Fire burns building at Donner Ski Ranch, comes close to chair lift

A Friday night fire at Donner Ski Ranch has burned one building and came close to ski lifts. When firefighters from Truckee Fire District and CalFire Nevada-Yuba-Placer (NEU) arrived at the scene the fire was already well established, according to their post on social media.
The fire was in an area not accessible by vehicles and firefighters responded on a snowcat and snowmachine. Nearby trees were cut down to prevent fire spread to the nearby chair lift.
The building was located at the bottom of Chair 5 at the resort.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) is preparing for South Lake Tahoe's upcoming Point-in-Time (PIT) Count on Thursday, February 24 from 5:00 a.m. - 7:00 a.m. and volunteers are needed. The PIT Count is conducted once every two years to gather data on how many homeless people sleep outside in winter.
Police investigation opens after body found in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A wildlife photographer out taking photos Saturday morning found the remains of a person in the snowy meadow along Trout Creek in South Lake Tahoe.
The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the area behind U.S. Bank and Rite Aid after receiving a call from the photographer just before 9:30 a.m. on January 22, 2022.
According to SLTPD Sgt. Doug Sentell, at this point they are unsure if the deceased person is male or female, how long they have been in the snow, and how they died.
Prescribed burn operations around Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) continues prescribed fire operations if conditions and weather are favorable. Operations are expected to continue throughout the winter season to help land managers reduce hazardous fuels that can feed unwanted wildfires. Smoke will be present.

There have been 308 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths recorded since yesterday in El Dorado County. This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 22,640. This does not include all at-home tests that may have been positive.
There are now 141.3 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the county.

Join Alpine County Community Development on Thursday, January 27 for an internet-based video and phone conference to learn about “Living with Bears,” hosted by Shelly Blair, wildlife biologist for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The program is only virtual, starting at 5:30 p.m. There is no in-person attendance option.
It’s not uncommon to see bears in and around communities located near bear habitats. A bear sighting alone is not a cause for concern.
Free at-home COVID-19 test kits at local library and from government

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A limited supply of COVID-19 home test kits is available to El Dorado County residents at local public libraries.
The iHealth COVID-19 Rapid Home Test kits are limited to one per person, and a maximum of two test kits per household. The kits will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
“We greatly appreciate our partnership with the El Dorado County Public Libraries to help make these home test kits available to residents,” said El Dorado County Public Health Officer, Dr. Nancy Williams.

Lake Wind Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe starting Friday morning

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for the greater Lake Tahoe area from 7:00 a.m. Friday to 4:00 a.m. Saturday.
Northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected with gusts up to 40 mph. Waves on Lake Tahoe will be 2 to 4 feet.
Small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.
Lake Tahoe Boulevard Class I Bicycle Trail approved, construction starts in May

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During its meeting on Tuesday, the South Lake Tahoe City Council approved the final expenses for the Lake Tahoe Boulevard Class 1 Bicycle Trail from Viking Way to the Y.
The lane configuration has been in place for the past year, creating one lane in each direction and a center turn lane, now the actual bicycle lanes with paving and striping will be constructed.

UPDATE: Due to the spread of Omicron in the South Lake Tahoe community, LTCC is postponing the public opening of the Faculty & Staff Art Exhibition. When it’s safe to welcome the community indoors to enjoy the show, a new date will be announced.

City looks at creating ordinance to allow movable tiny homes

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council took the first steps in creating an ordinance that will allow park-model RVs less than 400 square feet in size on parking pads at South Lake Tahoe properties to help alleviate the housing crisis.
The Council addressed several issues but since some major adjustments to the staff's proposal were requested, Council will vote on a first draft at a future meeting.

UC Davis study shows resilience in frequent-fire forests may require significantly reducing tree densities

What does a “resilient” forest look like in California’s Sierra Nevada? A lot fewer trees than we’re used to, according to a study of frequent-fire forests from the University of California, Davis.
More than a century ago, Sierra Nevada forests faced almost no competition from neighboring trees for resources. The tree densities of the late 1900s would astonish most Californians today. Because of fire suppression, trees in current forests live alongside six to seven times as many trees as their ancestors did — competing for less water amid drier and hotter conditions.

Women in Leadership event rescheduled due to rise in COVID-19 cases

In light of recent impacts to the community stemming from the Omicron variant and considering how it may affect attendees as leaders, business owners, parents, and community members, the Women in Leadership event date has been rescheduled from Wednesday, February 9 to Wednesday, March 2.
Tahoe Chamber and the Women in Leadership Task Force values and prioritizes health, safety, and overall well-being. In anticipation of International Women’s Day on March 8, they look forward to connecting in person with the same workshops and expert guest speakers at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With COVID-19 cases continuing to surge not only in South Lake Tahoe but around the country, some new temporary restrictions are going to be added to the functions of Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD.
It is the largest surge in cases within the LTUSD community that has been seen since the pandemic began.
LTUSD will be implementing some changes to achieve their main goal of keeping students in the classroom and the district open five days per week.

Keep Tahoe Blue says Lahontan Water Board approval of Tahoe Keys Control Methods Test on the right path

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lahontan Water Quality Control Board voted unanimously on January 13 to approve a test of methods to tackle the growing infestation of aquatic invasive weeds in the Tahoe Keys. The final approval will be needed from Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). They will hold a public hearing on January 26 and possibly take action on the methods test.

LTUSD reopens for in-person instruction Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will reopen for in-person instruction on Tuesday, January 18. They closed classrooms on Thursday and Friday due to a rise in COVID-19 cases among staff and students.
They will continue to monitor the health of staff to ensure LTUSD can remain operational. Staying home if ill will help the school community return to a healthy status.
20-foot snowman created in Lake Tahoe yard

STATELINE, Nev. - With record amounts of snow around Lake Tahoe in December, many took to the slopes, spent time shoveling, stayed by the fire, or a little bit of all three.
South Shore resident Ricky Reich decided to build a 20-foot snowman in his front yard on Irvin Drive in Stateline with all of that fresh snow. With sunny, warmer days he needs to go out and clean it up a bit.
Ricky is no stranger to big snowmen and has previously made his snowmen with a sled run (see video here).

The webinars will be held each Wednesday in January at 11 a.m. PST and hosted by Denise Medved, creator of Ageless Grace.
DCSO seeking public's help in finding those responsible for Pacific Gas Station burglary

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCS0) is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the theives involved in a burglary at Pacific Gas located at 1479 U.S. Highway 395 Gardnerville, Nevada.
On or about December 23, 2021, Pacific Gas Station was burglarized and all r leads have been exhausted, prompting DCSO to ask for the public’s assistance at this time.
The person(s) responsible stole a large inventory of various brands of tobacco products.
Wind and waves cause significant damage to Tahoe Douglas Fire's Marine 24

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - A recent Lake Tahoe storm with wind gusts of 65 mph and above and waves 6-8 feet high caused damage to Marine 24, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District's (TDFPD) fire and rescue boat.
The winds caused the boat to crash against the dock, causing significant damage. The boat then floated to the shoreline.
"We expect the boat to be out of service for fire and rescue missions for
the foreseeable future, while Tahoe Douglas personnel work diligently to get Marine 24 back afloat and fully operational," said TDFPD Fire Marshal Eric Guevin in a statement.

EL DORADO COUNTY
There have been 335 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths recorded since yesterday in El Dorado County. This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 21,025. This does not include at-home tests that may have been positive.
There are now 124.9 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the county.
GoFundMe set up for South Lake Tahoe woman with brain tumors

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe woman, Julie Zeid, has been diagnosed with two malignant brain tumors and a GoFundMe account has been set up in her name.
Julie went to the emergency room just after New year's Day, thinking perhaps she had a stroke. Instead, a CT scan unveiled a mass and she was transferred to the University of California San Francisco (UCSF).
