SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Most residents of the Lake Tahoe Basin can't wait to start their spring chores around the yard, and the forecast shows they can soon get started (who knew bagging pine needles could be exciting?). The snow will melt quickly this week as a robust ridge of high pressure builds over the west. This pushes high temperatures into the 80s for lower valleys and mid-60s to around 70 for mountain valleys from Thursday through the end of April, if not the first day or two of May.
This will be a significant test of the snowpack and associated snowmelt.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barbara Parina remembers March 5, 2023, very well.
"The chandelier was swaying and there were cracking noises coming from the roof," said Barbara, the owner of South Lake Tahoe's Sidestreet Boutique. She knew it was more than nearby avalanche control cannons but was not exactly sure what was happening. She got the customers out and closed up.
At 10:58 p.m. that evening, the cameras showed her what was happening - the roof above Sidestreet Boutique collapsed and the sprinkler system cracked, sending massive amounts of water into the store.
