There have been 64 new cases of COVID-19 since yesterday in El Dorado County.
Pollock Pines, Camino, Kyburz - 862 cases - +5 - The 14-day new case rate is 30 with 221 per 100,000 residents.
El Dorado Hills - 3301 cases - +9 - The 14-day new case rate is 61 with 144 per 100,000 residents.

Lake Tahoe area recreation facilities start winter closures
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/15/2021 - 3:07pmThe USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has begun the annual process of closing recreational facilities around Lake Tahoe for the winter season. Seasonal closures apply to many National Forest recreation sites including beaches, campgrounds, picnic areas and forest roads.
Campgrounds, picnic areas, and beach facilities on National Forest lands managed by Tahoe Recreation, a division of California Land Management, will close at the end of the day on Sunday, Oct. 17, 2021.
USFS lifts Lake Tahoe backcountry closure for areas outside Caldor Fire footprint

ROUND HILL, Nev. - A "Community Thank the Firefighters Benefit" is being held at Casey's at Round Hill on Saturday, October 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Comedian and local radio personality Howie Nave will serve as the event's MC for the evening which will feature firefighter equipment demonstrations, stories and live music. Casey's is offering free appetizers.
The community is invited to visit with firefighters and show their appreciation during not only the Caldor Fire, but during all fire emergencies.
The event is a fundraiser for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.
Reduced fire closure area in Eldorado National Forest
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/14/2021 - 9:08pmThe Caldor Fire Closure Area on the Eldorado National Forest will be reduced beginning Friday, October 15 now that fire containment is at 98 precent, weather has moderated and some areas of fire suppression repair and hazard tree removal have been completed. After this story was written the backcountry closure for Lake Tahoe was lifted as well (see here).
South Lake Tahoe honors WWII and Pearl Harbor survivor Garfield Ware

Garfield Ware, a young Navy seaman at the time, was on board the USS Lexington when the Japanese attacked the base in Hawaii.
On Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Veterans Alliance organized a special celebration for Ware, one of the last Pearl Harbor and WWII survivors still alive.

While containment lines are no longer being threatened, the extreme drought conditions that helped the fire consume more than 220,000 acres will keep the fire active until a heavier snow or rain soaks through. As welcome as that will be for the fire, it also has us bracing for potential post-fire impacts from ash, sediment, and debris.

The El Dorado Community Foundation announces Caldor Fire recovery grants for nonprofits

This grant is open to all nonprofits serving El Dorado County who are specifically working to help residents and communities recover from the losses and trauma of the Caldor Fire.
The Foundation challenges all to think creatively and outside the lane normally occupied by program services, to address any one of the topics below:
• Housing
• Childhood development and wellness
• Youth Development
• Organizational development of emerging community organizations
Caltrans to start emergency roadwork on US50 and SR89
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/14/2021 - 3:57pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. – Two emergency contracts are in place to repair sections of U.S. Highway 50 and State Highway 89 that were damaged during the devastating Caldor Fire that has burned nearly 222,000 acres of the Eldorado National Forest and land in the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
Work along the highways will include hazardous tree and debris removal; rockfall protection; cleaning culverts, catch basins and drainage ditches; guardrail replacement; pavement repairs, and erosion control.
Lake Tahoe non-profits receive $85,000 from American Century Championship
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/14/2021 - 3:44pmAnother $85,000 was given to 19 Lake Tahoe area non-profits by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) and American Century Championship on Thursday. The money comes from the 2021 celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe in July.
Normally an in-person check presentation event, this year's awardees were announced during a virtual meeting of the LTVA board.
El Dorado County Fire donates training gear to Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy at LTCC
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/13/2021 - 8:11pmEl Dorado County Fire Protection District (EDCFPD) has donated dozens of sets of turnout gear to students at the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy at Lake Tahoe Community College. The firefighting gear will provide realistic training equipment for fire academy students to wear while they learn the hands-on skills necessary to be firefighters.
Even though the donated gear has lived out a full service life with EDCFPD, the college students in the academy will be able to use the turnouts as they train to be firefighters.
NDOT work at Cave Rock Monday to cause lane shifts and reductions
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/13/2021 - 6:52pmLane shifts and reductions will take place Monday, October 18 on U.S. 50 through the Cave Rock tunnels at Lake Tahoe as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) removes rock from the slope above the tunnels.
Between 7:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., U.S. 50 will be reduced to one lane in each direction and westbound traffic will be routed through the eastbound Cave Rock tunnel. Motorists are advised to slow to posted speed limits and travel safely through road work zones.

Lake Tahoe grading season comes to a close

After this date all construction sites must be appropriately winterized to protect Lake Tahoe’s famed water quality.
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires all construction sites to be winterized by October 15 to help prevent sediment from washing into streams and the lake and to prevent soil compaction and disturbance during the region’s historic period of wet weather.
Community supports Tamarack Turnaround with $80,000 to disperse to those affected by Tamarack Fire

During the fire, a group of local residents and members of the business community established Tamarack Turnaround after recognizing a need to connect victims of the fire to the hundreds of individuals wanting to help by donating money. At the time, Douglas County did not have a vetted process nor a designated nonprofit formalized to offer monetary donation management.

Local historian David Woodruff is giving the two different presentations at the Wylder Hotel in Hope Valley (formerly Sorenson's Resort). Both are free and open to the public and will be held outside the main lodge around the fire ring. If weather prohibits the outside talks they will move indoors.

Though not common, a badger has been seen around South Lake Tahoe

Even though they've been known to live around the lake and around trees, they are more likely found on wide open terrain like the Carson Pass where they can chase squirrels.
Just this past week though, two people have spotted a badger on the South Shore.
One was spotted in Rabe Meadow and one was spotted in the Ski Run/Wildwood area. They could be the same badger and it is unknown if the camera shots were of the same animal, or two.

US50 over Echo Summit closed due to collisions and spinouts
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/11/2021 - 12:35pmThere have been multiple collisions on Lake Tahoe area roads today as the first snow of the season entered the area. Snow in some areas, like along Emerald Bay Road at the "Y" out to Meyers received a lot more than people a couple of miles away.
As of 1:15 p.m. Monday, US50 over Echo Summit has been closed due to several accidents and collisions. It will take some time to get it all cleaned up so the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has closed it.
There are also several spin-uts along Lake Tahoe Boulevard towards Upper Truckee Road, so it is being advised to stay out of the area.

Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe Monday-Tuesday as first real taste of winter pushes into region

Expect winds from the northeast 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, and waves 1 to 3 feet.
Get ready for the first taste of winter with a strong cold front pushing across the Sierra and in western Nevada. A cold low pressure system is slated to bring breezy winds and chances for snow showers across the area later Sunday evening into Monday. A hard freeze is expected for much of the region overnight Monday and Tuesday.

Caldor Fire now at 98% contained, 221,775 acres

After six hours of light precipitation yesterday morning, conditions moved to warmer (though not warm) temperatures with drier conditions and light winds through the weekend. Freezing temperatures and icy roads are expected Saturday night through the fire area.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — South Lake Tahoe’s only indoor mini-golf bar, Flatstick Pub, is hosting an Oktoberfest fundraiser to support and uplift those affected by recent California wildfires. Proceeds from special sales and and special event will be donated to the California Wildfire Relief.
During the month of October, Flatstick Pub will donate $5 for every Oktoberfest stein deal purchased to the California Wildfire Relief Fund. The $25 deal includes a commemorative beer stein, local Oktoberfest beer and a pub pretzel.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Captain's Corner Tahoe will be holding a fundraiser to support the employees at Sierra-at-Tahoe on Sunday, October 10 from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Proceeds from the retail sales will support the staff at the resort as they lost a lot of equipment and personal supplies. There will be beer and wine sales, both bottles and glasses, with proceeds also going to the fundraiser.
The beverages are from local Northern California and featured on Tahoe Tastings wine tasting cruise.
There will also be a raffle and other activities too. \
Halloween Pumpkin Run part of Lake Tahoe Marathon; Volunteers needed for event

The pumpkin runs are part of the Lake Tahoe Marathon.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The State Route 89 corridor is one of the most visited and popular destinations within the Lake Tahoe Region. Traffic congestion and year-round visitor demand exceeds current infrastructure during peak times.
After the recent completion of the SR 89 Corridor Management Plan, the creation of a multi-use trail along the lake’s southwest shoreline was identified as a high priority need. The planning process to design the Cascade to Meeks section of the West Shore Tahoe Trail has now begun. The public is encouraged to be a part of it.

City of South Lake Tahoe seeks online feedback on Hazard Mitigation Plan

The survey, which was developed by Wood Environment and Infrastructure Solutions in coordination with South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, is being conducted online and is open now through Friday, November 12.
Public participation in the planning process is an essential strategy for developing a plan that will be effective, supported by community members, and ultimately implemented.
Regan Beach closes for season; Harmful algal blooms detected

Out of an abundance of caution, the City of South Lake Tahoe closed early after harmful algal blooms were found at the beach. They had the presence of Antatoxin-A (cyanobacterial).
COVID-19 cases for Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County and Douglas County

El Dorado County
Pollock Pines, Camino, Kyburz - 846 cases - +2 - The 14-day new case rate is 35 with 258 per 100,000 residents.
El Dorado Hills - 3257 cases - +8 - The 14-day new case rate is 71 with 167 per 100,000 residents.
Diamond Springs, El Dorado - 737 cases - +1 - The 14-day new case rate is 13 with 138 per 100,000 residents.
New public art piece installed as tribute to all who saved South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/08/2021 - 4:53pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A new piece of art created with love, passion, talent and gratitude is now sitting in front of Co-Work Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe, an example of "Tahoe Strong."
In July, vandals destroyed one of three turned art pieces created and donated by local artist Malcolm Tibbets that were on display in front of the Harrison Avenue business.
Some snow on higher peaks around Lake Tahoe Friday; stronger storm possible Monday
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/08/2021 - 3:41pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After some widespread rain around Lake Tahoe overnight, many looked to the mountains to see if any snow fell. All peaks had snow from Trimmer and Freel Peaks to the south, Mt. Tallac to the west and Mt. Rose to the north. Though not a lot of snow, its a glimmer of hope for a snowy winter. Snow levels were around 6500 to 8000 feet with snow accumulations around 1 - 3 inches for the elevations above 8000 feet this morning.
"Beer Relief" to celebrate first responders and support Sierra-at-Tahoe employees and programs

Sierra-at-Tahoe suffered major damage during the Caldor Fire, including the building that stored employee's equipment and belongings.
The Hangar of South Lake Tahoe is throwing a party on Saturday, October 9 to not only raise funds for Sierra staff and programs, but to celebrate first responders who fought the Caldor Fire and protected the community.
The public is invited to support the mountain that have given so much to so many. There will be ski movie premiers, live music, raffle prizes, and beer specials.
