Day in Paradise canceled due to smoke, fire and COVID concerns
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/28/2021 - 10:10amThe South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club canceled this year's Day in Paradise, originally scheduled for August 28 due to the Caldor Fire.
"Due to the air quality, fire concerns and COVID concerns, the Optimist Club has made the tough decision to cancel this year's Optimist Club Day in Paradise and Duck Race. We hope that all understand the we did not make this decision lightly and hope to be back next year," said the club in a statement.
The planned silent auction will move to an online format and will let the public know when that happens.
15th day of Caldor Fire: 149,684 acres and 19% contained
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/28/2021 - 9:39amThe Caldor Fire, which started on the evening of August 14, has so far burned 149,684 acres in El Dorado County. The contained is 19 percent. Containment lines are at the head of the fire, the western edge.
The nighttime inversion layer returned bringing a reduction in fire spread, spotting, and visibility. Down-canyon winds and low humidity increased fire activity in Division D, the area south of Pollock Pines near Sly Park Road Firing operations continued in the eastern flanks, while firefighters took advantage of the slow easterly winds to improve control lines.

Emergency closure of courts due to smoke from Caldor Fire
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/27/2021 - 2:37pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to widespread smoke from the Caldor Fire, the El Dorado Superior Court is under an emergency order to protect staff and court users.
The order allows the court to extend the last day for time not waived jury trials and for preliminary hearings through September 17. This allows people the Court flexibility in terms of pulling officers away from dealing with the state of emergency to come to court and testify. Also, many people in the County have been evacuated, displaced or have left their homes.
Taking care of South Lake Tahoe homeless during adverse conditions

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) has been working to assist this population of vulnerable people. They have been providing information and protection to these unsheltered individuals at their offices and their team members have been doing outreach in known encampments.
City of South Lake Tahoe and tourist agency: Now is not the time to visit Lake Tahoe

Smoky Lake Tahoe as Caldor Fire grows to 143,951 acres

While containment lines may grow on one end, the fire growth on another end has left the percentage of area with a strong containment line around it remains the same. There will be heavy smoke once again in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Suspicious fire overnight in South Lake Tahoe; Vehicle catches fire while transporting wood
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/26/2021 - 10:17pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Fire personnel from Lake Valley Fire and the US Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) were called to the scene of an illegal bonfire above High Meadow Trail on Wednesday night at approximately 8:24 p.m.
The first responders were able to quickly put out the fire which LTBMU said was about 3' x 3'.
Two LTBMU patrol units were up in the area Thursday to look into the cause which is still under investigation.

COVID testing is limited in South Lake Tahoe due to cancelations due to smoke of the outdoor testing facility at El Dorado Beach. The County is trying to move it to an indoor location.
Pollock Pines, Camino, Kyburz - 671 cases - +7 - The 14-day new case rate is 60 with 442 per 100,000 residents.
El Dorado Hills - 2802 cases - +17 - The 14-day new case rate is 189 with 445 per 100,000 residents.

As of Thursday evening, the fire has burned 139,510 acres and remains 12 percent contained.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office seeks public's help in Zephyr Cove theft case
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/26/2021 - 5:15pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect involved in the theft of packages from a residence in Zephyr Cove.
The suspect is identified as a male adult, approximately 30-years-old, with dark hair and a mustache.
On August 24, 2021, at approximately 4:32 p.m., a white Toyota Tacoma backed into a driveway in the Zephyr Cove area. The male driver exited the vehicle, and stole a number of packages sitting near the residence. He placed them in the bed of the truck before driving away.
High-speed pursuit from Meyers into Douglas County leads to arrest of homicide suspect
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/26/2021 - 4:39pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - An Arizona man wanted in connection with a homicide was arrested Thursday after a high speed chase that reached speeds over 100 mph.
A white Cadillac passed by a license plate reader in Meyers that alerted law enforcement the vehicle was associated with a man wanted for homicide. The California Highway Patrol began pursuit and called ahead to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office at 2:44 p.m. to let them know to expect the vehicle. It had turned east at the intersection of SR89 and SR 88.
Lake Tahoe boat inspections on pause due to smoke

Watercraft inspection stations will remain closed until it is deemed safe for personnel to return to work, they said.

Since students live in both the evacuation warning and order areas, school with now start on Tuesday, September 7, 2021.
LTUSD said in a statement the health and safety of all families in the community is at the forefront, especially those that live in areas affection by the warning and order.
STPUD asks customers to conserve water during fire emergencies

Many in the community are packing their emergency supply kit and coming up with an evacuation plan to prepare in case of fire. The South Tahoe Public Utility District reminds customers to turn off irrigation systems and outdoor hoses in the event of an evacuation.
New evacuation warning issued for Christmas Valley and Hope Valley

An evacuation warning has now been issued for Christmas Valley from SR89 west to Echo Summit, SR89 due west to Watershed Ridge and south to the Amador/El Dorado County line, SR89 south from Luther Pass Road to Picketts Junction on SR88, and west on SR88 to Kirkwood.
El Dorado County opens Local Assistance Center for those affected by Caldor Fire

“In these times of natural disaster, it can be overwhelming to know where to turn for help,” said Board of Supervisors chair, John Hidahl. “The LAC is a one-stop location to help our residents start the process of rebuilding their lives and livelihoods.”

Throughout the evening hours and overnight, the fire remained active in the
Northeast with most growth occurring in Divisions I and J. Critical fuel conditions, steep and rugged terrain still present a challenge for crews. Firefighters are continuing with the firing operations in Divisions A and W to help strengthen control lines. A division map can be seen above.
Phish moves Lake Tahoe concert to Shoreline Amphitheater

Originally scheduled to be at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena on August 31 and September 1, they will now play those two shows at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, Calif. on the same dates.
Tickets for the Lake Tahoe shows will automatically be honored on their respective days at Shoreline. Seating at these shows will be general admission, and please note different timing: 5:30 p.m. Doors Open/ 7:00 p.m. Show.

Caldor Fire evening update: 126,566 acres and 12 percent contained

Today the Northeast section of the fire continued to grow, adjacent to Highway 50 and Twin Bridges, due to up-canyon winds and spotting. Critical fuel conditions, steep and rugged terrain still present a challenge for firefighters.
Overall, the fire experienced slight growth throughout the day while firefighters worked to strengthen containment and control lines.
Caldor Fire - Next couple of days are critical

El Dorado County VHRs now have 500 foot clustering rule
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/25/2021 - 2:44pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - In order to strike a balance between quality of life for those living in El Dorado County and those who own second homes and rent them out to tourists, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the first reading of an updated vacation home rental (VHR) ordinance.
The updated provision prohibits new vacation rentals within 500 feet, measured from property line to property line, of a legally existing vacation home rental.

Caldor Fire burning southwest of Lake Tahoe now 122,980 acres, 11% contained

The fire was active in the early portion of the day due to the inversion layer lifting rapidly. The Northeast side of the fire saw the most movement towards US50 and Twin Bridges aided by up canyon winds and spotting distances up to a half mile away. In areas that were in alignment with winds, passive crown fire runs were seen.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Food Bank will be in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, August 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The announcement is late as they weren't sure they could be able make it to town due to the Caldor Fire.
The food truck sets up in the parking lot of St. Theresa Catholic Church at 1041 Lyons Avenue in South Lake Tahoe from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. each fourth Wednesday. They bring fresh fruits and vegetables.
There is no information needed to get food.
FDA officially approves Pfizer two-dose COVID-19 vaccine

The vaccine also continues to be available under emergency use authorization (EUA) for individuals 12 through 15 years of age and for the administration of a third dose in certain immunocompromised individuals. The Pfizer vaccine will now be called Comirnaty (koe-mir’-na-tee).
Eric Church outdoor concerts this weekend canceled at Lake Tahoe, rescheduled for 2022

The concert has already been rescheduled for August 27 and 28, 2022.
"Due to public safety and the fires in the area, we are sorry to announce that we must postpone Eric Church with Paul Cauthen at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys scheduled for this Friday and Saturday, August 27 & 28," said the notice.
All tickets will be honored in 2022.

Nevada State Parks close due to smoke but expect to reopen Friday

The fire has produced increasingly hazardous air quality for Northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe Basin. The air quality forecasts predict a continuation of these hazardous conditions through the upcoming week.
In an abundance of caution for our staff, visitors, and public safety personnel working to battle this fire, Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park will close, beginning Monday August 23, 2021 and is anticipated to re-open Friday August 27, 2021, depending on conditions.
Information boards about Caldor Fire placed around South Shore

USFS and the PIOs will change the boards once a day.
They are located in the parking lot of TJ Maxx in South Lake Tahoe at the Y, Holiday Market in Meyers, both Safeway stores, MontBleu Casino, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District stations 21, 24 and 25 (top of Kingsbury, Zephyr Cove, Glenbrook) and at the evacuation center set up at the Douglas County Community Center.
Caldor Fire morning update: 117,704 acres and 9% contained

Overall, activity at the Caldor Fire through the night remained moderate with some significant terrain-driven runs in Division W. The up-canyon southwest winds decreased and moderate humidity recovery allowed firefighters to engage in direct control tactics while advancing indirect line construction.
33,056 residents in the region remain evacuated from their homes.

LTUSD and DCSD develop plans for smoky school days

Douglas County School District (DCSD) didn't have a plan in place for the first day of school Monday, with with AQI levels around 400 PM2.5, students were kept indoors. But by the end of day Superintendent Keith Lewis sent a letter to parents.

The cause is the Caldor Fire burning to the southwest of Lake Tahoe, and the heavy smoke generating from the 100,000+ acre fire.

The fire was active in the early portion of the day due to the inversion layer lifting rapidly which fed the fire. As the day progressed the weather improved which allowed crews to continue building containment lines throughout various areas of the fire.
Fundraiser in Sparks to raise money for El Dorado Community Foundation fire victim fund

There will be a fundraiser for the El Dorado Community Foundation's Caldor Fire victim relief fund in Sparks, Nevada on Tuesday, August 24 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. It will be held at the Rail City Ale House located at 2121 Victorian Avenue.
Attendees will get special wines paired with Prosciutto Wrapped Honey Lemon Shrimp, Tossed Mesclun Salad with Balsamic Dressing, Grille French Pork Chop with Spinach Dijon sauce over Portobella Mushroom Risotto, and Molten Lava Cake with Raspberries. Tickets are $68 per person and ten percent of funds raised will go to the Foundation.
Three South Lake Tahoe residents facing federal charges along with man from Texas

A federal grand jury returned three indictments on Aug. 19, charging four of those individuals with drug and gun crimes committed in and around South Lake Tahoe.
South Lake Tahoe hitting record amounts of PM2.5 in the air leading to harmful air quality

Smoke from wildfires contains chemicals, gases and fine particles that can harm health. The greatest hazard comes from breathing fine particles in the air, which can reduce lung function, worsen asthma and other existing heart and lung conditions, and cause coughing, wheezing and difficulty breathing.

Westerly winds will continue to push wildfire smoke with degraded air quality into the Sierra and western Nevada. No rain is in sight through next week.
Caldor Fire News: 104,309 acres, 5% contained

The operational boundary of the Caldor Fire will be moving out to SR89 on Monday morning but there will be no new evacuation warnings or orders moving with it.
The eastern operation objective line was at Strawberry Creek, but with the fire moving in Kyburz, Calfire moved it out.
"We don't want to be fighting fire from 89," said fire managers during their evening recap Sunday. "We're just giving people room to fight the fire. We have no intention of letting the fire get to 89."

Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/22/2021 - 11:29amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the Caldor Fire looming to the west of us, the Dixie Fire to the north, and the recent Tamarack Fire to the south, its time to prepare should such an event come into the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The City of South Lake Tahoe has initiated its Emergency Operations Center and is providing the public with video updates each morning and evening. They can been seen on its Facebook page and website.
Caldor Fire at almost 100,000 acres, 0% contained, 328 structures destroyed
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/22/2021 - 7:00amEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The Caldor Fire burning southwest of Lake Tahoe is now 98,149 acres and remains 0 percent contained.
The Caldor Fire remained active again throughout the night, particularly in the northeast section of the fire. Vegetation and timber is igniting very easily and spotting continues to occur ahead of the fire perimeter.
There was a spot fire late in the day Saturday on the north side of US50 near Kyburz and that has grown to about 400 acres. Firefighters will be prioritizing this spot fire today.
DIerks Bentley show at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena canceled
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/21/2021 - 7:45pmDue to public safety and the fires in the Lake Tahoe area, the Dierks Bentley show at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena originally scheduled for Sunday has been postponed.
His show in 2020 was canceled due to COVID-19, and the August 22 was a rescheduled date.
