One of those motels, the El Nido Motel, has been renovated and is now called the Bird's Nest supportive housing community, centrally located at 2215 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Seasonal closure of Upper Truckee Marsh through July - no dogs allowed
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/03/2022 - 11:40pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The California Tahoe Conservancy has announced the start of the annual seasonal dog closure at the Upper Truckee Marsh. From May 1 through July 31, people must keep their dogs out of the sensitive marsh habitat to protect birds, such as the red-winged blackbird, and other wildlife during the breeding season.
Beginning August 1, leashed dogs may again enter the closed areas of the Marsh.
The Conservancy-owned Cove East property, west of the Upper Truckee River, remains open for year-round leashed dog access.

Volunteers fan out across the Truckee River Watershed to take water samples from creeks, streams, and smaller lakes, as well as Lake Tahoe itself, to get a snapshot at one moment in time of the water quality of the Tahoe-Truckee watershed.

Caltrans doing work Wednesday on I-80 between Truckee and Nevada state line

From 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, Caltrans will have the #2 (right) lane of I-80 eastbound closed from just east of the Hinton Overcrossing to Floriston.

Fire starts in Rabe Meadow at Lake Tahoe, quickly doused

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) and its Zephyr crew and new Shoreline crew wildland firefighters were able to quickly jump on the fire Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 05/01/2022 - 9:02amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a wind advisory for Lake Tahoe on Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with gusts up to 100 mph possible across the Sierra ridge.
Winds will be from the west, 20-30 mph with gusts at lake level up to 55 mph expected, with stronger gusts in wind-prone areas.
Waves are expected to be 2 to 4 feet on area lakes in the Greater Lake Tahoe Area, Greater Reno-Carson City- Minden Area and Western Nevada Basin and Range including Pyramid Lake.
Bomb threat at South Tahoe High Friday disrupts school, nothing found

SLTPD searched the campus and nothing suspicious was found.
"This event was disheartening and disruptive, it's just very unfortunate that someone would do this," said Lake Tahoe Unified School Disrict PIO Shannon Chandler.
Single lane closures on Kingsbury Grade as NDOT conducts repairs
Submitted by paula on Sat, 04/30/2022 - 10:40pmSTATELINE, Nev. - Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will be replacing roadside drainage berms and guardrail along Kingsbury Grade beginning May 2.
From 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays from May 2 through mid-June, one-way traffic will be in place on sections of the roadway as traffic flaggers and pilot cars alternate directions of travel. The work will take place on small sections of the Carson Valley side of Kingsbury Grade.

Junior Giants is a free non-competitive and coed baseball program for children ages 5-18. The program offers equipment, uniforms, program incentives, and coaches' training.
Anyone can play. Junior Giants help kids lead, succeed and have fun. The season runs from June 13 to August 15.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The big day has been set by South Tahoe Refuse and Clean Tahoe: The annual return of $5 Dump Day! It's the one day a year the community can get rid of all the unwanted, unused stuff in the garage, the house, and the backyard, for just $5 a load.
On June 11 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., California residents can bring in a carload to South Tahoe Refuse. The cost is $10 for Nevada residents.

He was asked to write a poem about something important, and he chose the Caldor Fire. Angelo has visited the Lake Tahoe area for Christmas and Spring Break for the past 11 years and plans on attending Lake Tahoe Community College.

Palisades Tahoe extends operations to May 30
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/29/2022 - 6:51pmPalisades Tahoe has announced the extension of its ski season to a new projected closing of May 30, 2022. With April bringing not showers, but seven feet of new snow, the resort said they will once again have Lake Tahoe’s longest winter season.
After this week, Palisades is moving to weekends only — that’s Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only until Memorial Day Weekend, at which time they will also operate on Monday. Lifts will be open from 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. for now, but if they start to see significant snowmelt, they may shift hours to 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
City prepared to reopen Bijou Golf Course if parking lot lease agreement can be negotiated
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/29/2022 - 6:08pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Council is being asked to authorize a new three-year lease agreement with Bydand Unlimited Trust for the driveway and parking lot adjacent to Bijou Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe.
The City of South Lake Tahoe owns and maintains the 9-hole golf course, but does not own the driveway and parking area which is owned by Mary McCall and the trust.
At its Tuesday, May 3 meeting, Council will consider approving a lease similar to one that has been in place since 1983, except for the last two years when the course was closed due to COVID-19 safety concerns.
South Lake Tahoe man dies in crash on Black Bart Avenue
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/29/2022 - 3:56pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 75-year-old South Lake Tahoe man died Friday afternoon after driving off the roadway and striking a power pole. At about 1:20 p.m., the local man was heading northbound in a black Ford F-150 on Black Bart Avenue when, for unknown reasons, left the roadway. It is unknown at this time if speed played a factor or if it was a medical condition.
The driver was unresponsive at the scene and was transported to Barton Memorial Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries at 2:17 p.m.
The driver has been identified as Joseph B. Hansen.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has released Ponderosa, Bodie, Thelma and Louise.
LTWC thanked CDFW for their partnership, planning, and preparation for the big release dates.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The Food Bank of El Dorado County is hosting an evening of fun for the community on Saturday, April 30 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This will be an evening of live music, food, beverages, and the groundbreaking of the new Emergency Resource Center.
This is not a fundraiser, and everything will be free of charge.
All Caldor Fire survivors attending must be preregistered in order to receive monetary assistance.
Nonprofits, businesses, service clubs, agencies, and individuals wishing to have a booth at the event are welcome.
Van Sickle Bi-State Park opening delayed a few days for Gondola maintenance
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/28/2022 - 5:09pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Mountain Resort has moved from winter operations to a focus on summer activities, including a larger operational footprint starting in June, of which its iconic Gondola is a focal point.
Part of Heavenly's preparation work includes completion of annual maintenance on the Gondola, and this year, it requires access to several Gondola towers located within the Van Sickle Bi-State Park. This will necessitate the closure of a portion of the park in the interest of safety (including road access), beginning May 2, with an anticipated end date of May 5.
Sand Harbor boat ramp to remain closed for the summer, Cave Rock to operate with extended hours

Beginning on May 27 at 6:00 a.m., the Sand Harbor boat ramp parking lot will be opened to provide a limited number of parking spaces for vehicles with kayaks and paddleboards, as well as parking for oversized vehicles.
Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe Thursday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/28/2022 - 8:49amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for the Lake Tahoe area for Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Expect winds from the west, 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected. Waves on the lake will be 1 to 3 feet.
Small boats, kayaks, and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.
The forecast is for sunny skies with a high near 50 with a low tonight of 25.
Gusty winds are expected to return Saturday, and at this time gust up to 25 mph are expected.
El Dorado County Supervisors sending TOT increase to the voters; allocate $7.6M in current TOT funds
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/27/2022 - 10:35pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - During their special budget meeting Monday, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors approved an allocation of Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) funds and approved a ballot measure that would increase the TOT tax in El Dorado County.
They will be asking voters to support a special tax increase charged to those using motels, hotels, and vacation home rentals for the West Slope, going from 10 percent TOT to 12 percent TOT, and from 10 percent to 14 percent in the unincorporated areas of Lake Tahoe.

LTWC’s animal care team and seasonal volunteers care for hundreds of wild birds and animals at their South Lake Tahoe facility. Animal care teams provide the much-needed medical care, sustenance, and enrichment - all skills to ensure their patients’ successful return to the wild.

annual Wildfire Safety Expo on Saturday, May 14 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at South Tahoe Middle School.
The Wildfire Safety Expo is a free community event intended to provide information on how to be fire safe during this upcoming wildfire season. Each year, wildfire behavior progressively becomes more ferocious. Living in a mountain town means we need to be extra vigilant with our preparedness. Fatal wrong way crash on US-395 at Airport Road in Minden

Troopers with the Nevada State Police (NSP) responded to the scene at 4:07 a.m. after receiving reports of a wrong-way crash on US-395 southbound at Airport Road in Minden.
UC Davis: Microplastics can carry land-based parasites to ocean, affecting wildlife and human health

The study, published today in the journal Scientific Reports, is the first to connect microplastics in the ocean with land-based pathogens. It found that microplastics can make it easier for disease-causing pathogens to concentrate in plastic-contaminated areas of the ocean.

On September 25, 2021, Bass was driving his Tesla back to South Lake Tahoe when the California Highway Patrol (CHP) saw his car parked near Twin Bridges at 2:30 a.m. with Bass asleep behind the wheel.

Closer to home, Tahoe City, which has weather records dating back to 1910, set a record for the driest January through March.
On March 31, 2022, the National Weather Service (NWS) drought monitor noted that 40 percent of California and 36 percent of Nevada is suffering from extreme drought, with severe drought conditions evident in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
El Dorado County disperses almost $2M to area non-profits to help recoup COVID-19 losses

The grants were approved during the board's budget meeting on Monday to help the nonprofits recoup some of their losses.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is Saturday, April 30, but in South Lake Tahoe the event will be much bigger with information and prescription lock bags from the Tahoe Alliance for Safe Kids (TASK), and the Sierra Harm Reduction Coalition (SHRC) will be on hand to provide free Narcan nasal spray and fentanyl test strips.
