When the pandemic hit the South Lake Tahoe community, Tahoe Magic, a trusted and respected non-profit responded to help our neighbors. Thanks to community donations and support from foundations and businesses, they have been able to assist those impacted with more than $430,000 in shelter and essential need assistance since March of 2020. What an incredible community to live in!
Food Bank returns to South Lake Tahoe with monthly farmer's market truck

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Food Bank will be in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, September 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with their free Farmer's Market. They will be set up in the parking lot of St. Theresa Church with extra food due to the current need brought on by the Caldor Fire evacuations.
For over 20 years the Food Bank has been supplying food to the South Lake Tahoe community. Not only do they give food directly to residents, they also give food to local nonprofits for their clients.
Special South Tahoe Refuse drop off locations wrap up Saturday; $5 Dump Day returns

Historic Angora Lookout saved from Caldor fire with aluminized wrap
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/16/2021 - 9:51pmAfter almost being lost in the 2007 Angora Fire, the historic Angora Lookout buildings were protected from the 2021 Caldor Fire with aluminized structure wrap.
As the fire made a move to the east, firefighters working ahead of it had time to proactively protect properties by cutting limbs, reducing vegetation, removing flammable material and bulldozing lines.
They had a contingency plan to also cover the historic lookout to protect it from radiant heat and embers by using what looks like a lot of aluminum foil.
Caldor Fire update: 71% contained and SR88 has reopened

East Zone
Conditions were slightly cooler today, with light west winds through the afternoon with occasional gusts to 20 mph. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Saturday for high winds, which will remain high on Sunday but will be accompanied by higher humidity and lower temperatures than will be present on Saturday.

El Dorado Hills - 3135 cases - +12 - The 14-day new case rate is 150 with 353 per 100,000 residents.
Diamond Springs, El Dorado - 707 cases - +2 - The 14-day new case rate is 54 with 574 per 100,000 residents.

Kiwanis honors Barton Healthcare during their annual installation of officers

After two years of leadership, Kelly Meyer was retired as president and she passed the gavel to Mike Foster. He and the 2021-2022 officers and board members were installed by Kiwanis, Cal-Nev-Ha Division 45, Lieutenant Governor Christy Ramsey.

The following Evacuation warnings have been lifted in El Dorado County:
East zone:
Washoe Meadows area including all residences accessed from North Upper Truckee Road, Tahoe Mountain Road, Lake Tahoe Boulevard, west of Tahoe Mountain Road and Chiapa Drive.
The area remaining in a warning includes Christmas Valley.

Alpine Watershed Group is hosting its 21st Markleeville Creek Day
this Saturday, September 18, 2021. This event allows for the completion of important restoration work through several projects across the Carson River watershed. Volunteers will have the opportunity to plant sod plugs in Hope Valley, remove invasive weeds from meadows and riparian zones, cleanup roads as part of the Adopt-A-Highway program, provide well needed maintenance at an ADA trail, or help improve Markleeville’s downtown curbside appeal through a community beautification project.
No experience is necessary.
Caldor Fire containment line grows to 71 percent

South Upper Truckee residents thank fire fighters heading out from Celio Ranch

While all firefighting efforts are impressive, perhaps none as much as those around the historic Celio Ranch, South Upper Truckee Road and Christmas Valley.

light rain showers (and yes, a chance of snow) starting this weekend. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said big changes are in store this weekend as a rather strong cold front shifts through the region.
There is a Fire Weather Watch in place from Saturday afternoon through Saturday evening, and again from Sunday afternoon through Sunday evening.

Bear walks through the ruins of the Caldor Fire near Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/15/2021 - 2:31pmFirefighter Leslie Pratt of Wyoming was working on the Caldor Fire near Trimmer Peak in the Lake Tahoe Basin on September 11 when she spotted a young bear walking through the burned forest. It did not appear to be harmed and walked normally, Pratt said.
Toogee Sielsch, a Lake Tahoe bear advocate, said by looking at the photo the bear appears to be a wildland yearling. While the bear's coat looks ashy and possibly burned in the photo, Sielsch said the appearance is common in yearlings if they don't get the right calories.

More Caldor Fire evacuation warnings drop in South Lake Tahoe

The area of Fallen Leaf Lake west of Tahoe Mountain is still under an evacuation order.
There still may be equipment moving in the area, please drive safely.

TOCCATA, the Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, under the direction of Conductor James Rawie, is finishing their 2021 Tahoe Summer MusicFest with the four-concert series. It started on September 12 in Incline Village and will end in South Lake Tahoe.

Barton Skilled Nursing residents return after Calder Fire evacuation

The residents spent two weeks at Ormsby Post Acute Rehab in Carson City. They were transported to and from Barton on Lake Tahoe Unified School District buses and via Tahoe Douglas Fire ambulances.
A celebration took place as they returned to their home with smiles on their faces.

The South Tahoe High Wrestling Team unloaded the truck that was full of clothing, blankets, bedding, baby items, dust masks, food, water, personal care items, tools, and kits of cleaning equipment and supplies.
Local residents (must have local identification) can pick up supplies starting on Friday, September 17 at 3609 Vanda Lee Way, South Lake Tahoe. The donations will be distributed by the Lake Tahoe Church of Christ.

The community gathering will be to celebrate the first responders and all organizations and individuals involved in fighting the Caldor Fire. The event is for all ages and there will be games, contests, raffles, food and drink specials, and music. The Bob Lopez Band will be playing from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., followed by the Bread and Butter Band from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Bread & Broth 4 Kids holding special food bag giveaway day

Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) has given out weekly food bags to South Lake Tahoe youth all summer, and ended that program a week before the school year was slated to start. With smoke and subsequent evacuation, school isn't starting until Thursday, so the nonprofit, whose focus is feeding food insecure locals, added this additional day.
SR89 opens from Meyers to Pickett's Junction as Caldor Fire moves to 68% containment
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/14/2021 - 6:58amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans has reopened State Route 89 between Meyers and Hope Valley/Pickett's Junction, but US50 and SR88 remain closed. Crews are working to make US50 between Kyburz and South Lake Tahoe safer for the public to travel by cutting down trees and clearing burned debris.
Overnight, firefighters were able to gain more containment line, moving to 68 percent. They continue to work on hotspots and securing containment lines near SR88 and Kirkwood and Caples Lake as well as along Trimmer Peak and Desolation Wilderness.

Fire crews continue to mop up the Caldor Fire which is now 67 percent contained
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/13/2021 - 6:52pmThe Caldor Fire did not gain any acreage since yesterday and is now 67 percent contained. The cause of the fire that was first reported just before 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 14 is under investigation.

The area of Fallen Leaf Road from Tahoe Mountain Road to the end of Fallen Leaf Road is reduced to a warning. The privately owned residences are open to be occupied under this warning. The US Forest Service permitted residences must get an exemption permit from the US Forest Service prior to returning and that will likely be in the form of a day pass only.

With the evacuation of South Lake Tahoe due to the Caldor Fire, and the smoke that has filled the Lake Tahoe Basin over recent weeks, organizers of the Lake Tahoe Marathon have moved the event out for three week. The 26th running of the popular event will now be held October 29-31, 2021.
There are still spots available in the over dozen events that take place on all sides of Lake Tahoe, plus the Tahoe Trifecta and Tahoe Triple. The Optimist Club Pumpkin Fun Run is also returning.

Farmers Market returns to South Lake Tahoe Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With US50 and SR88 closed, the route of many fruit and vegetable vendors is cut off but the Tuesday Farmer's Market in South Lake Tahoe will still go on as planned on September 14. Smoke and the recent evacuation has caused cancelations of the popular weekly event.
Organizer Jim Coldwell said at least ten farmers are going to make the extra journey along with some additional craft and food vendors.
Owners of Squaw Valley announce name change to Palisades Tahoe

The use of the word 'squaw' is considered to be a derogatory and offensive ethnic and sexist slur, and long-running complaints from the Washoe Tribe of Nevada led to a plan to change the name in mid-2020. overwhelming evidence that the term ‘squaw’ is considered offensive.

Some personnel assigned to the fire are now leaving, with 3,771 remaining on the Caldor. US0 is now closed from South Lake Tahoe to Kyburz with more on the western end of the fire area being deemed safe to travel.
South Tahoe Now has been providing fire updates every morning and evening for the duration of the fire. We will now provide a daily story unless the situation changes.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District to start the 2021/22 school year Thursday
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/12/2021 - 6:05pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Now that all neighborhoods on the South Shore have been repopulated after the Caldor Fire evacuations over the past two weeks, school will be starting at Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) sites on Thursday, September 16.
The final areas of the LTUSD boundary in the areas of South Upper Truckee, North Upper Truckee, and Christmas Valley have now been downgraded to an evacuation warning, and those in the South Lake Tahoe city limits have all warnings removed.

Christmas Valley has been reduced from an Evacuation Order to a warning. Homes can be accessed from SR89 south of US50 in Meyers and South Upper Truckee Road.
All properties on the east side of SR89 north from the city limits to Emerald Bay and those in the South Lake Tahoe city limits had their evacuation warning removed.
All homes in El Dorado County on the South Shore remain in an evacuation warning level (yellow on the map above).
Caldor Fire heroes greeted by appreciative South Lake Tahoe residents
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/12/2021 - 9:57amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The tributes to Caldor Fire first responders continue in South Lake Tahoe, with gratitude from restaurants giving free meals to locals standing on street corners to say "thank you" with signs, hoots and hollers.
As the fire roared toward Lake Tahoe, the work done by fire fighters kept fire away from homes, saving what would have been complete devastation to South Lake Tahoe and Meyers. Then hundreds of law enforcement from across the state patrolled the streets to ensure homes were protected from looters and other disturbances.
SW Gas meeting Sunday with residents that turned off power prior to evacuating

They are there to meet with their customers who reside in the Upper Truckee area, north of US50 who turned their natural gas service off before evacuating from the Caldor Fire.
Southwest Gas will be on hand to start the process to safely re-establish natural gas service to your property. W

Saturday night Caldor Fire update: 65% contained, 218,764 acres

They continue to work around Kirkwood Lake, Lake Margaret, along the SR88 corridor, Silver Lake and the US50 corridor.
There are a lot of hazard trees needed to be removed in all areas of the fire, and crews continue to mop up and remove resources including hoses where they are able.

The site contains helpful information for those who have suffered property loss or damage or been displaced from their homes and serves as a one-stop shop to help answer people’s questions.
North Upper Truckee residents now able to return home; Alpine County updates its orders
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/11/2021 - 4:22pmThe mandatory evacuation order has been lifted for the North Upper Truckee neighborhood, but remains in place for residents of Christmas Valley. Alpine County has also updated its mandatory orders.
US 50 is closed at the round-a-bout so returnees to North Upper Truckee (NUT) must use Lake Tahoe Boulevard to North Upper Truckee Road.
Tahoe Mountain residents may also return.
Those living on Chiapa Drive may return home but must go to the final checkpoint on NUT and provide ID with address to be able to use US50 to get home to receive a pass.
Generations of memories as the Caldor Fire threatened Fallen Leaf Lake

Douglas County drops all precautionary evacuation warnings

They precautionary measures have been dropped for:
Upper Kingsbury (South)
Upper Kingsbury (North)
Central Kingsbury
Lower Kingsbury
Lower Oliver, Kahle Drive region and roads
Lake Village
Areas South of Elks Point Road

Caldor Fire now 60% contained as firefighters strengthen lines at east end
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/11/2021 - 7:27amFirefighters were able to put more containment on the perimeter of the Caldor Fire which is now 60 percent contained. The acres burned increased by 30 acres last night, and it is now 218,489 acres in size.
East One
The Red Flag warning expired at 11:00 p.m. Friday, but gusty winds continued overnight near Caples Lake. Established fire lines throughout the East Zone held through the extreme wind event over the last 24 hours and current fire behavior is primarily interior creeping and smoldering. Crews patrolled, held, and improved lines through the night.
10,000 remain evacuated from Caldor fire which remains 53% contained
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/10/2021 - 6:56pmApproximately 10,000 people remain evacuated from their homes in the Caldor Fire zone. Some were allowed back in the West Zone today, but Christmas Valley and North Upper Truckee residents in the East Zone remain evacuated along with many other western areas.
There is no timeline for any of those still evacuated, but fire officials said they hope to give residents good news in a few days.
As of Friday night, the Caldor Fire remains at 218,459 acres and 53 percent contained.
Unprecedented amount of services and financial help as LTCC prepares for Fall Quarter

Students can come to campus on One College Drive and apply and register for classes, meet with an academic counselor, and learn about financial aid options including free LTCC CARES grants of up to $750 and $250 emergency awards for those who live or work in the Caldor Fire evacuation zone and have been impacted by it.
South Tahoe Refuse adds drop-off option for household garbage in Meyers
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/10/2021 - 9:13amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Refuse collection service will resumed in the repopulated area of the South Shore Monday, but many returning residents in Meyers may have missed their scheduled day.
Many customers of South Tahoe Refuse will have spoiled food and/or garbage due to the evacuation and they opened three temporary locations for those returning home, but now Meyers is returning home so they've added a new location for household trash.
South Lake Tahoe neighborhood greets firefighters with cheers and treats
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/10/2021 - 7:51amThe Caldor Fire has made an impact in all neighborhoods and communities from Grizzly Flats to South Lake Tahoe during the one month since it started burning on August 14 in El Dorado County.
As fire crews make their way off the mountain after a long shift, South Lake Tahoe residents are greeting them with cheers and signs of appreciation for saving the community from flames that came very close to destroying homes.
One such group are those who live at the top of High Meadows, Sierra House and Marshall Trails.
