LTCC soccer teams win 2023 Golden Valley Conference titles; men's team wins first round playoffs
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/18/2023 - 6:28pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a big day for Lake Tahoe Community College's (LTCC) soccer teams on Saturday when they both played in the California Community College Athletic Association's 3C2A Northern California Regionals.
This year is the first time since 2009 that a college has had both the men's and women's teams win the 2023 Golden Valley Conference, sending them to the postseason.
Piper Arnold of South Lake Tahoe nominated for 2024 Youth Olympic Winter Games team

Nominations include athletes aged 15 to 18, who qualified based on selection criteria.

The Freeride World Tour is a world-class, international snowsports competition - where more than 40 skiers and snowboarders will perform tricks on natural, ungroomed terrain for the ‘World Champion’ title.
Winter Weather Advisory in place for upper elevations around Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/17/2023 - 3:40pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for elevations above 6,500 ft from 4 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday.
Snow is expected above 6500 feet with total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches, up to 8 inches above 7000 feet, and up to 1 to 2 feet above 8000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph, with ridge top gusts up to 95 mph.
The advisory is in place from 4 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday.
Plan on slippery road conditions. Strong winds could cause tree damage and blowing snow.
New public health officer for El Dorado County is physician, inventor, author, and decorated federal official
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/17/2023 - 2:38pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Dr. Matthew Minson was appointed the county’s public health officer and local registrar for vital statistics during the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday.
The board unanimously approved Dr. Minson to fill the position left vacant by Dr. Nancy Williams who retired in June.

SR88 to close on Friday as Caltrans crews blowup boulders that fell overnight
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/17/2023 - 12:13pmALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is working on SR88 between Crystal Springs Road and Deep Canyon due to two borders falling on the roadway overnight.
Emergency traffic controls went into effect at 8 a.m. Friday and motorists may be experiencing delays. Caltrans will temporarily close SR88 from Crystal Springs Road to Deep Canyon at 1:15 p.m. so maintenance crews can perform blasting and cleanup operations to remove the boulders from the roadway.
This full road closure is expected to remain in effect for 30 to 45 minutes.

Newberry has been serving as vice president of mountain operations at Heavenly Mountain Resort since 2021 and started his career at Kirkwood in 1999 on ski patrol.
With more than 20 years of industry experience amassed in South Lake Tahoe, Newberry brings an acute understanding of complex mountain operations to Kirkwood. Since his ski patrol days, Newberry has remained focused on mountain operations and safety.

South Tahoe High's Lyla Landy wins state title for Cross Country; Girls team places third

Not only did the boys' tennis team bring home the top trophy for 3A of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA), but so did the boys' soccer team.
Now the focus is on Sophomore Lyla Landy. She took the state title for Cross-Country, beating the field of 57 runners, leading from the first 1.5k mark through the end. Her time of 19:42 beat the second-place finisher, Tahoe Truckee's Sidney McInosh.
NDOT no longer considering incorporating lane reductions on US50 project
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/16/2023 - 10:07pmCARSON CITY, Nev. - Plans by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to create a road diet along US50 between Stateline and SR28 have been changed after the Transportation Board's meeting this week. Plans for reducing the four lanes to three lanes, with middle turn lanes and bike lanes to address safety concerns and access have been a hot topic. While most have stated they want safer roads, they didn't like the lane reduction plans.
California state scientists on strike, including those who protect Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/16/2023 - 9:27pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first strike in California of state-employed scientists is taking place this week, and scientists in South Lake Tahoe are participating on Friday, November 17.
Across California, state-employed scientists are engaging in a collective fight for equitable wages. Their union contract expired three years ago and the sides are at an impasse.
The local scientists that may be taking part in the strike, should they choose to, are from Lahontan, Tahoe Conservancy, State Parks, and CalFire, and include those who provide the science to protect Lake Tahoe.
First human death from West Nile Virus report in El Dorado County in 2023
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/16/2023 - 4:17pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials confirmed the first human death related to neuroinvasive West Nile Virus this year. The death occurred at the end of October. The individual was over the age of 55 and resided on the West Slope of El Dorado County.
In California in 2023 there have been ten deaths to West Nile Virus out of 317 human cases. In 2022 there were just 120 human cases in California with the five-year average being 147.4 cases annually.
USFS wraps up restoration work at Incline Meadow for winter

USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) crews have winterized the project area and work is scheduled to resume next summer. The final phase of the meadow restoration work planned for 2024 includes backfilling the large channel that formed in the meadow after the man-made lake was drained and removing piles and berms to promote water connectivity throughout the meadow.
Funding approved for new Cal Tahoe JPA ambulance service building in South Lake Tahoe

The JPA had been searching for a home for ambulances and staff and after a search of available buildings that would be centrally located, the county-owned building at 3066 Lake Tahoe Blvd. was chosen.

Lake Tahoe man pleads guilty to lewdness and sexual assault charges

Zachary Nance was 35 years old at the time of his December 2022 arrest at his McFaul Way home.

South Tahoe High Boys Soccer celebrates state NIAA 3A title
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/15/2023 - 1:25pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High School (STHS) Boys Soccer team is celebrating its victory at the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) 3A State playoffs that left them alone at the top as the 2023 State Champions.
The NIAA Nevada State 3A t was one earned after a tough tournament with the final game against SLAM Nevada on Saturday, one the Vikings won 2-1. Their opponent from Henderson, SLAM, is the Sports Leadership and Management of Nevada, a charter school.
There are 23 players for the STHS Vikings, ten of them being seniors.

The planned power outage may affect the church, but Bread and Broth will have a generator in place so they can provide dinner to the expected 200 people attending.

The actions were the result of a Minor Decoy operation which included minors under the direct supervision of department agents that attempted to purchase alcohol from 14 retail licensees in South Lake Tahoe.

Ben Fagen Designs wins annual Day in Paradise Duck Races

The event, held along the Truckee River in Tahoe Paradise Park, raises money to help the Optimists with their local youth projects. They will also be opening their Christmas Tree lot in South Lake Tahoe after Thanksgiving.
Ben Fagen of Ben Fagen Designs and his associate, architect Natalia Wieczorek, chose Tahoe Magic as the recipient of the $1,000 winnings. Tahoe Magic is a local non-profit that helps families in need when they need it most.

An upper low lingering along the California coast will eventually move across portions of California and Nevada late this week with cooler temperatures, said the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Periods of mountain snow showers and valley rain showers are expected with travel impacts will be possible mid to late week for the Sierra passes in heavier snow showers.
Lake Tahoe Community College celebrates new entrance, main building remodel

In 2014, South Lake Tahoe voters approved Measure F, a $55 million bond measure to modernize and upgrade technology, repair aging facilities and systems, and improve educational programs and student learning environments.
Mt. Tallac High School and Elevated Digital Learning Academy open doors for Showcase

The two schools now operate out of the old Al Tahoe Elementary School building on Lyons Avenue in South Lake Tahoe. The Boys and Girls Club moved into their new home next door, leaving the classrooms and grounds ready for a metamorphosis. The walls have been painted, and the rooms are now full of new desks and tables, and comfortable learning areas. There are signs of encouragement throughout the school.
Group to have rally before next Douglas County School District

SLT planning commissioners to hear annexation plans for Upper Truckee Marsh area
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/11/2023 - 12:02amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a proposal to pre-zone 90 parcels currently located within what is called the "City Sphere of Influence" in El Dorado County so they can become part of the city limits through annexation.
These parcels are part of five annexation scenarios presented during the June 6 South Lake Tahoe City Council public hearing. The council voted to pursue the "Cleanup Annexation Scenario" which encompasses the Heavenly California Base, the Tahoe Valley Campground, and parcels located in the Upper Truckee Marsh adjacent to the City’s jurisdictional boundary.

Park Heavenly (https://www.parkheavenly.com/) shows parking areas, both free and reserved spots at Cal Lodge in South Lake Tahoe, and transportation options on an interactive map.
"Reserve N Ski" parking reservations are required on weekends (Saturday - Sunday) and Holiday/Peak Periods at the California Base Area parking lot until noon. A flat fee of $20 will be required for cars with three or fewer passengers and it must be paid for in advance online.
City of South Lake Tahoe starts "Name A Snowplow" contest

The contest seeks to name 10 snowplows that will be in service for the 2023/2024 winter season. The purpose of the contest is to celebrate winter and to recognize the hard work and dedication of our Public Works Department.
