Power outage in Al Tahoe neighborhood

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is currently a power outage in the Al Tahoe neighborhood and surrounding area in South Lake Tahoe.
Liberty Utilities is reporting 2,471 customers are without electricity and their estimate for restoration is 12:06 p.m. At this time the cause is unknown.
Half of Liberty customers in the Tamarack Fire area have had their power restored and they are working with fire command on the rest of the customers, 329 homes.

The Galvez family of five was able to grab a few items of clothing and some family photos before evacuating. Their daughter Elissa Galvez started the fundraiser for her mother, father and three siblings who are ages 12, 14 and 16.
"Their house, my childhood home, has been destroyed in the Tamarack Fire near Markleeville," said Elissa. "As of this morning July 18, the house was burnt to the ground with almost everything inside."
South Lake Tahoe forecast: Haze, chance of thunderstorms and zephyr winds this week
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/19/2021 - 7:31amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Smoke and haze from the Tamarack and Dixie fires will produce areas of reduced visibility and air quality in western Nevada and the Sierra. Thunderstorms today may be strong with heavy rain, hail, gusty outflow winds and possible flooding. Thunderstorm chances decrease Tuesday onward, but could return next weekend. Seasonable summer temperatures continue through the week with typical afternoon breezes.
The pattern for the remainder of the week will feature typical mid/late July heat through next weekend. Typical afternoon zephyr breezes will prevail each day.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/18/2021 - 8:39pmDuring the afternoon of July 16, with the Tamarack Fire growing quickly and bearing down on their neighborhood, Chris and Marshauna Mikelionis and their two young children packed up in the car and fled.
The following morning they saw a video of the fire on television and found out the hard way that they lost their home, its contents, and a vehicle to the Tamarack fire.
Chris is a Tahoe area musician who supports his family playing music. He has lost the majority of his instruments.
Air quality in South Lake Tahoe ranges from good to very unhealthy due to Tamarack Fire
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/18/2021 - 8:14pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The winds pushed smoke from the Tamarack Fire into the Lake Tahoe Basin on Sunday afternoon, bringing unhealthy air quality to many on the South Shore.
As of 8:30 p.m., the reporting IQ Air stations showed a wide variety of readings from the "good" range in Meyers to pockets of "very unhealthy" through South Lake Tahoe and Stateline/Kingsbury.

South Lake Tahoe issues 48-hour fire ban in city limits
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/18/2021 - 3:24pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Clive Savacool has instituted a 48-hour burn ban effective immediately in the city limits.
In addition to existing fire restrictions, all outdoor cooking and any outdoor burning – from any source, in any location – is strictly prohibited through Tuesday, July 20 at 3:00 p.m.
This information is current as of 3:00 p.m., July 18 and may change as the situation warrants.
Those living in other areas of the Lake Tahoe Basin are under different rules, though all outdoor burning is not allowed.
Over 700 kids signed up for South Lake Tahoe AYSO
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/18/2021 - 3:03pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The board of South Lake Tahoe AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) is thanking the community for their support of the program. There are over 700 kids from ages 3-17 signed up to play soccer this fall.
Coach Administrator Kelly Meyer said they've never had enough volunteers step up to coach the kids this early, saying it is a great reflection of the community and the unity in South Lake Tahoe.
Tamarack Fire mapped at almost 19,000 acres, some evacuation orders still in place
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/18/2021 - 9:21am11:00PM UPDATE: The Tamarack fire is estimated at 18,299 acres according to the nightly update on Inciweb by the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, with no containment. Earlier in the day, people speaking at a press conference at the Douglas County Senior Center reported 26,000 acres had burned. An infrared-equipped plane is scheduled to fly the fire overnight, to provide more accurate information about the fire’s size and location.

Red Flag Warning issued for Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/17/2021 - 1:08pm3:15PM 7/18 UPDATE: The National Weather Service in Reno has changed the time of the Red Flag Warning for the Lake Tahoe Basin. It is now in effect from 8:00 p.m. Sunday to 11:00 a.m. Monday. They are calling for abundant lightning on dry fuels for the Northern Sierra Front, Tahoe Basin and Northeast California.
Additional storms are expected Monday afternoon but they will be much wetter.
It is possible outflow winds in the areas of the storm could see gusts up to 40 mph.
Road closures in place near Tamarack Fire

SR88
Closed from the junction of US305 in Mono County to the Mono/Alpine County line.
They are currently adding a closure at SR89/SR88 Woodfords Canyon to block access on SR89 south. The roads need to be kept clear for emergency personnel.
Highway 4 is not closed and is currently open west of the Highway 89 and Highway 4 junction.
Collision on US50 and Lake Parkway in Stateline, expect delays

El Dorado County to start roadwork projects including one on Sawmill Road

Changes to portions of Douglas County VHR ordinance on hold after judge issues order

It temporarily stops the County from limiting VHR occupancy based on parking, prohibiting tandem parking on private property, implementing new fines for violations, requiring a notice be posted for unscheduled VHR property inspections and creating the VHR Advisory Board, as currently constituted, until such time as a final determination can be made regarding the constitutionality of the ordinance.

Spooner Lake Park to close rest of summer for construction of a new visitor center and amphitheater

A temporary park closure is necessary to protect the safety of park visitors due to the presence of open trenches and heavy equipment operations. The main entrance, parking areas and front-country will be closed to public access beginning on July 19, 2021 and are anticipated to re-open in early September, 2021.
As South Lake Tahoe leaders contemplate cannabis consumption lounges, Carson City votes against them

The second and final reading of the proposed ordinance will happen August 5.
The board voted unanimously to accept the Business Impact Statement (BIS).
Almost 39,000 miles logged as community rallies together for 16th annual Tahoe Bike Challenge

This year, over 300 Tahoe residents and visitors took the challenge and biked 38,955 miles, a distance equivalent to traveling from Tahoe to San Francisco and back 100 times.

40th anniversary of Death Ride Saturday, expect some road closures

Not for the faint of heart, as many as 2,500 cyclists from around the world will participate in the endurance event by covering over 103 miles, six highly categorized climbs, and over 14,000 feet of vertical climbing over three mountain passes. And all of this will have in just one day, Saturday, July 17.

Tickets issued to passerby after big rig turns over off Upper Truckee Road
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/14/2021 - 9:07pmThe driver of a big rig escaped injury after taking a turn too fast Monday, overturning onto the shoulder of the road.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) of South Lake Tahoe responded to the scene of the solo traffic collision at the intersection of Mt. Rainer Road and North Upper Truckee Road at approximately 2:10 p.m. on July 12. They said the driver too a left turn too fast.
CHP shutdown Mt. Rainier for safety while Welcomes recovered the vehicle.
A few citations were written for people passing by who were taking photos while driving, according to the CHP.
How hot has it been in South Lake Tahoe?
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/14/2021 - 4:40pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many of us who live around Lake Tahoe tolerate heat when it hits the 80s, but anything higher becomes too hot. Just how hot was in over the past seven days?
Between July 7 and July 12, 2021, South Lake Tahoe set or tied records for the highest temperatures on the 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th, with a four-day stretch (July 9-12) in there of consecutive days topping 90 degrees. So far, its not the hottest summer on record but then again, its only July 14!
July 7 - tied the high for that date at 88
July 9 - broke the record high for that date with a 90
One dies, two injured, in separate South Lake Tahoe boating incidents

465 Tahoe kids participating in Lift Literature Summer Reading Challenge

• 168 Elementary/Preschool students
• 150 Middle School students
• 27 High School students
• 120 students attending the Boys & Girls Club Summer Program
This school year set many students behind in reading, so Lift Literature hopes this challenge will help families prioritize reading at home.
Beckwourth Complex Fire now 71 percent contained; over 95,000 acres burned
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/14/2021 - 7:44amThe Beckwourth Complex Fire burning about 60 miles north of Lake Tahoe is now 71 percent contained after burning 95,358 acres. The fire closed US-395 a few times as the fire made a move to the Nevada state line. There was some haze in the Lake Tahoe basin on Tuesday caused by smoke from the River and Henry fires as the smoke from Bechwourth headed northeast. The River Fire has burned 9,500 acres in Mariposa County, the 650 acre Henry Fire is burning south of Carson-Iceberg Wilderness boundary.

Letter: Recent Douglas County VHR administration is disorganized and troublesome

Sweeping changes affected approximately 500 to 600 second homeowners in the county and an indeterminate number of bad apple real estate investors running wildcat hotels. “Heads in beds” and occupancy tax revenues support the Tahoe-Reno region. However, this county action is not a balance of Tourism Rules vs. Distressed Residents, but indication of poor local government administration and possible conflict of interest of those enlisted to support enforcement.

Two Measure S-funded South Lake Tahoe road rehabilitation projects set to begin

He was at his home in South Lake Tahoe with his beloved nephew and care giver, Bill Sendle and Bill's family by his side. Gerald was born in the Ellenville Hospital in Ellenville, New York on October 25, 1935, to Fred and Sarah (Coddington) Hendrickson and was the third of seven sons and two daughters born in his family.

Robert was a member of the South Lake Tahoe community for more than 20 years where he was a loving father to his two daughters Serenity and Brittany. He is predeceased by his parents who he loved so dearly.
Robert was a personality you would not forget and has many friends all throughout the world that miss his outgoing spirit dearly.

We do not have an industry that can support us and our lifestyle here without tourism. Every single business up here is directly related to tourism. Your dreams become reality at Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival when its 2021 season gets underway July 17. The show is nightly Tuesday-Sunday at 7:30 p.m. until August 22.
This season features The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) – a riotously irreverent romp.
Two South Tahoe Babe Ruth teams head to regional finals, looking for community support
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/12/2021 - 6:36pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two of the South Tahoe Babe Ruth teams have done it again - heading the the U.S. Regional finals!
Both the 13-15 year-old and 16-18 year-old teams won the Nevada State All-Star tournament and have qualified to travel to Bakersfield July 25 – July 30, 2021 to face the other seven teams in Regionals (there are eight regions in the country). Their opponents include the Northern, Central and Southern California champs, Arizona and Utah's North and South winners.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/12/2021 - 3:32pmUPDATE 7/15/21: The wastewater treatment plant continues to experience issues necessitating the export of partially treated wastewater to the emergency retention basins on the corner of Black Bart Ave and Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe. The District has modified its system and is now able to pump wastewater that is further along in the treatment process to the basins, which should reduce odor.

Join TRYP (Tahoe Regional Young Professionals) and the Clean Tahoe Program on Wednesday, July 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. as they do their part by cleaning the bike path that connects many of the South Lake beaches.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The local AYSO chapter is holding a fun soccer night on Friday, July 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Bijou Elementary School's soccer field.
Kick around the ball, seek volunteer options, hang out with friends and other soccer families and get help with registration for the upcoming season. There will also be people there to answer any soccer season questions.
Soccer starts mid-August and its the last chance to get kids registered!
There will be free food and drinks.

highs peaking in the upper 60s to upper 70s even over higher Sierra peaks.
Vinny Del Negro wins the American Century at Lake Tahoe during one hole playoff with John Smoltz

The former NBA coach and player was emotional after beating Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz in a one hole playoff on 18 at Edgewood Tahoe.
