High-speed pursuit from Meyers into Douglas County leads to arrest of homicide suspect

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - An Arizona man wanted in connection with a homicide was arrested Thursday after a high speed chase that reached speeds over 100 mph.

A white Cadillac passed by a license plate reader in Meyers that alerted law enforcement the vehicle was associated with a man wanted for homicide. The California Highway Patrol began pursuit and called ahead to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office at 2:44 p.m. to let them know to expect the vehicle. It had turned east at the intersection of SR89 and SR 88.

Lake Tahoe boat inspections on pause due to smoke

Watercraft inspection stations at Lake Tahoe that help to prevent the introduction of aquatic invasive species (AIS) are closed until further notice due to hazardous air quality and wildfire precautions, according to Lake Tahoe Watercraft Inspection Program agencies. Watercraft inspection stations will remain closed until it is deemed safe for personnel to return to work, they said.

South Lake Tahoe issues local emergency proclamation due to Caldor Fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. The City of South Lake Tahoe is outside the evacuation warning and order areas for the Caldor Fire, but they issued a local emergency proclamation Thursday to leverage federal and state resources in response to the Caldor Fire.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District postpones start of school year due to Caldor Fire evacuations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the evacuation warnings for the Caldor Fire moving to the Christmas Valley area of Lake Tahoe, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has postponed the start of the school year.

Since students live in both the evacuation warning and order areas, school with now start on Tuesday, September 7, 2021.

LTUSD said in a statement the health and safety of all families in the community is at the forefront, especially those that live in areas affection by the warning and order.

STPUD asks customers to conserve water during fire emergencies

There are no evacuation orders currently in place for the Tahoe Basin. Many in the community are packing their emergency supply kit and coming up with an evacuation plan to prepare in case of fire. The South Tahoe Public Utility District reminds customers to turn off irrigation systems and outdoor hoses in the event of an evacuation.

New evacuation warning issued for Christmas Valley and Hope Valley

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Calfire has extended the evacuation order and evacuation warning information for the Caldor Fire and includes part of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

An evacuation warning has now been issued for Christmas Valley from SR89 west to Echo Summit, SR89 due west to Watershed Ridge and south to the Amador/El Dorado County line, SR89 south from Luther Pass Road to Picketts Junction on SR88, and west on SR88 to Kirkwood.

El Dorado County opens Local Assistance Center for those affected by Caldor Fire

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County officials today announced the scheduled opening a Local Assistance Center (LAC) this Friday, August 27 to provide County and State services, information and resource referrals to individuals, families and businesses impacted by the Caldor fire.

“In these times of natural disaster, it can be overwhelming to know where to turn for help,” said Board of Supervisors chair, John Hidahl. “The LAC is a one-stop location to help our residents start the process of rebuilding their lives and livelihoods.”

Caldor Fire burning southwest of Lake Tahoe now 136,643 acres and remains 12% contained

The Caldor Fire in El Dorado County has been mapped at 136,643 acres and is 12 percent contained as of Thursday, August 26 at 7:00 a.m. It was remapped overnight from the air.

Throughout the evening hours and overnight, the fire remained active in the
Northeast with most growth occurring in Divisions I and J. Critical fuel conditions, steep and rugged terrain still present a challenge for crews. Firefighters are continuing with the firing operations in Divisions A and W to help strengthen control lines. A division map can be seen above.

Phish moves Lake Tahoe concert to Shoreline Amphitheater

Due to the hazardous conditions caused by the Caldor Fire, Phish has announced their two Lake Tahoe shows will not take place as planned. Originally scheduled to be at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena on August 31 and September 1, they will now play those two shows at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, Calif. on the same dates.

Tickets for the Lake Tahoe shows will automatically be honored on their respective days at Shoreline. Seating at these shows will be general admission, and please note different timing: 5:30 p.m. Doors Open/ 7:00 p.m. Show.

COVID-19 cases for Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There have been 41 new cases of COVID-19 in El Dorado County since yesterday.

Pollock Pines, Camino, Kyburz - 664 cases - +2 - The 14-day new case rate is 57 with 420 per 100,000 residents.
El Dorado Hills - 2785 cases - +16 - The 14-day new case rate is 184 with 433 per 100,000 residents.
Diamond Springs, El Dorado - 610 cases - +5 - The 14-day new case rate is 58 with 617 per 100,000 residents.
North County - 64 cases - +5 - The 14-day new case rate is 72 with 497 per 100,000 residents.

Caldor Fire evening update: 126,566 acres and 12 percent contained

The Caldor Fire grew 384 acres in size during the day Wednesday and it is now 126,566 acres and 12 percent contained. Today the Northeast section of the fire continued to grow, adjacent to Highway 50 and Twin Bridges, due to up-canyon winds and spotting. Critical fuel conditions, steep and rugged terrain still present a challenge for firefighters.

Overall, the fire experienced slight growth throughout the day while firefighters worked to strengthen containment and control lines.

Caldor Fire - Next couple of days are critical

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - With the weather changing over the next two days, firefighters working the Caldor Fire southwest of Lake Tahoe will have good conditions on gaining containment on the 126,000+ acre fire.

El Dorado County VHRs now have 500 foot clustering rule

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - In order to strike a balance between quality of life for those living in El Dorado County and those who own second homes and rent them out to tourists, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the first reading of an updated vacation home rental (VHR) ordinance.

The updated provision prohibits new vacation rentals within 500 feet, measured from property line to property line, of a legally existing vacation home rental.

Caldor Fire burning southwest of Lake Tahoe now 122,980 acres, 11% contained

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The Caldor Fire burning southwest of South Lake Tahoe is now 122,980 acres and there is a 11 percent containment line. The fire was active in the early portion of the day due to the inversion layer lifting rapidly. The Northeast side of the fire saw the most movement towards US50 and Twin Bridges aided by up canyon winds and spotting distances up to a half mile away. In areas that were in alignment with winds, passive crown fire runs were seen.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Food Bank will be in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, August 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The announcement is late as they weren't sure they could be able make it to town due to the Caldor Fire.

The food truck sets up in the parking lot of St. Theresa Catholic Church at 1041 Lyons Avenue in South Lake Tahoe from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. each fourth Wednesday. They bring fresh fruits and vegetables.

There is no information needed to get food.

FDA officially approves Pfizer two-dose COVID-19 vaccine

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially approved Pfizer-BioNTech’s two-dose COVID-19 vaccine for individuals 16 years of age and older. The vaccine also continues to be available under emergency use authorization (EUA) for individuals 12 through 15 years of age and for the administration of a third dose in certain immunocompromised individuals. The Pfizer vaccine will now be called Comirnaty (koe-mir’-na-tee).

Eric Church outdoor concerts this weekend canceled at Lake Tahoe, rescheduled for 2022

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Eric Church concerts at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena this weekend have been canceled due to smoke and unhealthy conditions from the Caldor Fire.

The concert has already been rescheduled for August 27 and 28, 2022.

"Due to public safety and the fires in the area, we are sorry to announce that we must postpone Eric Church with Paul Cauthen at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys scheduled for this Friday and Saturday, August 27 & 28," said the notice.

All tickets will be honored in 2022.

Nevada State Parks close due to smoke but expect to reopen Friday

Nevada State Parks has been continuously monitoring the Caldor Fire, currently burning southwest of the Lake Tahoe Basin. The fire has produced increasingly hazardous air quality for Northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe Basin. The air quality forecasts predict a continuation of these hazardous conditions through the upcoming week.

In an abundance of caution for our staff, visitors, and public safety personnel working to battle this fire, Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park will close, beginning Monday August 23, 2021 and is anticipated to re-open Friday August 27, 2021, depending on conditions.

Information boards about Caldor Fire placed around South Shore

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caldor Fire press information officers (PIOs) have started to set up information boards (traplines) for fire information. The boards have maps and recent recaps.

USFS and the PIOs will change the boards once a day.

They are located in the parking lot of TJ Maxx in South Lake Tahoe at the Y, Holiday Market in Meyers, both Safeway stores, MontBleu Casino, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District stations 21, 24 and 25 (top of Kingsbury, Zephyr Cove, Glenbrook) and at the evacuation center set up at the Douglas County Community Center.

Caldor Fire morning update: 117,704 acres and 9% contained

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The Caldor Fire is now 117,704 acres in size and firefighters have a nine percent containment line at the "heel" of the fire. Overall, activity at the Caldor Fire through the night remained moderate with some significant terrain-driven runs in Division W. The up-canyon southwest winds decreased and moderate humidity recovery allowed firefighters to engage in direct control tactics while advancing indirect line construction.

33,056 residents in the region remain evacuated from their homes.

LTUSD and DCSD develop plans for smoky school days

With unprecedented smoke and unhealthy air filling the Lake Tahoe Basin, two area school districts have created policies to deal with students and school days when there is bad air quality.

Douglas County School District (DCSD) didn't have a plan in place for the first day of school Monday, with with AQI levels around 400 PM2.5, students were kept indoors. But by the end of day Superintendent Keith Lewis sent a letter to parents.

Several South Lake Tahoe events postponed due to smoke and the Caldor Fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local organizers have canceled or postponed events that were to be held outdoors in the South Lake Tahoe area this week. The cause is the Caldor Fire burning to the southwest of Lake Tahoe, and the heavy smoke generating from the 100,000+ acre fire.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The Caldor Fire is now 9 percent contained and has burned 114,166 acres since starting during the evening of August 14. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The fire was active in the early portion of the day due to the inversion layer lifting rapidly which fed the fire. As the day progressed the weather improved which allowed crews to continue building containment lines throughout various areas of the fire.

Fundraiser in Sparks to raise money for El Dorado Community Foundation fire victim fund

There will be a fundraiser for the El Dorado Community Foundation's Caldor Fire victim relief fund in Sparks, Nevada on Tuesday, August 24 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. It will be held at the Rail City Ale House located at 2121 Victorian Avenue.

Attendees will get special wines paired with Prosciutto Wrapped Honey Lemon Shrimp, Tossed Mesclun Salad with Balsamic Dressing, Grille French Pork Chop with Spinach Dijon sauce over Portobella Mushroom Risotto, and Molten Lava Cake with Raspberries. Tickets are $68 per person and ten percent of funds raised will go to the Foundation.

Three South Lake Tahoe residents facing federal charges along with man from Texas

During a coordinated law enforcement operation in South Lake Tahoe and Stateline on August 10, 11 people were arrested including four on federal drug and gun trafficking charges.

A federal grand jury returned three indictments on Aug. 19, charging four of those individuals with drug and gun crimes committed in and around South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe hitting record amounts of PM2.5 in the air leading to harmful air quality

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Smoke from the Caldor Fire has been pouring into the Lake Tahoe Basin during the past week, but Sunday night saw record breaking numbers for bad air quality.

Smoke from wildfires contains chemicals, gases and fine particles that can harm health. The greatest hazard comes from breathing fine particles in the air, which can reduce lung function, worsen asthma and other existing heart and lung conditions, and cause coughing, wheezing and difficulty breathing.

Monday morning Caldor Fire update: 106,562 acres and 5% contained

The Caldor Fire in El Dorado County southwest from Lake Tahoe is now measured at 106,562 acres and is 5 percent contained

Overnight downslope winds, low temperatures, and moderate humidity levels
aided in slowing fire spread. Crews continue to encounter heavy down and
drought-stressed fuels that are extremely receptive to spotting.

Widespread haze, smoke and poor air quality forecast for week ahead in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Expect seasonable temperatures with typical afternoon and evening breezes through the middle of the week, with lighter breezes and some warming possible late in the week and for next weekend.

Westerly winds will continue to push wildfire smoke with degraded air quality into the Sierra and western Nevada. No rain is in sight through next week.

Caldor Fire News: 104,309 acres, 5% contained

The Caldor Fire is now mapped at 104,309 acres and is now 5 percent contained.

The operational boundary of the Caldor Fire will be moving out to SR89 on Monday morning but there will be no new evacuation warnings or orders moving with it.

The eastern operation objective line was at Strawberry Creek, but with the fire moving in Kyburz, Calfire moved it out.

"We don't want to be fighting fire from 89," said fire managers during their evening recap Sunday. "We're just giving people room to fight the fire. We have no intention of letting the fire get to 89."

Preparing, planning and keeping informed key during time of emergencies

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the Caldor Fire looming to the west of us, the Dixie Fire to the north, and the recent Tamarack Fire to the south, its time to prepare should such an event come into the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Caldor Fire at almost 100,000 acres, 0% contained, 328 structures destroyed

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The Caldor Fire burning southwest of Lake Tahoe is now 98,149 acres and remains 0 percent contained.

The Caldor Fire remained active again throughout the night, particularly in the northeast section of the fire. Vegetation and timber is igniting very easily and spotting continues to occur ahead of the fire perimeter.

There was a spot fire late in the day Saturday on the north side of US50 near Kyburz and that has grown to about 400 acres. Firefighters will be prioritizing this spot fire today.

DIerks Bentley show at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena canceled

Due to public safety and the fires in the Lake Tahoe area, the Dierks Bentley show at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena originally scheduled for Sunday has been postponed.

His show in 2020 was canceled due to COVID-19, and the August 22 was a rescheduled date.

Caldor Fire now at 90,107 acres

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The Caldor Fire is expected to push east and north through tonight, according to CalFire. It has now burned 90,107 acres and remains 0 percent contained.

The ever-changing incident made some advancement to the east and northeast today, along with some action on the western edge near Jenkison Lake south of Pollock Pines, and south near Amador County.

As of 7:00 p.m. Saturday, 13,114 structures are threatened, 270 have been destroyed and 15 damaged.

City of South Lake Tahoe sets up emergency operation center to work with Caldor Fire command

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Basin continues to fill up with smoke and ash from the Caldor Fire burning to the southwest. Aircraft is currently mapping the fire from the air and new numbers on how big the fire is should be available by about 7:00 p.m.

Caldor Fire: 82,444 acres, 0% contained - 245 structures destroyed

The fire perimeter of the Caldor Fire increased overnight, and so far 82,444 acres have burned and there is 0 percent contained.

Lake Tahoe's state parks on the West Shore close

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the Caldor Fire burning in El Dorado County with forecast erratic wind patterns, California State Parks have completely closed all state parks on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe until further notice.

These parks include Emerald Bay State Park, D.L. Bliss State Park, and Sugar Pine Point State Park.

The complete closure of parks also means the day use areas, campgrounds, historic house museum tours and visitor centers will remain closed until further notice.

Douglas County opens Community Center for Caldor Fire evacuees

The Douglas County Community and Senior Center is currently opening its doors as a precautionary measure at the request of El Dorado County to take in evacuees from the Caldor Fire.

At this time, the fire has not reached Lake Tahoe or Douglas County but evacuees from Echo Summit and Twin Bridges are being told to head east to Lake Tahoe where there are no evacuation centers.

The Red Cross will be arriving at the Community Center to assist any evacuees starting at 8:00 a.m. on August 21, 2021.

Caldor Fire mapped Friday at 75,845 acres, 0% contained

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The Caldor Fire burning southwest of Lake Tahoe is now 75,845 acres big, and 0 percent contained.

There was an increase in fire activity due to wind shifts in a southerly direction. The main fire spread was in a northeasterly direction towards Highway 50. Fire-damaged timber continues to cause rollout and ember cast that is aiding spotting distances up to a half-mile long in all areas. Due to very dry receptive fuel beds, the vegetation is igniting easily throughout the fire area.

Caldor Fire evacuation orders and warnings expanding

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The evacuation boundaries for the Caldor Fire have expanded to include a warning for Echo Summit and Twin Bridges.

As of 4:30 p.m. Friday:

Evacuation Warnings

• From the evacuation order line in Twin Bridges east to the Echo Summit
and from Highway 50 south to the Amador and Alpine County lines and
north to the Placer County line.
• Dry Lakes Section: This section is north of Wentworth Springs Road up to
the Placer County line and the remaining section of El Dorado County
south of Placer County to Loon Lake.

US50 from Meyers to Sly Park closed in both directions due to Caldor Fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to heavy smoke from the Caldor Fire, and emergency crews on the roads, US50 is closing from the Meyers roundabout to Sly Park Road this afternoon. It will be closing in both directions by approximately 4:30 p.m.

Please plan ahead and use an alternate route. Both SR88 and I80 are open at this time.

Sample the Sierra canceled for 2021 due to fires, COVID19 and vendor staff shortages

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Sample the Sierra, South Lake Tahoe’s annual farm-to-fork festival originally scheduled Sept. 18, 2021, has been cancelled by event organizers.

Planners made the difficult decision based on numerous factors: recent impacts on businesses and the public from the Caldor Fire in El Dorado Country, a spike in COVID cases due to the Delta variant, and staffing concerns among numerous restaurant partners. All tickets will be fully refunded.

Live at Lakeview cancels show, looks forward to 2022

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In response to the recent spike of active COVID-19 cases, Live at Lakeview producers continue to place events on hold, choosing to value the health and well-being of the community over profit.
The September 2nd show that producers were hopeful would be possible, has officially been cancelled.

Originally scheduled to begin on Thursday, August 5, 2021, the popular Live at Lakeview Sumer Music Series will remain on hold until summer of 2022.
