calaveras County.

NDOT launches draft state rail plan; Public invited to comment and attend virtual rail summit

The Nevada Department of Transportation is accepting public feedback and hosting a Feb. 16 virtual rail summit to finalize the Nevada State Rail Plan outlining potential new and enhanced railroad facilities to create a more efficient and sustainable statewide transportation network.

Douglas County Sheriffs Office and NHP joins forces to focus on impaired drivers

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) and Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) are conducting high visibility and strong DUI enforcement as part of the Department of Public Safety’s Joining Forces campaign.

DCSO will increase patrol primarily in the Stateline area of the Lake Tahoe basin. Their Joining Forces campaign runs from Feb. 4 through Feb. 15. The NHP campaign is Feb. 4 to Feb. 13.

Monthly and annual gaming reports released by Nevada, South Shore casinos have net loss

STATELINE, Nev. - Nevada’s non-restricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $683,733,423 for the month of December 2020. This amounts to a 35.35 percent decrease compared to December 2019, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,057,539,090, according to the monthly report released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe had a "win" of $15,611,574, down 14.08 percent from December 2019. Most areas in the state saw double-digit losses.

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

New website puts all Lake Tahoe road, weather, traffic information in one spot

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe area cameras, weather, traffic and road condition information has been available to the public on several different websites and apps, but the South Shore Transportation Management Association (SSTMA) recently launched a website that puts it all together in one location.

Recent storms still not enough to bring Sierra snowpack to average

PHILLIPS STATION, Calif. - The second manual snow survey of the season was conducted by the Department of Water Resources (DWR) at Phillips Station on Wednesday. They measured 63 inches of snow with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 17 inches, which is 93 percent of average at that location.

The SWE measures the amount of water contained in the snowpack and is a key component of DWR’s water supply forecast.

"The series of storms helped, but not enough to make up the deficient of last few months," said Sean de Guzman, Chief of DWR’s Snow Surveys and Water Supply Forecasting Section.

South Lake Tahoe has new sidewalk vendor ordinance

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe has added a chapter to its City Code to satisfy requirements by the new Senate Bill 946, a law that went into effect in California January 1 to protect and regulate sidewalk vendors. The bill was created to outline what local governments could do while protecting the local entrepreneurship and economic development opportunities for people to
support themselves and their families, especially to immigrant and low-income communities.

Alpine County graduates to Orange Tier

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Alpine County moved from the Red Tier into the less restrictive Orange Tier in the California Color-Coded County Tier System on Tuesday. They now join Sierra County and Trinity counites in the Orange Tier. Mariposa County is currently in the Red with the other 54 counties in the state in the restrictive Purple Tier.

Each county is assigned to a risk-level based on new cases, positive tests, and health equity.

Full fire response after smoke fills two condos in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to condominiums in the Tahoe Keys Tuesday morning after a smoldering fire sent smoke into two units.

Around 7:45 a.m. February 2, SLTFR responded along with Lake Valley Fire Protection District and JPA ambulances.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund to award $100,000 to South Shore nonprofits

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – As the Tahoe Women’s Community Fund embarks on its 6th year, they have announced that $100,000 will be granted to the South Shore Community this spring. This year, a record number 226 members have become part of the collective giving organization created in 2015.

Thanks to all of the members and a continued generous donation from Ms. Lisa Maloff, for helping raise this $100,000. This year is also exciting as all areas of need will be funded.

LTUSD receives $330,000 to replace diesel bus with electric bus

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. -The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) was recently awarded $330,000 from the California Energy Commission to replace one of its aging diesel school buses with an electric bus. The new bus arrived in December and has been transporting students daily since then.

Public comment changes for South Lake Tahoe City Council meetings

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Starting with its Tuesday, February 2, 2021 meeting, the South Lake Tahoe City Council will no longer have emails read into public record during meetings due to abuse by one or more persons. All emails will continue to be added to the record and distributed to council.

City seeks a vendor to provide food, beverage services at Lakeview Commons

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe is looking for those interested in running the food and beverage concession stand at Lakeview Commons this summer.

Sierra-at-Tahoe had the previous concession at the popular lakefront site but they fulfilled the term of their agreement and chose not extend the option to continue. South Tahoe Standup Paddle took their option of operating water rentals for another three-season term.

Jamie Anderson wins two golds at X Games in Aspen

South Lake Tahoe native and Olympic gold medalist Jamie Anderson entered the 2021 X Games in Aspen as the most decorated female in the history of the games, and has now tied Shaun White with the most gold medals in Slopestyle at seven.

The 30-year-old Anderson, who grew up in Meyers and called Sierra-at-Tahoe her home mountain, won gold in the Jeep Women's Snowboard Slopestyle on Thursday and Pacifico Women's Snowboard Big Air on Sunday. These were her 18th and 19th medals at the annual ski and snowboard competition, her 7th and 8th gold medals.

Lake Wind and Winter Weather advisories in place to start the week in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Another system is moving in from the Pacific Monday, bringing with it high winds and a chance for moderate snow at upper elevations.

To start, a Wind Advisory is in place from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday, February 1 for South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City, Truckee, Markleeville, Stateline, Glenbrook, and Incline Village. Expect winds from the southwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Waves 2 to 3 feet with highest waves along eastern shores.

LTUSD pushes start of cohort K-8 to Thursday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Originally planned for Monday, the move to Phase 2 hybrid structure of learning at Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) for grades TK through 8 will start Thursday, February 4. Monday and Tuesday will be synchronous virtual learning days which allows for teachers to prepare for not only the next storm this week, but also a return to hybrid instruction for Cohort B. Cohort A will start Monday, February 8.

Nordic Center at Lake Tahoe Community College open for classic and skate ski

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With all of the fresh snow on the ground, the timing is perfect for the opening of the Lake Tahoe Community College's (LTCC) Nordic Center. Five to seven kilometers of trails will be maintained and groomed on a regular basis 2-3 times per week for the season, offering views of the forest along with Freel and Jobs Sister peaks.

Tahoe Network of Fire Adapted Communities releases wildfire home retrofit guide

The Tahoe Network of Fire Adapted Communities, along with many other amazing authors and contributors, helped produce the Wildfire Home Retrofit Guide: How to Harden Homes for Wildfire.

The guide includes detailed recommendations on how to retrofit homes to withstand wildfire. Each section contains an explanation of how every home component is vulnerable to wildfire and what can be done to improve that component. It can be downloaded for free HERE.

Shrimply Blue: Restoring Lake Tahoe’s clarity one dog at a time

How the new non-profit organization “Shrimply Blue” is inviting dogs and their human sidekicks to restore lake clarity one dog treat at a time is the topic of the next UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) Winter Science Speaks lecture on Thursday, February 18, at 12 noon.

TERC has identified invasive Mysis as a key contributor to clarity decline. By removing the surprisingly nutritious Mysis and transforming them into premium dog treats, Shrimply Blue is creating a regenerative system for sustainable lake restoration.

Winter Storm Watch issued for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just as the region shovels out the remnants of Winter Storm Orlena, another storm is headed to the Lake Tahoe Basin and Sierra.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Watch for South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Stateline, and Incline Village for possible heavy snow Monday afternoon through Tuesday night.

Heavy snow is possible. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches in the Tahoe Basin, 10 to 18 inches above 7000 feet, with up to 2 feet along the Sierra crest possible. Winds could gust as high as 70 mph over the high Sierra.

The board elected Nevada governor’s appointee Mark Bruce as chairperson and Placer County Supervisor Cindy Gustafson as vice-chair.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Along with the tempting snow-covered terrain created by the recent storm comes a reminder from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO). They are reminding residents and visitors to practice caution when participating in outdoor activities in the snow and winter weather.

Sundance Film Festival to show movie from South Lake Tahoe filmmaker

From South Lake Tahoe to the Sundance Film Festival, a movie by local film maker Manuel Crosby is making a surprising journey after being created over coffee with a friend at the kitchen table.

Crosby was in his hometown of Valley Springs on a break from USC Film School and hanging out with his friend Darren Knapp. They got to taking about used cars, and what does the new owner really know about the car’s history. In just a few months the two had completed the script to “First Date,” a thriller, dark comedy. crime movie meets high school coming-of-age romance.
