ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - An official swearing-in ceremony has been scheduled for newly elected and appointed officials in Alpine County on Monday, January 6, 2025, at 11 a.m. The ceremony will take place in the Board of Supervisors Chambers. The oath of office will be administered by Richard D. Meyer, Superior Court Judge.

Search and Rescue Tahoe finds lost backcountry snowboarder near Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/01/2025 - 6:59pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.- The El Dorado County Sheriff's (EDSO) Search and Rescue Team (SAR) responded to a call on December 29 about a person lost near the Mr. Toads trail in South Lake Tahoe at Saxon Creek and Warr trails.
The person had been on a split board with a friend, making their way up from SR89. They were riding downhill as darkness was setting in. The "friend" didn't want to wait and left the buddy behind, several miles from any trailhead without light and little understanding of navigating the terrain. They did have a charged cellphone and were able to call 911 at 5 p.m.
Man arrested in 2015 in South Lake Tahoe for kidnapping now faces new charges
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/01/2025 - 3:25pmIn 2015, Matthew Muller kidnapped Denise Huskins and brought her to a home in South Lake Tahoe. Now, Muller was charged with breaking into two women’s houses in California in 2009, drugging them and threatening to rape them, according to the Santa Clara County prosecutor's office.
The 2015 case attracted national attention as it was dubbed a "Gone Girl" copycat crime. Law enforcement said at the time Huskins' boyfriend at the time, Aaron Quinn, faked the abduction just like what transpired in the movie, Gone Girl.
New Year's Day fire in El Dorado County claims lives of two
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/01/2025 - 2:56pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - On January 1, 2025, at approximately 3:50 a.m., deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO), along with personnel from Cal Fire and Pioneer Fire, responded to a structure fire in the 7000 block of Mt. Aukum Road in Somerset.
According to EDSO, deputies had learned multiple people were in the residence. Once fire personnel were able to extinguish the fire, two individuals were found deceased inside the home.

Drunk driving arrests down at Lake Tahoe and in California, but anything above "zero" is too much

According to statistics, there are about one million DUI arrests a year in the United States, so they are still a significant issue even with the dropping rate of arrests.

New speed limits now in effect for some South Lake Tahoe streets

The affected areas and new speed limits are as follows:
- Pioneer Trail: From US 50 to Keller Road, the speed limit has been reduced from 30 mph to 25 mph.
- Ski Run Blvd: From US 50 to Tamarack Avenue, the speed limit has been reduced from 35 mph to 30 mph.
- Ski Run Blvd: From Tamarack Avenue to Pioneer Trail, the speed limit has been reduced from 35 mph to 30 mph.
Two arrested as suspects in 2023 Douglas County murder
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/30/2024 - 7:44pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Two people have been arrested for the 2023 murder of a Carson City man. On August 14, 2023, Paul Adam Mulkey, 42, was found deceased at the end of Stephanie Way in Minden, Nev. An autopsy determined that Mulkey had been murdered.
During the course of the investigation into the murder, Larry Allen Arnold, a 48-year-old male from Carson City, and Melissa Nicole Malmstedt (AKA Melissa Clack), a 42-year-old female from Minden, were identified as suspects.
Both suspects were arrested for the murder of Mulkey on December 30, 2024.
Two trucks stolen from Carson City dealership recovered after high-speed pursuits in Los Angeles
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/30/2024 - 7:27pmCARSON CITY, Nev. – Two pickup trucks were stolen from the General Motors dealership in Carson City at 2 a.m. on December 30, each being recovered after high-speed pursuits on Los Angeles freeways.
The dealership notified both the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and California authorities about the stolen vehicles. Shortly thereafter, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) had located the vehicles and were pursuing them.
As CHP attempted to stop the two vehicles, both of them sped away in different directions.
New California law in 2025:Unlicensed handyperson jobs increase from $500 to $1,000
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/30/2024 - 2:08pmHiring unlicensed handypersons for jobs around the house has been limited to their ability to charge up to $500, materials included, without obtaining a contractor's license, until now. Assembly Bill 2622 will become law on January 1, 2025, and will allow an unlicensed person to complete small projects up to $1,000 without obtaining a contractor’s license if they do not hire workers and no building permits are needed.
If a consumer’s project under $1,000 requires workers or permits, a contractor’s license in the appropriate license classification is required.

Starting Monday, high pressure will build in, bringing drier and more stable conditions. A weak system may deliver light showers near the Oregon border on Wednesday with a slight chance of affecting Lake Tahoe, but otherwise, the week will remain dry with lighter winds and above-average temperatures heading into the New Year. Valley inversions and stagnant air conditions are expected to develop by midweek under clearer skies.
Knight Monsters take care of Tulsa Oilers in front of packed houses at Tahoe Blue Event Center

The home team lost the first in the three-game series on Friday but got the job done on Saturday and Sunday. All of the action was done in front of sold-out crowds.

The Tahoe Knight Monsters fought valiantly against the Tulsa Oilers, but were defeated 4-3 in overtime in front of a sold-out crowd at the Tahoe Blue Event Center.

This isn't going to be a typical New Year's Resolution that one follows for a couple of weeks or a month - I'm committed to making this a way of life. This is going to be a change that has come about by a couple of things: Textile waste and bulging closets.
Christmas Tree recycling in South Lake Tahoe

Remove all decorations, and if over five feet tall, cut them in half, and leave them by garbage carts or bear boxes on collection day.
By leaving the trees out they can be recycled and not added to landfills.
Customers can also drop trees off at the South Tahoe Refuse Recovery Facility until January 15. They are located at 2121 Eloise Ave., South Lake Tahoe.

New California laws for 2025

A new California law will prohibit state-chartered banks from charging fees for withdrawals that are instantaneously declined. Assembly Bill 2017 applies to banks and credit unions that are regulated by the state; Gov. Gavin Newsom signed it in September. Low-income groups were joined by others in saying penalties for insufficient funds were “junk fees” and said getting rid of them will protect financially vulnerable consumers.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Greater Lake Tahoe area for Sunday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Snow accumulations at lake level can be up to 2 inches, Though 2 to 6 inches can be expected in some areas with up to 12 inches above 7000 feet west of Highway 89. Wind gusts up to 60 mph with ridge winds over 100 mph—wave heights 2 to 5 feet on Lake Tahoe.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/25/2024 - 8:21pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Services (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for areas above 6,000 feet starting December 25 at 10 p.m., and through noon on Friday, December 27.
There will be snow above 6000 feet with accumulations of 2 to 6 inches west of SR89 and up to 15 inches along the highest peaks. They expect up to 2 inches at lake level. Ridge winds will be gusting as high as 100 mph. Southwest winds 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph with wave heights between 2 to 4 feet on Lake Tahoe.
Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe raises $10,000 during Ugly Sweater Holiday Luncheon

Last week, the SISLT club held the annual Holiday Auction & Luncheon and raised over $10,000 for projects, scholarships, and programs supporting women and children in the South Lake Tahoe community.
They also held an Ugly Sweater Contest, resulting in a roomful of fun and festive attire.
Christmas Cheer in South Lake Tahoe receives $10,000 from Reno Toy Run

Since 1997, the Northern Nevada Confederation of Clubs and the Reno Toy Run have been able to help make a real difference for hundreds of Northern Nevada Families in need. They now include South Lake Tahoe in their giving.
In a check presentation on Christmas Eve, $10,000 was given to Christmas Cheer, the South Lake Tahoe nonprofit that supplies food and other necessities to those in need every week.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Office seizes drugs, arrests two suspects in Minden traffic stop

During the stop, deputies observed suspicious behavior from the vehicle’s occupants, prompting the use of a DCSO drug detection K9 to inspect the vehicle's exterior.

The Vail grant funds are awarded annually to non-profits in the communities where Vail Resorts are located, and Bread & Broth has been the grateful recipient of Vail funds to host 12 Monday Meals annually since 2011. With two Vail Resorts in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort alternate months hosting a monthly meal.
Incident on Comet Express Lift at Heavenly Monday morning sends five to hospital
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/23/2024 - 1:07pmUPDATE: Witnesses of Monday's incident at Heavenly's Comet Express Chairlift said two quad chairs could be seen stacked together near the base of the lift, according to Liftblog. Several guests on the ground below were seen being assisted by ski patrol with one guest pinned between the chairs.
On the social media platform, Reddit, commenters said the chair slid backward into another chair, with those on the front chair falling off.
There have been no other updates provided by Heavenly at this time.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The public is invited to comment on the scope of the environmental assessment (EA) for the new Barton Health hospital project at Stateline. The EA will evaluate any potential environmental impacts of the project and amendments required to the South Shore Area Plan (SSAP) for construction.
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), Barton Hospital, and the Douglas County Community Development Planning Division (Douglas County) are seeking public comments and will hold a scoping meeting on January 16.
Monday morning head-on collision injures four adults, two children
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/23/2024 - 9:21am1:40PM: The California Highway Patrol (CHP) in South Lake Tahoe has released a preliminary report on Monday morning's crash on SR89 near the intersection with SR88 at Pickett's Junction. At the time of the crash, the roads were very icy after overnight rain and freezing temperatures.
The report says, that due to the icy conditions, the driver of a northbound Chevy Tahoe was driving at an unsafe speed, lost control, and crossed into the southbound lane in the path of a Mazda.

Lake Level could see up to 2 inches though much of this storm will result in rain at the lake. Ridge winds could be gusting as high as 90 mph. Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph with wave heights between 1 to 3 feet on Lake Tahoe.

After 8-game winning streak, Knight Monsters drop two to Utah

On Friday: Despite mounting a late comeback, the Tahoe Knight Monsters fell for the first time in the month of December, losing 6-3 to the Utah Grizzlies at the Maverik Center.
It was their first loss since November 30 against the Idaho Steelheads, and the defeat broke Tahoe’s eight-game winning streak.
Marcella Foundation looking for Reading Pal volunteers in South Lake Tahoe

Bread & Broth opened during the holidays, other food distributions may change
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/21/2024 - 9:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are many food distribution sites to help those in South Lake Tahoe, but the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays will alter some operating hours.
Those looking to fill food needs should take note that Christmas Cheer is closed for the next two weeks - Dec. 24/25 and Dec. 31/Jan. 1. They will resume operations on Tuesday, January 7 (their normal days of operations are Tuesdays and Wednesdays).
Phoenix Food Pantry will be closed on Christmas Day and they may be closed on January 1 (they are waiting to see if volunteers are available that day).

Conservation Education and Fire Prevention staff, along with the Tallac Hotshots, had the amazing opportunity to present a holiday book reading complemented by crafts and activities for Boys and Girls Club students at Bijou Community and Meyers Elementary schools.
Active Christmas weather week ahead for Lake Tahoe; Wind advisory to start things off
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/20/2024 - 7:37pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a chance of a white Christmas, though chances for a wet Christmas at most elevations around Lake Tahoe is a better possibility.
Before Christmas, there are quick-moving storms this weekend that will bring stronger winds on Saturday, with light rain and high-elevation snow showers. A Wind Advisory is in place for Saturday, December 21 from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. for communities around Lake Tahoe. Expect winds from the south to southwest, 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Wave heights of 2 to 4 feet on Lake Tahoe.

The mission of Wreaths Across America is to “Remember" those who have served and are serving our nation and community; “Honor” them for their service; and “Teach” younger generations about the sacrifices made to keep our nation free.

TTD expands US50 route for New Year's Eve and other big events
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/20/2024 - 1:02pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) is expanding its popular Route 50 Express Service to include several high-profile events at the Tahoe Blue Event Center. In addition to New Year’s Eve festivities at Stateline and Tahoe Knight Monsters hockey games on December 27-29, 2024, and January 24-26, 2025, the service will also support two marquee 2025 events: the Lake Tahoe Reggae Winter Festival on February 15-16, 2025 and John Summit: Experts Only show on February 21-22, 2025.
