Fishing report through Nov. 2

Here is the fishing report for the week of Oct. 26 to Nov. 2. This report covers rivers, streams and lakes in Nevada, the Sierra, Northern California and Southern Oregon.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:

Surface Temps at 66.5 degrees, and will continue to cool. Clarity has been reduced to about 10 ft.
Afternoon breezes found only the deep V-hulls working in the waves, while pontoon boats were forced out of the action.
And with rain in the forecast for midweek, expect surface temps to continue to decline. This cooling can only help the morning bite, which has been just 'Ok' the last couple of days. It's been the late afternoon bite that has been producing bigger fish and more of them.
Fish have been closer to the surface with the cool down and a little breeze helps defuses that sunlight, so some of the best fish have come down as little as 10 ft. Last week you needed to be down 30+ ft. to get into them...not anymore, good news for the lead core trollers.
Here's the scoop around Lake Almanor. A-Frame, Great Salmon action, Browns and Rainbow are there too. What makes the A-Frame special? Springs, several of them.
Bait fish are drawn into this spot followed by the feeders.
Anchovy tails suspended 4 to 6 ft. off the bottom for Salmon; Crawlers, mealworms for Browns and Rainbows.
The Salmon look like the 2 to 3 years old and have been going 16 to 18" and thick. Browns and Rainbows have been bigger...up to 4 lbs.
However, if the bait balls at the A-Frame are thick, don't waste your time mooching,  because they are not going to find your needle in a haystack full of food. Start trolling around the area to get fish lurking around trying to find the bait balls.
Needlefish and Shiners in nickel, silver, & white, downrigger down no deeper that 35 ft. all look like smelt running through the water... Ka-Pow, we started out with a triple, followed by a double, and limited out with a bunch of single hook-ups.
The Hamilton Branch powerhouse is running both chutes. The additional flows have stacked fish out in front of the mouth.
White jigs and bait have been effective, producing some nice fish in the 3 lb. range. 3 and 4 lb. Salmon are around the area as well. Reports have been  picked up of a 4.8 lb. King there with a nickel/hammer finish, 1/6 oz. Speedy Shiner, rigged down 25 ft.
Canyon Dam, if you can just discipline yourself enough to stay there, you will get fish trolling. Canyon Dam has the largest concentrations of smelt and stands to reason there are also the largest concentrations of fish about. Make no mistake about it...it's all about the smelt. The smelt are thick, clouds of bait fish the size of school buses!
Brown Trout pre-spawn activity should begin soon, especially with the incoming weather systems and shorter days.
Look for places like Rec. 2, Prattville, near the towers, Big Springs, to take off. Cured roe is a Brown Trout favorite treat. Also white jigs are going to get hit as well. There are reports of lots of hits off jigs while on anchor bait fishing and lots of fish following it back to the boat... a couple of the Browns were HUGE...not hitting, but giving it a good look! What a sight!  Seeing these big fish coming up from the dark depths below...looking to crush that jig... Let’s leave you with that visual.
Good luck, and stay thirsty my friends.

BISHOP AREA, CALIF:
Rick and Patti Apted - Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425) (www.lakesabrinaboatlanding.com) reports:
Sabrina Lake: Well, this is it – the last report of the season – and what a season it was.
We’d like to thank you, all – we have the best customers!
And THANK YOU to all your local papers that carry our weekly fishing reports – especially the INYO REGISTER – you are the GREATEST – and can’t forget WESTERN OUTDOOR NEWS – and the fishing wouldn’t have been anything without the GREAT stocking from the DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME – and then there was SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON for keeping the Lake pretty much full – THANK  YOU, THANK YOU and THANK YOU!
The weather and catching at the Lake continues to be unbelievable with temperatures in the mid-60s with slight breezes and lots of limits coming from the Lake, but temperatures are about to change – by Tuesday, the highs are expected to be in the mid-40s – that sounds more like Brown fishing.
Be sure to check www.weather.gov and enter ASPENDELL, CA on the site and it will give you a fairly good hint at the weather or check in with Howard at www.Mammothweather.com.
We have a new addition to the family – Agent Ninety-nine or A.N.N. for short. She’s a Border Collie – McNab mix – She came from a ranch down in Lone Pine and her sister is a short ride away at Bishop Pack Outfitters – the pack station up at North Lake.
Maxwell was a bit on the jealous side, but is warming up to her, while Lo just takes her in stride.
Nimrod pretty much just stays up high and growls like a dog. It could prove to be an interesting time.
CAMPGROUNDS ARE CLOSING IN THE BISHOP CREEK CANYON – only BitterBrush stays open year around, but with NO water available at the campground.
Ended up making 228 homemade pies this year – we’ll see where we end up next year. Speaking of next year – the fun will being on the last Saturday of April – the 28th at 7:00am.
Looking forward to seeing you next year!

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
The reservoir has been a bit hit and miss lately, seems as though the fish are very spread out and not very concentrated in any one area lately. If you work it and move around as needed you should be able to get into some fish. We've had some good reports from float-tubing fly anglers stripping streamers down near the dam as well as periodic good reports from shore anglers down there.
Bait anglers are having limited success on fish up to about 3 or 4 pounds, they've been moving around the lake quite a bit to increase their numbers.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions: Great. Water temps stable.
Fishing Conditions: Keep moving, the fish are quite spread out right now. Stick to streamers mainly along the outskirts of weedbeds.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF:
John Voss of the Caples Lake Resort (209-258-8888) (www.capleslakeresort.com) reports:
The Weather is forecast to be incredible for the next week — so we are extending our closing to October 30th!
We have cabins open but have closed the lodge for remodeling.
The fishing is great –look at that nice 4 pound rainbow caught back in emigrant cove off a crawler.
The aspens are a couple of weeks late —so they are in their prime.
Store and Marina are open 9 to 5 during the week and 8 to 5 on the weekend.
COME ON UP AND ENJOY THE GREAT WEATHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CHETCO RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Boat and bank anglers are starting to pick up Chinook in the estuary.
Most of the fishing pressure is from the tip of the jetties to the entrance of the boat basin. The Chinook fishery is just getting started and with continued dry weather anglers can expect the estuary fishery to only get better.
Temporary regulations in effect beginning Aug. 1, 2011:
Mainstem Chetco River upstream of BPA Powerline crossing at river mile 2.2 is closed to all angling including trout through Nov. 4, 2011.
Tributaries to the Chetco River remain open for trout through Oct. 31, 2011 as per Southwest Zone Regulations.

COMINS LAKE, WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
A few bass have been showing up, but no trout due to the pike infestation. Pike fishing has also been poor.
There are few if any trout left in the lake also due to the pike infestation.

CONVICT LAKE, CALIF:
Jen Heintzelman of Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260) (www.convictlakeresort.com) reports:
Catch of the Week: Chis O’Keefe and Jayla Beasley from Malibu, California caught a 3 lb. 3 oz. Alper's Trout on White/Red Trout Teaser near the Marina.
Weather:
The weather has been just beautiful this week and will continue next week with sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s and high 50s.  Just perfect fall weather with the colors at their peak. Monday could be a bit breezy but the rest of the week looks like low winds.
Here is a local site that is usually accurate www.mammothweather.com.

Tactics/Bait: The lake is producing some 3+ pounders and fish are being caught all around the lake with salmon eggs working well this week along with nightcrawlers and Power Bait.
If trolling go 6 or 7 colors.  Fish are being caught all around the lake this week.
Locations to try are the Inlet, Outlet, North Shore, South Shore, Creek, Jetty, Handicap Pier and Hangman's Tree.
Here is a list of other baits/lures that can be productive: TroutKrilla, Trout Teasers, Midges, Panther Martin, Needlefish, Thomas Bouyants, green Woolly Bugger, White Mini Jig and Power Bait.

Stocking: DFG has stocked again this week.
Convict Lake Resort will stock 100 lbs. of Alper's 2-3lb. Trout this week.

Sunrise - Sunset: Sunrise this week 7:10 am - 7:16 am and Sunset 6:11 pm - 6:03 pm.
Derbies: The Eastern Sierra Second Summer Derby & Fundraiser September 7th to November 15th with $4,462 prizes at Convict Lake and $35,702 in the overall competition.  You can win a 14' Fully Equipped Gregor Boat and more! Buy more raffle tickets to increase your chances of winning the boat, all proceeds go to the Eastern Sierra Fishing Coalition stocking program.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions: Variable. There is still some algae around the lake moving throughout the day with the breeze but not enough to impact fishing much.
Lake continues to drop but is still only down about 5 feet from high water point. Cold nights are killing weeds quickly but still more weeds this time of year than I have ever seen.
Fishing Conditions: Good to Excellent. Small fish are everywhere including the 280,000 fingerlings just dumped in at the Fish Camp. With some more bigger Rainbows and Cutthroats scheduled before the end of the season, the grand total will be over 500,000. 'Back to the good ol' days!
McGee still has some good fish but spread out.
No recent reports on Sandy or Hilton as Green Banks and Leighton are producing a good mix of 8" to 24" fish daily and I've been hopping back and forth with clients and no time to go "shopping" for another hot spot.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
Jim and Jeanne of the J & J Grizzly Store (530-832-0270) (www.grizzlystore.portola-ca.com) reports:
Fishing has been fantastic the past few days.
Same lures/bait/flies plus the Red Rainbow Runner; as last week. Had a group of fly fishermen in from San Jose and they had a wonderful weekend.
Weather is holding, nice during the day, cold at night.
Steve, one of our campers caught several nice 3 pounders trolling with a Dick Nite Copper Red Head.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Lake has cooled considerably with recent snow and today's rain and snow will combine to get things going strong. Weather is projected to go from low 50s to mid 70s and back to 50s this next week, so dress appropriately.
Fish are getting active on the north end already and fishing should be good to great until we can no long get on the lake.
The lake is fuller now than most springs and will be very healthy this next year. Now, if we can just get them to plant some more fish and the snails rebound, the world will be a good place.
Courtesy of Don at Fly Fish with Don.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
The Truckee River Outfitters (775-853-7368) (info@renoflyshop.com):
The Blood Midges are hatching and trout are cruising the shallows in search of them early in the day.
While sight fishing can be very exciting and productive, fishing a couple of Blood Midges under an indicator in 5 – 10 feet of water is probably the most successful method.
During mid day try a sinking line with your favorite leech or Bugger along the edge of weed beds.  Snails and Sheep Creek Specials are also good patterns for this time of year.

FALL RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
The fishing on Fall River has been good all day, every day. Start your day off with rising fish eating various Baetis and PMDs. Some anglers are getting tight to rainbows throwing # 18 Mayfly Cripples on 7x. It is easier and more productive to fish sub surface drifting or swinging nymphs like Pheasant Tails or Red Copper Johns. Olive or black leech patterns will work if nothing else!

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Wiggin’s Trading Post at Chilcoot (530-993-4683) reports:
What a great weekend for fishing.
Bob Parry’s grandkids, Ashori (age 6) and Asheerah (age 3) of Sacramento caught five rainbow trout near Big Cove, using nightcrawlers and marshmallows at first and then changing to Rainbow Power Bait. All were at least 17 to 22 inches long, weighing 1 ½ to 2 pounds.
Hunter Powell (age 12) of Reno, caught 6 trout, weighing at least 1 1/4 pound each. He was at Lunker Point using nightcrawlers and white marshmallows, and it was early in the morning.
Eric Deliz of Reno caught an 18 ½ inch rainbow trout at Snallygaster last Sunday using nightcrawlers.
Fishing has been good all around the lake, most fishermen have been using nightcrawlers and marshmallows, some have had better luck using Power Bait( rainbow or chartreuse).
Fall colors booming in the canyon, enjoy a ride up to and around the lake.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
The Truckee River Outfitters (775-853-7368) (info@renoflyshop.com):
Fishing continues to be very good at Frenchmen’s.
Lots of fish are in 4 – 10 feet of water and are readily eating flies.
Snails, small to medium sized Nymphs, Blood Midges, Sheep Creek Specials, leeches and Woolly Buggers all have been producing.
The weather couldn’t be much nicer and the water temps in the shallows are perfect for the fish right now.
Floating lines work well early and late in the day or with an indicator set up.
Use intermediate and faster sinking lines during mid day as the fish tend to go a little deeper to escape the direct sunlight.

FULLER LAKE, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

HAT CREEK, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
The smooth, clear waters of Hat Creek harbor some of the most sophisticated rainbow trout anywhere. It's a beautiful time of year to stroll the banks of Hat, scanning for rising fish.
Anglers fishing the PH #2 riffle have been doing best with small # 18-22 Midge and Mayfly patterns, like brown and olive Gidgets, black and olive Glass-bead Micro Mayflies. Small green Mayfly hatches (BWOs, PEDs) in the morning and late afternoon should produce a few rise forms along the flat-water section below PH #2.

HOBART RESERVOIR, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports: Season closed, will reopen May 1st.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions: Flows at 33 CFS as of 10/21.
Fishing Conditions: Great. Water has cleared and the fishing is once again excellent. Better in the morning to early afternoon.
Huge Caddis hatches all day long. Fishing Caddis drys in the middle of the day having best results. For Nymphing fish very small Midges and Baetis. Some crane flies around as well. Fish Baetis patterns on cloudy days.
Fish at the near bank, and the lanes in between the weeds.

KIRMAN LAKE, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
Still getting some good reports from Kirman this week, Scud patterns and small leech patterns have been the best thing going lately.
It sounds like the brookies have moved into the shallow water near the lagoon to try to spawn so it's been better fishing to move out into deeper water away from the shore.
Some Cutts have been making a showing that are well over 20 inches and the brookies are ranging from about 12 inches to nearly 19.

KLAMATH RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
The upper Klamath near Yreaka, CA. has promising conditions. It's early to offer any reports on this stream, but we know you are thinking about it. And so you should! The results of a day on the Klamath just downstream of Irongate Dam includes some dark, Jack Salmon (Juvenile King Salmon), and a 1/2 pounder or four. Okay, far from bad, but wait until later this month!

LEWISTON LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
This great still water/spring creek-like destination always gets ignored at this time of year! And why not! Lewiston Lake feeds the Trinity River where anglers clamber for a spot to cast a line and catch one of angling's "finest".
But over on Lewiston, the rainbow trout average 16". Fish over 22" are common. At this time of year, the fish are keying on Midges, BOWs, a diminishing supply of Callibaetis and Tricos. There are a lot of Scuds and aquatic snails in this reservoir and the rainbows eat'm up. Select some flies off the menu to the right and spend a day or two fishing this perfect lake.

MAMMOTH LAKES BASIN, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
George Lake - Mary Lake – Mamie Lake – Twin Lakes:
Water conditions:
Great.
Fishing conditions: Great. Fishing is better in the middle of the day. Colder mornings and evenings this time of year.
Stripping streamers working best with a Nymph trailer.
Try fishing some stimulators and Callibaetis dries at the inlets, you're almost always going to see rising fish there now.

MARLETTE LAKE, CARSON CITY & WASHOE COUNTIES, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Season closed, reopens July 15, 2011.

MASON VALLEY W.M.A., LYON COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Fort Churchill Cooling Ponds: Season Closed, reopens February 11th, 2011.
Hinkson Slough: Seasoned closed, will reopen on February 11th, 2011.
North Pond: Seasoned closed, will reopen on February 11th, 2011.

OREGON PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
The Recreational ocean salmon fishery is now closed.
On Oct. 1 anglers will be able to fish bottomfish at all depths.
Anglers are reporting that bottomfishing has been spotty.
Anglers fishing from boats may no longer retain Cabezon because the quota of 15.8 metric tons will have been met.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Upper Owens River Water Conditions: Good. As of 10/21 flows stable at 76 CFS above the Hot Creek confluence.
Fishing Conditions: Good. Mostly resident small fish but occasional large lake fish. Good dry action early to mid morning and late, better Nymphing through the day.
Still a few hoppers around, and streamer action has been decent when nothing else is going on.
Owens River Gorge Water conditions: Great. Flow: 45 CFS. This is a permanent flow required to be maintained by LADWP. Water is clear and cold.
Fishing Conditions: Excellent. The Stinging Nettles are roughly 5-6 feet tall. Just a warning. If you can get past them, we're hearing the fishing is quite good.
Lower Owens River Water Conditions: Poor. Flows still raging at 595 CFS as of 10/21.
Fishing Conditions: Fair. Female Trico’s in the AM, Spinners towards noon. Big Caddis around all day. With Trico males in the evenings. Fishing is challenging at best...Try to fish slower water on the inside of bends, high sticking whenever possible.

PYRAMID LAKE, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
The Truckee River Outfitters (775-853-7368) (info@renoflyshop.com):
Fishing at Pyramid has been spotty. Some days are good and others not so good. Finding any concentration of minnows along the shore has been difficult since the season opened. Find the minnows and you will find fish.
Try areas like Monument Rock, Pelican Point, Wino Beach and Dago Bay.
Fishing with sinking lines and wooly worms and beetles has been the most productive.  If you aren’t catching fish, keep moving.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (LOWER), CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
River flows are 8,200 CFS. The fishing has been fair at times, then great! Partly sunny skies in the forecast will provide comfortable angling conditions for you!
There are some King Salmon just starting to dig redds.
The "Sac's" wild rainbow trout are eating orange Boles Bazookas, Sockeye Bazooka's, Salmon Egg Micro Spawn egg patterns.
For all the wade anglers checking in, the flows are not ideal for wade fishing right now. Get in a drift boat for the best Lower Sac experience.
Bring a couple Blue Wing Olive nymphs and dries.
Hogan's S&M, Zack's Pseudo May nymph have been good flies.
A few fish can be found eating off the surface near the edges of the river mid day. Some fellow fisherman did fantastic on Cutter's E/C Caddis.
— Courtesy of The Fly Shop

SACRAMENTO RIVER (UPPER), CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing has been good! Nice hatches of October Caddis in the early evenings, Sporatic hatches of BWO's in the late morning through afternoon! Hook ups have been happening steadily, thanks to the cloudy, wet weather!
For flies, consider Fred Gordon's Amber Wing Prince in # 16-18. Mercer's # 16 Brown Micro May is a must have at this time of year.
Burks Bottom Roller Psycho Rycho produces hook ups in fast water when fished near the bottom of the river.
Reliable October Caddis Nymph patterns are Mercer's October Pupa, Fox's October Pewpah, Zack's October Zaddis. October Caddis Dries include October Irresistible Caddis, Goddard Caddis, Morrish Adult October Caddis and (it's a secret) Turck's Tarantula!!
— Courtesy of the Fly Shop

SAN JOAQUIN, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions: Flows are low but stable.
Fishing Conditions: The road to the San Joaquin has re-opened, and should remain open until the end of the month. Nice Baetis hatch mid-day.

SHASTA LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Shasta is 40 feet from the top. Water Temp 63 degrees and the lake is turning over. All ramps are open. The surface has cooled rapidly with the cooler weather and rain.
Bait has come up and is now visible on the surface down to 20 feet.
Trout are on the bite all over the lake feeding on isolated shad schools on or near the surface. For trout troll the surface down to 20'. Work the points as the fish chase the bait.
Shad pattern spoons working best. Favorites are Hum Dinger in Nickel Silver, UV fishscale, Silver Blue, Silver Black White, gold red, gold black and Black Fishscale. Cripplure Glow Shad, Nickel Silver Prism, UV fishscale, Nickel Black prism and Nickel Fishscale.
Wiggle Hoochie White purple haze working as well.
Look for surface activity then focus on those areas.
Run surface 200' back behind the boat.
Have not received any reports on Brown. The McCloud should be the area of focus there. Look for larger fish on the move near the bottom in 20 to 40' of water. Run larger lures at quicker speeds for them. Large Hum Dinger in Nickel Silver Glow silver sand and red gold sand.
Stick baits at fast speeds as well.
Last trip this Monday resulted 15 fish largest running15 to 19 inches. Fishing near Bridge Bay. Areas to consider are Digger Bay, Toupee Island, No Name Island, Backbone, Bridge Bay, Marshmallow point on the Sac arm and Hirtz Bay on the McCloud. Good Fishing!

SMITH RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
The Smith is open to striped bass year-round, two fish per 24 hours, 24-inch minimum size.
The Smith is now closed for trout fishing.
However, fall Chinook are starting to arrive and should provide some good fishing opportunity.
Adipose fin clipped Coho can be harvested in the Smith.

STUMPY MEADOWS LAKE, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

LAKE TAHOE:
Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbons Charters (530-544-6552) (www.blueribbonfishing.com) reports:
Mackinaw trout fishing has been very good, especially early mornings. Trolling with Dodgers and minnows at the north end of the lake. The Macks are running up to the 10-pound class.
See this week’s feature by Don Quilici.

TOPAZ LAKE:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Season is closed, reopens Jan. 1, 2012.

TRINITY RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Steady releases out of Lewiston Dam are 450 CFS (Cubic Feet per Second). Water quality is great and the fishing is good! Reports say it is going to be a great season on the Trinity this fall and winter. So what's working you ask? Red Copper Johns (They always work in early Fall), TB Solitude Stones, Clown Eggs and Shrimp Pink Micro Spawns. On a sunny day, throw something small like a #16 Pheasant Tail Nymph or a Black Micro Mayfly.
— Courtesy of the Fly Shop

TRUCKEE RIVER:
The Truckee River Outfitters (775-853-7368) (info@renoflyshop.com):
Fishing on the Truckee remains good.
The weather has been almost perfect; cool nights and sunny, windless days.
While there are still some bugs hatching, Nymphing remains the best way to catch a fish currently.
The upper river from Truckee upstream is very low and fish are fairly scarce. From Truckee down to Boca the river is low but very fishable. In the Canyon from Boca to Verdi there is plenty of water and this is where you will likely encounter the best fishing. From Verdi through Reno and to the east flows are also very good for this time of year.
Try October Caddis pupa, Golden Stones, small Baetis Nymphs, San Juan Worms, Birds Nests and small Prince Nymphs.
Crayfish patterns are still working well as are streamers for the soon to be spawning brown trout.
Flows are:
Truckee  57 CFS,
Boca Bridge  498 CFS,
Farad  523 CFS,
Reno  464 CFS.

LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER:
The Truckee River Outfitters (775-853-7368) (info@renoflyshop.com):
The Kokanee spawn is about done and the brown trout should start spawning any time now. Please do not disturb the spawners when you find them on their beds.
Small flies, mostly Baetis, midges and scuds in size 18 – 22 are the most productive flies currently.
A cloudy day will produce a fairly good baetis hatch this time of year.
Fish are very wary after a long summer of getting pounded so the more stealth you use, combined with long, light leaders will improve your success.
NOTE: The CDF&G plans to electroshock the Little Truckee during the week of Oct 31 –Nov 4.

TWIN LAKES AREA, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
Upper Twin Lake – Lower Twin Lake – Robinson Creek: The Twins have been fishing well for lots of half pound to 2 pound fish both from shore and boats. We've had lots of reports from anglers getting into as many as 30 or 40 fish a day, most are smaller fish, but the action is great! Crawlers and Power Bait have been working good for bait anglers and trolling has been good with small Rapalas and Thomas Bouyants.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
The Virginias are still producing very well these days. Crawlers and Power Eggs have been doing well, also casting lures like Bouyants and Kastmasters from shore or tubes has been good. Fly anglers are using Buggers and Matukas with a PT or soft hackle dropper and having a great time.
There's also some very nice rainbows coming in from Little Virginia, some up to over 6 pounds.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF:
John and Carolyn Webb of the Virginia Lakes Resort (760-647-6484) (vir@qnet.com) reports:
Mother Nature rescinded her attempt at scaring us but it turned nice again for most of last week with a few scattered thin clouds hovering today.
Next Wednesday has a slight prediction of some rain, but that's a few days away and things always change.
A few Alpers are still getting caught but very sporadic.
DFG stocked all 3 on the 11th.
Fishing has been good and great if you know what you are doing.  Night crawlers are still their main bait of choice now, with a lot of lures and flies.
Seventeen anglers were on the water yesterday and some hit hot spots and others were smelling that animal.
Dries getting takes late after as it warms up, but I would still use black gnat parachute, grey hackle yellow, olive elk hair caddis (very naked) all in the 16 to 18 range, and a Yellow Sally nymph are doing great.
All rainbows with a couple nice browns I picked up just in front of the Lodge but nothing brutal (14 & 16 inches).
Thunder shoulders are still keeping true to form, very early am and not as late in the evening due to their spawning instincts.

WALKER LAKE, MINERAL COUNTY, NEV:

WALKER RIVERS, NEV:
The Truckee River Outfitters (775-853-7368) (info@renoflyshop.com):
East Walker River: While the flows have jumped around a little lately, the fishing remains good on the EW. Small flies to imitate the Midge and Baetis hatches will work well most days. Midges in the morning, baetis in the afternoons seems to be the best bet. Nymphing is most productive but you can catch them on the surface if you look for risers.  Large dries with a dropper underneath are a good way to prospect for trout.  Don’t forget to try a few streamers along undercuts and in the deeper runs.
The brown trout are in spawning mode and will often take a whack at a streamer when nothing else will bring a strike. Flows are 212 cfs.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
East Walker – West Walker – Sceirine Ranch - Hunewill Pond:
East Walker River: The East is flowing at about 212 CFS today.
We've been getting very good reports still this past week on a regular basis. There's been some good streamer action in the mornings and evenings and occasionally some good dry action as well.
The meat and potatoes is still Nymphing with small Midge patterns.
The pressure is starting to decline as the season wears on so there's lots of room to find some good fish.
Successful patterns lately include WD-40's, Zebra Midges, Flashback Emergers, Ice Nymphs, Princes, Copper Johns, San Juan Worms, Zuddlers, Moal Leeches, Sculpzillas, Madam X's and Chubby Chernobyl’s.
West Walker River: The West is fishing excellent, lots of anglers reporting good stringers on bait, spinners and flies. For bait you can use eggs and crawlers, spinners like Panther Martins and Roostertails have been good and for flies you can use dry/dropper rigs, Buggers and attractor Nymphs.
Sceirine Ranch: The Sceirine is still fishing excellent as well, the bookings are thinning out a bit later this week so there's room on the calendar to get on the ranch. If you are interested in some great private water where you can have a couple miles of river to yourself just give us a call!

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
East Walker River Water Conditions:  Good. Flows popped up yesterday to 190 CFS as of 10/21.
Fishing Conditions: Good. Fishing has picked back up again. Mostly small Midges and Baetis. Not much in the way of a Caddis hatch going on.
If you're fishing closer to the dam, make sure you have a crayfish pattern on as your top fly and hang on for the ride.
