Personal use fuelwood permits now on sale at USFS office in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Personal use fuelwood permits are now on sale at the Forest Supervisor’s Office in South Lake Tahoe. Permits cost $20 per cord with a two-cord minimum purchase and a limit of 10 cords per household. Permits have specific conditions and complete information is provided when the permit is issued. Maps to designated cutting areas are also provided and must be in the permit holder’s possession along with the valid permit when cutting.

Teruyo (Terry) Kunibe ~ October 7, 1921 – June 11, 2024

Teruyo (Terry) Kunibe passed away peacefully at home on June 11, 2024. She was born in Perkins, California, to Japanese immigrants Tsuneichi Kimura and Tomiye Fukuoka on October 7, 1921. Terry is survived by her children: Charlene Braun (Andy), Susanne Sharpnack (John), Phyllis Powers (Terry), and Russell Kunibe (Shannon). She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Terry was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, as well as her sisters Emiko Kimura and Machiko Kimura, and her brother Kazuo Kimura.

Open burning banned around Lake Tahoe through summer

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Fire restrictions are now in place around the Lake Tahoe Basin and all solid fuel recreational and cooking fires and open burning are banned for the rest of the summer season. Solid fuel includes charcoal and wood. This also applies to parks and beach charcoal grilling areas, although federal and state land campfire restrictions may differ in the areas they operate.

South Tahoe Football Club teams claim tourney titles, second weekend of CUFA coming up

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The successful spring season for South Tahoe Futbol Club (STFC) continued last weekend at the Copa de las Sierras tournament in Truckee and over this past weekend in South Lake Tahoe.

The STFC Under-14 girls, coached by LTCC assistant Derick Gonzalez, claimed the Come Up for Air (CUFA) tournament title on Father’s Day Sunday with a 3-2 win over the Carson FC Venom. The team won all four of its games and outscored its opponents 18-3.

Journey of Hope rides through South Lake Tahoe on way to Washington, D.C.

Cooler start to the week at Lake Tahoe with 20 degree increase by the weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a drop in temperatures to start the week at Lake Tahoe, but nothing to worry about, it's only for two days. The much cooler conditions will be on Monday and Tuesday with Tuesday morning lows dipping below freezing in Sierra valleys, at freezing for the lake, and near freezing for colder western NV valleys.

But never fear! There is a warming trend for the second half of the week. Daytime highs for lower elevations will return to the 90s to around 100, and high 80s for Lake Tahoe by next weekend.

Firefighters extinguish second small fire near Lake Tahoe in three days

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What has been called the "Valley Fire" was reported at approximately 2:30 p.m. by someone who spotted it from the Echo Summit area. Firefighters from Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU), CAL FIRE Amador-El Dorado Unit, and Lake Valley Fire Protection District along with air support responded to the wildfire on National Forest land south of Christmas Valley.

The size of the fire is between one-quarter and one-half acre. Forward progress has been stopped and the hand line around the fire is almost complete.

The cause is under investigation.

Jason Tate Kershell ~ September 11, 1973 - June 5, 2024

Jason passed away unexpectedly and is survived by his father Henry, brother Hank, sister Tanya, aunt Wanda Mackey, and of course his beloved cat Mookie. Jason was preceded in death by his mother, Gloria Kershell, grandparents Eva and Bill Wolf, and his much-loved dogs Cuddles and Keira.

A resident of South Lake Tahoe since infancy, he graduated from South Tahoe High School in 1991.

Jason was a great lover of sports; many friends have great memories of watching sports (especially the Oakland A's), playing softball, throwing darts, playing pool, and bowling with him.

Hard Rock Lake Tahoe shooter sentenced to 55 years for 2023 death of local man

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The man who pleaded guilty to shooting and killing a South Lake Tahoe man at the Hard Rock casino at Lake Tahoe in 2023 has been sentenced to the Nevada Department of Corrections for a maximum of 55 years and will be eligible for parole after a minimum of 22 years.

Edgar Julian Delgado was sentenced under a plea agreement made when he pleaded guilty to First Degree Murder and admitted the allegation he used a deadly weapon in the commission of the offense back in April.

New parking system to be used near Zephyr Cove in hopes of alleviating parking woes

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - For years, beachgoers have been parking along US50 at Zephyr Cove to access the beaches at both Zephyr Cove Resort Beach and Zephyr Shoals. It was a nightmare to drive by the resort on popular beach days with cars left in no parking zones, tires over the white lines when parked, and people walking along US50 on both sides of the highway.

Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) conducted safety studies and last year added a stop light at US50 and Warrior Way and made the long stretch of highway from north of the light to the resort entrance as a "no parking" zone.

Two dead after plane crash south of Lake Tahoe

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Two people have been found dead after the plane they were in crashed in Alpine County, south of Lake Tahoe. On June 13 at approximately 1 a.m., deputies from the Alpine County Sheriff's Office were notified of an overdue aircraft that had left Lodi, Calif. on Wednesday afternoon.

Bass Camp Festival VII heads to Reno's Wingfield Park

Over 70 artists make up the lineup for this year's two-day Bass Camp Festival. The electronic dance music (EDM) festival has moved to Wingfield Park in Reno July 27-28. For four years, the South Shore of Lake Tahoe was host to the event.

Sen. Padilla introduces bill to improve reservation process and experience on federal lands

Day-use reservations planned for Sand Harbor State Park

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Nevada Division of State Parks has announced they will roll out a pilot day-use reservation parking system at Sand Harbor State Park in mid-August before moving to a permanent system in 2025.

This new system aims to reduce traffic congestion on Highway 28, improve trip planning, and alleviate overcrowding at this beloved Lake Tahoe destination in Incline Village.

El Dorado County Supervisors unanimously approve $1B budget

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - During their Tuesday meeting, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the Fiscal Year 2024-25 Recommended Budget of $1.03 billion to fund the County’s programs and services for the coming year.

The budget is $74 million, seven percent less than last year’s adopted budget of $1.1 billion, and reflects all governmental funds, including special revenue funds, and excludes special districts and proprietary funds. $416 million of that amount is the County’s general fund which funds public safety and general government services.

South Tahoe High School seniors celebrate graduation at their elementary schools

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Buses left South Tahoe High School (STHS) Monday morning with a big mission to accomplish - delivering the graduating seniors back to where their education began in South Lake Tahoe.

This was the inaugural senior walk during graduation week in South Lake Tahoe, walking the halls in their cap and gown before doing the same across the STHS football field.

One by one, the seniors filed out of the buses onto the school grounds, greeted by cheers from the students and teachers at those elementary schools.

Emergency response to possible gas leak near South Tahoe High Stadium

UPDATE: The gas leak situation has been resolved near the South Tahoe High Stadium, and it is now safe. All first responders have been released.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a possible gas leak at the old Mt. Tallac High School next to the South Tahoe High School stadium. Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has evacuated the area. Emergency responders are on site and waiting for Southwest Gas to have the gas shut off.

Appleseed Academy now occupies the building with Mt. Tallac High moving to their new location at the Al Tahoe Education site.
