SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The sun is out, the snow has melted, and now is the time to get out and enjoy summer on your National Forest lands! The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) along with partners at Heavenly Mountain Resort, invites the public to Hike with a Ranger beginning Friday, July 26, 2024. Hikes take place every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the top of the Heavenly Gondola. The guided hikes last approximately one hour and will continue every weekend through September 29, weather permitting.

TAHOE CITY, Calif. - Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC) turned Lake Tahoe pink this weekend at the 20th annual Skate the Lake presented by LivOn Labs. 185 participants joined the nonprofit in the push for prevention, raising nearly $70,000 for B4BC’s education, prevention, and survivorship programs while supporting their mission of a healthy, active lifestyle, and early detection as the best means of breast cancer prevention.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) has announced a new board chairperson, Joseph Herold of Zephyr Cove, Nev. Joe is a retired human resources executive who worked in the energy and semiconductor industries. He also worked as an organization and leadership development consultant for several clients, including The Venice Family Clinic, a non-profit medical center serving the homeless and underserved communities in west Los Angeles.

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Carnelian Bay West Beach and Patton Landing Beach will both remain closed after a sewer line break near Carnelian Bay dumped untreated sewage into Lake Tahoe on Thursday, July 18.

A private contractor struck the North Tahoe Public Utility District’s (NTPUD) main sewer export pipeline, resulting in 125,000 gallons of untreated sewage being discharged, 85,000 of those gallons ending up in the lake.

TAHOMA, Calif. - A 53-year-old man from Hayward, Calif. died Monday afternoon after becoming pinned between two vehicles in the 7000 block of Lake Blvd., Tahoma.

On July 22, 2024, at approximately 12:53 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers from South Lake Tahoe were dispatched to a strip mall parking lot where they found a victim crushed between a truck tractor and trailer combination and a Ford F450.

MONDAY UPDATE: - A man who had been reported missing on Sunday afternoon in Topaz Lake was found deceased on Monday morning. On July 22, 2024, at approximately 9:45 a.m., Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Marine units and dive team, along with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, located and recovered 51-year-old Rodney Mitchell of Reno, Nev.

Although drowning is believed to be the cause of death, the decedent was taken to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s office for a definitive cause of death.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What started as a dream in 1984 became reality in 1991 when the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Demonstration Garden held its grand opening after a year of construction. Designed with the collaboration of several agencies, groups, and individuals, the garden was created on seven acres to showcase attractive native and adapted plants while using conservation techniques to address water quality concerns. Several gazebos and sitting areas were added with tree and plant descriptions along a pathway that meandered through the displays.

6:10PM UPDATE: No lanes are currently blocked according to CHP, "all lanes opened."

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A mudslide about 100 feet wide and three inches deep has crossed over US50 west of Strawberry. Along with the mud, branches, and other debris also in the slide.

As of 4:45 p.m., Caltrans is sending equipment to clear the mud from Placerville with an estimated time of their arrival in one hour.

Caltrans signage is warning people to not go through the mud and traffic is backing up.

8:00PM UPDATE: There have been a few more earthquakes centered in the middle of Lake Tahoe this evening. According to USGS, there was a 3.4 magnitude just after 8 p.m., followed by 1.5 at 8:05 p.m., and a 2.8 at 8:19 p.m. The University of Nevada reports several small ones during the day, all under 1.0 magnitude.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Sierra Nevada is no stranger to seismic activity and Lake Tahoe is on the western rim of the Basin and Range Province, one of the most seismically active regions in the United States.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - If you were living on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe August 26–27, 1980, you most likely watched the planted bomb detonate inside Harveys Lake Tahoe. The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is holding its next Tahoe History Talks on the Beach on Tuesday, July 23, and the topic is "I Got Bombed at Harvey's." That saying was quickly put onto t-shirts and sold through South Lake Tahoe.

CARNELIAN BAY, Calif. - North Tahoe Public Utility District (NTPUD), Placer County, and the California Tahoe Conservancy issued a health advisory for the Carnelian Bay area of Lake Tahoe following a spill of approximately 85,000 gallons of untreated sewage that reached the lake Thursday evening.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Users of the popular multi-use paved trails throughout the Tahoe Basin and Truckee will find new messages stenciled in chalk along the trails encouraging trail etiquette. The messages, tested last summer on the Legacy Trail in Truckee and later on the Pope-Baldwin Trail in South Lake Tahoe, encourage users to “share the path,” “keep right, pass left,” and also include more tongue-in-cheek reminders like “we put a man on the moon, surely we can share this trail.” Messages have been stenciled in English and Spanish.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev.-A recent graduate from Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) was honored during last week's American Century Championship with the $10,000 Gene Upshaw Memorial Scholarship Fund Award.

The annual award is presented during the celebrity golf tournament in honor of Upshaw who played in 15 of the events, then had to withdraw from the 2008 American Century Championship as he became sick, and died of pancreatic cancer not long after, in October 2008. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's that time of year again when the California Highway Patrol hosts the first of the season's Coffee With A Cop. Join them, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office at Cuppa Tahoe on Tuesday, July 23 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Taste of Gold, the Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation’s annual fundraiser, is the can't-miss event of the Tahoe summer. It will be held on August 10, 2024, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Enjoy an evening under the pines on Lake Tahoe Community College’s beautiful mountain campus with award-winning California wines and a sampling of tasty treats from Lake Tahoe and area restaurants. Proceeds from the event directly help students by supporting programs, including the Lake Tahoe College Promise, Student Success Grants, and the emergency book fund.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – This year marks the 37th anniversary of the Great Gatsby Festival, a multi-day living history and interpretive festival held at the Tallac Historic Site each year. The Great Gatsby Festival is a living history event, celebrating the life and times of the Prohibition Era.

The event was temporarily paused from 2020 - 2022 and was revived in 2023, through a collaborative partnership between the Great Basin Institute, Valhalla Tahoe, and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

Slow Food Lake Tahoe is once again hosting a tour of beautiful high Sierra food gardens in Truckee! They will be visiting gardens of all shapes and sizes from a 4-season grow dome to a single-family backyard veggie garden. The tour begins in a Truckee neighborhood and then proceeds, caravan style, to a variety of home gardens and ends at the Slow Food Gardens in the Truckee River Regional Park for light refreshments.

Fried, roasted, or boiled, there's no wrong way to enjoy this hot-weather crop. Okra can be divisive for its slimy texture. While some are off-put by this, others find its unique texture perfect for roasting or frying. Quick roasting and dry heat can help minimize the sliminess.  It also has a peach-like fuzz on the exterior and a mild, somewhat grassy taste. Okra is commonly used in soups, canning, frying, roasting, or boiling.
