Opinion: Why I'm running for Lake Tahoe Community College Trustee

I am running as a candidate for Lake Tahoe Community College Trustee in District 4 because I believe a good education is one of the most important services a community can provide to its citizens.
Lake Tahoe Community College is in an extraordinary and unprecedented position with the passing of Measure F two years ago. I am committed to the prospect of offering students an affordable four-year degree program, upgrading our current facilities, building the University center and exploring the possibility of on campus housing for students.
For over 30 years I have been part of the South Lake Tahoe community. During this time I have been an educator, business owner and community volunteer. I have seen the importance of public education and want to work to keep improving the educational and personal experiences offered by Lake Tahoe Community College.
Prior to teaching, I worked at LTCC as a program assistant in the Health/Physical Education/Athletics department and also in the Admissions and Records department. In these positions, and through various committees that I served on, I gained firsthand experience as to how our college is run. I would bring to the Board the unique perspective of this experience.
Outside of my professional experience, I have been involved with many organizations including Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, High Sierra ASA (Amateur Softball Association), and STAT (Saving Tahoe Athletic Teams). As a member of Soroptimist I served on the board, chaired committees, and was an essential part of “A Fighting Chance,” a community program dedicated to giving children the tools to avoid and escape abduction. My involvement in High Sierra ASA spanned ten years during which I was both a board member and coach. At a time of budget cuts, I helped STAT raise close to $200,000 to fund the athletic programs at South Tahoe High School and South Tahoe Middle School.
My husband John and I have operated a successful business for 28 years. We have 3 adult children. My experiences in this community, and my attendance at board meetings have led me to seek election to the Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees. LTCC is an integral part of the community and I believe that I have the qualifications, community insight, and work ethic necessary to serve on the Board. I ask for your vote.
I can be reached at nancy4ltcc@gmail.com if you have any questions or comments on my candidacy.
