Letter: Against shocking Measure N, supporting Jinkens and Roberts

I’ve lived in South Lake Tahoe my whole life. I got my first job in a local restaurant at 14. Through hard work, more than 40 hours per week for many years, I managed to make a living. My husband and I built a life here with two children and a granddaughter. We saved up and bought a home 32 years ago.

We were shocked to read about the Vacancy Tax. It’s supposed to target second homeowners but actually says every single homeowner in the city will have to sign under penalty of perjury that they live in their home 183 days, each year. If we don’t, we’ll be fined $6,000!

Letter: Kevin Kiley refuses to debate Jessica Morse

Jessica Morse, running for our CD-3 Representative for US Congress, is eager to debate our current Congressman Kevin Kiley---- anywhere and any time.

Representative Kevin Kiley, however, has declined the invitation to a candidates' forum sponsored by the venerable League of Women Voters of five counties (Nevada, El Dorado, Placer, Plumas, and Sacramento), which represents 350,000 people.

Letter: Did they realize the Denny’s lights were off?

Opponents of Measure N argue that “now is not the time” to take action to protect our community, and that instead we should preserve the status quo. But this argument fails to grasp the reality of our situation: the status quo is a continually increasing rate of second home ownership, which will hollow out our community if it continues unchecked. We must take action to preserve what we love about South Lake Tahoe before it’s too late. That’s why I’ll be voting Yes on Measure N.
